Rebecca Brown and market manager Helen Martin.
The buck stops at the farmers' market
by Trina Berlo
Be on the lookout for TD Market Bucks
being distributed in the area, which can
be redeemed at the Creemore Farmers’
Market and 10 other markets in the
southern Ontario greenbelt region.
Market officials applied to be
included in the program and were
successful in getting $3,500 coupons
with $5 each, which will be distributed
by local businesses.
In total, $42,000 in TD Market Bucks
are being distributed by participating
markets in the region. This is the
third year of the TD Market Bucks
promotion, contributing a total of
$75,000. The program is a joint project of the
Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation
and Greenbelt Farmers’ Market
Network, with funding provided by
TD Bank.
“We have always championed
farmers’ markets as terrific hubs for
buying fresh, local food and supporting
farmers in our communities,” said
Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation
CEO Burkhard Mausberg. “The
Market Bucks program encourages
folks who haven’t been to the market
before to come and see firsthand the
difference local makes.” Locally, farmers’ market officials
hope the coupons will bring new
visitors to the market and rekindle
interest for those who have not attended
in a while.
Creemore Farmers’ Market board
member Rebecca Brown said there has
been a lot of interest from Creemore
businesses.
The coupons can be redeemed at
participating market vendors until
Oct. 31.
The market bucks are as good as cash
for any product at any booth and the
vendor will then be reimbursed.
Creemore businesses are allowed to
distribute TD Market Bucks in any way
they wish, perhaps with a purchase or
through contests. The coupons can be
redeemed anytime after August 1.
“The market bucks are sponsored
by TD Banks for the purpose of
infusing the farmers’ markets with new
visitors, who will shop local for fresh
produce which bring prosperity to local
producers. We prefer that the market
bucks are used to buy food products
however that is up to the purchaser. It
is our hope that every market buck gets
used at one of the markets. If you have
one and will not be using it please regift it to someone who could and will
use it,” said market manager Helen
Martin.
The community is shocked and

Improv duo performing at dinner-and-a-show
by Trina Berlo
Two of Canada’s top improv comedians
will be performing in Creemore.
Improv teacher Peter Madore is
bringing a comedic duo to Creemore,
with the help of his students.
Madore has been doing improv for 15
years, starting out in Toronto, but when
he moved to Creemore he thought he
may have to leave it behind.
“I was the only guy. I really thought I
was done. I thought, I’m never going to
find another opportunity to do that here,”
said Madore. In talking with neighbours,
he discovered there was some interest.
Madore had taught improv classes in
Toronto and some people expressed
taking a class locally. It started with one
class a couple of years ago and Madore
has since taken a break from it, taking
time for his studies but he recently
revived the class.
“After that first class there was so
much more interest from the students
to understand what does this look like
when it is produced and performed in
a really professional way?” He said
that brought about the Monkey Toast
performance at Avening Hall and then
another show in Collingwood two years
ago.
Then recently, the students put
on a class show at The Sovereign.
Madore said it was a lively, high-energy
performance by the six-member troupe
with friends and family members in
attendance.
“It was really the energy behind the

group that propelled me to really see
this as a possibility of doing a show.
I couldn’t have done it without them
because I have had outstanding support
from all of these people who took the
class,” said Madore. “It’s really a group
effort.”
He said the next logical step was
to offer a professional show, to step
out and offer something different
entertainmentwise, in this area. Madore
has booked improv comedians Adam
Cawley and Rob Norman to perform
in Creemore on August 6.
“They are the leading figures of
improv in the country so it was really a
no-brainer to go to them,” said Madore,
who knows them through the Toronto
improv scene.
Second City alumni and best friends
Norman and Cawley, also known as
RN and Cawls, have been performing
together for 10 years since meeting in a
sketch troupe.
“That kind of disbanded but we
enjoyed each other so much that we
stuck together,” said Cawley.
He said they continued to work
together, including their time at Second
City and in addition to their duo created
Mantown with two other comics, which
won the Canadian Comedy Award
for the best improv troupe in 2013.
The following year, Cawley won The
Canadian Comedy Award for Best Male
Improviser in Canada.
In Creemore, after warming up with
some traditional improv sketches, they
will perform a 30-minute or so one-act
improvised play inspired by a single
suggestion from the audience, with
each one doing multiple characters and
changing scenes.
“This is where all the improv
technique comes in with trusting your
partner and listening, paying attention to
every little minute detail but the thrill for
us of not exactly knowing how anything
is going to go,” said Cawley.
Madore hopes to develop the concept
into a dinner-and-a-show series in the
future.
Tickets for buffet dinner and a show
at The Sovereign on Saturday, August
6 costs $50. Dinner is at 7:30 p.m.
Reservations for dinner and show are
recommended, and are being accepted
at Sovereign Bistro and Grill, 157 Mill
St., Creemore or phone 705-466-9999.

Farmers' markets connect
growers to buyers
Research is showing that the benefits of farmers’
markets goes deeper than attracting tourists and they
do a lot to build and strengthen community.
Stroll through the Creemore Farmers’ Market
on a Saturday morning and you’ll see neighbours
visiting, coffee in one hand, dirt bomb in the other,
cloth bag bursting with fresh greens. It is part of a
farmers’ market network that is proving to be good
for community and business because you’ll also see
consumers chatting directly with the people who grow
the food they are buying.
The Greenbelt Farmers’ Market Network 2015
research report (December 2015) surveyed market
managers and 108 market vendors at 30 markets in
and around the Greenbelt in summer 2015 and found
that overall, markets appear to be growing stronger
as a destination for fresh local food.
Farmers and shoppers have developed bonds of
trust, says the research. Farmers have found that
market shoppers want what they produce and shoppers
trust this source for quality, local food.
Another benefit is that markets are contributing to
strengthening and growing the local food system by
connecting farmers to chefs, food service, caterers,
local retailers, small scale processors, and other
buyers.
The study found that markets appear to be growing
stronger as a destination for fresh local food, and
demand for fresh vegetables continues to climb and
retains the top spot far ahead of other categories
growers bring to market, including fruit, cut flowers
and meat, and;
• 29 per cent of farm vendors report a greater share
of revenues from market sales compared to their
overall farm business sales;
• On average, 40 per cent of land on a farm is
dedicated to growing produce for markets
• 63 per cent of farm vendors report that markets
help them connect with other buyers, compared to 53
per cent in 2009;
• 21 per cent of meat vendors now sell dark meat,
compared to 8 per cent in 2015 reflecting a growing
interest in buying natural meats;
• Farmers are deriving more of their business
income from markets. Farmers have learned that
markets can be secure and predictable sales channels;
• The role of markets as a hub to access other sales
channels is growing;
• The evidence that local food sales are prompting
farmers to grow new varieties and increase acreage
for market production;
• The farmer sector is expanding with the
development of new, small-scale farms geared to
growing produce for the local market;
• Farmers are responding to the increased demand
for local food by expanding sales channels to
include farmgate/farm stands and CSA (Community
Supported Agriculture) sales/distribution;
• Most farmers believe that the demand for local
food is on the rise.

Creemore photographer Jennifer Eccles has traveled extensively in the
past year and is displaying some of her photos at Curiosity House Books
and gallery until August 7.
Photographer explores the
globe, shares memories
by Trina Berlo
Jennifer Eccles is currently showing
an eclectic mix of photos taken during
her travels over the past year.
The show entitled Memories of
a Gypsy , in reference to Eccles’
wanderlust, features 20 photos from
as far away as Africa, Cuba, Mexico,
England and closer to home in Ontario.
“It’s a spectrum of places that I have
been, moments along the way that I
have captured and want to share with
people,” said Eccles.
She said although she has taken
photos for many years, this is her first
show. The photos are a collection of
landscapes and streetscapes, with an
emphasis on colour. All of the countries
also have a lot of history and old
buildings, some of which are crumbling
and some are lovingly maintained.
Through her lens, Eccles strives to
show everyday scenes from a different
perspective.
“I want people to be able to look
at the pictures and travel through my
eyes, to experience a place that they
may never get to go see, through their
imagination by looking at the photo,”
she said.
Eccles said seeing a different way of
life and learning about other cultures
sometimes makes her appreciate her
life back home and sometimes helps
deepen her perspective.
Memories of a Gypsy will be on sale
in the gallery at Curiosity House Books
until August 7.

Fred’s Funnies
With tears in his eyes, the little boy told his
kindergarten teacher that only one pair of boots
was left in the classroom and they weren’t his.
The teacher searched and searched, but she
couldn’t find any other boots.
“Are you sure these boots aren’t yours?” she
asked. “I’m sure,” the little boy sobbed. “Mine
had snow on them.”

Canadian National Draft Horse Show this weekend
CANADA DAY
THANK YOU
The great draft horses will strut their
stuff this weekend, July 30 and 31, at
the third annual Canadian National
Draft Horse Show.
The show begins with halter classes
at 9 a.m. on Saturday followed by
hitch classes at 1:15 p.m., after the
opening ceremonies. The schedule is
the same on Sunday.
The Essa Canadian National Draft
The Creemore Legion Branch 397 wishes to thank all those individuals that
helped in the organization, execution and cleanup of the Creemore Canada
Day activities. Including the all day Street Hockey tournament participants,
which helped draw an ever-growing crowd of spectators. We would like to
extend a special thanks to all the companies, organizations and individuals
without whose financial support none of the activities could have taken form;
especially the fireworks.
The Legion’s Canada Day 50/50 draw was won by Jamie Grant of Stayner,
who went away with a prize of $635.00. Although, the real winner of that
draw was the Creemore Legion’s Children’s program who will benefit from
the other half of the winnings.
Thank you to the local community that came out and participated to make all
the events that much more enjoyable and memorable.
We look forward to seeing every one for our Nation’s 150th Anniversary. We
are already planning an even bigger and more memorable celebration with
adult and children’s activities, bicycle parade, street hockey and fireworks.
