PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Fostering art in our community: it’s part of our
mission. In the next few weeks and months Naperville Art League will be visibly busy as some
especially exciting opportunities take place.
On Monday, August 29 at 7:30 pm we are teaming up with the After Hours Film Society to host a
showing of the top-rated documentary film
“Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict” at Naperville’s
Ogden 6 theater. Tickets are available from the
theater in advance, and since seating is limited, I
recommend you go online now to order yours.
Peggy Guggenheim was a prolific collector of
contemporary art who led a colorful life. Her
collection is housed in her museum in Venice,
Italy. Watch our Facebook site for an interview
with Debbie Venezia, our Executive Director,
about the film. This is a fundraiser event and
well worth a bag of popcorn.
The Naperville Art League juried art show at
North Central College’s Schoenherr Gallery is
open to the community and continues through
Sept 4. Having been to the wonderful artists’
reception, it is a must-see for you and your
friends. Many thanks to NCC for this opportunity
to showcase some of our member talent.
Saturday August 13, from 8:00 am to 1:00pm,
stop by our Art Sale! in the parking lot of the
Naperville Fine Art Center & Gallery. About 15
artists will be selling jewelry, ceramics, paintings
and a lot more. Parking abounds across the
street. Talk up this event to your friends. If it
rains, the sale will be in the classroom. Thanks to
Sue Keller, chairperson.
Tick tock. The countdown has begun for our biggest event of the year, the Riverwalk Fine Art Fair
to be held Sept.17-18 in downtown Naperville.
Over 130 artists and tens of thousands of visitors converge for this award-winning fair. It’s an
event that requires many volunteers from our
organization and is guaranteed to make you
proud to play a role.
By the way, did you know all of our art classes
are open to the public? Okay, did you know we’ve
added a bunch of new classes such as figurative
drawing, mosaics, colored pencil, and lots more?
Take a look at the NAL website class listing.
Join in the fun!

Labor Day Parade
At least two volunteers are needed to walk in
the parade and represent NAL. You’ll be in
the IndieBound section of the parade. For
more details, call Debbie Venezia.
BOARD NOTES
Parking Lot Art Sale: Scheduled for Aug. 13,
13+ artists have committed to exhibit. Members are encouraged to promote the event on
social media. Drop Off hours for “Selfie”/Pick
Up for “Sunday Afternoon” have been adjusted to Sat., Aug. 13 noon—4:00 pm so that
members will have an opportunity to shop
and outside visitors will see our gallery intact.
Labor Day Parade: Marchers are needed for
the Labor Day parade on Mon., Sept. 5. A
volunteer is also needed to paint a sign for
NAL. Interested parties please contact Rob
Stolarczuk at [email protected].
Riverwalk Fine Art Fair: Community members
are unaware of the relationship between NAL
and RFAF. The Board is looking for ways to
make the two synonymous. Ideas included
having balloons at the Info Booth and perhaps a promotional video on the NAL website.
Also, volunteers are needed to help run the
event. See the insert inside this newsletter.
NAL Goes to the Movies: NAL in conjunction
with the After Hours will host a presentation
of "Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict" at the Ogden 6 Theatre on Mon., Aug. 29 at 7:30 pm.
NAL members, along with members of other
arts organizations and the film society will
receive discounted admission with ID. This
screening will serve as a fundraiser for the
League’ Classroom Renovation Project.
NAL’s Teacher Compensation Structure: In
light of our current financial situation, the
Board discussed changing the current compensation structure for teachers to make it
more equitable for the league. No action was
taken. A report on the subject will be presented at the next meeting.
Holiday Show: Volunteers are needed to help
with the event.
Social Media: Seeking savvy individuals to
help with our online presence. If interested,
contact Rob at [email protected].

will be distributed on Aug. 26, this month’s
Fourth Friday.
If you missed the opening of our off-site exhibit,
“Monsoon” at NCC’s Schoenherr Gallery, you
will still have time to view the beautiful work.
The show runs through Sun., Sept. 4.
With all this talk of the new game, Pokemon
Go, where people search for the main character Pikachu, I decided to call our Zika virus
“Zikachu.”
Have an Olympian spirit filled August and
“Zikachu”-less summer!

NAL FUNDRAISER AUGUST 29
A special screening of “Peggy Guggenheim: Art
Addict” will be held on Mon., Aug. 29 at the Ogden 6 Theatre, 1227 E. Ogden, Naperville. This
program will serve as a fundraiser for NAL’s
Classroom Renovation Project. Please show
your support by joining fellow art addicts for this
stunning and delightful character study.
PEGGY GUGGENHEIM: ART ADDICT. A colorful
woman who was not only ahead of her time but
helped to define it, Peggy Guggenheim was an
heiress to her family fortune who became a central figure in the modern art movement. As she
moved through the cultural upheaval of the 20th
century, she collected not only art, but artists.
Her colorful personal history included such figures as Samuel Beckett, Max Ernst, Jackson
Pollock, Alexander Calder, Marcel Duchamp as
well as countless others. While fighting through
personal tragedy, she maintained her vision to
build one of the most important collections of
modern art, now enshrined in her Venetian
palazzo.

CALL FOR

VOLUNTEERS
TO ALL NAL MEMBERS:
We need your enthusiasm and skills to help your Naperville Art League host its 31st annual Riverwalk Fine Art Fair,
Sept. 17 and 18, 2016! Now is an excellent time to show your support and join in the fun. Any amount of time you can
give will be most appreciated—2 or 3 or 4 hours or all day. Visit or call NAL (630-355-2530) to sign up. This year we
need help with:
RFAF Artists’ Packets Assembly: Wed., Sept. 7 at 10:00 am at NFAC&G.
On Site Artist Check-in: Fri., Sept. 16, 11:00 am — 10:00 pm and Sat., Sept. 17, 6:30 — 9:00 am. Check-in station
is on Webster St. between Jefferson and Jackson.
Judge Escort: Sat., Sept. 17, 9:30 am to approximately 2:00 pm and we’ll buy you lunch. We need 4 escorts.
Booth Sitting: Sat. and Sun., 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The artists appreciate this service and the booth sitters enjoy
it, as well. As a booth sitter you will walk along an assigned area or be available for dispatch from the NAL Info
Booth. Should an artist need a break, you will mind his/her stock and till… not process sales.
NAL Info Booth Set-up & Teardown: These are the times we need muscle to haul equipment from NFAC&G to the
RFAF site and set it up and then return it all to the NFAC&G for storage post-show. We will need someone to drive
the 14-ft. U-Haul truck Fri. and Sun. Loading will begin at the NFAC&G at 1:00 pm on Fri., Sept. 16; Sun. teardown
at RFAF is 5:00 pm.
NAL Info Booth Operation: during event hours both days. You must be willing to learn to process sales. (We sell a
lot of posters.) We will provide written instructions to outline answers to common questions and requests. Also, we
need a few people at 8:00 am Saturday morning at 8:30 am Sunday morning to open shop for business.
Exit Crew: Sun., Sept. 18, 5:30 to 8:00 pm. We need two people at each of three artist exit areas (Main & Jackson, Webster & Jackson, Eagle & Jackson) to move and replace lightweight traffic barricades to allow artists to
leave and to deter regular traffic from entering the area.
Artists’ Reception: Sat., Sept. 17 from 4:30 to 8:30 pm at the tavern at the Pre-Emption House at Naper Settlement, corner of Aurora Avenue and Webster Street. We need volunteers to oversee the function.
Please join us!
Together we’ll make the 31st RFAF
a wonderful event!
