The President’s Spin
Spring is finally here… More or less. Most of you should be getting out on
the club rides. The first official weekday of the season begins on Tuesday,
April 7th at Oley High School. The rides start at 6pm sharp so please be
there and signed in by 5:55 so ride hosts can be ready to start on time.

Potholes, gravel and potholes. We have all seen and hit many of them in
our cars. You know how they feel in a 2000lb car so imagine what it will be
like on a bike. I honestly don’t remember seeing so many and such deep
holes like this year. Right now more than ever, look out for your fellow riders
and call our out the potholes. The group depends on the riders at the front
and then for ALL riders to keep passing the word back through the ranks.
Along with the riding season comes the increased interaction/ conflict/
clashes between riders and cars. Please check out a message from an
Oley Township contact, given to the club and local riders posted in this
newsletter on page 4. As always, be aware of cars approaching behind you
and do your best not to impede their progress.
By now most of you have heard about a professional bike race coming to
Reading / Berks County on Saturday, September 12th called the Reading
120. We have told the organizers that our bike club would like to be part of
the race. After discussing thoughts with Matt Farrell, he came up with
several course options for the organizers to evaluate. They will also be
looking for BCBC to have our members marshall sections of a 70 mile
course that will go through the countryside before it finishes up with six – 9
mile loops in Reading before the finish.
Another cool event that took a lot of planning was our yearly club banquet /
party that took place on Saturday, March 21st in Oley. We had quite a bunch
of new people attend this year with the total number being around 94
people. Those who came out were greeted with two tables full of random
prizes from the local bike shops whose ads can be found in our newsletter.
At each seat was the new BCBC car magnets for all members.

If you didn’t make it to the party, check with club officers as we will be getting them out to all
members who would like one. Walt Hug put on an awesome slide show with lots of new photos and
our recently departed member Byron Lape was remembered.
There was an abundance of food, and an even bigger selection of desserts from a table of apple,
cherry and blueberry pies to another tables loaded with Sweet Street desserts. Most of us ate over a
thousand calories in just desserts so thank goodness we’re not a knitting club. We also had 5 kinds
of beer to choose from and more wine than the connoisseur could drink.
Members were recognized for their time and efforts made to the club, Dave Cruzan and Deb Miller
were announced as riding the most club miles for 2014. Kate Hug was rightfully selected for this
year’s Presidents Award for her great attitude towards fellow riders and dedication to the club.
Lastly, getting dancers out on the floor was more of a challenge than riding some of the biggest hills
in Berks, on a tricycle. But within an hour, the dance floor was bopping and remained full, the rest of
the night. Even the goofy line dances were a hit, except for the Chicken Dance that was requested.
It was an absolute loser that won’t EVER be played at a BCBC party again.
So if you missed out on the party, no problem, just keep Saturday, June 20th open so you can attend
the club picnic at Laurel Run Park in Hyde Park.
We are in the process of planning a club day in the Poconos zip lining and a high ropes course for
either August or September. If you have an idea for a club event or activity, please let one of the
club officers know or bring it up at a club meeting.
Remember to check our Berks County Bicycle Club group Facebook page for ride updates and
things happening with the club. If you’re not yet listed as a member of the club Facebook page,
simply go to the page and click on the “join” request.
Our next club meeting is coming up on Monday, April 13th at the Exeter Restaurant on Rte 422.
Meeting starts at 7PM and will last maybe an hour. We will be discussing the picnic, Shoo Fly Ride
and additional club functions for the summer. Again, if you have any ideas or thoughts for the club,
please come out to the meeting, or drop Phyl Geist or myself an email so we can bring it up.
Be sure to check the ride schedule because starting in April, we’ll be adding one trail ride one
Wednesday evening per month.
Please send in your membership forms to Kate or you can register online.
Safe riding,
Butch Ulrich

Oley – Warning to Cyclists
It’s never a good thing to hear that an entire township is pretty much fed up with cyclists riding in
their community. But that was a stern message that was passed on to us by someone who is heavily
involved in Oley Township. Essentially, they have had enough of the 3 a breast riding on Main St in
Oley and surrounding roads. They’re tired of having riders taking up the entire lane or in the
oncoming lane when cars are coming up on them. We were told by a person who enjoys bike riding
himself, to relay this message to all riders.
To that end, Oley Twp has now come up with a form that applicants now fill out in order to hold any
type of cycling event in Oley. This form then is sent to the board for approval. Just recently, they
denied a group representing a USCF Race that had been previously held in Oley. They wanted
nothing to do with a USCF Race that had been approved in previous years. This is not a good sign.
Because regardless of whether you think we have equal rights to the roads or have the attitude that
“There are always going to be cars behind us, so I’m not getting over”, Oley is moving forward in
making it not quite as easy to just freely ride in the twp. For those of you who think Oley is a great
place to ride, please start to really think about that the next time you hear or see a car and are
debating whether to get away from the yellow line or middle of the road. And if you still don’t care,
then you should probably start thinking about alternative “great places” to ride in the county because
from what I was told, it will only take a slight change in the decision making balance in the township
and that will be the end of group riding in Oley. And if you think a Twp can’t control the roads like
that, just know that years ago, Fleetwood decided they had enough of one particular group and
banned them from passing through the town.
If this message offends or has you rolling your eyes saying, “Whatever”, odds are, you might be part
of the problem. So please be part of the solution not the problem and remind others to ride wisely.

Seasoned Spokes outings are group rides of roughly 20 miles and take about 2 hours to complete.
Some of the rides have a pre-post ride option that adds an extra 10 to 20 miles. These pre-post ride
options are announced by email each week. Rides are rated 1, 2 or 3 with 3 being the hilliest and
most difficult. Lunches are scheduled after some of the rides during the warmer months. Many of the
riders are over 55, however anyone is welcome to participate. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before the
start time with a bicycle in good condition, a bicycle helmet and anything you need to repair a flat tire.

sure you have a spare tube or patch kit and at least one water bottle.
If weather conditions are questionable, the ride host may notify club members by posting a message on Facebook prior
to the ride or make a decision at the starting location based on road conditions and weather forecasted at the time of the
ride.
SPECIAL RIDE DETAILS
Special rides during the months will be highlighted in color. If you are hosting a special ride, please contact Newsletter
Editor Wendy Davis or Ride Coordinator Alan Fineman before the 18th of each month to tell other club members about it. Did
you have a great experience on a ride? Let us know and we’ll add pictures and stories about your ride!

Rambling Rides
1. These group rides are for riders
looking for longer distance riding.
2. Rides start around 40-50 miles in
spring, and ramp up to 60+ miles during
the summer and fall.
3. Rides are currently scheduled for 1 ride per weekend
and are posted in the BCBC newsletter with the other rides.
4. Although no one will be left behind on these rides, it is
important that riders have the ability to do
longer rides (no sag wagon support).

RIDE SHEET WAIVERS
Starting in 2015 Scott Franzen will be
keeping track of the club miles. If you
are ride host please give the sheets to
Scott.
If the ride is canceled please let Scott
know so he’s not looking for rides
sheets for that day. Email him at
[email protected]
MESSAGE FROM MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR
All members will receive the newsletter via email from [email protected]. The
emailed newsletter is usually sent by the 25rd of each month. If they DO NOT receive it, they should
check spam, then confirm their email address by emailing me at [email protected]. Likewise, if
someone thinks they paid dues, they should confirm with me. New ride waivers come out the first of
each month. If a ride host does not have a name listed on the waiver, check the top date to see if
they used the most current listing.

Tires & Tubes for 2015
The club has again placed a bulk order of Continental tires and tubes for the upcoming
season. Due to the fickle and at times indecisive nature of our club it’s difficult to predict
what to order. One year Gatorskins were too expensive for people’s taste, the next year
everybody wanted Gatorskins. Unfortunately to get the best price the decision had to be
made quickly and we need to order from only one manufacturer. There was no time to
poll the club, not that I would have expected a consensus on one brand. Due to placing
a volume order and a subsidy from the Racing Division the price of tires and tubes will be roughly 60% of MSRP. This
year’s offerings will be:
Continental Gatorskins 700 x 25mm - $35.00
Continental Grandsport 700 x25mm - $25.00
Tubes - $4.00 each or 4 for $15.00
The Gatorskins and tubes are available now, and the Grandsports should be
available by mid-January. Please contact me if you wish to reserve any of the
above. You can make arrangements to pick them up or plan to get them at the
banquet. To give all club members an opportunity we are limiting distribution to 2
tires and 4 tubes per person until the banquet. At that time you may purchase as
many as we have remaining.

BCBC GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES
Held at the Crossroads Diner on March 9, 2015
Officers, Coordinators, and Members in Attendance: Butch U, Phyl G, Jackie S, Bill S, Jeff N, Greg K, Marc P, Wendy D, Rick D,
Thurm K, Alan F, Scott F, Chip C, Marge E, Karen M, Kate H, Walt H, Dave C, and Dan L.
Wednesday Night Trail Rides: A suggestion was made to formally invite the Flying Dutchman Ski Club members to the Wednesday
night Trail Rides.
Social Stay Together Rides: There is a possibility that Dave Linkchorst will be able to host a SST ride bringing the total SST rides
up to 2 each month. This should be confirmed by the next meeting.
GPS Links: Ride with GPS Links for all rides will soon be available on the website.
1000 mile recognition: Chip C. suggested a possibility of recognizing club members for every 1000 miles they ride. There were no
decisions made. There will continue to be discussion on this idea by the officers.
Tour de France: The suggestion was made again to have 21 rides scheduled during the Tour de France with the person riding the
most miles receiving a Yellow Jersey. More planning will take place before July.
Social Activities: There are plans in place to have more social activities for the club members. Detail to follow in future newsletters.
Tailgating: We would like to try this again after Weekend rides. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Alan F. so it can be
but in the ride schedule.
Next Meeting: The next meeting will be on Monday, April 13th at the Exeter Family Restaurant at 7:00 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Jackie Schultz-Shirey, Secretary

It's a beautiful day in Pennsylvania!
The current issue of the Bicycle Access Council News & Digest, a regular
communication with members and supporters, is now posted directly at:
http://tinyurl.com/lf8jaqn or
http://bicycleaccess-pa.org/newsite/News%20&%20Digest%20-%20November%202014.pdf
It's in PDF format on the BAC website: www.BicycleAccess-PA.org You may also request a hard copy mailed to you.
Past issues that started in January 2005 are viewable there too.
Over the years, many have continued their support by renewing memberships and recruiting others to join. BAC
appreciates every membership and donation for the only state-wide advocacy organization dedicated solely to on-theroad cyclists. Thank You. Please do not Reply-All to this message.

great bicycling miles. On May 30, Tour de Lebanon
Valley offers a Metric Century and a 25 mile ride. This
is a fundraiser event for Lebanon Valley Volunteers in
Medicine Free Health Clinic and Lebanon Valley
Bicycle Coalition. The ride starts from the Health
Clinic in the City of Lebanon, a few blocks from the
downtown Farmers Market and Snitz Creek Brewery.
There is a Family Ride on the Lebanon Valley Rail
Trail. Ride descriptions, other information, and
registration are at www.tourdelebanonvalley.org. For
more information contact Linda Jackson at 717 2722252 or [email protected]. Come for the week end
and bike the Century Perimeter with 6000 feet of climb
or take it easy and experience one of the rail trails or
the scenic bike rides available at
