Welcome!
Monterey Peninsula College is proud of its Men’s Basketball Program and the success they have
achieved on and off the court.
Head Coach Blake Spiering starts his fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. The Lobos will
play an aggressive in your face defense and will push the ball up the floor on offense. You can
look forward to entertaining, fast paced basketball.
At Monterey Peninsula College we strive for our student athletes to have success on the court
and in the classroom. Many of our participants have gone on to compete in basketball and
complete their education at four-your institutions. This season will be no different.
Many people work together to make this opportunity possible. The MPC administration, faculty
and staff, including our President, Dr. Douglas Garrison, and the Board of Trustees are very
supportive of the athletic program. We rely on the athletic staff members mentioned in this
program to work together to enhance each athlete’s experience.
Monterey Peninsula College has a rich tradition of helping student athletes achieve their goals.
Thank you for your support of this effort.
GO LOBOS!

HISTORY
Monterey Peninsula College commenced its operation in September of 1947 on the campus of
Monterey High School, holding classes from 4 to 10 p.m. daily. During this first year, 87 acres
of land were purchased on Fremont Street. The following September classes opened in converted
barracks buildings with 280 students and 20 faculty members. The campus was originally
designed for approximately 1,000 students, but by 1957 the enrollment had approached this
figure and it was evident that new buildings were necessary.
The engineering building was constructed in 1958, the library in 1960, and the art and music
center and swimming pool in 1962.The junior college separated from the Monterey Union High
School District in 1961 and became a separate junior college district. With this reorganization,
the Carmel Unified School District became part of the Peninsula-wide junior college district. The
student population continued to grow as well as the need for additional classrooms.
In 1965 the building program was renewed, and the “temporary” buildings of 1948 were replaced
with new buildings for business, humanities, life science, physical education, physical science
and social science. The lecture forum, the college theater, and the college center were part of this
campus renewal. In 1973, the college began operating a satellite campus at Fort Ord in
cooperation with the U.S. Army primarily for the benefit of Armed Forces personnel and their
family members.
In 1982-83, Monterey Peninsula College was selected as the site for the Maurine Church Coburn
School of Nursing, established with a grant from the Maurine Church Coburn Charitable Trust
under the leadership of Milton C. Coburn. The school is operated through proceeds from that
grant administered by the Community Hospital Foundation, which owns and operates
Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula and the Community Hospital Recovery Center.
During August, 1988, the engineering building was remodeled with funds from the Community
Hospital Foundation to house the School of Nursing. Monterey Peninsula College is part of
California’s public community college system of 108 campuses in 72 districts across the state. It
is a comprehensive community college that responds to the educational, cultural, and recreational
needs of community members, insofar as its resources permit.
The college serves the communities of Big Sur, Carmel, Carmel Valley, Del Rey Oaks, Marina,
Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Presidio of Monterey Annex, Sand City, and Seaside.
Monterey Peninsula College classes are held on the main campus during Fall and Spring
semesters, Early Spring, and Summer sessions.

Monterey Peninsula College provides a quality learning experience for students by offering a
variety of programs and services which are dedicated to excellence and which meet community
needs. Monterey Peninsula College offers a stimulating, high quality, low-cost environment for
students desiring to transfer, prepare for emerging job opportunities, and improve their lives.
Monterey Peninsula College provides a positive atmosphere for learning and supports
opportunities for growth for all members of the community, regardless of their circumstances.
Monterey Peninsula College is a community of learners, engaging minds in the active pursuit and
sharing of knowledge by offering courses and programs:
• to encourage achievement of degrees and transfer
• to enable the acquisition of necessary basic skills
• to meet workplace needs
• to nourish the excitement of lifelong learning
• to share our resources, people and facilities, with the community.
Monterey Peninsula College endeavors to assist all who participate in its varied objectives to
realize their rights, freedoms, and responsibilities in the community and the larger society of
which they are a part.
PHILOSOPHY
Monterey Peninsula College is committed to the ideal of academic freedom derived through
careful and critical appraisal, and in turn, provides a place where students may freely formulate
their ideas and values. All members of the college community support the ideals of excellence,
human worth, and realization of human potential.
Monterey Peninsula College provides opportunities for development of skills and knowledge that
will enable students of all ages and backgrounds to become, and remain, productive in their
chosen vocations, both for the sake of the individual and society. Through research, selfappraisal, and institutional planning, Monterey Peninsula College responds to unmet needs of the
community and to changing expectations within the worlds of education and work.
As the College looks outward to the community and finds meaning and opportunity in its
diversity, so it extends its reach to the global community in which its members may discover a
new sense of place. Monterey Peninsula College opens its doors to all members of the
community -- young and older adults, those who deal with challenges to the quality of their lives
or work, the military and their dependents, the laborer, the merchant, and the artist, in order to
engage them as willing partners in helping to meet their goal of self-fulfillment.
At the same time, the college participates in partnerships with private enterprise, public agencies,
and educational institutions in order to further the academic and work-related aspirations of the
6
community. To carry out its Mission and support its Philosophy, Monterey Peninsula College
will:
1. Provide excellence in education for students planning to transfer to
a four-year college or university;
2. Provide a high standard of occupational training, enabling students to qualify
for jobs in a variety of career fields, and enabling those already employed to
develop their skills or train for another career;
3. Provide the highest quality of instruction to support students who need
to improve learning skills;
4. Provide meaningful opportunities for adults to continue their education
on a life-long basis;
5. Provide support for students through appropriate and necessary services
that help them explore and achieve educational, vocational, and personal goals;
6. Provide the community with special interest, cultural, civic, and recreational
programs designed to enhance the quality of life;

8. Provide a curriculum and an atmosphere that values diversity, a global perspective,
and the language and communication skills that make these possible. those offered
to freshman and sophomore students at the University of California, California State
University, and private colleges and universities.

THE LOBOS SUPPORT STAFF
Christine Hunsley
Division Office Manager
Jeff McCart
Trainer
Christine Hunsley is entering her 14th year as
the athletic programs division office manager.
Christine always provides invaluable support to
our basketball program. We appreciate the
time and assistance Christine has given to the
MPC basketball program over the years.
Jeff McCart is entering his 17th year of
service with MPC. In order for athletes to
compete successfully on the inter-collegiate
level, they must be physically fit and
healthy. It is Jeff’s job to help educate the
athletes and coaches, prevent injuries, and
rehabilitate injuries. There are very few
trainers that have the enthusiasm and
knowledge for their job or the compassion
for athletes like Jeff. Our basketball players
are very fortunate to have a trainer of Jeff’s
caliber.
Joseph Weaver
Announcer & Music
George Reed, the Voice of the Lobos, is also
MPC’s Media Technician. George is the
source behind all the music and sound effects
you hear at the Lobos Basketball games.
Thanks George.

MPC alumni where she played softball for
her two years here. We appreciate the time
and work that Renee has given to our
basketball program over the years.0
Although Mr. Anderson is an extremely busy
person, he is a huge supporter MPC athletics
and Men’s Basketball. Carsbia received his
AA degree and played football for the Lobos
before moving on to compete for Washington
State University.

SUMMER BASKETBALL PROGRAM
2006-2007 BOYS’ BASKETBALL CAMPS
Monterey Peninsula College Boys’ Basketball Camps is one of the premier basketball camps on
the Peninsula. Our goal is to give each camper as much time and attention on the court as they
can handle, while at the same time helping each individual develop skills and knowledge to
become a worthy team member, family member, and worthwhile citizen.
Monterey Peninsula College Boys Basketball Camps emphasize the importance of building a
solid foundation of fundamental skills from which basketball excellence can be further
developed. The outstanding Men’s Basketball staff at MPC excels in teaching campers the
fundamentals of basketball in a positive and enthusiastic environment. Each day the staff utilizes
a progression of drills, games, and fun competitions designed to provide maximum opportunity
for individual skill development and to generally increase campers’ basketball knowledge and
confidence.
The MPC Boys Basketball Camp is sponsored by the Basketball Office and directed by Blake
Spiering, head basketball coach and Carson Padon, assistant basketball coach. Camp will
provide a wholesome atmosphere in which each youngster receives expert instruction in
basketball activity as well as individual character development. Camp is carefully designed to
inspire self-confidence through achievement. Camp will motivate youngsters to improve their
talent and abilities. Areas covered include:
* Ball Handling
