News & Events for June 2014
Summer Reading Program: June 9-August 2
Here are the details for all ages!
Children’s Program (Newborn - Grade 5)
Look for Early Literacy programs, as well as special events for babies, preschoolers and
school age children. Between the two library locations, we will have programs every
weekday, so there will be plenty to keep your family busy and reading through the summer.
School age children can read and win all summer long. For every 20 minutes they read,
they will place a sticker on their reading record. When they reach 10 stickers, they will
receive a prize and a ticket into the Grand Prize Drawing. Read more to win more!
Preschoolers and their parents can read and complete educational activities to receive
prizes. All the fun things to do are listed on the reading record, which they will receive when
they sign up. Fill up a sheet and turn it in to win a prize.
Teen Program (Grades 6 - 12)
We’ll spark a reaction this summer with electrifying programs, prizes and
reading challenges. To complete each reading goal, you can choose to read two
books or to read for three hours. To mix things up, there are also special
activities that will count toward your reading goals. You’ll earn prizes along the
way, as well as chances to win one of the grand prizes! If you get finished with
your reading goals early, there are some extra challenges available for
additional grand prize entries. Between the reading, the prizes and the
programs, our hypothesis is that you will have an amazing summer!
Adult Program (Ages 18 and Up)
Our version of the periodic table is your ticket to great
prizes! Beginning June 9, pick up your Literary Elements
“textbook” and get started. You will earn reading prizes as
you go, and you will have the chance to enter drawings for
two large prize packages. The more you complete, the more
prizes you can win.
Summer Reading is going on the road, too, with the chance to attend special events throughout the area. Try your
hand at painting with Wine and Canvas at the Gridiron Grill, go on a Haunted Trolley Tour of Fort Wayne, see
Footloose at the Round Barn Theatre in Nappanee, and scour Kendallville for Dr. Who clues. Those are just a few
of the possibilities this summer! All events are online at www.kendallvillelibrary.org.

Chautauqua Days Contests
Sponsored by the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site, in partnership with the Kendallville Public Library
The Kendallville Public Library has partnered with the Gene
Stratton-Porter State Historic Site for some fun Chautauqua
Days activities.
Two of the major events include a Nature Photography Contest
and Creative Writing Contest. Both of these events are open
to children and adults ages 6 and up, and both will celebrate
Gene Stratton-Porter’s life and legacy.
Entries in the photography contest will be due at the
Limberlost Public Library in Rome City no later than Friday,
July 18. Writers will have a little more time to complete their creative essays. Entries in the
Creative Writing Contest are due at LPL no later than Friday, August 1.
Complete rules for each contest, as well as entry forms, will be available soon at the Kendallville and Limberlost Public
Libraries. They will also be found online at www.kendallvillelibrary.org.
During Chautauqua Days on Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17 in Rome City, the library is supporting the
festivities by providing a storyteller, Lou Ann Homan, who will bring the story of Gene Stratton-Porter to life. See her on
Sunday, August 17 at 2:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. at the GSP State Historic Site in Rome City. At the Limberlost
Public Library, you’ll have the chance to see some of Gene’s books also brought to life on the big screen during our
movie days. Dates and times for all of these additional Chautauqua Days activities will be announced soon. Plus, look
for the library in the Chautauqua Days parade!
Chautauqua Days in Rome City is a time to celebrate Gene Stratton-Porter’s birthday and includes tasty food, birthday
cake, live music and other entertainment. Guests can watch artisans at work, get an up-close look at classic
automobiles and browse hand-crafted items from local vendors.

Grant Supports Kleiman
Creative Writing Contest
P.U.L.S.E. of Noble County awarded
the Kendallville Public Library

visit, while the remaining 50%
helped cover the cost of prizes for
students and classrooms.
Centennial Garden Now Open
Library Director Katie Mullins was the
first to take in the lovely setting of the
library’s new Centennial Garden. This
spot, which is located in the area
around the flag pole dedicated to the
memory of Chester Dekko, was added
as part of the library’s Centennial
C e l ebr at io n i n May. W eat h er
permitting, this spot is a great place to
relax, read or visit with friends. It’s also
accessible to those with disabilities.
At left, author John David
Anderson explains to students
how anything - even a slightly
used tissue - can be used to
start a story.
Above, Anderson explains the
art of writing...his way.

Book Reviews for Kleiman Creative Writing Contest Winners
1st Place: Fiction (Grade 4)
Fly Bunny, Fly
By Alayna Collins
School: Wayne Center
Fly Bunny, Fly by Alayna Collins is an
adorable story about a bunny who thinks
she can fly. She tells all of her other
friends at the pet shop that she can fly
and they don’t believe her. When she
tries to show them, she falls flat on her
head. Luckily for her, that is exactly
when a girl visits the pet store and
instantly falls in love with
her. Soon, bunny has forgotten about flying because she is so
happy to live with this little girl. Will she ever remember if and
how she flew?
1st Place: Non-Fiction (Grade 5)
Animal Information
By Aliyah Jimenez, School: St. John
Have you ever wanted to find out more
information about beavers, wolves, foxes,
raccoons, turtles, pelicans, lizards, and
many more animals? If so, Animal
Information by Aliyah Jimenez might be
the perfect book for you to check
out. Aliyah gives just the right amount of
information about a variety of animals
and her accompanying illustrations match perfectly. Some
interesting facts you may learn from this book are that harbor
seals are sometimes called sea dogs and that turtles can live
to be 100 years old.
First Place: Non-Fiction (Grade 4)
Baseball Information
By Aidan Dreibelbis, School: Albion
Who loves baseball? Hopefully, you
are not misguided like me and my
love for the New York Yankees, but if
so, that’s OK. Our first place
non-fiction winner is called Baseball
Legends by Aidan Dreibelbis and it
teaches the reader about various
baseball legends and why they are
famous. In the course of reading this book, I learned that Pete
Rose’s nickname was Charlie Hustle and that the first game
was played in 1871. Aidan’s book is filled with all sorts of
baseball trivia tidbits such as these.
1st Place: Poetry (Grade 5)
I Am From…
By Allyna Gienger
School: Avilla
Allyna Gienger’s book, I Am
From… lets the reader know
some of her favorite things and
her background. She writes:
I am from the Adidas softball bag filled with joy and dirty
softball gear, with bright green zippers and a black main color.
Allyna’s poems and illustrations were so descriptive that you
almost feel like you are right next to her on each of her
adventures.
First Place: Poetry (Grade 4)
Poems
By Alexis Jennings, School: Albion
A little trivia about our first place poetry
winner for fourth grade:
She hates pink, pizza, and cake, but
loves to dance, do gymnastics, and the
outdoors.
Here is one of her sample poems:
Love is good,
Love is great,
Love is something
We all appreciate.
If you would like to read more poems such as these, check out
Poems by Alexis Jennings.
1st Place: Fiction (Grade 5)
The Mysterious Castle
By Raegan Bender
School: St. Mary’s
Imagine taking a walk through the
forest one day and finding a huge,
beautiful castle. That is exactly what
happened in The Mysterious Castle
by Raegan Bender.
The main
character named Isabella finds an
awesome castle that has many levels
and rooms. Each room corresponds
with a different holiday or
character. At one point, an angry leprechaun kicks her for no
reason.
She encounters many other obstacles and
adventures. If you want to read more about them, check out
The Mysterious Castle by Raegan Bender.
