This year has been very busy. Our new gym is getting a lot of use when we gather as a school community for Masses, assemblies and basketball
games. We have also hosted alumni reunions, team
meetings and dinners, teacher luncheons and
retreats in Dominican Hall. As soon as we receive
the money we will also be able to finish and furnish
the music rooms, guidance and career center, and
wrestling room. We are hoping that we will be able
complete this area soon!

Chuck Egelhoff ’61
On January 15th at the Bishop
Watterson Boys’ Basketball
game against Bishop Hartley,
Chuck Egelhoff was surprised
when family, current and former coaches, clergy, and current and former administrators
honored him for his 32 years of
service to the school.
Chuck began volunteering for
the basketball program by
running the clock and keeping
the book while a freshman at
OSU. In 1962 Chuck met his
future wife, Norma, who was
then a cheerleader at Bishop
Watterson. Four years later
they were married. Chuck and
Norma have three sons, Scott
’84 (Karen), Jeff ’88 (Ginger
Spangler ’89) and David ’97
(Kelsey Dunning ’97). Chuck
and Norma are members of
the 1998 Bishop Watterson
Alumni Hall of Fame and 1999
Homecoming Hall of Fame.
While at Bishop Watterson,
Chuck pitched a no-hitter
against St. Charles at their field
in 1961 to win the CCL. He
pitched and won all eight
league games that year and he
was a four-year letter winner.
Chuck was also on the basketball team and the undefeated
1960 football team.
Former basketball coach Mike
Winters said, “Chuck was
always so professional in his
duties and exemplified the values of volunteerism and sportsmanship. Because of the great
job he does, he is really well
known and respected in the
league.” Winters and former
coaches Frank Truitt and Kevin
Alkire were present along with
current coaches Vince
Lombardo, Tom Woodford,
Bob Dunning, Jim Ryan, Steve
Devlin, Bill Bope, Adam
Teeters and Casey Teeters.
Chuck keeping score
Despite the honor, Chuck still
has a number of years to continue his expertise. Chuck
said, “The kids are what keep
me going.”
Chuck Egelhoff and Marian Hutson
Principal Marian Hutson presented Chuck with a letter
jacket for his years of service.

The 16th Bishop Watterson High School E
We could not have been more
pleased with the wonderful
response at the 16th annual
Bishop Watterson Eagle
Auction. We want to thank all
of the guests who joined us this
year at the Holiday
Homecoming! Proceeds from the
event will enable even more
students to share in the tradition and excellence of a
Catholic education. Your presence at this year’s auction as a
guest or as a volunteer makes
you a part of the continued
tradition.
As alumnae of Bishop
Watterson, we are grateful for
the excellent educational foundation and faith formation that
has served us as adult professionals. We feel that we were
well prepared for our continued
educational pursuits, careers,
and community responsibilities.
The relationships that were
formed during our years at
Watterson and subsequent
involvement in the Bishop
Watterson community have
brought us untold blessings and
joy. Our hope is that all the
students will experience the
same enrichment in their spiritual, educational, professional,
and community lives that we
have.
We want to publicly thank
each and every volunteer, as
well as Marian Hutson, and the
dedicated staff of the
Advancement/Alumni
Department for making the
Eagle Auction possible. The
cheerful volunteerism and generous dedication of dozens of
individuals and staff are what
make this event even remotely
possible.
John Durant, John Mahaney and Nancy Durant
We have already started planning next year’s auction and
would love to have you join us.
Please contact the
Advancement/Alumni
Department if you are interested in assisting with this event,
either as a volunteer, donor
or guest.

Thanks to Our Auction Donors
The following is a list of over 260 generous donors who provided items in support of the 16th Annual Eagle Auction. Please make a
point of patronizing the fine businesses and take the time to thank them for their support of the Bishop Watterson Eagle Auction.
Many of these donors have been with us since the first auction held 15 years ago! Words cannot express our gratitude for their loyalty
to our school. Many donors are graduates, past parents and current parents and we thank them, too, for their kind support.
If you are an alumnus of Bishop Watterson and would like to make a donation to the 2011 Eagle Auction,
please call Joe Hill, Alumni Director at 614-268-3041.

We Thank Our Patrons
The following is a list of businesses and individuals who sponsored faculty and staff, or provided goods or services that were
critical to the success of the 2009 Eagle Auction.
We are especially grateful to Chris Davis and John Rogers, our
auctioneers. Chris Davis has been with us now for eight years and
does an outstanding job of making sure that we realize as much
value as we possibly can from our many live auction items. His
enthusiastic and professional manner is much appreciated. This
year John stepped in for Chris due to a family emergency, and he
did an excellent job for us. If you have the need for the services
of an auctioneer, we whole-heartedly recommend Chris. Contact
him at [email protected].

Men’s Alumni
Basketball
Tournament
The 18th Annual Ron Shay
Men’s Alumni Basketball
Tournament was held in
Bishop Watterson’s new gym
on Dec. 26 and Dec. 27, 2009.
Nearly 110 alumni returned to
their alma mater to participate
in this annual event named
in honor of Ron Shay, tournament founder and longtime
Eagle teacher, coach and
administrator.
The eighteen teams were divided into three divisions, and the
winners of each division were
as follows:
Division I
Class of 2003
Division II
Class of 1991 through 1995
combined
Division III Co-Champs
Class of 1978 and 1979
combined
Division I: Scott Mannix ’03, Tony Weber ’03, Sean McGarity ’03, Ryan
Guthrie ’03, Kirk Noga ’03, Jason Browning ’03 and Dan DeLucia ’03
The Division 3 combined
teams were declared co-champs
as their final game ended in a
tie and overtime was more than
they were willing to undertake
after a hard day of hoops.
Again this year, the oldest
alumni participant was 1960
graduate and basketball star
Orv Lyons. Orv played two
games while helping his teammates to a Division 3 co-championship. The only other alum
from the 1960’s was George
Goodburn ’69, who also played
both games.
Division II: Jim Holdren ’95, Pat McDonald ’95, Spencer Bownas ’94,
Joe Baird ’91, Chris Schultheis ’95 and Joe Ryan ’92
Many thanks go to Jeff Soiu
’68, Chris Beale ’70, and Jessica
Hill ’01, Alumni Association

their hard work in putting this
event together. We look forward to next year’s event as
well.

to see the artifacts belonging to
Bishop John Ambrose
Watterson that are displayed in
the new South Addition.
Martin, the great-nephew of
Bishop Watterson, donated the
items to the school.
While taking a tour of the
building, the Wattersons visited
several classrooms and spoke to
the students about the man for
whom the school is named. “It
is important for our students to
know their heritage and realize
that Bishop Watterson was a
real person, not just a name on
the building,” commented
Principal Marian Hutson.
The artifacts include the
Doctor of Sacred Theology
diploma the Bishop earned at
Georgetown in 1878, a biretta
he wore after being consecrated
a bishop, and a hand-carved
rosary that the family believes
is made from olive wood from
the Holy Land. The family
also donated a scrapbook that
Martin’s grandfather made
when his brother died. It contains the Bishop’s obituaries,
lists of dignitaries who attended his funeral, eulogies, and the
like. On this visit, the
Wattersons donated a horse-

hair clothing brush used by
Bishop Watterson. It has both
his initials and the year 1898
carved on the handle and case.
The artifacts are displayed in
the new lobby entrance near
Dominican Hall where they
can be seen and appreciated by
all visitors to the school.
