SIKHS SERVING CANADA ASSOCIATION
FOREWORD
2013 was a big year for Sikhs Serving Canada and Seva
Food Bank. We welcomed our very first executive director,
added new board members, ramped up programming at
our Wolfedale site, developed a plan to expand into Malton,
started creating a plan to guide us into the future, and built
key partnerships that benefit the people we serve.
In 2013, the Seva Food Bank served 8615 individuals.
We were able to provide over 380,000 pounds of safe,
nutritious, and culturallyappropriatefood to the families
living in Mississauga’s L5B and L5C postal codes.

The lessons learned at the Wolfedale site have motivated us
to launch Seva Food Bank Malton. With this expansion, we
anticipate that we will be distributing over 1 million pounds
of food across both sites in 2014.

A dedicated volunteer, Duaine Osborne-Peters first came to Seva Food Bank as a client. She initially felt guilty about
recieving free food from a food bank, but it was her positive experience with the food bank that inspired her to
volunteer. She explains, “Initially I felt very guilty about needing the food bank, but I felt so welcome and was treated with
such respect that I wanted to give back.”
Duaine has spent countless hours volunteering since June 2011 and says the experience transformed her. She reflected,
“I was focused on myself before, but after volunteering I realized it wasn’t about me anymore. It was about helping other
people and recognizing their struggle. She and 70% of SFB’s clients are on a first-name basis, which is very rewarding for
her. “When I leave, my heart fills with happiness; I know I’ve made a difference in their lives.” She has also formed strong
relationships with the other volunteers and the board members, and says, “Everyone has been so awesome!” She loves the
support from the Sikh community, “This community is great. Last year I was so overwhelmed by the support for the radio
drive that raised $100,000 that I cried. Their willingness to help the food bank is inspiring”.
The food bank is a versatile place to volunteer – Duaine stocks shelves, packs flour, weighs food, conducts client
assessments, maintains the front desk, and has now become a member of the Operations and Fundraising Committees. “I
do it all now! I love that I get to work in different areas of the food bank and participate in the whole process.”
The food bank continues to serve the Mississauga community because of committed, enthusiastic volunteers like Duaine.
Her contributions to SFB have helped thousands put food on the table so they can take care of their families. But Duaine
provides more than food – she has provided countless clients with support in the form of a smile, remembering a name, and
welcoming them to SFB.

SEVA FELLOWS
The Seva Fellows program was designed to engage the youth of today to become
socially-conscious leaders of tomorrow.
Each Fellow proposed, fundraised, managed and executed a project of their own.
The projects were as diverse as our fellows; ranging from a client barbecue to a
dinner in the dark to raise funds for the CNIB to a financial literacy program and
a mental health awareness day. Over the course the fellowship the group of high
achievers were exposed to the diversity that we find all around us. The team had the
opportunity to take part in a team building kayaking adventure, a First Nations
Pow Wow, a Sikh Nagar Kirtan and many more cultural and religious activities and
festivals.
The Fellowship was managed by Sadia Rafiquddin. At the end of the program, Board
Member Manraj S. Pannu took each Fellow through a self-assessment of their progress over their tenure with the Seva Fellowship and they reflected on the positive
impact the program has had in their lives, the learning and how they plan to utilize
it in their future endeavours. The Fellowship as only made possible by the generous
support of the Inspirit Foundation and dedication of the Seva Fellows themselves.
Richa Machado , Jimmy Tan, Akash Sidhu, Amrit Sidhu and Jaspreet Khela are forever
a part of the Seva Food Bank Family as the first entrants of the Seva Fellowship pro-
“Having three kids in diapers is tough” states, Cleo Wong, a single mother of sixranging from 18 months to 13 years old. “Seva helps to provide my basic needs
for the month. I use them to survive” she adds.
Cleo and her family have been using Seva Food Bank for approximately three
years. “The staff are so friendly, helpful and kind, they make me and my family
feel so welcomed”. Cleo claims that Seva had made a positive impact in her life.
“Rent is expensive in Missisauga, and I’m not sure what to do monthly, but I know
with Seva Food Bank, all of my family’s food needs will be met.”, Cleo states. She
adds, “It’ expensive to be healthy and I have six kids with six different tastes, and
Seva helps. Seva provides with with fresh produce and my kids love it!”.

FOOD BANK 2.0
An empty warehouse in Malton was
transformed into a stunning banquet hall on
Saturday November 16, 2013, to host a fundraising gala for the Seva Food Bank. More
than 300 people attended Seva Spark: A Night
at the Site. The event raised approximately
$35,000 for Seva’s expansion into the Malton
community.
“Hosting our gala at the new location was a
unique way to present our vision of the Seva
Centre to the community” commented gala
chair and board member Angie Rehal. “All the
money raised goes toward the $250,000 campaign to build, staff and develop programing
for the Seva Centre in Malton”.

for the event. The evening keynote address
was jointly given by the husband-wife duo of
Dr. Prabhjot Singh and Manmeet Kaur from
New York. The evening featured performances by Dhol Circle, DOAHL Academy and Nach
Balliye. Dignitaries, included MPs Tim Uppal,
Parm Gill and Brad Butt, MPPs Amrit Mangat
and Jagmeet Singh as well as Mississauga City
Councillors Bonnie Crombie and Ron Starr.

As a mother of two girls, Shiroon knows the challenges of being a single mom. Shiroon and her family have
been using Seva Food Bank for about three years. A series of incidents in her life has resulted in needing the
food bank. “I am currently on ODSP, and I have escalating debts. With the food bank, I am able to make it
every month”, Shiroon adds.
“The food that I get from Seva makes a big difference in my life. Without the food bank, I would run out of
food each month and I would not know how to survive”, Shiroon says.
Like many individuals that use the food, Shiroon does not have any family in the area. She states “seva gives
me a chance to reconnect with friend, I get to be social- I feel less isolated”. She adds, “they also treat me with
such respect and dignity... they go out of their way to make me feel welcomed”

Anna and her family of three have been coming to the Seva Food Bank Wolfedale Site for
approximately one year. Anna was involved in a serious car accident which has left her with a
permanent disability. This disability makes it impossible for Anna to undertake the day-to-day
tasks that we all take for granted. This has forced her common-law partner to also leave the
workforce so that he can assist Anna with her day-to-day activities. “Seva Food Bank has made a lasting
impact on my family’s life. I am very happy with the quality of food and service I get when I visit the food
bank”, Anna stated. “The food that we get at Seva is excellent. We get eggs, milk, oil, fresh fruits and
vegetables- all in a place where they make us feel like we are home”.
Anna’s family have also taken advantage of several other opportunities.
“I don’t
get to do much due to a lack of money, Seva however provides us with so many
opportunities”, she adds. In 2013, Seva Food Bank partnered with Kids Up Front to provide
tickets to special events, sporting events and other family events at venues throughout the GTA.

As a resident of Mississauga for over 28 years,
Kelly has been witness to the many changes that have happened over the years. She has
seen the rising rates of rent, which makes it near
impossible for her to make ends meet.
Kelly is a single mother of three children and is
currently receiving help from Ontario Works- that
unfortunately does not cover her rent
expenses. This has created a financial hardship.
Kelley stated, “Seva goes the extra mile,” and
continues with additional praise by saying, “Seva
has helped me a lot. The food bank has taken
the worry of feeding my children away”. Kelly’s family, like most families who visit the food
bank, receive on average 35 pounds of food per
person. This is a compilation of milk, produce,
bread, eggs, and non- perishable food items.
Kelly adds, “the experience at Seva has always
been welcoming. I’m always greeted with a warm
smile by some of the most caring volunteers I’ve
ever met. They take such pride in what they do
and this can be seen by how clean the food bank
is, how caring they are, and how they make my
kids feel welcomed”.

Esther knows a few things about being busy.
Not only is she a single mothe of six children, all
under 7 year old, but she is also completing her
Accounting degree.
“Education is really
important to me, this is how I will be able to
best support my children” Esther states. “Seva
changed our lives. Before the food bank, I was
worried about where I would feed my kids from,
now I know that if I need food, they will be there”
she adds.
Esther relies on her student loans and child tax
benefits to support her six children. She often
brings her children to the food bank. “My kids
love it there, everyone is so nice, they put out
food, juice, tea, and desserts. They make us feel
so special”, she adds.
Esther is one of the many families who
benefit from our turkey voucher program that is
generously supported by Eden Food Bank. “The
turkeys have been so helpful- without it, we
could not celebrate Christmas”.
“I want to thank everyone for everything that
they have done for me and my family. You have
given me so much dignity”.
