Letter of Introduction
I have yet to meet a person organizing an event - a wedding dance, corporate function, or
other special occasion - who actually wanted to choose a bad disc jockey. So why do some
people do just that? The reason so many people make the wrong decision when choosing a
disc jockey is primarily due to a lack of knowledge.
Take ten minutes to read the next few pages and I’ll show you what to look for and what
questions to ask. You’ll be better prepared to make a decision on a disc jockey that’s right
for you.
You may not choose Advanced Systems as your disc jockey service. That’s okay. Of course
I hope that you do, but not everyone reading this book will. What I do hope is that by
using this book you become better informed about choosing a disc jockey. If that is your
experience, then this book will have served its purpose.
Since 1992, Advanced Systems has grown to become one of the largest disc jockey services
in Atlantic Canada. We are also one of the most professional services available in the area.
While there are many reasons for this success and growth, I think it all comes down to one
basic philosophy: treat your customer the way you want to be treated. It’s a philosophy
shared by everyone who represents Advanced Systems. It’s also the main reason that most
of our new business comes from the references and kind words provided by current and past
customers.

Choosing a Disc Jockey
As you probably know (or will soon find out), planning a
wedding is a big job. Many hours can be spent discussing
and planning even the smallest of details. You want
everything to be perfect. And it should be.
Your wedding dance is the celebration of your special
day. Too often when making a decision about the single
longest event of a wedding day - the dance - only
passing consideration is given to the disc jockey. Take the
appropriate time to ensure your choice of a disc jockey
reflects its importance.
Here’s a step by step guide for finding disc jockeys, and
what to look for once you’ve found them.
A basic contract should cover the following areas: function date &
location; contact name at function location; bride’s & groom’s name;
addresses and phone numbers for all parties; services to be provided
(music, lighting, etc.); cost, including whether a deposit is required;
hours of service; cost for additional time and music requests. Ask to
have a sample contract sent before you make a decision.
Set-Up
Your disc jockey should arrange to set up their equipment and
do appropriate sound checks prior to your guests arriving for the
reception. This will ensure that there is a smooth transition into
the wedding dance. Ask your disc jockey when they set up their
equipment.

Step 1
Getting Started
You should begin by compiling a list of all the reputable disc jockey
services in your area. Here are a few suggestions for finding out
who’s good and who isn’t:
Yellow Pages - you’ll find some of the more credible companies
listed here.
Internet - do a search to find who in your area has a web site.
Bridal Shows - attend one or more of these shows and you’ll be sure
to find a few reputable companies. Take the opportunity to talk to
them while you’re there.
Every wedding dance deserves a disc jockey who has the experience
and professionalism to handle the multiple demands of such
an occasion. You should look for someone who is professional,
experienced and understands the importance of customer service. This
includes areas such as playing for the crowd and not from a predetermined play list, dressing for the occasion, using the microphone
only when and where appropriate, and volume control to ensure that
the music is loud enough to make dancing comfortable yet not so
loud as to discourage conversation. Ask your disc jockey service what
their policies are on each of these issues.
Music
A wedding dance brings together the greatest age range of people
you’ll likely ever have together in one room. The need for your disc
jockey to have a selection of music which will appeal to their various
musical tastes cannot be overstated. Ask to see a list of music to
make certain they have the types of music you want played at your
wedding dance.
References - talk to recently married couples to find out who they
used. Would they recommend them? The banquet managers at
hotels and convention centres are also a good source of information.
They see all the disc jockeys in the market. Ask them who they
recommend.
Step 2
What to Look for & What Questions to Ask
Now that you’ve compiled a list of the more reputable disc jockey
services in your area, you should contact each and begin the
important task of choosing the one that’s right for you. Here’s a list of
things to look for and questions to ask:
Contract
You don’t want any “surprises” on your wedding day. A written and
signed contract ensures that your disc jockey is aware of all of the
mutually agreed details of your wedding dance. Make certain you
keep a copy for your records.

Having all the music in the world doesn’t make someone a good
disc jockey. Equally important is ensuring they have the ability and
experience to know what to play and when to play it. You can only
find this out by checking their references.
Dinner Music
Many disc jockeys offer to play background music during your
reception and dinner as part of their contract, or for an additional fee.
However, this may not be your best source of music at this time. The
reason is that the ideal disc jockey’s set-up is intended to concentrate
the music in one area (the dance floor) while minimizing the sound
in the rest of the room (so you and your guests can talk). This type of
set-up does not usually work for background music since those guests
close to the speakers must bear music that is far too loud to be
considered “background” while those at the other end of the room
may not even notice that music is being played.

A better solution to your musical needs during your reception and
dinner is to hire a performer to play background music or to have
the facility play recorded background music through ceiling speakers.
This arrangement provides an even and more pleasant distribution of
music throughout the room.
Requests
Every disc jockey in the world takes requests, but many just don’t
play them! Again, you can only find out whether or not a disc jockey
plays requests by checking their references.
Equipment
Every industry has tools of its trade. In the disc jockey business
the tools are sound and lighting equipment (in addition to music
already covered above). Professional equipment designed to meet
the demands of playing night after night is expensive, but necessary.
While it may be difficult to know which equipment is suitable, you
should attempt to ensure that your disc jockey has a system that will
perform reliably.
Lighting
Most disc jockeys can provide a range of lighting options. Give
consideration to whether or not you want a lighting package in
addition to the music. There are times when lighting will enhance
a wedding dance, but other times when it is not appropriate.
This is very much a personal decision and should be made with
consideration given to the preferences of family and guests attending
your wedding dance.
Price
Let’s face it, weddings are expensive. You need to make certain you
get the best possible price for everything you buy. However, too often
professional quality is sacrificed for a low price. Price and quality
must be balanced if you hope to get someone you will be pleased
with. The old saying, “you get what you pay for” definitely applies
in the disc jockey business.
You should expect to pay between $500 and $800 for a professional
disc jockey service. Additional services, particularly lighting, will cost
an additional $100 to $300. Additional time can cost between $50
and $100 per hour.
Our best advice—don’t make your decision entirely on price.
Guarantee
What happens if, despite your best attempts, you are not pleased
with the service or music your disc jockey provides? Of course you
hope this won’t be the case, but by posing this scenario in advance
you’ll get some indication of the degree your disc jockey is oriented
to customer service and satisfaction. A professional disc jockey service
will offer to refund your money if you are not completely satisfied.
Step 3
Making the Decision
You must have confidence in your disc jockey’s ability to provide you
with the type of service you expect at your wedding. If you’re not
sure, keep looking. You don’t need to compromise; invest some time
finding a disc jockey service with which you’re comfortable.

Effect lighting system - - 4 led lighting panels to enhance
the energy of the dance floor. Industrial Multi colour led
panels that react to the beat of the music to give you a nice

light shapes which move across your dance floor and
around the room to the beat of the music,
2 led beam light effects to project multi coloured light spots
on the dance floor to the beat of the music.
All set up on 16 feet of truss to provide the ultimate in

OPTION 3 Projector and Screen with Laptop or DVD
Have your guests admire you and those close to your heart
with a digital slideshow at your dance or reception. We will
provide you with a LCD projector, screen and a laptop or
DVD player that can be used to view a power point or DVD
picture show of your family and friends.
OPTION 4
Additional Projectors and Screens
This is an add on to OPTION 3 if you would like to add
extra projectors and screens to the room so everyone can
see your video or slide show. We hook the same laptop or
dvd player up to additional projectors and screens.

OPTION 5
Flat Screen TV Monitors
If space is an issue and you still want to show photos to
your guests we can set up one or more flat screen TVs (32”
or 42”) with the same content on all screens. This works
very well to show a slide show behind the bar set up as
people are ordering drinks. This comes complete with a
sharp looking truss stand.
OPTION 6
LED Back drop
Enhance the look of your head table with your choice of 24’
white or black pleated drape 8-12’ high with six 1 meter
led bars to wash drape in any colour you want for a back
drop. This also provides an elegant background for photos.
OPTION 7
Room Uplight
The soft light of LED fixtures adds an elegant ambiance to
any room. We will provide you with and install 12 bars of
LED light to wash walls, ceilings or drape with a color of
your choice.

OPTION 8
Ceremony Sound System
We can provide the same quality sound to your ceremony
as we do for your dance. Our ceremony sound system
can be used indoors or out. This includes 12 Channel
sound board, 2 self powered speakers, 1 wireless lapel
microphone, cd player, connection for an MP3 player or
laptop computer, microphone and stand for soloist, and
direct connection for guitars, keyboards and whatever else
you may need.
OPTION 9
Video game console
Are you wondering what to do to entertain your guests while you’re taking pictures?
Maybe they would enjoy rocking out with Guitar Hero, racing downhill on a snowboard, or
just stretching it out with Wii Fit on the big screen by combining this option with either a
screen rental or a TV rental.
OPTION 10
Audience Response System
Have the guests at a reception become game show
contestants. Your guests can show how much they know
about the Bride and Groom with custom trivia challenges.
Multiple choice questions appear on the screens and in
real time the guests make their choice by keying in their
response on their remote controls. This option includes 20
response devices.
OPTION 11 - Podiums
While your venue will most likely provide a podium on your
special day, we do offer an improvement over the standard
wooden podium (which blocks the view of your beautiful
formal wear).
