N
oble Kurt L. Frevel Sr. was born in Baltimore
on May 27, 1963. Kurt and his wife Beth have
been married since Sept. 3, 1988, and have two
sons, Kurt Jr. and Robert, one daughter, Michelle,
and two grandchildren.
Kurt began his Masonic affiliation as a member
of Tuscan Chapter DeMolay where he is a past
master counselor, and he joined Concordia
Lodge #13 in Towson in 1984. In 1986, he became
a Scottish Rite Mason; and in 2001, he became a
member of Tall Cedars.
After becoming a member of Boumi Shrine on
June 7, 1986, Kurt joined several clubs and units,
including the Ambassadors, Camel Wheels,
Clowns, Arab Patrol, and the Ocean City Shrine
Club. He was appointed to the Divan as First
Ceremonial Master in 2011.
Kurt started working at Atlantic Caterers when
he was 13 years old and, in 2000, he became
president of the company.
Kurt is a founding member of the Oyster
Recovery Partnership for the State of Maryland.
In 2010, he received the Vernon P. Johnson
Exceptional Environmental Stewardship Award.
A board member for the Shriners Hospitals
for Children in Philadelphia, he also sat on the
board of directors of the Baltimore Museum
of Industry for eight years. Also, Kurt is an
honorary member of the Fraternal Order of
Police Lodge #4.
ES-SELAMU ALEIKUM . . .
GREETINGS TO ALL NOBLES AND LADIES OF BOUMI TEMPLE,
I
am honored to have been elected
Potentate of Boumi for the upcoming
year. Beth and I are excited to work
with all of the members of Boumi to
insure a successful 2016.
I would like to thank the rest of the
Divan for their support as I progressed
through the line. I owe a special
thanks to Mark and Kathy Hartz for a
wonderful Potentate’s Reception.
I look forward to working with
Ernie Palmer in the hopes of receiving
invitations to the Maryland Blue Lodges
to discuss membership opportunities
and the amazing work done at the
Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The Potentate’s Inaugural Dinner
will be held on March 5 with
entertainment provided by the “Mood
Swings” big band. Beth and I hope to
see you all there—it will be a fabulous
celebration.
I was honored to be named a Board
Member at the Shriners Hospital
for Children in Philadelphia, and I
would like to thank Past Potentate Jim
Davis for his nine years of service and
dedication to the Hospital.
Finally, I owe a special debt of
gratitude to Past Potentate Charles
Johnston for appointing me as his First
Ceremonial Master, thereby beginning
my journey to Potentate of Boumi.
I look forward to a successful year
with many outstanding events and
trips that will be featured in upcoming
issues of the Boumi News. With your
support, we will all be “Standing Tall
for our Children.”
Yours in faith,
Kurt L. Frevel Sr.

From the Desk of the
RECORDER
Here we go, the beginning of another
year!! We have just elected and
installed our new Potentate Kurt L.
Frevel Sr. and he has hit the ground
running. What a year the Potentate
and his Divan have planned. We will
have events for every budget, some
new events, some old favorites, and
many of our traditional events.
In January, the Potentate held a trip
and convention presentation for those
who are interested. He will have two
cruises: a cruise of the Alaskan Coast
and a Cruise of the Southern Caribbean,
both of which are at good prices. The
Imperial Convention will be held in
Tampa, Fla. Fill out the paperwork
for the trip as it appears on page 13 of
the Boumi News. The Potentate plans
on having as many nobles as possible
involved in all of the events.
We need to think about membership
and our new Potentate has done
just that—he has appointed Ernie
Palmer, High Priest and Prophet, as
membership chairman. The committee
is putting some bold plans together to
keep up the momentum that we started
in 2015. We must remember: it cannot
be done without your help. You are the
missing part of the plan, for without
you, it will not work. Let’s all get on
the Boumi bandwagon and make 2016
the year we turn things around and

On a personal note, I want to thank

Congratulations to the Divan and the officers of the units
and clubs on being installed in their offices. We need to
support the clubs and units of Boumi
Shrine. All of the clubs and units are looking for new
members, and the Photo Staff needs members too.
Our business meetings are held the second Wednesday
of the month, and our work meetings are the fourth
Wednesday of the month. Our meetings are held in the first
Unit Room on the left coming from the rear parking lot.
We would like to see you at our meetings—new members
welcome. If you have an interest in photography, Photo
Lab, or Photoshop, we need you. Contact John Friskey at
[email protected].
Patrolmen, Nobles, Ladies and Friends,
The Patrol is strong. We are working on something to
help our members who can no longer march so that they
can join us in parades. If it has been a while since you have
been to a parade, please join us at our next meeting.
The Owls are looking for you! If you are a patrolman’s
lady or widow, please get in touch and we will let you know
when the next Owls meeting will be held. The Patrol is
family.
We would like to invite our new nobles and all Masons
to come by on the second Monday of the month at 7 p.m.
for fellowship and refreshments. Remember your Blue
Lodges. Reach out and let your Brothers know what Shrine
Masonry is all about.
For more information, contact Noble Mike Nelson at

up on Facebook (search “Boumi Arab-Patrol”). We are the

Knights of Mecca
Colonel’s Staff
In the last Knights of Mecca article I
wrote the following paragraph: “So
before the frost is upon us I hope
everyone had a safe and enjoyable
summer. And as we move rapidly
through the year we all now start
thinking about the upcoming holidays.”
So let me say again, before the frost
is upon us…amazing as I write this
it is seven days before Christmas and
we are dressing like it’s spring. It is our
hope that everyone had a wonderful
Christmas and has entered 2016 with
good health.
At the time of this publication the
2016 Knights of Mecca officers have
been elected and installed. They are as
follows: President Art Dickerson, 1st
Vice President Bob Chase, and 2nd
Vice President Jim Hill. I wish the new
officers the best in the next year.
I would like to thank those who have
allowed the Knights of Mecca to raise
over 200 Masons to the sublime degree
of Master Mason. The Knights of
Mecca continue to encourage all lodges
that have Master Mason 3rd degree
conferrals coming up and would like to
have us visit and lend a helping hand,

2016 is in full swing and Boumi has
already been active with a number
of events and functions. Our new
Potentate, Kurt L. Frevel Sr., was
installed along with his Divan. So
to him and the rest of the Divan,
congratulations and thank you for your
commitment to Boumi. Expectations
are high that this will be one of our best
years ever and your guidance is much
appreciated by everyone.
In January, we had the Clubs and
Unit Heads Installation. Things were
a little different this year and I hope
you found them to your liking. The
Colonel’s Staff is open to any feedback
to help make next year even better, so
please feel free to share your thoughts.
As your colonel for 2016, I want to
say thank you to everyone who came
out in support of Boumi in these early
months and especially to those club
presidents and unit leaders who are
making the extra effort to participate
in a leadership role. Our goal this year
is to put more feet on the street so that
our community knows who we are
and that we are “Standing Tall for our
Children.”
I will be getting information to unit
and club leaders on the upcoming
parades, and it won’t be long until we
head south to Tampa for the Imperial
Session in July. It would be so rewarding
to have Boumi well represented
amongst our peers in Tampa. I hope
you can join us.
The office of the Colonel’s Staff is
open, so all so feel free to stop by and
visit. Let us know how we can help get
your unit or club on the street in 2016.

Howdy Cuzzins,
Important Note: All Hillbilly
meetings have been moved to the
third Tuesday of the month instead of
the second Tuesday. Our next meeting
will be on March 15. The meetings for
the rest of 2016 are May 17, July 19,
Sept. 20, and Nov. 15.
Good news: Now you can leave the
tabs on your cans when you put them
in one of our eleven collection barrels
placed throughout the Shrine. If you
have loose tabs, please put them in the
cans too.
Thanks to Vernon Young and Jim
Frederick who collect, crush, and
deliver the cans and tabs to the recycler
at their own expense. All proceeds
go to the Shriners Hospitals for
Children. Please continue to support
the Hillbillies in this fundraising effort.
So far this activity has raised almost
$1,500 for the Philadelphia Hospital.
Hope to see all you guys and gals
at the March 15th meeting. Support
Boumi and your Blue Lodge.

Provost Guard
Commander Robert Creech
New Commander Robert Creech has
a great year planned for 2016. Please
come out and give him the support
he deserves. The installation of the
Provost officers in January was a great
party—the food was super and the
camaraderie was excellent, as usual.
If you missed this one, you should be
ashamed.
Dues notices for 2016 were mailed
in January. The dues will remain the
same—no increase. If you are one
of the few who haven’t yet paid your
2015 dues, please do so now. Be sure to
update your roster information. Thank
you.
We continue to meet on the second
Thursday of the month in our unit
room starting at 7:30 p.m. We have
refreshments after every meeting.
Attend a meeting and enjoy the
friendship of the great nobles who are
members of the Provost. This is truly
an excellent unit. Hope to see you
there.

Congratulation to the Divan and
the officers of the units and clubs on
being installed in their offices. We
need to support the clubs and units of
Boumi Shrine. All the clubs and units
are looking for new members, and
Catonsville Shrine Club needs new
members too.
Most of our meetings are held at Chef
Paolino Cafe—they sponsor Boumi in
the Catonsville July 4th Parade every
year. Our other meetings are held at
Charlestown in Catonsville and Toby’s
Dinner Theater in Columbia. We
would like to see you at our meetings.

Our December meeting was held at
the Princess Anne American Legion.
Good food and a good time was had
by all. Thanks to host Lee Hurley who
always does a fine job. This meeting is a
memorial to Frank Widic, past president
and dedicated Shriner. In January we
had our installation of officers at Adams
Grille (hosts Phil Stephenson and Spike
Simpkins). Feb. 17 is in Cambridge,
Md. (host Wallace Dodson). March
16 is our joint Md./Del./Va. meeting
at Bridgeville, Del. firehouse (hosts
Preston Rogers and M.C. Dick Feeser).
I hope everyone had a Merry
Christmas and is looking forward to a
happy and prosperous new year.
Another year has gone by and how
lucky we have been with the weather.
Let’s hope it continues a little longer,
but we all know there is bound to be
snow in our near future. Our Christmas
party was held December and I hope
everyone had a great time. Thank you
to all of the ladies who brought desserts
and other treats. Happy New Years to
everyone, and I hope to see you in
February.
One final note: if you had a chance
to see how beautiful the Shrine looked
this Christmas, remember that the
Boumi Ladies shared in the decorating.

or spend time at the spectacular Florida Aquarium.
To explore even further, hop aboard a unique,

Ambassadors
Captain Bob Candler
Chief Ambassador Jack A. Comer
The New Year is underway now so we’re getting down to
business as usual. Let’s all work together not to just have
a good year but a great one. The weather was great for the
parades in White Marsh and Aberdeen and also for the
Mayor’s parade the next day. We had a pretty nice turnout
for them. Our captain thanks all those who participated. We
did have a really nice Christmas party to close out the year.
January brought a lot of nobles and their ladies together
for the units and clubs installation and dance party. That
evening is always enjoyable for everyone attending. A big
event coming up is the Potentate’s Inaugural, and we expect
some of our group to be there. This is one of the best parties
at Boumi and anyone who hasn’t been to that should go and
get the experience.
We would like to thank Past Captain Don Hurcombe
for his leadership and dedication to our unit last year. Also
we want to tell William Needer, our divan representative,
how much we appreciated his attendance all year; that also
goes to Steve Glushakow, our colonel’s representative. It is
important to have those nobles at our meetings.
Note of interest: You already know Bob Candler is a past
master and he sits in a chair in the Grand Lodge, but he is
also proud to let us know that his wife, Chris, is the Grand
Guide for Miss Maryland Congeniality for Job’s Daughters,
and his daughter Becca is Miss Maryland Job’s Daughter.
Our Motor Corps will be represented at the Timonium
Motorcycle Show at the Fairgrounds once again this month.
They have done this for many years and it’s a good way to
let the public know about the Shrine. Stop by and say hello.
About once a year we try to stir up a membership drive.
Remind every noble that if, during the entire time he is a
member of Boumi, he would get JUST ONE new member,
our membership would never decline. In a perfect world
this would work, so let’s try to do that. In closing, we remind
all nobles to attend Boumi Business Meetings. See you there!
Spencer Wilson
Greetings to all Ambassadors,
Congratulations to our newly elected and installed
Potentate, Illustrious Sir Kurt L. Frevel Sr., and his 2016
Divan. We wish you and all of the nobles of Boumi a happy
and successful year of 2016. We also want to congratulate
our new Chief Ambassador for 2016 Jack A. Comer and wish
for him, his board, and the entire Ambassador membership
a year of great fellowship, interesting programs, and many
successes in the coming year.
We also want to congratulate and thank our 2015 Chief
Ambassador, Edward A. DeWaters III, and his board for the
wonderful year our club experienced under their committed
leadership. Our monthly meetings and programs, with many
top-notch speakers, were all very interesting and worthwhile
as was evidenced by larger than usual attendances. Also,
thanks again to Past Chief Bill Mezoff—we had another
outstanding crab feast with a huge attendance of over 500.
Due to the wonderful and profitable crab feast and the
Ambassadors’ sales of our Sportsman’s Raffle tickets, we can
proudly say that we were able to contribute $1,200 to the new
Christmas decorations in the ballroom and also contributed
to the Boumi Tailgate Party in January.
Reminder to all current Ambassadors: plan on
attending our next regular meeting on Feb. 4. Likewise,
our Ambassadors are always looking for nobles who are
supportive of Boumi’s activities and are active in other
units and clubs. We always look forward to accepting new
appointments to our club. We need all of your support for
upcoming Shrine and club activities.
Best of everything throughout this coming year to all,
Richard G. “Dick” Feeser

Gun Club
President Charles Leight
At our December meeting we were fortunate to have an
unusually balmy day. The shooting was spirited and we had
a good turnout. The officers were elected for 2016: President
Charles Leight, 1st Vice President Phil Nicholson, 2nd Vice
President John Siegel, Secretary Dan Powell, and Treasurer Jim
Sebra. We are looking forward to a fun year with some special
events, starting with a Valentine’s Day shoot in February.
We took in three new members and perhaps there are
some “eagle eyes” in the group that will be ready for the
famous Tri-Temple event in August.
We invite guests, both Masons and others, to come out
on the second Saturday of the month to enjoy a unique
fellowship along with the challenge of breaking those elusive
clay targets. We meet at the Carney Rod and Gun Club on
Hilltop Drive in Carney at 9 a.m. Hope to see you at the club.

The new Boumi Model Railroad Club is now in full swing.
The model train platform we had up between Thanksgiving
and New Year’s Day was a great success. The children
(and adults) at the Clowns’ Christmas Party enjoyed the
display. The children enjoyed playing with the “Thomas
and Friends” trains we had set up for them. Many of the
adults stated that this is one of the greatest things for the
children the Shrine ever had and hope that it will be on
display again.
Many thanks go out to nobles Ron Burdynski, John Fink,
Leonard Elliott, and Bill Skinner, as well as visitor Robert
Hess for their help in the construction and display setup
and for their time showing and running the trains for the
visitors.
The club wants to give a special thank you to Noble
Stanley Kriel Jr. for his contribution of the trains, displays,
and many other items (some of which go back to the ‘40s
and ‘50s).
In 2016 we are hoping to have a larger display for
everyone. If you are interested in joining the BMRC, please
contact Noble Ron Burdynski at 443-882-5178. You don’t
need to have trains, you just need to enjoy them.
All of the members of Zitta Temple #27 hope everyone had
a very happy holiday season, and we wish all a very happy
and healthy new year.
We had a great December session and added a new
“Queen”—Princess Jean Querfurth was crowned our Cookie
Queen for her “Peppermint Forgotten Cookies.” Our annual
cookie exchange has now produced three queens and lots of
delicious cookies to be enjoyed by all.
Our second ceremonial was held at our January session
and we were happy to welcome several new princesses.
Everyone was invited to join us for refreshments before the
session, which was an excellent meet and greet opportunity.
The memorial service for those members who are no
longer with us will be held at our February session on the
16th. Please join us in honoring their memory.
Before our upcoming March session on the 15th, we will
again be hosting our annual pasta dinner, which is prepared
by our own Past Queen Laura Bell. Each and every member
is invited and we hope you will bring your family and
friends to make this fundraiser a success. You don’t have to
be a Daughter of the Nile to come. For more information,
please contact Past Queen Laura Bell at 443-226-4953 or
Past Queen Joan Mezoff at 410-661-4367. Come and join
us as we enjoy socializing with friends and partake of an
excellent meal and delicious desserts. Our session will begin
after the dinner.
It seems like only yesterday that I was installed as Queen
of Zitta Temple #27, Daughters of the Nile, but it is already
time for me to say goodbye and for us to welcome a new
queen for 2016-2017. The installation of Pr. Kathleen Palmer
will be on March 20 at 2 p.m. at Boumi Shrine. I invite
everyone to join us—you do not have to be a member—to
honor Kathleen on that day.

Here I go again. I’m either in the past
or the future because of the lead time
required. It’s five days before Christmas
as I write this so I can wish you Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year and
hope you had a Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year simultaneously. Our
annual Christmas party provided a
rare opportunity for band members
and wives to socialize. John White
earned our thanks for handling all of
the party details. Atlantic Caterers
provided the food, and the raw oysters
were exceptional.
Touch of Class had a very successful
2015. With several events already
scheduled, we are anticipating 2016
to be another successful year. Officers
for 2016 have been elected and will
be installed in February. In addition
to the business meetings, we played at
several Shriners events, including the
Unit Head’s Installation, the Hospital
Day Picnic, the Carnival, the MASA
convention, and the Scimeter Club’s
Christmas Ball.
The weather cooperated this year
and Touch of Class ended 2015 playing
the Mayor’s and the White Marsh
Christmas parades. Band members
enjoyed some great seasonal fellowship
at the Tilted Kilt following the White
Marsh parade. The Clown’s Christmas
Party was an especially fitting start for
the holidays. Thanks to the Clowns we
began with coffee and donuts that got
us started and ended with hot dogs
for lunch. Watching the kids having
fun was a joy and we appreciated the
number of thanks we heard from those
attending.
I know there are guys out there who
play musical instruments. Don’t be a
Scrooge. Bring your instrument and
join in the fun. Try it—you’ll love it.

Bou-Tem-Sci
President Linda D. Barnes
President Karl Ballwanz
The Auto and Cigar clubs finished
the year on several good notes. Both
clubs met in late October at Boumi
Shrine’s outdoor pavilion for burgers
and dogs on the grill, for good cigars
to smoke, to show off their cars, but
most of all, to have some great fun
and camaraderie with brother nobles,
family and friends.
The Auto Club was very proud to
drive their vehicles in the White Marsh
Parade and represent the Potentate, the
Divan, and the general membership of
Boumi Shrine.
Plans are underway to provide
assistance to newly elected Potentate
Kurt Frevel and the 2016 Divan. The
Auto Club will be driving to Ocean
City Maryland for the St. Patrick’s Day
Parade on Mar. 12.
If you are interested in the Auto
Club or the Cigar Club, contact Karl
Ballwanz at 443-324-5507, Mark Hartz
at 410-991-3496, or Ernie Palmer at
301-343-4710.
We wish all of the elected officers of
the Divan and the Financial Advisors
a most successful year. May they guide
the membership throughout 2016 to
many achievements. Don’t forget our
main purpose: to support our Shriners
Hospitals for Children who care for the
children with disabilities and burns.
I hope that 2016 has started well for
you. The new year looks promising
with wonderful entertainment lined up
for our monthly luncheon meetings,
as well as a June outing and our only
fundraiser, our 88th fashion show
and luncheon in October. First VicePresident Sandi Phillips is doing
a fantastic job getting different
entertainment for each meeting.
We look forward to the Feb. 15
meeting when the nobles join us for our
luncheon. It is always a great pleasure
to honor the nobles for the great work
they do. I look forward to seeing many
nobles on this special day.
I know 2015 was an exciting year
for Past Potentate William Raymond
Bosley Jr. and his Lady Anita. I am sure
the year went all too quickly for them.
Congratulations to the new Potentate,
Illustrious Kurt L. Frevel Sr. and his
Lady Beth. I know they will have a
wonderful and enjoyable year.
If you made any resolutions for 2016,
I do hope one is to attend and support
your Bou-Tem-Sci Club. We meet the
third Monday at Columbus Gardens
beginning with a social hour at 11
a.m., followed by a delicious lunch,
entertainment and a short meeting.
It is a lovely afternoon spending time
with your many friends. I look forward
to seeing you.

100 Million Dollar Club
Noble James G. Cullison
Chairman
E
ach month I come to you with a request for $100 for the
100 Million Dollar Club. This is one of the few “clubs”
that I know of where no other dues are required; once you
make the initial contribution of $100, you are a member
for life. However, there are many nobles and friends who
make annual and more frequent donations.
This month we want to sincerely thank Illustrious Wm.
Ray Bosley Jr. for a very successful year, and we want to
warmly welcome the Potentate for 2016, the Illustrious Sir
Kurt L. Frevel Sr. As we start 2016 with a new Potentate, we
realize the many challenges and decisions he will need to
overcome and make; we pledge our help and assistance in
making this year another successful one in the history of
Boumi Shrine. You, too, will need to make many important
decisions this year. One of the most important is to make
a donation to the 100 Million Dollar Club. Let’s support
the Illustrious Sir and help keep the Shriners Hospitals for
Children strong by contributing with a generous donation
today.
When children need medical care, only the BEST will
do. For more than 94 years, our Shriners Hospitals have
provided state-of-the-art medical attention. We must, as
Shriners concerned about the future of our Shrine children,
do all we can to continue the work of our hospitals for
decades to come. The future of the Shriners Hospitals for
Children is dependent on this 100 Million Dollar Fund
and your donations. Please make your contribution now
and as often as you can.

In Memoriam
“There was a friend whose heart was good. He walked with men and understood. His was
a voice that spoke to cheer, and felt like music on the ear. His was a smile men loved to see.
His was a hand that asked no fee for friendliness or kindness done. And now that he has
journeyed on, his is a fame that never ends—He leaves behind countless friends.”
