Your HETCo Newsletter
Issue 3
Welcome to the third issue of our HETComms.
Six months have passed since our first launch and many important and positive
things have happened for our project since then. I would like to highlight one of
them above all others, because it represents a tremendous achievement for all
of us involved in this challenge and a great benefit to our customers and airlines.
I am talking about the completion of the substructure (KD43). We have achieved
this critical date 37 days ahead of schedule. This milestone is one of the 3 most
important on the project, along with making the Building weather-tight and the
completion of the work. The fact that we have made it ahead of programme
means a great benefit to BAA and stakeholders.
I want to personally thank you all for the hard work you've done to achieve this
and I want to encourage you to carry on working with the same vigor and
dedication to continue to get all our objectives.
Pablo Riesco, HETCo Director
“Just wanted to let you know I bragged about HETCo’s performance regarding the trigger achievement on T2A.
You all did very well in bringing that milestone ahead.
Thanks from my team to yours.”
Steve Morgan, BAA Capital Director
Going Silver
The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) held several award ceremonies around the country over the months of March and April. We are extremely proud to be able to announce that we
have been awarded a Silver Site Award for our Terminal 2 A site.
Since the CCS came into existence in 1997, there have been annual awards given to the most
considerate sites in the UK who take part in this voluntary scheme of good and considerate practices. The Scheme is a national initiative set up by the Construction industry to improve its image.
The principal areas that the construction industry as a whole is concerned with are: the environment, the workforce, and the general public.
Jim Farquharson accepted the award on behalf of HETCo at an award ceremony in London on
6th April.
“This is a great measurement of how we are performing on site - not merely from a programme
and quality perspective but also regarding our behaviour in this highly sensitive location. We
should all be very proud of what this award represents for us and I would like to say a big thank
you to all of you for your contribution to this success”.
Project Update
On Wednesday 23 March 11 there was an incident on site which
ended a period of 1.3 million man-hours being worked without a
reportable accident. The accident was as a result of a crane
driver falling from his crane whilst taking a ‘short cut’ back to his
cab and reduces the HETCo 12 month rolling AFR to 0.09.
Immediate site workforce meetings were held to emphasize that
everyone is responsible for their own safety and also that of their
working comrades – it was stressed that extra vigilance and care
was needed and zero tolerance was an absolute priority.
With regards to progress, early achievement of Key Date 43 by
the end of March was reached (as mentioned above)– this some
6 weeks earlier than the contractual Key Date. Also FIVE out of
FIVE target milestones were achieved in the month (eight out of Having regained their programme, Watson continued their nighteight achieved this year to date).
shift work up until the Easter break to create a ‘shock absorber’
and allow progress to roof and façade to be completed.
Inasus has commenced work on the installation of the apron level
façade. The Cooling Station, deep drainage, removal of PQ concrete, pits & ducts for the Stands and the FLaNs all continue to
gain momentum.

Incident and Injury Free
Hector Martin, SRC Upper Floors Project Manager, and Lorna
Byrne, H,S&E Advisor, attended the IIF Train the Trainer
course in April. Here they are with course organiser, Janet
Borejszo, receiving their certificates.
The Incident and Injury Free (IIF) Programme is a fundamental ingredient of the
T2A Project. Through this programme we want to create a culture free of incident
and injuries and ensure everyone returns home safely every day. T2A provides us
with an opportunity to excel in regard to safety performance and alter the perception of the construction industry. However, this will only be achieved with commitment and responsibility from all involved. IIF looks to move safety to be a core
value for everyone rather than just one of a list of competing priorities.
Training for the IIF Programme will be delivered to everyone and all new starters
will attend a session within 4 weeks of their arrival.
We would like your support and commitment to make this happen and
request that attendance at this workshop be a priority.
Health and Safety Awards
March saw our monthly Health & Safety awards presented to many of you. The three winners
of the £100 gift vouchers for Hazard/Near Miss were Stuart McLennan from CHt, Gary
Robinson from Munnellys and Simon Allen from HETCo. Simon subsequently gave his
award to site operatives who he has recommended for good safe behaviour. The £25 gift
vouchers were awarded to Peter Deaves from Watsons for ensuring good safe practices during night works; Bob Fellows from Watsons for helping the site be safer, reacting immediately
to an incident which occurred and communicating with HETCo promptly; to Billy Singh from
Expanded for ensuring PPE compliance with all ops in area is maintained and continually
stays on top of exclusion zones with Watsons; Charlie Sullivan from Expanded who organises the works and area safely; to Mick Loftus from Expanded for spending the last 8 months
working in a safe manner and ensuring work areas are kept free of slips and trips; Neil Bennett from Select for improving all aspects of CHt lifting plans and ensuring a high safe standard of lifting at all times; to David Clack from

David Cox Planning Manager
How did you get started in the business?
Purely by chance. I took a job as a labourer on
a John Laing Construction project, spent a year
in a concrete gang and decided to stay in the
industry.
What was your last personal challenge?
Remembering not to come to work on Good
Friday.
If you could wake up anywhere in the world
tomorrow morning, where would you like to
be?
Bondi Beach would be nice.
How do you see the future of HETCo and
T2A? We have hit some really important milestones on time and the new building is getting
closer and closer to our office every day.
When you look around at HETCo, what do
you feel most proud of? Seeing the building
taking shape.
What are the Planning team’s principal milestones achieved? Getting the programme updated and submitted on time every month is a
real challenge.
What are the challenges that lie ahead for
your team? Providing a programme to
The Bath Half
Do you have a motto that you live by?
Everyone can have their say.
What gets you up in the morning?
Trying to beat the traffic.
What made you interested in your line of
business? I was interested in how the buildings went together and also liked the idea of
starting with a blank sheet of paper and finishing with a functioning building.
How has the project changed/developed
over the last few months? It was tough going
through the winter and progress is picking up
with the better weather.
Issue 3
manage coordination of the fitting out is going
to be a massive task.
What is the latest new skill you learned at
work? I have spent a bit more time than I expected learning how to use Earned Value properly.
What is the latest new skill you learned outside of work? I have been having Tai Chi lessons for a few months.
Who would you invite to a fantasy dinner
party?
Chris Martin – he could show me some guitar
chords; Al Pacino would have a few interesting
Hollywood stories...as would Marilyn Monroe..and Andrew Strauss because I NEVER get
tired of hearing about winning the Ashes!
What would you like to happen before the
end of the year?
A lottery win and being on programme
Who has influenced you the most?
Lots of people, but mainly a couple of former
bosses who allowed me to learn from my own
mistakes.
Teodoro Alvarez, Design Director (4th from left), Guillermo Ripado, TITLE, (7th from left), Pablo Riesco, HETCo Director (8th from left),

BATH HALF MARATHON, affectionately known as the “Bath Half” is
one of the longest existing half marathons and most popular city runs
around today. It certainly was among our HETCo team as many of you
chose to run the 13.1 miles along and around the river Avon on 6th
March 2011. Apart from being one of the biggest social events this year
(families and friends flocked to the West for the show!) the personal
challenge it posed for all participants was immense. Everyone made
sure to make the most of the race and to achieve what they set out to
do.
Pablo Riesco, Hetco Director, ran to “...finish the run first of all. Then to
finish it under two hours. Then to finish the run before someone who
shall remain unnamed!” He managed to reach all three of his goals finishing the race, his first ever, in 1:55. Teodoro Alvarez, Design Director,
was also running his first half marathon in Bath. He completed in 2:14
and is looking forward to the rest of his marathon career! David Fanjul,
previously Civils Contracts Manager, ran across the finishing line as the
clock struck 1:40:02 just beaten by Guillermo Ripado, Contracts Manager, 1:40:01. Antonio Rubio, Project Manager - Envelope, was very
pleased to have finished at 2:07 but has since been seriously bitten by
the half marathon bug and completed another one last week in Spain at
under 2 hours...so practice does make perfect?!

who’s who: HETCo planning team
Issue 3
Planners L-R: Arthur Cliffe, Kevin Wilmot,Simon Stirrett, Matt Maciejewski, Neal Sagar, Garry Garson, Mike Roast, Spencer Calaharn, Tony Hawke.
Simon Stirrett
I’ve been working as planner on
many BAA projects at Gatwick,
Dublin, Stansted and Heathrow
where I have been since 1997. I
joined Ferrovial in 2008, but have
been on T2A since 2006 when I
began working with Mace on the
scheme design.
I live near the New Forest with my
wife Val, my son Phillip, and daughters Robyn and Jade. They’re now at
Universities in Bournemouth, Missouri USA and Southampton.
In my spare time I'm an FA Referee
at Level 4 in Hampshire, Wessex
and Southern Conference leagues.
I’m a season ticket holder at
Southampton - now back in the
Championship league next season. I
enjoy walking and have completed
the LOR 3 peaks in 24 hrs - Ben
Nevis, Scar Fell, and Snowdon. In
2007 I began walking the South
coast path from Minehead to Poole 630m over the next few yrs finishing
in 2012/3.
Matt Maciejewski
I joined Laing O’ Rourke in 1996 and
have worked on a number of projects
including a theatre, college, shopping
centre, the new air traffic control
tower at Heathrow, T 5 and a number
of projects for Thames Water before
joining Hetco in 2009.
I live in Aylesbury with my wife and
sons - who are at Primary School. I
enjoy playing football and cricket.
We’re planning a trip to Menorca in
August to soak up the sun and do
plenty of swimming.
Oh … and I support West Ham ...away trips to Southampton and
Bournemouth next season then!
Neal Sagar
I started in construction in1990 for
Laing O'Rourke on a wide range of
projects in various sectors from Highways, Nuclear to Utilities. I’ve mostly
worked in Planning Dept except for a
period prior to working on Welsh
Water where I was on the leadership
team accountable for delivery of the
Trunk Mains projects.
I live in Cardiff with my wife and 3
daughters who keep us occupied.
We spent an enjoyable Easter away
with plenty of swimming and cycling
at Centre Parcs - now long forgotten
since being back at work!!!
Spencer Calaharn
I joined Laing O’Rourke in 1994 as a
trainee and have now progressed to
a Senior Planning Manager. I have
done all of my training with Laing
O‘Rourke who sponsored my BSc
Hons Degree in Construction Management which I studied at Southbank University.
In my 16 yrs experience with the
company, I’ve worked on many different projects including Commercial,
Retail, Residential and Defence Projects in London and the South East.
I joined the planning team here at
T2 in June last year. Prior to joining
the Hetco team I spent 2.5 yrs in the
Middle East working for Project Management Services division of Aldar
Laing O’Rourke on a £9b development in Abu Dhabi called Al Raha
Beach. Working overseas has given
me a good understanding of working
on mega-projects.
I’m married to Rachel and our first
baby is due in July. I’m spending
most of my spare time preparing for
his or her arrival - Mostly stocking up
on sleep!
I enjoy playing golf, watching football
and running. I’m an avid Fulham fan
and get down to Craven Cottage as
much as I can. I also run every Saturday with a local club.
Mike Roast
I’ve been involved on the project
since mid 2008, working with Crown
House and with HETCO since 2009
as the planner for M&E works and
the Cooling Station. I have spent the
past 10 yrs working on projects at
Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted –
including T5, the Terminal Extension
at Stansted and the Pier Segregations at Gatwick.
As at work, I have tried to maintain
European relations, with my French
wife and 2 bilingual children. To
relax, I like running and football, although the opportunities are reducing with workload and two sporty kids
that my wife and I taxi around. I’m a
big rugby fan, supporting Harlequins
and I am involved in coaching and
refereeing my son’s age group. I also
follow Arsenal (not the other North
London Champions League one season wonders!).
Garry Garson
I joined Laing O’Rourke in 2006, and
have worked on a variety of projects
in and around London (business and
residential). Prior to joining HETCO
in 2009, I was involved in the planning for the One Hyde Park project in
Knightsbridge.
I am currently studying a BSc in Design & Construction Management at
the University of Greenwich. It takes
up much of my time. I am fast approaching the end of my 4th yr (of 5)
and I’m looking forward to finishing
and getting my life back!
I spend the majority of my free time
with my partner Claire and our 9
month old son Finley. I enjoy most
sports; running, keeping fit and am a
boxing enthusiast. I’m also a big football fan and support Arsenal (enjoying the fact that Sp*rs won’t finish
above us...for the 16th consecutive
season!)
Kevin Wilmot
I’m 34 and recently married. Originally from South Africa, I’ve been a
UK resident since 2003.
I like to play golf at the weekend but
my game is very wayward at best. I
play well but lack consistency. My
vocabulary on the golf course can be
quite colourful.
I enjoy watching sport but am not a
great footy fan. My Brasilian wife is.
I’m an avid Rugby Union & Cricket
supporter and prefer the Southern
Hemisphere Competitions supporting
their teams more than the northern
ones! But I still respect them!
Being a true South African, I can’t re-
Congratulations!
Jose Luis Bermudez,
Construction Manager,
and his wife, Janet, had
their little girl Maria Elena
on 7th March.
HETComms
Peter Yates, Project
Engineer, and his
wife, Anna, had a
baby boy called Charlie on 24th March.
sist a BBQ (“Braai” in South Africa)
when the sun shines. Of course, it
must be proper meat on the barbie
and not vegetables, like chicken, for
example! (?!). I like traveling and
save my holidays for South Africa
and Brasil - now a favoured destination!
We sometimes travel to Europe . I
love Paris and Greece but have yet
to go to Italy & Spain.
Tony Hawke
I have worked at Ferrovial as a Planner since 2009. Before working at
Heathrow I worked on the Bradford
Schools BSF Project for 18 months.
Prior to Ferrovial I worked for Shepherd Construction as a Planner & before that at Kier Construction working
in Site Management.
Outside of work I spend the majority
of my time with my wife Bev and our
2 daughters, Emily 8 & Lucy 5 back
home in Liverpool. I enjoy watching
most sports (not playing, as i’m getting on a bit) especially football & I
support Liverpool.
Arthur Cliffe
I’ve worked in the M&E industry
since leaving school in 1969. I
started Planning in 1976 with Haden
Young (Now BBES) on the largest
Hospital Project in Europe.
I’ve progressed through various roles
from Project Management Surveying
and Planning. I even had a spell as
Labour Manager so my experience is
quite varied.
I Joined HETCo in August 2010 to
undertake the Integration of the ICS
System Programme with Daniel Garcia-Bernalt and his team.
Prior to HETCo I’ve spent a considerable time with Laing O’Rourke and
BAA at Heathrow Airport so there are
many familiar faces around!
Outside of work is a mix of home
Handyman as my wife Lesley encourages me in the odd jobs that
need doing, taxi and delivery driver
for my daughters at Brighton Uni.
When I do get the time I like to visit
the gym, cycle and play golf.
Ignacio Pacheco,
Substructure
Project Leader
and his wife
Raquel had their
little girl, Camila,
on 21st March.
