Lost Balls
As I watched the Masters on that Sunday and
watched one of the today’s great young players
surprisingly chunk shot after shot into Rae’s
Creek, I started thinking about all those golf
balls that find watery graves. I imagine in my
illustrious golfing career that I’ve unwillingly
dropped a trash can full or two into the drink.
I’ve also witnessed some of my best friends do
incredible Roy McAvoy impressions by “tincupping” multiple attempts only to make another deposit into the First Aquatic
Savings and Loan. An estimated 300 million balls are lost or discarded in the United
States alone.
What happens to those golf balls in the lakes and ponds around your golf course?
I realize that most of you know that there are companies that come out and fish
balls out and refurbish them to sell back to golfers at a discounted tariff. What about
the ones that don’t make it out to live on the tee for another day? According to
research, golf balls can take from 100 to up to 1000 years to decompose. Not only do
golf balls take between a century and millennium to break down, they release toxic
zinc in the process. This heavy metal attaches itself to the ground sediment and
poisons the surrounding flora and fauna when in water. So, thank you BIGTIME
to those scuba divers who retrieve lost balls. Not only are you giving hackers the
opportunity to play with (reconditioned) Pro V’s, but you are also helping the
environment.
Another question often asked is how long can you store golf balls without them
losing their performance. Unless you store your golf balls in an environment
with an extreme temperature – a freezer, for example, or during the summer in
the trunk of your car – they will last for years. The folks at Titleist say five years
or more for golf ball storage is acceptable. Just remember if you play balls that
were manufactured years ago, you likely are missing out on some technological
improvements that golf ball manufacturers are continually producing in newer
balls.
Many know I’m a golf ball logo geek. If it has a logo
on it, it finds a place in one of my many displays.
You ask what can I do with those older balls that are
hanging around in the bottom of your golf bag or in
the garage behind the antifreeze or motor oil? Those
unwanted souls would be quite interesting as a border
decoration in the garden or perhaps drainage in large
flower pots. Hot glue several together and you have
a caterpillar lawn decoration. Around the Easter
holiday, they can be used as fake eggs. Lost or found,
you can always find a home for that golf ball.

Cacapon Resort State Park ~ Park It Right Here
Nick Ciattei
Few public courses, if any in the mid-Atlantic,
combine challenge and beauty as effortlessly
as the Robert Trent Jones Sr. design at Cacapon
Resort State Park. Located at the base of Cacapon
mountain in Berkeley Springs at an elevation of
2,300 feet, West Virginia State Parks presents one
of their signature resorts with an outstanding
golf course and accompanying 6,000-acre state
park. They also oversee and operate golf resorts
at Canaan Valley in Davis, Twin Falls in Mullens,
Pipestem in Pipestem, and Stonewall in Roanoke.
The award-winning golf course unquestionably
attracts most visitors to this outdoor playground.
Hole 1 Par 4
You find the Hall of Fame golf architect’s
trademark design featured here. Jones
incorporates his customary long runway tee boxes and ample fairway bunkering
that you find on every hole of the golf course as well as a 100-yard long double
green. Due to the high elevation you play at Cacapon, expect longer than normal
golf shots to occur especially on your drives. The par 72 taps out at just over 6800
yards from the back tees with three additional sets of tees that bring the yardage
down to 5647, which can still be a mighty test for the ladies.
The outward nine at Cacapon Resort
opens with a dogleg right par 4. Since
you play from an elevated tee shot to an
uphill approach, I recommend taking an
extra club here. While Cacapon has only
a couple of water hazards to contend
with, one stretches down the right side
of the par 4 second hole. The par 5 third,
usually a three shot hole, poses most of
your trouble down the right side. Holes
Get your birdie on six, the shortest par 4
on the front. The 430-yard par 4 seventh
doglegs left with trouble down the left
side. It takes a good poke favoring the
right to clear the corner. The par 5 ninth
requires two straight shots to set up a
short iron into the green protected by a
pond on the left.
By all means, make sure to stop by the
snack bar and meet and greet one of the
Hole 15 Par 3
area’s favorite ladies of golf, the saucy
Miss Getty, an institution at Cacapon
since she has been here forever! Be
sure to have her fix you one of the best
Reuben’s you will ever have. On one of
the most recognized holes at Cacapon,
the par 4 tenth, a rustic stone chimney
sits smack dab in the middle of the
putting green adjacent to the the tee box.
The uphill nature of this hole makes it
play much longer. Notice that the back
nine has more dramatic undulations
Hole 17 Par 3
than the front. The short par 5 eleventh,
a realistic birdie hole, plays downhill to a green protected by four sand traps. A
solid stretch of three par 4s follow in succession. Hole twelve runs uphill, thirteen
extends downhill, and fourteen lies relatively flat. This section shows just how
much diversity you find on this layout. A 70-foot drop from tee to green awaits you
on the signature par 3 fifteenth with nature providing eye candy in every direction.
A couple of fairway bunkers at the corner of the dogleg left sixteenth make this the
toughest par 4 at Cacapon. The par 3 seventeenth has an inviting opening in front
of the green and is a good scoring hole. Like a majority of the par 5s, two solid shots
on the closer sets you up with a wedge in hand and a chance to hit the dance floor
one last time.
Hole 3 Par 5

four and eight, your par 3s on the front
side, share the aforementioned huge
double green. Both play downhill to one
of the property’s lowest points, so you
may find it quite difficult to judge the
wind from the tee boxes. A stunning
view of the mountain serves as the
backdrop on the par 4 fifth (pictured on
the cover). Here again, your second shot
plays uphill to a well-bunkered green.

Cacapon Resort was listed as the #1
Municipal Golf Course in West Virginia
by Golf Digest in 2009, and USA Today
named the course as one of the 100
best designed tracts in the country. The
Cacapon Golf Academy offers threeday golf instruction hosted by Rita
Slavetskas, an LPGA Class A Teaching
Professional.
Nestled in the Eastern Panhandle,
Cacapon Resort State Park can be
easily accessed from Washington DC,
Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
Stay and play golf packages here provide
several different and unique styles of
accommodations. Cacapon’s timeless
main lodge and onsite restaurant offer
excellent service and food. It is situated
on the east side of Cacapon Mountain
overlooking the golf course. The 48-room facility presents a relaxed setting
complete with a lounge, fireplace, and cozy furniture. A downstairs recreation
room provides additional entertainment with various games. You can also choose
from a variety of cabin types from Economy (a tiny house in HGTV terms) to fully
accessible modern units called Classic. The Economy cabins have a combination
living/dining/bedroom with built-in double bunks, shower bath, and screened in
porch. They are unique and efficient and very trendy due to the coverage they are
getting on TV. The Classic cabins come with stone fireplaces, baths with showers,
kitchens with modern appliances, central heat and air conditioning, and cable
television. With so many options, one will surely fit your golf group’s needs.
Many recreational pursuits other than golf can be enjoyed
at Cacapon. Two of the more popular ones include lake
activities and hiking opportunities. Fishing at either the lake
or reservoir appeals to serious anglers as well as family and
youth. The lake is stocked in the spring for trout fishing,
but bass, catfish, and blue gill can also be caught. More than
20 miles of trails are maintained for everyone from leisure
walkers to avid hikers. If you still are looking for something
to do, visit their top notch stable operations with wellgroomed and behaved horses and exceptional staff that lead
trail rides.
Cacapon Resort State Park scores extremely well on Trip Advisor getting a solid 4 ½
out of 5. You can read comment after comment commending the overall beauty of
the region, the relaxing atmosphere, and of course, the wonderful lodging options
and terrific golf course. Cacapon definitely presents a place to park it for a while,
kick back, and enjoy.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Golf
Wes Bolyard
M, i double s, i, double s, i, double p, i. That is
how I remember we learned to spell Mississippi
in grade school. In August 2005, the Mississippi
Gulf Coast was hit with Hurricane Katrina’s
double whammy. High winds and a 28-foot
wall of water overtook the low lying coastal
counties, including the towns of Biloxi and
Gulfport, and sent the surge inland for 6-12
miles. Several casinos, which floated on barges
to comply with Mississippi’s land-based
gambling laws, were washed hundreds of yards inland by waves, and the storm
surge wiped out 90% of the buildings along the coastline. Regulations were changed
and today casinos are allowed on land rather than limited to floating casino barges.
What does all this mean? There has been a renaissance making it a great time to
visit and enjoy great golf, great casinos, great hotels, and fabulous fresh seafood! I
visited four of the top seven courses in the state and several exciting casinos, two of
which are right on the Gulf of Mexico.
After arriving at the Gulfport-Biloxi Airport, head straight in Gulfport and visit
the Island View Casino, completely rebuilt after the hurricane. It offers both a
Beach Tower and a Casino Tower with 970 rooms, a variety of dining, the Blue Shell
Spa, live entertainment, exciting gaming, fitness center, beachside pool (the only
casino with direct beach access), and, of course, golf. Beach Blvd Steamer puts out
a scrumptious supper (try the sweet Royal Red Shrimp). Check out the Candy Store
where you will find freshly made creamy pralines, rich fudge, and gourmet candy.
Island View Casino Resort purchased
Windance Country Club in 2007 and
did a complete remodel. This fun course
has modest elevation changes, tree lined
fairways that are relatively straight, lush
greens, and enough water to keep your
attention. The greens are what make this
course more challenging. Windance has
hosted both the Ben Hogan and Nike
tours in the past, so you know you will
experience a complete test of golf.
little more open. Wispy grasses, several
forced carries across the marshes, and
some lakes also help define the course.
A member of Audubon International,
the course presents golf the way nature
intended. An interesting side note: the
Palace Casino provides the only smokefree casino on the coast.
Grand Bear Golf Course is associated
with Harrah’s Gulf Coast Hotel
and Casino in Biloxi. Beautiful and
challenging, the layout traverses through
natural cypress wetlands and towering
pines, with packed pine needle rough,
championship greens, and deep bunkers
set over 650 acres of rolling land in the
piney woods of the De Soto National
Forest. The fairways are pretty forgiving
and the greens have some interesting
swales. On the back nine, the Big Biloxi
River skirts several of the holes. The 14th
green has a pond to the left where several
small alligators lie around, but don’t
worry. They lay about 15 feet below the
green.
The Beau Rivage Hotel, a AAA Four Diamond resort, towers 32 stories above
the Gulf of Mexico in Biloxi. This MGM Resorts International-owned property
offers an unrivaled casino and golf getaway experience complete with unsurpassed

The Preserve Golf Club, a public course affiliated with the Palace Casino Resort
in Biloxi, offers all-inclusive stay and play packages that benefit the player both for
the Resort and golf course. The Club encompasses 245 pristine acres, surrounded
by an additional 1800 acres of dedicated nature preserve. The native surroundings
of pitcher plant bogs, cypress swamps, long leaf pine savannah, live oak groves,
and native grass prairies have been integrated into the design of the 18-hole, par71 layout. The front nine works its way through the pines and the back nine is a

luxury in 1,740 suites and guest rooms and 11 restaurants. The 85,000 squarefoot Mediterranean-themed casino hosts 1,900 slot machines, 166 video poker
games, 80 table games, a 16-table poker room, and a newly expanded smoke free
slot room. Beau Rivage’s gaming area also now includes a luxurious high-limits
area that functions as a “casino within a casino,” thanks to high-limit tables and
slot machines, an exclusive buffet and bar lounge, dedicated cashier services,
and around-the-clock concierge service. It also houses a large variety of upscale
shopping. An expansive lobby welcomes you to the beginning of an excellent,
relaxing stay in an exceedingly beautiful and very comfortable special place!
Fallen Oak Golf Course in Saucier was
designed by legendary course Architect
Tom Fazio exclusively for guests of Beau
Rivage Resort & Casino and raises the
bar for luxury resort golf in this region.
The par-72 championship layout unfolds
in a majestic, almost cinematic invitation
to all who love the game. The 510 acres
of pure heaven with lush, rolling terrain
offering native wetlands, marshes, pecan
Fallen Oak
groves, and hardwood forests challenges
golfers to adapt to the ever-changing
landscape. Stretching to a hardy 7487 yards from the tips, Fallen Oak provides
five sets of tees and endless strategic play options as it winds through the varied
terrain of the great Magnolia State. Sprawling bunkers, plush fairways, dramatic
elevation changes, and gently rolling greens deliver an exceptional challenge that
will surely test any golfer. A sub air drainage system alternately heats and vacuums
moisture out of the greens to keep them consistent and healthy, just like at Augusta.
The course takes its name from the Live Oak tree that lives on the right of the
18th fairway. And what a finishing hole this is! The fairway slants left on this long
downhill par-4 with bunkers on the left, trees on the right, and water to the left of
the green. This excellent course has blended the natural contours of the land. It is
fun, exciting, and challenging and home to the PGA Tour Champions Mississippi
Gulf Resort Classic every March. The Pro-Am held at Fallen Oak was sponsored by
Nicholas Air and Callaway Golf, makers of some great golf equipment.
Got a hankering for some great Italian food, maybe mixed with fresh seafood? Then
visit the IP Casino in Biloxi and dine in the Costa Cucina Restaurant.
Mississippi has some great golf courses. They might be off the beaten track, but
well worth playing! Two PGA tour events are hosted by Mississippi, the Mississippi
Gulf Resort Classic and the Sanderson Farm Championship. Golfweek’s 2016 best
Mississippi courses you can play ranks Fallen Oak, The Preserve, and Grand Bear as
the top three, with Windance at number seven. Mississippi has 26 miles of beaches
along the gulf and a variety of great restaurants that offer some of the best fresh
seafood I have ever had.

#1 Municipal Golf Course in West Virginia —Golf Digest
Nestled in the northern neck of the Shenandoah Valley
against the backdrop of the striking Blue Ridge Mountains,
lies picturesque Bowling Green Country Club. For over
30 years, both the North and South courses offer golferfriendly designs with gently rolling terrain, finely manicured
conditions and smooth bent grass putting surfaces. The
North course features several lakes, towering willows,
and even an island green. The South course is a shorter
course from today’s standards and is a favorite amongst
seniors and ladies but has plenty of character golf for
players of all abilities with its rolling fairways and large,
undulating greens. Bowling Green North and South are
located between Winchester and Front Royal, off Route
522. Wingfield Golf Properties now manages the courses.
“Where the Skyline is Only a Short Drive Away”

West Virginia. Designed by famous golf course designer
Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the layout makes prime use of
the rolling hills at the base of the ridge. Rated as one of
the 130 best designed courses in the United States, this
outstanding facility features 73 well-placed sand bunkers
and three ponds. Holes 4 and 8 share a double green that

Nestled in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains and

cannot go wrong with a pleasant drive to one of the finest
mountain courses in the mid-Atlantic.
One of Virginia’s oldest, continuously operating golf
courses is still one of the best golf values in all of the
Shenandoah Valley. Front Royal Golf Club is under the
operation, direction, and management of the County of
Warren. This 1938 nine-hole layout features dual tee boxes
to create a true 18-hole feel. Front Royal is reminiscent of
the old Scottish links-style courses that require accuracy
not length. The challenge comes from the small undulating
greens and deep bunkering. Four holes border the
Shenandoah River, more than any course in Virginia, with
none more dramatic than the par 5 seventeenth hole, which
features a tee shot along the river’s edge. Front Royal Golf
Club brings back the 4-hour round of golf. It’s a fun and
excellent test of golf you’re sure to enjoy. The first Certified

now open at Front Royal Golf Club. The course is a par

Located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, Jackson’s
Chase offers panoramic views of Signal Knob and
surrounding mountains, and harbors a chapter of history’s
past. Enjoy a round of golf on the very ground where
General Stonewall Jackson gave chase during the Civil
War more than 130 years ago. Situated on 300 acres in
Front Royal, VA, and measuring over 6500 yards from the

opportunity to bust it from the tee. Still, there are other
holes that cut through existing forest where safety is the
better part of valor. It is only befitting when you play on this
historical ground, that strategy will come into play for you
just as it did for General Jackson. Located just minutes
from Interstates 66 and 81, Jackson’s Chase now has new
local ownership and is committed to bringing you one of
the best golf experiences around. The totally redesigned
clubhouse and grill are just the beginning. Come to the
Jack to meet old freinds and make new ones.

Located in historic Fredericksburg, Virginia, approximately
one hour south of Washington, DC, Lee's Hill Golf Club is
one of the pioneers of upscale golf in the region. From its
celebrated opening in 1993 to present day, the course has
always attracted excellent reviews and was immediately
listed in the top ten in Northern Virginia. The Bill Love
designed championship course winds throughout authentic
civil war battle trenches and the actual 1862 campsite of
General Robert E. Lee and his troops. In 2007, new local
owners purchased Lee's Hill, and the renovations and
rebirth is something to see. If you have not played this
beautiful layout in awhile, you need to see the revitalization
and improvements yourself. The new team is committed
to providing excellent conditions and they are always
recognized for their outstanding customer service. Located
3 miles from I-95, Exit 126, just off Route 17 South. Lee's
Hill Golf Club truly gives golfers the best of past and
present.
One of the top courses in the state of West Virginia is
Locust Hill Golf Course in Charles Town. Locust Hill
maintains championship golf conditions with outstanding
bentgrass tees and greens. Playing at just over 7000 yards
from the tips, this facility provides plenty of challenge.
Lakes, ponds, and streams bring 35 acres of water into
play on ten holes. The finishing four holes are as good as
you’ll find anywhere, wrapping up with the 455-yard, par 4
eighteenth which features a dramatic approach shot over
a large lake. Golf Digest awarded Locust Hill one of the
“Top 125 in Country for Best Value.” The course handles
corporate and charity golf outings. With the excitement of
Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, the area has
plenty to offer. Golf, Racing, and Gaming make for the
perfect sporting getaway. Locust Hill is located west of
Charles Town off Route 51, a little more than a beautiful
hour´s drive from the Baltimore and Washington beltways.

In the heart of the Shenandoah Valley sits one of America’s
most spectacular golf courses. Packsaddle Ridge Golf Club
in Keezletown, Virginia, is a stunning 18-hole championship
golf course featuring incredible views of the valley below.
Golf Digest in 2003 voted Packsaddle #5 “Best New
Affordable Course.” $40,000 worth or renovations were
completed in the fall of 2014 on the front nine. This
breathtaking facility was built on more than 500 acres of
rolling countryside. Designed by renowned golf architect
Russell Breeden along with Jeff Forbes, this 4-year project
required an incredible one million tons of rock and 750,000
tons of top soil to be moved. The result is a layout that will
challenge all types of golfers and overload your senses with
natural beauty. Packsaddle Ridge is located 15 minutes off
Exit 247, east of I-81.
The perfect combination of traditional and modern golf can
be found in Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, at Penn National
Golf Club, home of two four star, 18-hole championship
courses. The Founders Course (1968-Ed Ault Design) is
a classic northeastern-style masterpiece featuring large
contoured greens, tree-lined rye/bluegrass fairways,
sculpted bunkers, and a 7-acre lake. Iron Forge (1996-Bill
Love) is a contemporary design with bentgrass tees,
fairways, and greens and fescue bluegrass roughs. Iron
Forge has links characteristics with well-placed mounding
and tall native grasses in the outer rough areas. “Play
among the stars” at Penn National, located 18 miles west
of Gettysburg, close to I-81 and I-70. Stay & Play packages
are available at the on-site 52 room Inn.

The Club at Viniterra is Virginia’s most beautiful and
exciting new golf course. Located in New Kent between
Richmond and Williamsburg, this 18-hole championship
course designed by acclaimed architect Rees Jones is
adjacent to New Kent Winery and is the centerpiece of the
unique and upscale Viniterra residential community. Spread
out over a vast and diverse piece of land, the course
measures anywhere from 5200 to over 7700 yards, giving
it infinite flexibility. The Club at Viniterra uses multiple tee
boxes and wide fairways to assure an enjoyable experience
for all skill levels. The U.S. Open doctor has crafted a jewel,
and The Club at Viniterra is a must–play in the mid-Atlantic
region. You will be amazed by the raw beauty of this Jones
masterpiece located minutes from I-64 in New Kent, VA,
just 20 minutes from both Richmond and Williamsburg.
Designed by architect J. Michael Poellot and two-time
U.S. Open Champion Ernie Els, Whiskey Creek is as big
and bold as the land itself. Bordered by a high ridge of
hardwoods and a winding, free-flowing creek, the course
features wetlands, rock outcroppings, stone walls, streams,
and dramatic views of the Catoctin Mountains. Like most of
the tested and true championship courses, Whiskey Creek
is an honest golf course with its challenges and hazards
in plain sight. The holes at Whiskey Creek are designed to
test a player’s shotmaking ability, never more evident than
the par 5 closer, with ruins of an old farmhouse splitting the
fairway with great risk-reward opportunities. Come see the
drama that awaits just minutes off I-270, Exit 26, on Route
80 in Urbana, Maryland.

Clustered Spires Golf Club ~ Fan Favorite
Nick Ciattei
Staying at the top doesn’t always come easy. Professional athletes and teams
strive for it each season. For a golf course to stay at the pinnacle, it requires an
incredible amount of consistency, which is rather difficult to obtain when you think
about all the intricacies that go into putting out a great product year after year.
So, for a golf course to be voted head of the class 17 out of 20 years, that would be
something, wouldn’t it? Well, Clustered Spires Golf Club in Frederick Maryland
did just that being voted as “Best of Frederick” golf course by readers of Frederick
Magazine. Clustered Spires took the honor again this year with a whole lot of heavy
competition in the area.
Clustered Spires Golf Club opened in
1991 as, believe it or not, the first public
golf course in Frederick County. This
amazes me considering that courses
now number in double digits and
population growth has vaulted the
city of Frederick to become the second
largest in the Free State. Located on
what was once a dairy farm (remnants

to hole #10), Clustered Spires flows
gracefully across 185 acres nearly void of distractions. The sound of the Monocracy
River, which surrounds the layout on three sides, may be the only disturbance you
hear. Ault, Clark and Associates designed a wonderful layout. Contracted by the
city to create a first class championship golf course, the architectural team hit a
proverbial Frederick Keys home run here. Golfers have fun and enjoy this course
from the regular, senior, and forward tees but also appreciate this challenging,
competitive course that reaches over 6900 yards from the tips. While the routing
makes it easy to walk, you don’t feel like the holes are on top of each other since
maturing trees provide natural boundaries.
I felt that the course played a bit longer
than the advertised yardages because
you face many uphill approach shots.
Right out of the gate, you have one at
the first hole. Since the fairway is wider
than it looks from the tee, favor the
right side to avoid the water. The par 3
second is remembered for the red barn/
maintenance building that serves as

the backdrop. You will find most of the
trouble to the right on the par 5 third.
The modest, straight par 4 fourth plays to a deep green. Five, a gentle dogleg left par
5 and one my favorites on the front side at Clustered Spires, runs along the exterior
property line. Look for trouble down the right side, and the fairway gets narrow

with two large pines down the left side closer to the green. A large pond
sits just left of the putting surface on the par 4 sixth. Avoid the large bunker
located greenside left on the par 3 seventh. As far as difficulty, both holes
eighth and nine rank as the toughest par 4s on the outward nine. The former
has the course’s deepest green, which is also two-tiered, while the latter
remains solid from start to finish.
The back side opens with a par 5 that
normally requires three shots for most
mortals. Several distinctive par 4s
highlight this nine starting with the
eleventh. Ponds border both sides of the
fairway and a deep pot bunker sits right
in the middle of the green’s entrance. A
testy dogleg right par 4 follows. Thirteen,
the shortest par 3 on the course, plays to
Hole 14 Par 4
a hefty green surrounded by three traps.
Encounter another par 4 at fourteen
before traversing a terrific set of closing holes. Enjoy the sounds of the flowing
river adjacent to the fifteenth, the only blind tee shot on the course. Navigate your
second shot on this wonderful par 5 between the bunkers and trees for your best
approach to a kidney shaped green. Sixteen, the last of the 3 pars and also the
longest at over 200 yards, plays from an elevated tee. Two par 4s, the postcardworthy seventeenth and the daunting 470-yard finisher, wrap things up.
Clustered Spires received its name from the grouping of 5 very old and distinct
church steeples that decorate Frederick City’s skyline. The superintendent at
Clustered Spires, William Springirth, needs to be commended for rolling out
country club conditions on one of the best valued public golf courses in Maryland.
An annual tradition at the course, the Frederick City Amateur Championship, now
observes its 24th year. It will be held on August 27th and 28th. Clustered Spires
has one of the best practice facilities in the entire region. So if your game is a
little rusty, you will not find a better place to work out the kinks. They also offer a
discount range program to assist you with your practice.
As you can see, it should not come as a surprise that Clustered Spires Golf Club
continually finds its place at the summit for golfers in the Frederick area.

Packsaddle Ridge Golf Club ~ High Praise
Nick Ciattei
It didn’t take long after the Summer of 2002 opening of Packsaddle Ridge in
Keezletown, VA, for the buzz to hit the streets. An immediate award from Golf
Digest as one of the top five new courses in the country definately opened up some
eyes. Architect Russell Breeden and developer Jeff Forbes created this visually
stunning golf course across 500 acres that provides plenty of wow factor as you
journey basically to the top of a mountain. Simply put, Packsaddle endures as one
of the most beautiful courses in the mid-Atlantic.
This breathtaking mountain course
begins with a short drive off of Interstate
81. As you wind your way up the
mountain, expect to see a cow or two
and you might even run into a goat. Yes,
a local might say, you’ll find Packsaddle
Ridge “just up yonder.” You will discover
total tranquility at this facility with its
mile-long driveway bordered by white
Hole 13 Par 4
three-bar fencing. While Packsaddle
Ridge can boast having many signatureworthy holes, two on the back nine stand out head and shoulders above the rest.
The par 4 thirteenth, simply called “The View,” doesn’t host a panel full of ladies
bickering back and forth about Hollywood gossip! This hole plays just over 300
yards and runs uphill all the way. You can really absorb the natural view of the
valley below with glimpses of Harrisonburg and the campus of JMU on the horizon
from a bench sitting area behind the green. On a clear day, even the bordering state
of West Virginia comes into view. The par 3 fifteenth, appropriately named “The
Packsaddle,” also merits attention. A long cart ride escorts you to a tee box perched
on the side of a cliff. A thrilling downhill tee ball will hang in the air for what seems
like an eternity before hopefully landing on the sloping green fronted by a large
pond.
first and second holes and between holes four and five, and look for an thorough
sprucing up to the right side of the par 4 tenth to be complete by next spring.
Packsaddle Ridge has never had an “easy” tag attached to it. The course is
recognized as one of the more challenging ones in the Shenandoah Valley with
dramatic elevation changes and sweeping tree-lined topography. To get more
players to pick the proper tee boxes, Packsaddle rearranged the forward tee box
markers so that higher handicap golfers have shorter options. The red and gold tees
are now together at 4700 yards, and the white tees moved up to 5200. A green tee
has been added at 5900, and of course, more experienced players can challenge the
back two sets of tees at 6400 and 7000 yards respectively. An in-depth scorecard is
provided, so study closely before selecting your tees.
Packsaddle Ridge now offers one of the latest playing fads in the golf world. Fling
Golf, a new way to play golf, is geared toward beginners or those who want a
different way to get out on the course and have fun. You use a fling stick similar to
ones used in lacrosse. You throw and putt with ONE stick that you use everywhere
during your round. Stick rentals run just $10. The course will also be installing a set
of 15 inch cups soon for juniors to putt toward when they reach the green.
Packsaddle Ridge holds a high spot on everyone’s must-play list in the
Commonwealth. Don’t miss out on this elevating golf experience.

Renovations have taken place or are

improve the overall product. They have
completed revamping the par 4 fifth.

the trees and all of the brush on the left
side of the previous hazard have been
removed, and adding a cascading water runoff resulted in a very handsome setting.
Packsaddle has also cleared the course extensively to make it easier for golfers to
get around. All of the tree stumps, rocks, and brush have been removed between the

Congratulations go out to The Golf Guide’s Senior Staff Writer Mike Ahrnsbrak, who is
now the General Manager at Lexington Golf & CC in Lexington, VA. Mike has been a
PGA member since 1981 and will continue his duties with the magazine. Previously Mike
was Head Pro at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club in Front Royal, VA, from 1985 to 1999,
the GM at Musket Ridge Golf Club in Myersville, MD, from 2003 to 2006, and most
recently the head Professional and GM at Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club in Front Royal,
VA, from 2007 to 2016.
Brian Jones has taken over as Blue Ridge Shadows Club’s new general manager. Brian
graduated from Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC, where he studied business
administration with a concentration in golf course management. Jones now enters his 17th
year in the golf business. Brian has managed clubs in various parts of the United States
including stops in Pennsylvania and Louisiana. A majority of his career was spent at
Bowling Green Country Club in Front Royal, VA, where he managed the club from 2004
through 2013. Brian is excited to be back to the region and looks forward to bringing his
enthusiasm for golf and passion for customer service to the members and guests at Blue
Ridge Shadows.
In other news from the Shadows, superintendent Chris Dieter has left to take the
same position at Virginia Oaks Golf Club in Gainesville, VA, with former BRS Head
Professional Glenn Payne.
FlingGolf, the latest adaption on the game
of golf, is seeing substantial growth and
some Shenandoah Valley courses have
had quite a bit to do with it. Packsaddle

has added FlingGolf to its playlist, and
Massanutten Resort in McGaheysville, VA,
will feature FlingGolf during the Virginia
Commonwealth Games in late July. Created
in Boston, the sport requires only a FlingStick (made of lightweight, carbon fiber and a
cradle for the ball at the end) to play. You actually fling a regulation golf ball and use the
other end of the stick to putt on the greens. PGA Pro Brett Mowbray introduced FlingGolf
to the Woodstone Meadows course in the Spring of 2015, and it quickly became one of the
leading FlingGolf courses in the country with hundreds of players playing more than 1500
rounds. The tournament is open to any Virginia resident in multiple age groups. Visit

The World’s Largest Golf Outing has been set for
Monday, August 1, 2016. This sixth edition of the
record-breaking fundraiser is considered the biggest
one-day celebration of golf and charity. Open to
golfers of all skill levels, the simultaneous golf
outing is projected to be played at more than 175 courses across America. To further its
mission of giving back, the World’s Largest Golf Outing has partnered with Fisher House
Foundation. Offering a “home away from home,” the international organization provides
free, temporary lodging for families to be close to loved ones receiving medical care at
major military and VA medical centers. Since its inception 26 years ago, Fisher House
has saved families an estimated $320 million in out-of-pocket expenses for housing and
transportation. “Fisher House Foundation is proud to partner with the World’s Largest
Golf Outing,” says Ken Fisher, Chairman of Fisher House Foundation. “The ability to
provide sanctuary for 935 families every night in 70 homes across America would be
impossible without the generosity of this grateful nation.” Last year’s event featured
12,397 golfers, including 567 injured American service members, played at 132 courses
in 28 states and raised over $1 million. Golfers and non-golfers are encouraged to raise
additional funds with donations made at worldslargestgolfouting.com or by calling 703761-1444.

Colonial Williamsburg’s premier golf course, the Golden Horseshoe’s Gold Course,
closed on May 9 to undergo a complete renovation of all grasses and bunkers and will
remain closed until spring of 2017. “Colonial Williamsburg’s board of trustees has
approved a significant investment for the renovation of the Gold Course,” said Mitchell
B. Reiss, Colonial Williamsburg president and CEO. “It is vital that we take care of
the precious assets left in our stewardship so that we can offer our guests the premier
resort experience today’s travelers demand.” The renovation will not be a redesign,
although elevations on greens 2, 6, 12, and 18 will be altered. According to Colonial
Williamsburg, the improvements will ensure the Golden Horseshoe remains one of the
top golf resort destinations in the nation. Colonial Williamsburg has also recently entered

Pitchfix Twister 2.0 – Twist and Shout
pitchfixusa.com
I was delightfully surprised the first time I reviewed the Pitchfix Twister.
The caliber of their line of switchblade divot tools should have prepared me
for the quality of their new product. Well, the Twister just got better with
the 2.0 version with its upgraded shape and size that is noticeably sleeker
and easier to carry. The 3-pronged retractable system has not changed
and still remains one of the most efficient ways to repair bite marks on
the market. No pun intended, but I’ve been a “pitch” man for this product since I first used it. I’ve shown
head pros, superintendents, caddies, and my playing partners the benefits of the Pitchfix Twister. Each one
comes with a magnetic ball marker attached so it handles multi-tasking well. If you are having an event, it
makes an excellent goodie bag addition that you can customize. Not only will fixers find it easier to repair
any of the up to 12 ball marks on average one might have in a round, but the Pitchfix Twister does much
less damage than the traditional divot tool. So, shake it up baby now, and ditch the old tool for the Twister.
Varick Golf Balls – Sis Boom Ahh!
Varickgolfballs.com
Always remember that golf is just a game, and games are meant to be
fun. To add some spice to your golf ball arsenal, get Varick Golf Balls. At
first glance one might think that only ladies would choose this golf ball
with its somewhat sparkly design. After a nine-hole, after-work escape
using Varick Golf Balls, I can emphatically say that couldn’t be further from the truth. The ball delivered
comparable distance and even spun better than my normal ball selection. I will say that the one drawback
with these balls is that you won’t want to lose them, so you may be exchanging balls on holes where water
and possible OB may be in play, but once you see the balls, you’ll see that’s probably normal practice. You
won’t have any problem finding your ball on the course with these attractive additions to your golf bag. The
golf balls conform with USGA rules and come in both Classic and Bright assortments with three different
colors in each sleeve. With the Varick Golf Ball, expect the unexpected, not just a flash in the pan!
ICONIC Protein Drinks – Tastes are Made Not Born
drinkiconic.com
As I approach my 60th year on the big round ball, I find myself searching
for better ways to improve my health. When I drink a protein drink, I
normally hold my nose with my fingers. That stigma doesn’t exist with
ICONIC Protein Drinks, which I found to be as tasty as a milkshake. Three
flavors, Cafe au Lait, Chocolate Truffle, and my favorite Vanilla Bean, just
about run the gamut for anyone’s taste buds. Each 12 ounce serving goes
down easy and is packed with 20 grams of protein and fiber to curb hunger.
Oh, and did I mention the taste? At just 130 calories and containing only
3 grams of sugar, it rivals other protein drinks. Be Well Nutrition out of New Orleans brings us this drink
with their goal of creating a healthy product not packed with sugar, artificial ingredients, and calories.
ICONIC Protein Drinks serve as the perfect sidekick for anyone who may be looking to lose weight that
needs a healthy, nutritious, quick, and convenient meal replacement. All Wegmans located in the DMV
area stock the ICONIC line. Now, about that taste thing.
UV Skinz Sun Sleeves – The Strongest Part of Your Skin
topflite.com
Top Flite has always been a leader in the value ball market, so this
reviewer was taken aback when I put the new Gamer™ in play during a
recent round. When I do a review on a golf ball, I always play another
comparable brand to get a side-by-side evaluation. It had been awhile since
I had played a ball from Top Flite, although I was a regular supporter back
in my younger playing days. This ball features unique Dimple In Dimple™
Aerodynamics that provides a longer flight without losing spin. Man, did
this ball feel good off the club face. That soft feel was totally unexpected in a distance ball, and whether
I was hitting the big dog or my sand wedge, I felt it there! The Gamer comes in at nearly half the price
per dozen than the high end performance balls. Most of my golfing buddies play those higher tariffed golf
balls, but I’m challenging them to take the Top Flite Gamer out for a test drive. Don’t be surprised if I’m
the one taking an extra skin or two in the morning group. Game on boys!
Walter Hagen® Eleven Majors
Golf Shorts – MajorWear
dickssportinggoods.com
Want a nice feel and look in a traditional golf short? The Walter Hagen®
Eleven Majors Golf Shorts will fit the bill. The classic look immediately
caught my eye since I don’t care for pleats, especially on shorts. The soft
single pleat look on the Walter Hagen’s makes a perfect transition from
course to clubhouse. The 4-way stretch fit provided just what my soon-to-be 60-year-old waistline needs for
real comfort, and an interior gripper waistband held my golf shirt in place. I chose a sunny day to don my
shorts for the first time to see how they performed in warm weather. The fabric, called HydroDri™, kept
me cool and comfortable, always an advantage on the course. Plenty of pockets, including waterproof back
pockets, allowed me to carry golf essentials with ease. The Walter Hagen Eleven Major Golf Shorts can be
found at all Dick’s Sporting Goods. They make for a most important addition to summer golf wear.
CEP Compression Socks – Free Flow
cepsportsUSA.com
Golfers who suffer from poor circulation in their legs and feet need to
listen! CEP Sports, a German-based company that been around for the
past 10 years, provides compression technology products that can really
benefit anyone who needs to keep their blood flowing. CEP uses medical
expertise and knowledge of athletes’ needs to make one great line of golf
socks. The Dynamic+ No-Show socks worked their magic on my troubled
feet, which have always caused issues on the course. The Short and Knee-High socks provide even more
circulation and support to tendons and ligaments. The socks cut, style, and fabric offer real comfort, and
because they are also super ergonomic and never bunch, they don’t rub and you won’t get a blister. All
socks feature right and left foot for the snuggest fit possible. Get those feet and legs moving again with
CEP Compression Socks.
“18 Holes with Bing” By Nathaniel Crosby with John Strege (Dey Street)

uvskinz.com
Attending outdoor summer events presents the need to protect yourself
from the harmful rays of the sun (for more, see pages 44-45), and no one
does it quite as well as UV Skinz. Excessive exposure to the sun is the
most common cause of skin cancer, the most universal form of cancer
in the United States. Obviously, golfers become main targets since we can spend up to 5 hours exposed,
sometimes during the sun’s strongest time of the day. UV Skinz Sun Sleeves provide the ultimate in sun
protection while letting your skin breath without the greasy sunscreen mess. They also protected my arms
and hands from scratches where I occasionally hit my golf ball, which I found equally as important. Just
slip them over your arms for defense down to your fingertips. Then remove them when you don’t need
them. I found the UV Skinz Sleeves comfortable and a must-wear on those dangerous sun days. UV Skinz
are available in a variety of colors and sizes for women and men. They also have very popular child and
infant wear for those beach and pool journeys. Block the sun, not the fun!

Sun Protection ~ Hot Fun in the Summertime
Wes Bolyard
It’s time to have more fun on the links and shed those sweaters and jackets. But
remember, by getting rid of those arm coverings, exposure to the sun’s UV rays
comes along with possible skin damage. As a melanoma survivor, I can tell you
first-hand how important it is to understand how the sun can cause skin damage
and how to protect yourself from future problems. You can safeguard your arms
from the sun by using sunscreen and protective sleeves.
Ultraviolet Radiation (UVR) is divided into three types, UVA, UVB, and UVC. The
ozone layer filters out virtually all UVC, but the other two types reach earth in
significant amounts. While UVB is “stronger” than UVA in the sense that UVB has
a greater ability to cause sunburn, UVA encounters occur about 100 times more
often than UVB. So despite being weaker, UVA dangers still exist. Your sunscreen
must offer broad spectrum protection, which means that it effectively protects
against both UVA and UVB rays, solar wavelengths proven to damage skin. UVA
rays penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB and are the chief cause of wrinkles,
sagging skin, and other signs of aging. UVB rays damage the skin’s upper surface
and are the main cause of sunburn. Both types cause skin cancer.
UVR is strongest between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Clouds filter some but not
all UVR, so you can get burned on a cloudy day. For every 1,000 feet increase in
altitude, UVR increases by 4%.
in the sunscreen product to learn what it uses to protect your skin against UV
rays; the two main types are chemical and physical. Chemical ingredients such as
avobenzone and benzophenone work by absorbing UV, reducing its penetration into
the skin. Whereas physical ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide stay
on top of the skin and deflect UV rays. Many sunscreens available today combine
chemical and physical ingredients.
When applying sunscreen, be sure to include your neck
and upper chest where the open top shirt buttons leave
skin exposed. If you don’t want to apply sunscreen to
your arms, you can use an excellent alternative, Solumbra
BodyShade® Arm Protectors. This pair of simple tube-like
sleeves delivers a wallop of full-on sun protection. Made
of super soft and lightweight four-way stretch Solumbra
IV fabric with wicking technology, they shield your arms
from cuff to bicep. Silicone gripper tape at the bicep holds
the protectors in place while thumbholes help protect the
back of hands. They offer a SPF rating of 100+ and can be
purchased at sunprecautions.com.
So remember, before heading out for that round of golf, put on your sunscreen
BEFORE leaving the house, use a wide brim hat to add further protection to your
face, and wear those BodyShade sleeves. Taking these steps can assure you of many
more future golf rounds in the summertime.
For more information visit sunsafetee.org
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of how long a person can stay in the
sun before UVB rays start to burn the skin. To establish an SPF, researchers first
determine the minimal erythemal dose (MED), or how long it takes to get the skin
red. Let’s say with no sunscreen, your skin starts to redden in 20 minutes. An SPF
30 will theoretically allow you to stay in the sun 30 times longer without getting
burned. In the real world, no matter what the SPF, sunscreens start to lose potency
over time, so it’s important to reapply every two hours and after swimming or
heavy sweating. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends always using a broad
spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher – SPF 30 or higher for extended
stays outdoors.
Sunscreens have ingredients that, when applied topically, keep UVR
from reaching your skin. They work either by absorbing UVR or by
reflecting it. All sunscreens, regardless of the ingredients, MUST
be applied PRIOR to exposure to achieve maximum effectiveness.
Referring to our earlier example, if that same individual would
expose themselves to the sun for 10 minutes before applying the
sunscreen, they would have already received 50% of their MED. The
SPF 15 sunscreen would now only provide 150 minutes of protection
instead of the 300 minutes it could have. Apply sunscreen about 20
minutes before going out to give it time to “set up” on your skin
so that it can do its job. An SPF 15 stops about 95% of UVR and
an SPF 30 blocks about 97%. Look at the active ingredients label

Quicken Loans National ~ Tiger’s Town
Nick Ciattei
The year is 1996, the U.S. Open has returned to
Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD,
and “Tiger-mania” was born in the Washington,
DC, area. Spectators climbed trees to get a glimpse
of the young phenom who stood on the cusp of
taking the golf world by storm. Fast forward to
this May, and Tiger Woods returns to the area,
albeit for just a day, to promote the upcoming
Quicken Loans National. Woods has hosted
the event, now in its 10th year, that aids his
Tiger Woods Foundation and also pays tribute
to our armed forces. The famed Blue Course
at Congressional will be the site this year for
the seventh time and for three of the next five
summers.
During the pre-tournament press conference,
Woods spoke about the success of the event having
raised more than $24 million for his foundation’s
college access programs and embracing the
military, which has become a staple of the weeklong classic. Tiger started by saying “this golf
course itself has been one hell of a test for us as
players, whether it’s the U.S. Open or it’s just the
Quicken Loans event, it’s still just an amazing
test.” Having been brought up in a military family
with his dad Earl, Woods added “how important it
was to have the military involvement here. Over
30,000 tickets are given away each and every year
to people who are men, women in the service, and
all their dependents. So it means a lot to us.” When
asked to give an update on his health and whether
he could play in this event, Woods quipped “it would be nice to know that I am
going to play on such a date, but I don't know. I'm still trying to get stronger.”

Oh no Jordan!

I’m watching the Masters in the comfort of my
home, cold beverage in hand, slow-cooking some
awesome ribs while fully expecting Jordan Spieth
to run away with the tournament. But there was
this dark little corner of my brain saying “What
if”? Then, what if happened.

One Card . . . Endless Opportunities
I know I don’t need to recap, but because I’m the
writer, I get to help you relive an epic 45 minutes.
Spieth birdies the last four holes on the front nine to take a 5 shot lead over Danny
Willett. Then, the most exciting (or painful) two hours in sports begins, the back nine at
the Masters on Sunday afternoon. Spieth goes bogey, bogey but still has the lead going
into the 12th. I’m sitting there watching and saying to myself, okay, another bogey
will really make this exciting. My jaw literally hit the floor when Jordan hit it in the
water, followed by an “Oh my God” when he chunked his third shot into Rae’s creek.
In the blink of an eye, after making a quadruple bogey 7, Spieth found himself 3 shots
back with six holes to play. It would have been a Herculean effort to come back, and
he tried valiantly, but Willett played the round of his life and benefitted from Spieth’s
unfortunate 45-minute brain fart.
Funny how the brain works. I get nervous just watching athletes perform in pressure
situations. The ability to channel nervous energy into positive outcomes can often be the
difference between victory and defeat. The more you put yourself into those situations,
the more you know how your brain and body are affected by the pressure. Here’s a little
reminder of some epic golf collapses.
1999 - Jean Van de Velde makes triple bogey on the 72nd hole at the British Open
and loses in a playoff
1996 - Greg Norman in the Masters loses a 6-shot lead
1966- Arnold Palmer losing a 7 shot lead with nine holes to play in the US Open
at Olympic Club
Jordan Spieth led the Masters wire to wire for 65 holes, then disaster struck. We’ve
seen how golfers handle epic collapses and how it has affected their career. Some
(Dustin Johnson, Scott Hoch, Doug Sanders, Ed Sneed to name a few) have never been
able to reach the pinnacle and capture a major championship. For others who have
suffered similar fates (Rory McIlroy, Jason Dufner, Phil Mickelson) they found a way
to learn from their failures in major championships and go on to capture one of golf’s
ultimate championships.
As far as Jordan Spieth goes, don’t be surprised to see him in the mix at the
season’s remaining major championships. Something about him shares many of the
great qualities of golf’s most iconic figures – Tiger’s clutch putting, Jack’s course
management and control of his emotions, Arnie’s connection with the fans, and Ben
Hogan’s steely determination. If anyone has the ability to reach and exceed Nicklaus’
record of 18 major championships, for my money it’s Jordan Spieth. I can’t wait to see
what the future holds, and I’m sure the next time Spieth plays the 12th at Augusta on
Sunday afternoon, he won’t be flag-hunting! Cheers, and remember…. Play more golf!

Have you ever been on the golf course and started to
get a bit dehydrated and feel somewhat dizzy when
you survey your twenty foot par putt? Well, I have and
I can tell you that I know that I am not competing
at the highest level I normally do. So, what should
I do? The first thing I do is to get some fluids into
me and try to get to a shady area and cool my body
temperature down and try to get back to normal. Then, if I’m not better, I get the
heck off the course and go see someone with a medical background.
Now, has this happened to you despite people reminding you of the dangers of
playing in intense heat? I will bet the answer is yes and you still continued playing.
I can assure you that this situation happens all the time in this area and we all test
the hands of fate with Mother Nature and try to forge through those hot and humid
days. But, I think we can avoid many of those problems by preventing them with
the following advice:
1. Ride, do not walk, during those intense and humid days!
2. Drink plenty of NON–alcoholic beverages before and during your round of
golf.
3. Make sure you have cool (or cold!) towels with you to wrap around your
neck or head.
4. Stop at any moment you are feeling dizzy and get to a shady area with a
bit of breeze.
5. Pay attention to the weather forecast and don’t play golf that day, but go to
the club for a sandwich and enjoy the company of your friends. If you want
to gamble, play gin!
6. Finally, avoid all alcoholic beverages prior to and during your round. They
may taste great because they are cold, but they are deadly to you on hot
and humid days. Beer works much better AFTER the round.
Now, if you think I am a medical expert, you are wrong! But, I can assure you
that I have seen way too many instances of people who have not followed these few
words of advice and have suffered more than they needed. So, please take the time
to be smart and drink plenty of fluids before and during play of your round. Make
a point of taking an energy drink or bottles of water that keeps your fluid levels up
just in case the course does not have them. Also, I make a point of drinking at least
one power drink on my way to the course on hot days. Remember, you must be able
to do some physiological things in order to keep from getting dehydrated.
Finally, even if you are on par and having your best round of golf ever, make sure
you are hydrated! It is your responsibility to take care of yourself and know your
body. Nobody will know until it is too late to help you. I urge you to start thinking
about what you can do to help yourself before the heat and humidity get too severe
this Summer.
Stay in touch and I hope to see you at Musket Ridge GC this year.
