Introducing Royal Doulton’s New
Dances of the World Series

The world famous Royal Doulton Company has outdone
itself once again in producing a series of the most
accurate, well sculpted and finely painted dancers from
around the globe.

The Chinese Fan Dance dates back over 2,000 years
ago and originates from ancient Chinese folk traditions.
The dance highlights delicate and flowing movements
with a constantly changing
rhythm. This figure
perfectly captures the
grace of the dance and the
beauty of the costume.
Russia is of course synonymous
with the ballet. The Bolshoi
company and the Ballet Russe
are two of the names most
associated with it. Of the many
stars of the Russian ballet, Anna
Pavlova was immortalized as
early as 1921 when Pavlova
HN487 entered into the HN
range. This graceful and modern
interpretation of a ballet dancer
wearing a traditional white
tutu and ballet slippers sees her in
a pose reminiscent of The Dying
Swan, which greatly influenced
Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

This new collection continues the tradition of the
original series first issued between 1977 and 1982. The
dancers from this first series represented many countries
including India, the Philipines, Mexico and Poland. Each
of the twelve figures in this original series were issued
in a limited Edition of 750 and were all modelled by the
legendary Peggy Davies. The original concept for the
series came not from Peggy, but rather from Bill Harper,
who we generally associate with character figures.
These first six figures will be followed in early 2013
with other titles to compliment the series: American
Tap Dance, Italian Dance, Mexican Hat Dance and the
Thailand Dance. We await with ready anticipation the first
glimpse of these beautiful and colorful dancers.

The world famous
French Can-Can has
a music hall pedigree
and is known for its
lifting-up of skirts,
with a multitude of
petticoats and high
kicks in time to the
music. The famous paintings of
Toulouse-Lautrec spring instantly
to mind when one thinks of the
French Can-Can. This lady evokes
the charm of the dance and could
have just appeared on stage at the
famous Moulin Rouge in Paris.

Irish Celtic dancing
was once again brought
to the attention of the
world in the 1990s
with Michael Flatley’s
Riverdance. The dance is
celebrated for its rapid
leg and foot movements
whilst the body and
arms are kept largely
stationary. The Irish
dancer portrayed here is
exquisitely precise in her
stance and poise wearing
the traditional outfit.
The Flamenco is not just a
dance but also a genre of music
and song that originates from
the Andalusia region of
Spain and its Romany
people. ‘El baile Flamenco’
(the Flamenco dance) is
known for its expressive movement
of the arms and rhythmic stamping
of the feet together with an
emotional fierceness. The
singing, guitar playing
and handclapping are
all elements of this
dramatic dance.

This figurine is a traditional take on
one of the oldest of the Highland
dances. Victorious warriors
reputedly celebrated their success in
battle by performing the Highland
Fling. In modern times the dance
is performed at competitions and
events. This figurine wears the
traditional Scottish kilt and captures
the stance of the Highland Fling.

1913, the range of Pretty Ladies has offered

introductions for 2012 have these Pretty Ladies
