A Letter from Dr. Robyn
It’s the end of another year and
a time to reflect on all that we
have accomplished. It’s a time
to remember the many stories
that have touched our hearts and
remind us of our important impact.
With so many animals and all the
work we do, it’s difficult to decide
what to highlight in our annual
report, so we chose to focus on
new initiatives. This doesn’t mean
that our on-going programs aren’t
just as important; it just means we
only have so much space to talk
about all that we do. Hopefully,
you will follow us throughout the
year to keep informed about our
life-saving work that happens each
and every day.

Every year—and 2012 was no exception—we help tens of thousands of
animals. Some pass through our clinic in a few hours, some are with us
for several weeks in training classes, and some are with us for months
while they heal and then find a home. But we never forget that each and
every animal is an individual with a name and a unique story, and I’m
proud of that.
As we welcome 2013, we take the time to plan and set goals for our future.
What does your future hold? A healthier lifestyle with your pet? Check
out “Our Plump Pets,” an article about pet obesity. Maybe your goal is
to examine your financial future. Our “Estate Planning for You and Your
Pets” article might be of interest to you. If you are considering becoming
more charitable, our “Know Your Charity” article may be helpful. I hope
you enjoy this issue. Happy 2013!

Pet Trends—Fabulous Things
for our
Furry Friends
PETtrends
The world of pet accessories stretches much farther
than we first imagined: the more we explore, the more we
seem to find! The ingenious, the ridiculous, the wacky and
the tacky: it’s never hard to spend a little money on our
furry friends. What’s practical and what’s frivolous, we’ll
leave that for you to decide. Remember, we don’t endorse
these products—we just think they are really cool.
Portable Hydration Kits for Dogs
by Modgy ($10.95)
Active dog owners, you know the drill: You set out on
a hike, only to realize your beloved canine needs water,
stat. Modgy offers a clever solution: a compact hydration
system for pups on the go. All sets are collapsible and made
from recycled plastic, creating a green, convenient way to
quench your dog’s thirst. Set includes one 20 oz. bottle
with sports cap, two 32 oz. reusable bowls, carrying clip,
and decorative gift sleeve. www.modgy.com
Bowser Beer
by Busy Dogs, Inc. ($19.99)
Dogs are known to love beer, but what you may not know
is that it is not good for your furry friend. Instead, why
not pamper your pooch with their own festive, delicious
brew? Hops and alcohol free, Bowser Beer is all 100
percent American-made ingredients, including real broth,
malt barley (good for their coats), and glucosamine
(good for joints). Low in calories and fat, it’s a party in
a bottle! For a special treat, upload your dog’s photo to
Bowser Beer’s website and create your own custom label
for a special occasion. www.bowserbeer.com
Green by Northmate ($38.99)
Does your dog gulp down his or her food too fast?
It’s a very common problem and it’s just as bad
for dogs as it is for humans. “Green” is a designed
tuft of grass that turns your dog’s meal into a
challenging game. The desired amount of dog food
is scattered and it is then up to your dog to push
the food out between the many blades of grass.
Designed to be used for all dogs, regardless of
weight and breed, “Green” is made of hard plastic
and can therefore be used inside or outside and is
dishwasher safe. www.amazon.com

Just wait until your cat gets a whiff of the organic catnip stuffed
inside the belly of these adorable mice! Handmade by a troop
of dedicated volunteers, 100 percent of Critter Project’s profits
go towards funding animal care efforts for cats and dogs in
area shelters, including The Anti-Cruelty Society. Critter Project

Mayan Laser Caturday Tote
by Hotline Design Ink ($13)
We all somehow survived the Mayanpredicted world’s end: but are you
ready for Caturday? This playful tote
celebrates the coming of days where
cats will “take over the world, whilst
shooting lasers out of their eyes.”
As if this screen-printed tote wasn’t
cool enough, the green laser eyes
are printed in neon ink that glows
under black light. If this is what the
apocalypse will look like, sign us up!

Catty Stacks ($12)
Inspired by felines’ affinity for cardboard containers,
Catty Stacks are modernly modular, industrial-strength
cubes created to feed your cat’s box addiction. Made
from recycled, corrugated ultraboard, Catty Stacks
are designed to indulge kitty in all his playing, hiding,
nesting, and sleeping needs and are constructed so each
secures to another: they’re stable but lightweight, making
them easy to rearrange. www.cattystacks.com

OUR
PLUMP
PETS
animal obesity and
how you can help get
your PET back on track
The epidemic of obesity that is afflicting
so many people is also affecting our
cats and dogs. According to a 2011 study
conducted by the Association for Pet
Obesity Prevention, more than 50 percent
of pets are considered overweight or
obese (see page 7). Just as with people,
overweight animals are at increased risk
of diabetes, liver disease, and joint pain.
A common New Year’s resolution is to
lose weight, and if your pet is a little—or a
lot—plump, you may want to include him
or her in your weight loss goals.
The first step is to consult your veterinarian to make sure your pet’s
increasing waistline isn’t due to a
medical problem. Some cats and dogs
have conditions such as hypothyroidism
or Cushing’s disease that can cause
Page 6
The Anti-Cruelty Society
weight gain. Your veterinarian can also
help you develop a plan and advise you
on the proper caloric intake for your
pet. If your pet has received a clean bill
of health, the excessive weight is caused
by only one thing: consuming too many
calories.
Owners are often in denial and have
difficulty admitting that their pet may
need to shed a few pounds. Veterinarians
hear many excuses such as:
“But doctor, she hardly eats a thing.” This
pet probably has food available all day
and nibbles a little at a time so the owner
is unaware of the pet’s total intake.
“But doctor, she looks at me with those
big brown eyes: how can I resist?”
The beggar has trained this owner so
well. Want a treat? All she has to do is
look at her owner with love and a great
big snack comes her way!
“He’s such a good dog, I don’t want
him to be hungry.” This owner’s sign
of affection for his or her pet is focused
on feeding.
“But doctor, she just won’t eat regular cat
food.” This owner has been trained to
feed her cat salmon, tuna, sushi, crab,
and lobster. Cats and some dogs can
be finicky eaters but there are better
solutions. As with any diet change,
introduce commercial pet food slowly
and train your pet to eat what they
should be eating: a balanced and
complete diet.
Our Plump Pets
Perhaps you see yourself in some of
these excuses…perhaps you feel guilty
or ashamed? Recognizing the problem
and striving to make a change is the first
step to improving your pet’s health.
Simply reducing your healthy pet’s food
intake by 1/3 (remember to include
all treats) may be all you need to do…
but better yet: interact more with your
pet. Use training and play to help with
weight loss. Fun, physical activities
may also improve your bond with your
cat or dog and be more rewarding for
both you and your pet! Be creative with
rewards—try lower calorie treats such
as carrots or celery rather than dense
store-bought snacks, and reduce the
number of treats given. After a behavior
is trained, intermittent reinforcement
is a better incentive than continuous
reinforcement.
Most cats love the chase, so use this
to your advantage! Play with your
cat by having him or her chase a
laser around the house. This fun
activity promotes exercise and can
be wildly entertaining for both of you!
Use toys such as a cat charmer (or
make your own using the tutorials
on our website: www.anticruelty.org/
doityourselfdonations) to stimulate your
cat’s natural hunting instincts. Using
treats or toys to encourage your cat to go
up and down stairs or climb her perches
exercises different muscles. For the
more adventurous owners, leash train
your cat and take him (or her) on walks
with you…sure to create a buzz in your
neighborhood!
Dogs are a bit easier to exercise, and one
of the easiest ways to do so is by walking.
As with any exercise program, start
slowly, add an extra block or two to your
daily walk and gradually increase the
time. Make sure that your dog is walking
briskly, not just sniffing and meandering,
which can be mentally stimulating for
your dog but doesn’t burn many calories.
If you are jogging with your dog, make
sure he is physically able to keep up with
you: a little Dachshund may not be able
to jog five miles with you. Make sure not
to jog outside when the weather is too
hot, as it is easy for a dog to become
overheated during summer months.
Many dogs love to play fetch and will do
this for hours. Some dogs love the water
and will swim with or without fetching.
Try different things, and discover what
your dog enjoys. For an older dog, you
may need to add some incentives such
as playing “A to B”, a game that is easiest
with two people. You need a location that
your dog can be safely off leash (or use
a very long lead). One person (A) stays
with the dog, the other person (B) moves
a distance away and calls the dog. If your
dog isn’t trained to “come”, the second
person should turn their back to the dog
and start moving away while calling the
dog. When the dog comes to the second
person, give a low-calorie but very tasty
treat (such as a carrot or miniscule piece
of cheese). Then repeat with person
A calling the dog. You can also excercise
in a similar fashion with your feline
friends by playing chase in the house
with your kitty.
We hope these tips will help you and your
pet feel a little more inspired to shape up
in 2013. There are many opportunities to
exercise and bond. Try an agility class or
one of the other organized dog sports—
or make up your own games and watch
the pounds melt away on both you and
your best friend. Like most transitions,
this process won’t happen overnight, so
set realistic goals for your pet’s health
and be patient.
A PET’s IDEAL
body condition
Ideal Weight
Here are three simple steps to determine
if your pet is in ideal body condition:
• Rib check: Place both of your thumbs
on your pet’s backbone and spread your
hands across his/her rib cage. You should
be able to feel but not see the ribs. This
is especially important on pets with long
or thick hair coats as a visual check is
difficult.
• Profile check: Examine your pet’s
profile. The abdomen should be tucked up
behind the rib cage.
• Overhead check: Look at your pet from
above. Your pet should have a defined
waist (an hourglass figure).
If you can’t feel your pet’s ribs, its waistline
is lost, or the belly is sagging, a reduction
in food and/or an increase in activity is in
order.

Dear Tanya,
Dr. Simuel Hampton,
A Staff Veterinarian
Obesity is a common problem
in our pets that is usually
related to how we manage
our pets’ diets. The problem
can be exacerbated when
it comes to training, as
treats are our most common
training tool.
One way to cut down on treat

The Anti-Cruelty Society
One of the best ways to
improve the health of your
cat and the bond between
you, is to play games together.
Many people are under the
impression that cats are
lazy and don’t require any
exercise. Well, truth is, we
like to play just as much as
pooches! Here are some
ideas to help stimulate Larry
and get him to participate
ways to motivate your pet. For
many animals, food isn’t the
only thing they get excited
about. Does your pet have a
favorite toy she likes to play
with or does she love getting
her belly rubbed? These types
of rewards can be used to
encourage desired behaviors
while not contributing to your
pet’s obesity.
If your pet just has to have her
snacks, one simple option
is to use smaller pieces of
treats. Many dog snacks and
treats can be easily broken
into smaller pieces. By turning
one treat into five or six we
accomplish many things.
The pet stays interested in
the training because they
in exercise—helping him live
a long and healthy life.
Laser Chasing: Move a laser
pointer across your floor, up
the wall, all around the house.
Larry will chase the laser light
and get some running into his
routine!
Paw Hockey: Break off a piece
of foil, scrunch it into a puck
shape, and then flick it with
your fingers so that it goes
skittering across the floor.
Larry will chase after the
puck, batting it with his paws
and making it scoot from one
end of the room to the other.
Bathtub Scurry: Put a ping
pong ball in a clean, dry
bathtub. Put Larry in the tub
and bounce the ball off the
sides of the tub. Then sit back
and watch Larry chase it.
haven’t been satisfied, we
reduce the amount of treats
that the animal gets, and we
save money on doggy snacks.
You can always try low-fat
animal treats. Most dogs love
carrots or frozen, cooked
vegetables, and in small
quantities these are fine for
your pet.
These are just a few of the
many avenues to explore
when training your pet while
not contributing to obesity.
Be creative, and you will
surely find one that works for
you without compromising
her waistline.
Be sure to plug the drain and
remove anything you do not
want knocked over.
Chase the Thing on the
String: Get a plastic ball,
a catnip mouse, or a piece
of felt and tie it to a long piece
of twine or heavy string. Pull
the string along a hallway,
through a cat perch, or up
and down a staircase and let
Larry chase the object. Be
sure to give him the chance to
actually capture the object so
that he feels like a successful
predator. String toys should
only be used under supervison
to prevent entanglement or
ingestion.
Hope these tips help and
are enjoyable for both you
and Larry!

2012 at the Society
A Year
of
Accomplishments
The New Year is a time to reflect on and celebrate all that we do
every day as we strengthen our commitment of caring. Because
we help so many animals and have such comprehensive and
diverse programs, it’s difficult to decide what to highlight in our
annual report. We are proud of all that we have accomplished
in 2012 and look forward to 2013. We couldn’t do it without our
caring and generous supporters: Thank you!
Animal Care
The Anti-Cruelty Society’s top priority is always to provide
the best possible care for the cats and dogs in our charge.
To further this commitment, our staff has fully embraced the
Association of Shelter Veterinarian’s Guidelines for Standards
of Care in Animal Shelters which is based on the following
Five Freedoms:
• Freedom from Hunger and Thirst – by ready access to fresh
water and diet to maintain health and vigor.
• Freedom from Discomfort – by providing an appropriate
environment including shelter and a comfortable resting
area.
• Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease – by prevention or
rapid diagnosis and treatment.
• Freedom to Express Normal Behavior – by providing
sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the
animal’s own kind.
• Freedom from Fear and Distress – by ensuring conditions
and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
The Anti-Cruelty Society 2012 Annual Report
Page 11
A student presents her paintings during the Society’s after school program
Of the above provisions, fresh water and a healthy diet are
the easiest for us to meet. We are thankful for our ability to
provide medical care for each animal through our talented
team of professional veterinarians and clinic staff. But keeping
the animals well fed and free from pain, injury and disease is
only the beginning. We rose to the challenge of meeting the
remaining criteria, knowing how difficult it would be in a
shelter environment.
Staff from throughout the organization developed a plan, and
with the help of our volunteers and wish list donors, we have
implemented programs that meet, and in many cases exceed,
the above standards. We are now on the road to providing
each animal with care that goes beyond physical necessity to
address mental, emotional, and behavioral needs. And with the
continued help of our supporters—we can do just that! Whether
by donating funds or supplies, animal lovers from all walks of
life can play a part in helping us help these pets.
Clinic
To continue to provide quality medical services for the animals,
construction of our new, enlarged veterinary clinic has begun!
This facility will have a larger surgical suite, enlarged prep
and recovery room, separate cat and dog housing rooms,
and a proper rehabilitation suite for animals with contagious
diseases. This complex project took more than a year of
intensive planning but will only take five months to construct.
We will be moving into the new space this spring.
Humane Education
Education is an integral part of our mission. Our Humane
Education Department offers a vast array of programs that
bring the message of compassion, respect, community, and
proper animal care to people of all ages.
2012 was a busy year for the humane educators. The team
offered programming on “Safety Around Animals” in July at
the Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier, created a new
presentation highlighting our Humane Investigators, “Paw
& Order: Furry Victims Unit” and hosted our own “Humane
Heroes” summer camp on-site with the support of Humane
Education Advocates Reaching Teachers (HEART) and the
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(ASPCA). The team continues to provide excellent programming
and presentations at schools, camps, juvenile detention centers,
museums and special events and leads on-site workshops
such as our Pet Loss & Grief Support Group and the monthly
Pet First Aid & CPR classes.
The Anti-Cruelty Society 2012 Annual Report
Page 12
One of the most frequent requests received by our Humane
Education Department is for service learning credit opportunities
for teens. We continue to offer the ever-popular after school
program which recently added a student “Showcase” to highlight
the teens’ efforts to the community. But the after school program
isn’t a fit for all, so our humane educators developed new
opportunities that students could undertake on their own time.
From hosting bake sales and donation drives, to crafting pet toys
and giving in-class presentations, teens can now coordinate their
own outreach projects on our behalf. This revamp has allowed
us to partner with a greater number of teens while helping them
fulfill their service learning credits.
Staff
We couldn’t save thousands of animals each year without
the passion and dedication of our staff! To show our ongoing
commitment to be an equitable and progressive workplace, we’ve
developed new programs to help our team members in their
professional development in the animal welfare industry.
Our re-structured employee orientation now consists of nine
online training modules and an in-person customer service
training. In addition, we have created several other online training
modules for staff in a range of topics from breed identification to
proper animal restraint. We have also equipped our management
team with added training tools on subjects such as coaching, time
management, writing performance appraisals, and stress relief.
Utilizing everything from interactive online training and testing to
in-person workshops and fun peer-created videos, our Training
Associate has engaged staff in new and exciting ways – leading
to skill development and a boost in morale. With the launch
of new initiatives like our “Lunch and Learn” program, we are
continuing to provide formal and informal opportunities for staff
and volunteers to grow professionally both here and beyond.
Volunteers
Volunteers continue to be a key component in the Society’s
success. This valuable team does it all; washes dogs, assists
visitors, encourages shy cats to eat, walks dogs, sews beds, helps
in our clinic, makes pet toys, cheers marathon runners, works
special events, and photographs animals.
Our Animal Behavior & Training team is always looking for
ways to improve the experience of each animal in our care. In
2012 they launched a variety of new initiatives many of which
were undertaken by volunteers. Our Cat Care II and Dog Care
II participants were the go-to helpers in many of these projects.
From documenting the behaviors of stressed cats to teaching
dogs basic cues, this set of experienced volunteers stepped up
to the plate to take on these challenging new initiatives and the
results are visible throughout the shelter.
Continued on page 14…
Tiffany & Bison
Two of Thousands Helped
We touch the lives of thousands of animals every year
and never forget that each is an individual with a unique
story. The challenge is deciding which of their stories to
share. Our staff chose the following two animals who
really touched their hearts in 2012.
Tiffany is a 7-year-old
cat that came to us
with a heart-breaking
story. Tiffany’s original
owner met a man,
fell in love, and got
married. Sadly, her
owner passed away
in 2012. As much as
the husband loved
Tiffany, living with
her brought up too many feelings of sorrow, so he
brought her to us. It took her more than 4 months to find
her new forever home, but it was well worth the wait.
Tiffany was adopted by a loving woman whose husband
had just been deployed. Now they are providing love
and comfort to each other!
Bison, a handsome
2-year-old Labrador
mix, was confiscated
from a home in
Mississippi as part
of a hoarding case.
Because of his past,
Bison was extremely
shy and fearful of new
things, people, and
places. Our behavior
team developed a plan to socialize Bison, and with the
help and patience of many employees and volunteers,
Bison overcame his past and was ready for adoption
in less than 2 months. Now he is “living the life” in the
suburbs. His new owner wrote to us about his progress:
“I’m not entirely sure what had happened to him or
what his life had been like before you guys rescued
him, but I can certainly tell he went through a lot. But
his unconditional love really touches my heart and just
amazes me how deep and pure the love of the animals
can be.” A few months later, she wrote “His progress
has been nothing but amazing, and I’m so happy how
wonderful he is doing so far…thank you again for
introducing me to such a wonderful and special boy.”

The list of volunteers’ varying involvements is almost endless
and continues to expand. With many special projects and
established programs already underway, the Volunteer
Department kept things buzzing in 2012 with the launch of four
new ventures:
• Cat Care I: In this hands-on entry-level program, volunteers work
with cats to enrich their stay while helping to highlight each
cat’s most endearing features. The team utilizes techniques
and methods developed by our behavior specialists to draw
out the cats’ unique personalities, making them more visible
to adopters and speeding up their placement in new homes.
• Enrichment Construction Crew: This group of crafty volunteers
comes together each week to assemble toys and treats for
shelter pets. Using materials such as fabric scraps, toilet paper
rolls and water bottles, the volunteers make tools that other
volunteers and staff can use to enrich the stay of cats and dogs.
This project has also welcomed several corporate groups this
year, including Google, The Department of Labor and students
from Muchin College Prep.
• Veteran Shelter Dog Classes: With the help of our Animal
Behavior & Training team, veterans from the Jesse Brown
VA Medical Center have been coming in twice a month to
help us teach shelter dogs everyday life skills. These military
veterans have the opportunity to help canines learn basic
etiquette, which in turn helps them find their forever homes.
By participating, our veterans are also finding comfort and
purpose by making a positive impact on these animals’ lives.
• Adoption Follow-Up Calls: This fall, our Volunteer Guide
team undertook a new responsibility: adoption follow-up
calls. Every Society adopter receives an electronic survey
which gives our organization vital feedback and observations
regarding the adoption process. We decided to take this
one step further by directly connecting with adopters who
brought home pets who were in our “Advanced” or “Special”
adoption categories, utilized the Pets for the Elderly program,
or adopted cats through our PetSmart partners. By checking
in with these groups within 30 days of adoption, we’re able
to provide support and assistance when needed and gather
valuable information about the animals’ adoption transitions.
Collaboration
It’s not only our staff and volunteers who help us with building
a community of caring. Our many partners who share a similar
mission help us in various ways. We continue our extremely
successful transfer program – taking animals from areas where
affordable spay/neuters or adopters are not available so we can
find them a forever home and transporting animals to other
shelters or rescue groups to be adopted. In 2012, we also forged
several new partnerships. Three of these focus on increasing
adoptions: Lambs Farm, PetSmart Charities, and Pilots N Paws®.
These new venues will help more animals find the loving
homes they deserve.
We forged a unique partnership this year with Chicago Children’s
Museum working on an upcoming temporary exhibit, “Ready,
Pet, Go!” to open in May. Pets have an incredible ability to evoke
emotions and spark empathy, imaginative play, and storytelling.
This exhibit will invite visitors to engage in playful learning
around the theme of pets, provide opportunities for children
to explore their connection to pets, and empower caregivers
to reflect on how their own attitudes and experiences affect
their children’s relationships with pets. We are very excited
for this opportunity to showcase pets and reach so many
young children.
Spreading the Word
When people think of The Anti-Cruelty Society, many conjure
up images of cats and dogs, call to mind our affordable spay/
neuter clinic, or visualize the iconic architecture of our Adoption
Center. Our reach and legacy go far beyond these well-known
services – and we wanted to remind the community of just that.
To get the word out about the full vision of our mission, in 2012
we introduced our “Meet Us Again” campaign. Highlighting
various departments, we utilized everything from traditional
advertising and direct mail to materials like our calendar and
magazine to showcase the full impact of our work.
Our spring CTA advertising campaign featured Society alumni
throughout the Blue, Red, Brown, and Orange Lines. Focusing
on our efforts with the School of Dog Training and Humane
Investigation, this campaign allowed us to reconnect with
supporters and reach a new audience. This fall we rolled out
our new mobile text giving tools, revolutionizing our ability
to receive donations. Our fall CTA ads utilize this technology
and encourage riders to text a donation.
We also produced a public service announcement (PSA) to
more widely project our message. Aired by more than a dozen
radio and television stations, our PSA reintroduced the public
to our many successes, past and present, while giving a glimpse
into our various programs and services. We also produced our
first 30 second television commercial, which debuted locally
on cable stations in November and helped us raise more funds
and awareness for our life-saving work.
As you can see, we’ve had a busy year—and of course, we could
not have done any of this without you, our supporters. Thank
you for continuing to support all that we do and for being a part
of our community of caring. Here’s to an even better and more
successful 2013!

Asilomar Numbers
Through the generous support of our donors, The Anti-Cruelty Society
ended the 2012 Fiscal Year in a balanced position. As shown, 71 percent of
our resources come from donations. In keeping with the expectations of
our donors, 77 percent of our resources are allocated to our comprehensive
programs. Our many accomplishments would not be possible without the
generous and continuing donations of those who are faithful to our mission
of building a community of caring by helping pets and educating people.
We are proud of what we do and work
to be as transparent as possible. Several
years ago, The Anti-Cruelty Society
signed the Asilomar Accords, guidelines
that facilitate the data collection
process and assure consistent reporting
across agencies. We have included
an abbreviated table of our 2012
statistics below. More information on
the background, definitions, guiding
principles, and our numbers in
detail can be found on our website,
www.anticruelty.org/operationsstatistics.
The collection and publication of this
data is sponsored by Maddie’s Fund®,

the animals, we have included donors that have given a total of $250 or more during our fiscal year. We are fortunate to have throusands of donors
that could not be listed here, but those gifts are sincerely appreciated and needed.

Estate Planning
—Estate Planning for You & Your Pets—
Plan to continue your commitment to caring
The New Year might be a good time to start thinking about
continuing your commitment to caring for animals after
your lifetime. When you leave a legacy for the animals by
including The Anti-Cruelty Society in your plans, you will help
tomorrow’s animals in need and can make plans for your own
beloved pets. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are,
making plans now is a responsible thing to do. Making plans
now will provide you with the comfort of knowing your pets
will be cared for and your assets will be handled according
to your wishes.

Page 21
Estate Planning
for
You
and
Your Pets
A will is a binding legal document that should be drafted
by an attorney. Your attorney will listen to your wishes and
will create a document that, if necessary, stands up to a court
challenge.
The ideal placement for your pets after your death is with
a family member, a close friend, a co-worker, neighbor, or
someone who knows and cares about your animals. Make
certain that the prospective caregiver understands the
responsibilities of caring for your pets. She or he should be
physically fit enough to provide care and should have a home
and lifestyle that is compatible with animals. The caregiver
should realize that animals take time, energy, and patience;
that accidents will occur; that regular veterinary appointments
are necessary; and that emergencies may arise.
When the caregiver is chosen and accepts the responsibility,
you can then work with your attorney to incorporate a sum
within your estate plans to reimburse the caregiver for
expenses related to your pets’ care. Legally, you cannot leave
money directly to an animal. You can, however, leave money
to an individual who has agreed to care for your pet. One way
of stating this could be: “I leave my cats to my friend, John
Doe, along with the sum of $___________, which sum I ask
that John Doe expend for the care and feeding of my cats for
their rest of their lives.”
If you do not have a caregiver to care for your pets, you may
want to consider placing your animals with The Anti-Cruelty
Society or another shelter. Animal shelters adopt thousands
of animals each year into loving homes, but may not be able
to place every animal, depending on the health and behavior
of the animal. Some pet owners feel that their animals would
not do well in another home. These people include a clause
in their will specifying that their animals be euthanized upon
their owner’s death.
Once you have made arrangements for your pets’ care and any
temporary or designated caregivers have agreed to your plans,
you will need to include the instructions in your will or trust.
You may also need a separate codicil or amendment which
will be acted upon immediately after your death. Consult your
attorney to see if this form needs to be drawn up as well. Your
executor (or trustee of your trust) will have initial responsibility
for your pets, and you should provide adequate direction
to that person in your will, trust, or codicil. Your statement
of intent should probably begin: “I intend that my executor
(or trustee) do the following with my pets upon my death…”
Page 22
The Anti-Cruelty Society
The executor of your estate and any caregivers should be
advised of your plans. Give the executor a copy of the will,
trust, or codicil and your pets’ records. Information on the
pets’ behavior and medical history will help the caregiver
better understand and care for your animals. Your family and
friends should also know about the arrangements to ensure
that your animals receive immediate care upon your death.
If you would like assistance from The Anti-Cruelty Society,
please let us know in advance. We will need a copy of your
pets’ records as well as a copy of your will, trust, or codicil.
Your executor should be instructed to notify the Society to
arrange a time to surrender your pets.
If you have an existing will, a codicil or amendment providing
financial support to The Anti-Cruelty Society can be added
without rewriting your entire will. Following is an example of
language that your attorney may incorporate into your will,
trust, or codicil:
“I give, bequeath, and devise, to The Anti-Cruelty Society,
also known as the SPCA of Illinois, an Illinois 501(c)(3) notfor-profit corporation, located at 157 West Grand Avenue,
Chicago, Illinois, Federal Identification No. 36-2179814, the
sum of __________ dollars and the receipt of the President
or Vice President of said organization shall be sufficient
discharge to my executor(s) of the same.”
There are different types of gifts that you can make:
• A specific bequest designates a specific amount of your
estate to The Anti-Cruelty Society and the Board of Directors
makes the decision as to the best use of the funds.
• A Residuary Bequest provides all or a percentage of your
assets after debts, taxes, expenses, and all other bequests
have been paid.
• A Restricted Bequest allows you to make a bequest for
a specific purpose. For example, you may want your
contribution to support shelter renovation or our spay/
neuter program. Animal welfare needs change over time, so
a restricted bequest should be made in the broadest terms
possible. Ideally, the bequest should be discussed with
The Anti-Cruelty Society’s President or Vice President of
Development to ensure that the Society is able to fulfill the
terms of the bequest.

Legally, you cannot leave money
directly to an animal. You can, however,
leave money to an individual who has
agreed to care for your pet.
In addition to a bequest in your will, you can support The
Anti-Cruelty Society through a number of planned giving
vehicles such as a gift annuity, life insurance policies, a gift
of real estate, an endowment fund, or a charitable remainder
trust. Bequests and many other planned gifts may provide
life income or estate tax relief while supporting the Society.
Planned gifts must be written to the specifications set by the
Internal Revenue Service.
Your estate or other planned gift entitles you to membership in
the Rose Fay Thomas Society, which recognizes planned gift
donors. Members are listed on a permanent plaque located in
The Anti-Cruelty Society’s Adoption Center.
For more information on the Rose Fay Thomas Society,
please contact Nadine Walmsley, Vice President of
Development and Public Relations at (312) 645-8001
or [email protected].
Please seek the counsel of a trained estate planner or
attorney for any drafting or revisions to a will, trust, or other
planned gift.

Nadine Walmsley
The media is full of stories about the best
and worst charities. Now, more than ever
before, you need to arm yourself with
the truth. We all know that every dollar
donated to a charity can truly impact the
recipients that receive services through
that charity. For us, it’s the animals!
A woman recently called wanting
to speak with someone who cares
deeply about the animals. During our
conversation, she explained that she
is elderly and wanted to make sure the
right charity received her gift so that the
poor little animals will be helped. She
explained that when she was young she
brought lost and injured cats and dogs to
us and we had always been there to help
those animals. She had not been in our
facility for many years, so she came for
a visit to see for herself the impact that
her gift would make. When she walked
in, she said “There are so many of them.
They all look well taken care of, but I
worry that they won’t have someone to

love them”. After visiting with the cats in
both the cage free rooms (Charlotte’s Cat
Corner) and in the kennels, she asked
why they were not all in open rooms.
I explained that some kitties find it very
stressful to be around other cats and
prefer a nice, small, safe space, which is
what we provide for them until we find
their forever homes. With no time limits,
it could be a while, but we will find
them a loving home. This was how she
wanted her gift to be used, and for her,
The Anti-Cruelty Society was the best
place to help more animals.
As we begin our 114th year of helping
pets and educating people, we continue
to ensure happy endings for the 400 cats
and 100 dogs we have in our facility on
any given day. We also continue our
open-admission commitment of being
here for any animal in need, 365 days
a year. We may be best known for
adoptions, but we do so much more for
the animals and the community.
Our spay/neuter clinic is the oldest in
Chicago. Since opening in 1995, our
veterinarians have performed more
than 147,000 surgeries. We provide the
surgeries at a very low cost to encourage
pet owners to have their pets spayed or
neutered. Feral cats and pit bull surgeries
are free. This service is so important to
our mission that we believe in providing
the surgeries to any pet owner regardless
of income or zipcode. We also assist
other animal shelters by performing
these surgeries at a discounted rate. We
have truly made a significant impact on
the overpopulation in the Chicago area
and we will continue every day until
there is no longer a need.
The Bruckner Rehabilitation Center, the
Virginia Butts Berger Cat Clinic and our
Dog Rehabilitation Center provide care
for sick, under-age, and injured animals
until they are well enough or old enough
to be adopted.
K now Your Charity
and the Impact of
Your Gift
Most of us know that pets make wonderful companions and
many of us consider them to be family members. Some families
are in a situation where they cannot afford to provide veterinary
care for their beloved pet. Since 1916 our Charity Veterinary
Clinic has been providing medical care for pets in Chicago
whose owners would otherwise not be able to afford it.
prevalent in their lives. It is our hope that humane education
will someday be mandatory in schools so that every child
will learn that it’s cool to be kind, not cruel. Additionally, our
partnership with the University of Illinois, College of Veterinary
Medicine provides the Veterinary Mentoring Program for high
school students that are interested in animal-related careers.
We broke ground this winter to rebuild our Veterinary Clinic.
The new clinic will provide a more efficient space to continue
our work spaying/neutering and caring for sick and injured
animals.
Our Education & Training Center also hosts presentations such
as animal-related workshops, Pet First Aid and CPR classes,
and a free pet loss and grief support group.
Our Short-Term Accommodations for Emergencies (SAFE)
program provides temporary housing for pets whose owners
are involved in crisis situations. The program was initially
started to assist domestic violence victims and has expanded
to include other situations such as medical emergencies, fires,
floods, or home foreclosure. We provide housing for the pets
until the owners are able to get situated.
Michael Vick’s story of animal cruelty is known throughout
the country. Unfortunately, cruel acts toward animals are
a common occurrence. Here in Chicago, our humane
investigators respond to complaints of cruelty, neglect and
abuse every day. In 2012, 1,600 complaints were received
compared to 2,600 in 2011. With all of the outreach and
education we do, it could be that the tide is turning.
The Anti-Cruelty Society had our first four-wheel rescue
vehicle in 1914! Today, our vehicles can be spotted throughout
the Chicago area helping pets in need. Pets with no shelter,
an owner suspected of beating his dog, and a cat left in
an apartment after the owners moved out – these are all true
stories and we were here for all of these animals. We educate
the owners about proper pet care or we rescue the animal
from the situation. With current budgetary pressures on
local governments, our work on this front is more important
than ever.
Twelve years ago, we constructed our Education & Training
Center. Education and prevention have always been at the
heart of our mission. Our educators have been in the Chicago
schools teaching compassion and respect for all living beings
since 1937! Over the past 22 years, we have produced seven
films: Protecting the Web; The Power of Compassion; A New
Friend for Life; Patterns of Abuse: Exploding the Cycle; One
Last Fight: Exposing the Shame; Making a Difference; and
Safety Around Animals were distributed nation-wide to
schools, libraries, humane societies, and other appropriate
organizations. Each dealt with relevant topics for the time.
Our anti-violence, after school program provides high school
students positive alternatives to the violence that is often
We have been training humans and their pets for more than
30 years. We teach Canine Good Citizen (CGC) classes
(the certification a pet needs to perform pet visitation). Our
volunteers with their CGC trained dogs visit the sick and
elderly, bringing a furry friend to those who can benefit most.
Our behavior specialists spend time with the animals in our
care to determine the best type of home/family for them.
Since many animals are turned into shelters due to behavior
problems, and many of these problems can be resolved with
advice and some patience, we have provided a free behavior
hotline for more than 25 years. Our behavior specialists
provide advice to pet owners and potential pet owners to help
keep pets in their homes.
With so many charities vying for your support, it is so important
to educate yourself. The Anti-Cruelty Society, also known as
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Illinois
(SPCA of Illinois) was founded in 1899. We are a comprehensive
animal welfare organization with a mission of building a
community of caring by helping pets and educating people.
Located on the corner of LaSalle and Grand in Chicago, our
doors are open for any animal in need, 365 days a year. We are
a private Illinois 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. We receive
no funds from the government or from umbrella organizations.
We depend on your support to continue our commitment of
caring for the animals and educating the humans. Now you
know who we are, so please help us by sharing our story and
every time you give a gift of support, know your charity and
make sure your gift is used in the way it was intended.

Something that makes The Anti-Cruelty Society stand out from other shelters
is the fact that we are an open-admission animal shelter, meaning we take
in ANY animal in need, regardless of their condition. Because we believe
in giving every animal a chance, we see a large array of cats and dogs,
including those with behavioral and medical issues. We are committed to
work with each individual animal to prepare them to go onto the adoption
floor where he or she waits patiently for a new forever home.
Lily, a 3-year-old pit bull mix, is one such dog who needed our help and care.
She was surrendered to us in March 2012 after her owner said that she was
having a conflict with another animal in the home. After being examined by
our veterinarians, it was discovered that she was suffering from a fracture
of her right ankle joint. Due to the severity of her injury, our veterinarians
decided that amputating her leg was the best option.

Dr. Lester Fisher is widely recognized as
a pioneer in humane and comprehensive
health care for all animals, large and
small. Dr. Fisher has been a member
of The Anti-Cruelty Society’s Board of
Directors since 1956.
Anna picking up Lily from foster care
After spending time recuperating
and working through physical
therapy in our facility, Lily went to
a foster home where she was able
to become accustomed to having
only three legs. She barely noticed
that she had lost her leg and made
a full, strong recovery. Lily surprised
everyone with her sunny personality
and determination to live a full and
happy life.
Just 10 days after being fostered,
Lily found her new best friend and
forever home with Anna Yocius, a
wonderful woman who opened up
her heart to an animal in need. Anna
was familiar with The Anti-Cruelty
Society and would frequently visit
with our animals a few times a month
prior to adopting Lily. She has always
been a dog lover and was looking
for one to bring into her life. After
hearing about Lily and following
her throughout her journey, Anna
decided that it was the perfect time
to rescue Lily and bring her into a
home where she could live life to the
fullest.
“Today, Lily loves going to the dog
park where she kisses every dog
she sees. Going for walks, playing
with her dog cousin, Noah, napping
on the couch, and chewing on toys
are among her favorite activities.
You would never know that Lily had
three legs—it definitely does not
hold her back and she never misses
a beat,” says Anna.
Her smile and big personality
made her famous among the staff
and volunteers of The Anti-Cruelty
Society. Now she is able to share
her love with each person that
she comes in contact with. Thank
you Anna, for giving Lily a second
chance at a happy life.

to give in order to help the dogs in our
care. Her hard work and dedication not
only inspired us, but also encouraged us
to create a program that would recognize

children who put helping animals before
themselves. Kam became the first
member of our Pals for Pets Program, as
she set a great example of what it means
to be passionate about something.
For two years, Kam saved her money.
She saved, saved, and saved some
more. She held homemade fundraisers,
sold rubber bracelets, and saved her
allowance in order to purchase a $500
dogPACER treadmill for the canines at
The Anti-Cruelty Society.
Over the past couple of years, Kam has
spent a lot of time researching the benefits
of physical exercise for dogs. She learned
about the importance of exercising your
Kam is allergic to animals and can’t have
a pet, but still wanted to help animals.
Once she saved her money and
purchased the dogPACER treadmill, she
contacted us to donate it in person. It was
heartwarming to see how excited Kam
was to provide the dogs in our facility
with another form of exercise to help
them burn off some energy. Her hard
work over the past two years had paid off
as we explained to her how the dogs in
our facility would benefit from her very
generous donation. Since we do not put
time limits on how long an animal is in
our care, the dogPACER treadmill is a
unique opportunity for our high-energy or
long-term dogs to get additional exercise.
Thanks to Kam, Pals for Pets was officially
launched. This program recognizes
children that raise money for us (e.g.
running lemonade stands or choosing
to have people donate to the Society
instead of getting birthday gifts). These
children are passionate, dedicated,
thoughtful people who make it a priority
to help animals.
Teach the children in your life a wonderful
lesson about the importance of giving
back. Once in the Pals for Pets Program,
they will receive an official certificate and
their story and photos will be displayed
on our website. The rewarding feeling
that they will receive is priceless!
