Move over men, it’s
a Woman’s World
“It’s remarkable what a woman can
accomplish with just a little ambition.”
Elizabeth Arden
Women should be celebrated all the
time, EVERYTIME. There is a lot
we have to put with, there is a lot
required of us - mentally, spiritually,
emotionally, physically.
Back in 1966, the godfather of soul,
James Brown blared out, “It’s a Man’s
Man’s Man’s World”. We are now in
the 21st century, 2015 and I believe
it’s become a woman’s world. I
recently read in Forbes Africa Woman that African Union at its 24th summit
in Addis Ababa declared this year as the year of women’s empowerment and I couldn’t agree
more. To bring this home, we looked to Nigeria’s entertainment powerhouse, someone we had
covered in 2010, the awesome Dakore Egbuson-Akande.
Where do I start from with Dakore Egbuson-Akande? I found a new friend in this lady is all I can say. She
is the most amiable person ever. She’s an editor’s
dream – willing to go to great lengths to ensure the
best images are taken. I am so excited about this
issue – so many great images of this talented woman
wearing some of Nigeria’s finest in the fashion
industry (Lisa Folawiyo, Ituen Basi, Mai Atafo and
Tiffany Amber) – I’ll tell you it was a struggle
to pick the best for her six page story but we’ve
created something amazing in order to share our
favourite camera moments with her. The super

To match our darling Dakore, we looked to a gentleman with an equally stable career line with
equal amount of poise - THE COOLEST DJ JIMMY JATT, and WOW what a genuinely nice
guy. We needed to take him out of his comfort zone of suits whilst still keeping his trademark
glasses and hats. Jimmy Jatt has been around for two decades and a half in the entertainment
business and he is still standing strong, unwavering with his art. He solely laid the ground work
for making the art of DJing a successful career choice in a continent where it’s believed you can’t
be successful if you’re not a doctor, lawyer,
accountant, etc. To many who have followed
in his steps, he is a LEGEND in his field. We
celebrate the man as he shares with us how he
has been able to keep his marriage considering
his career choice and raise two fantastic young
women, his future plans – can he still spin the
deck for us for another two decades may be?
Find out in For the Love of Jimmy Jatt (see
page 44).
We’ve PACKED this issue with the latest
trends – for women its SHIRTDRESSES and
CAPES (inspired by superheroes specifically

men (page 41). Do you have a styling dilemma with an
item in your wardrobe were you’re not sure how else to
wear it again and again? Look out for One Piece Four
Ways, where we style a Floral Full Skirt (page 14) for the
ladies and Denim shirt (page 15) for the guys. I doubt
there is no one who doesn’t love Red carpet events –
seeing celebrities and likes dressed up – check out 8 pages
of the AWARDS SEASON’s BEST DRESSED (men,
women & couples) from the major international events
and of course, Nigeria’s own AMVCAs (from page 50).
Looking for the best totes/shopper bags to carry – from
budget-friendly to splurge worthy, we’ve got one to suit
every pocket (page 16). Trousers are BACK this season,
we’ve done a selection of the season’s trending cuts and
colours (page 20). Another great feature in this issue, the
original street-style, MUST-SEE ASEOEBI takes 3 pages.

as this issue’s cover talent – a first. A man popular among
the ladies with his brushes, the talented Nigerian makeup artist, Dave Sucre. Beauty Box also addresses the issue
of grooming, sharing FOUR steps to looking great to a

- no more excuses men. Ladies, you’re not left out, check

Here’s why we love the cape: Its billowing sweep, the duel-ready look it gives, the
sporty yet tailored feel it exudes and while some feature slits- that give way for your
arms- it’s a fun way to express your style.
Here’s how to wear it: Pair naturally with skinny pants and avoid experimenting with
colours, keep the colour code as neutral as possible. Pair with a tote.

With a huge nod to dresses, Spring/Summer
2015 boasts of so many quirky styles - one
being the delightfully sexy ShirtDress.
Shirtdresses are a brilliant alternative to
regular dresses – with features like drop
waists, double high slits, asymmetric
hemlines, mandarin-collars and many more
– there is plenty to choose from to suit any
occasion. Remain a step ahead with this
mix & match approach to volume and fabric
as shirts take center stage with designers
experimenting patchworks of vintage
alongside nautical accents to creating the
perfect shirtdress. Take a cue from some of

Dakore
The Effortlessly Stunning
Egbuson-Akande
Words by Adaeze Ibechukwu | Photography Moussa Moussa | Styling Antonia Soares and Moses Ebite for MoashyStyling |
Jellewery Cephas Jewelers | Make-up Juliet and Ego for blackUP Paris (Montaigne Place) | Hair Zubby Eneoma| Location Poosh Boutique
Chic by nature and steadily fashioning an enviable life for herself, Dakore Egbuson-Akande juggles motherhood, an acting career and a remarkable yet playful
personality combined with an ability to maintain a private life. With a stunning figure duly attributed to exercise - it’s no surprise that the mother of two has
been off and on different forms of yoga for the past ten years - plus a recent fitness video with Kayode Fahm and Zainab Balogun, she has somewhat re-defined
identity and visibility for so many women. Taking center stage as always, by appearing for the second time on the CF cover, the Pampers and Cow & Gate brand
ambassador, whose thoroughly on-point red-carpet fashion has made her a recurrent buzz on social media, talks to us about practically everything. We call her
our ‘Ideal gal’, you call her, Dakore Egbuson-Akande.
She Devil! That movie made news and it’s protagonist made
headlines. Dakore who, at that time, wore dreads, slipped into
our silver screens and caught us totally unawares. Her acting was
and still is, flawless.
The decision to have her grace our cover for the second time
was unanimous; everyone just loves Dakore, and we were
excited about her re-entrance into the acting world after a short
break. Do we see her delving into movie production? “Directing,
definitely directing…” she says. A path she knows that she’ll
greatly excel in.
The CompleteFashion photoshoot held at the Poosh Boutique
in VI, a plush setting for the finest clothes and serene ambience. Dakore settled in nicely and quickly as she tried on all the
looks for the shoot, with the help of the editor, Antonia Soares.
In no time, the effortless hands of Ego and Juliet for blackUp
(Montaigne place) performed their magic and Dakore was ready
for her shoot.
Vibrant, beautiful, playful, delightful, and charming to say
the least, Dakore caught us up in the euphoria of her moment. There are no words to describe the wife and mother of two
adorable princesses as her jovial nature gradually enveloped us
and before we knew it, we were all laughing and conversing like
old friends.
With all these said, I couldn’t wait to chat…
CF: Everyone says being a mother is the most rewarding yet
challenging experience; what would you say your biggest
challenge is/has been so far?
DAKORE: I agree that motherhood is rewarding yet
challenging because that has been my experience so far. I still
find it challenging especially with juggling my many roles of
wife, mom, actor, daughter, big sister and friend. My biggest
challenge has been feeling a sense of guilt when I leave my kids
at home when I have to work because they’re both still very
young.
CF: For a mom of two adorable children, can you please share
two parenting principles you work on implementing with
your kids?
DAKORE: I’m a big kid at heart so I love to have fun with
them and let them be children but I try to be firm when I have
to especially because they’re both very independent like me.
CF: What would be your reaction to any of your kids going
into entertainment?
DAKORE: I wouldn’t be surprised considering the apple
doesn’t fall far from the tree but at the same time I would let
them do what they are born to do and whatever they choose
because inasmuch as I’m their Mom, God gave them to us with
a specific destiny and special gifts so I will encourage them to
follow their own paths.
CF: Do you purposefully keep your kids away from the
spotlight? If so, why?
DAKORE: As a Mom, my first priority is to love and protect
my kids so I do purposely keep them away from the spotlight
as much as I can for now because I want them to choose if this
is the life they want. Maybe when they’re a bit older and a little
more aware of what I do they can make their own decisions
about that.
CF: Define quality time with your husband?
DAKORE: Quality time with my husband is, anytime we are
together. We try our best to have date-nights where we go to
the movies, dinner or an event. There are times when we’re
both busy and life gets in the way but we constantly work at
creating time for each other.
CF: How do you let your hair down with your girlfriends?
DAKORE: I don’t hang out with my girlfriends as much as I
would like to but when we do get a chance, it’s on and popping!
We go to dinner or clubbing and we turn-up!
CF: Is there a beauty product you can’t resist?
DAKORE: Sunscreen. I’ve seen such a difference ever since I
started religiously using it to maintain my skin tone because
the sun nowadays is no joke especially because I tan very
quickly.
CF: Who are your favourite designers?
DAKORE: In Nigeria, I’m a fan of JBL, LDA, Tiffany Amber,
Ituen Basi and more recently Gozel Green and Maki Oh.
Internationally, I love DVF, Zac Posen, Roksanda Ilincic and
Tom Ford.
CF: How do you define fashion? What 3 words best
summarize your style?
DAKORE: There’s this quote I like that sums it up totally,
“Fashion is just another accessory for someone with great
style”.... I’ll say my style is unique, elegant and modern.
CF: Heels or Flats?
DAKORE: Heels for fantasy, flats for real life!
CF: Who’s your style icon?
DAKORE: Cate Blanchett.
CF: What’s your signature scent?
DAKORE: This is tough because I love scents and have several
to fit my varying moods but I’d have to say right now I’m
loving Bal D’Afrique by Byredo.
CF: Which look did you love more during the Complete
Fashion shoot and why?
DAKORE: Another tough one because all the clothes were
gorgeous(s/o to all the amazing designers) but my stand-outs
are the Resource Control outfit with the hat by Mai Atafo
where I got in touch with my south-south roots as well as my
androgyny game and the JBL flapper dress for obvious reasons,
to flap away my sorrows!
CF: Do you miss your dreads?
DAKORE: Oh yes I do! I miss them very much actually but
I’m comforted by the fact that my hair is still natural and I can
go back to the locs anytime I want but I’m really enjoying the
versatility I now have to rock different looks.
CF: What is your favourite fashion accessory? DAKORE: I have a weakness for shoes and make-up.
CF: How have your health & fitness goals evolved over the
years? Any routine?
DAKORE: I’ve been doing different forms of yoga on and off
for about 10years and it helps me stay flexible and fit physically
as well as mentally with the meditation side of it. More
recently I’ve incorporated Pilates, Zumba and Power walking
to my routine especially after the babies. I also embarked on
a lifestyle change with my diet by swapping white bread and
pasta with healthier wholegrain alternatives for example. It’s
not easy though, I do fall off the wagon sometimes as I have
a weakness for chocolate and other sweet things but I try to
keep it all in moderation. I have recently done a fitness video
with the amazing Kayode Fahm and Zainab Balogun so please
check it out.
CF: As brand ambassador for an international brand such as
Pampers, how do you believe you represent the brand? What
should would-be mothers expect to see? Would there be brand
tours?
DAKORE: It’s truly an amazing honour to represent such a
brand like Pampers by P&G especially as a new mother that
a lot of mothers can relate to. We have to deal with so many
new challenges and the right diaper for our precious little ones
is high up on that list but because Pampers is synonymous
with quality and it’s a brand that’s trusted worldwide I think
it’s a great fit. We just launched our brand new Pampers
Baby-Dry diaper and the feedback has been amazing! I also
just signed on as a Brand Advocate for Cow&Gate by Danone
Nutricia and I have a blog where I share my own challenges
and experiences so it’s a huge honour to be affiliated with
brands that represent quality on an international level as well
as relevant to my current phase of life.
CF: It’s absolutely great to have you back in the acting world.
What should we expect from you this year? DAKORE: It’s awesome to be back, I truly missed work. I’ve
been filming a lot recently so watch out for me in a feature
film called ‘50’ with Mo Abudu as executive producer and Biyi
Bandele (Shuga, Half of a Yellow Sun) as director. There is
also ‘Lunch Time Heroes’ directed by Seyi Babatope (When
love happens). Both will be out later this year. I’m also in
‘Unconditional’ with Uche Jombo and a short film ‘Paired’
with Femi Jacobs which you can watch online. In addition,
I’ve worked on stage on ‘Hearword’ which is directed by the
amazing Ifeoma Fafunwa for two seasons which has been
really great so I’m diversifying a lot and constantly challenging
myself to be a well-rounded actor and performing artist in
general.
CF: Are Theatre and Broadway on the cards at all? What’s
your dream role?
DAKORE: Oh yes for sure! My most recent acting training was
done in Chicago at Act One studios and it’s a real theatre style
approach which got me psyched about stage and I’ve definitely
caught the bug since then so if it’s in the Lord’s divine plan and
the opportunity presents itself I will surely not turn it down.
CF: Before your short break, you had been in the movie
industry for almost 10 years, if you had to choose someone to
play Dakore, who would it be and why?
DAKORE: I’ve actually been in the entertainment industry
since 1997 when I started as a TV presenter, for movies, it’s
been 17 years so it’s been a long time. To be honest, I’ve never
thought about that (who can act me) but I’m really impressed
with the crop of new talents we have in Nigeria. I’ll be on the
lookout now that you’ve asked though!
CF: Which directors will you like to work with at home and
abroad?
DAKORE: At home, I would love to work with Kunle Afolayan
especially because it’s been a long time coming, Stanley
Ohikhuare and the great Tunde Kelani. Abroad, I would love
to work with Alejandro Innaritu and Angelina Jolie.
CF: Which Hollywood star would you like most to work with?
DAKORE: Kevin Spacey, Angela Bassett, Angelina Jolie, Lupita
Nyong’o, Frances McDormand and Laurence Fishburne
CF: You’re so approachable and relatable on TV. Your fans
are berserk over you. Even during our shoot with you we
experienced ‘The Dakore Effect.’ What do you think brings
about this consistent positive energy?
DAKORE: Thanks for the compliment. I truly have the
absolute best fans who I call fan-ily because they push me,

care about me and are constantly supporting me and I don’t take them
for granted, then I have an Awesome God who saw it fit to bless me with

opportunities to be positive. Don’t get me wrong I have my bad days where
it feels the world would come to an end but I dust myself off when I’m
done and keep it moving. Also, I like it when there’s good energy and vibes
around where everyone is at ease and it starts with me and my attitude
CF: How do you stay motivated especially in a country such as ours where
things can seem a little slow paced?
DAKORE: My faith in God and the unconditional love from my family
keeps me going.

CF: With the long days on movie sets and motherhood, how do you balance
it all? Do you have any favourite tips you’d like to share that work for you?
DAKORE: It’s really by the grace of God. It gets really hard sometimes when
I can’t pick them up in the afternoon and ask how their day was and mother
them but I believe it will pay off in the end. They will hopefully be inspired
and encouraged by seeing their Mom going to work, being productive and
fulfilling her God-given purpose. I’m constantly on the phone with my
family checking in and making sure everything is good, then when I’m back
home, I’m fully present as if I never went away in the first place.

CF: What inspires you?
DAKORE: My daughters’ laughter, music, being at the beach,
travel, books, fashion. As an artist, I draw inspiration from
everything around me.
CF: What’s your proudest moment so far?
DAKORE: Wow there have been so many moments it’s hard to
choose one but watching my daughters growing up happy and
healthy with my best friend is a real standout!
CF: What genre of music do you love most and why?
DAKORE: I love Classic African and Contemporary Jazz a la
Fela Kuti and Nina Simone and all in between. I also love Soul
music by D’angelo, Maxwell, Erykah Badu, and Sade. I grew up
listening to these artistes and songs as played by my Dad as a
child and I have an old soul.
CF: If you were stopped anywhere and given a microphone to
sing a song, which song would it be and why?
DAKORE: My current go to is ‘My baby just cares for me’ by
Nina Simone.
CF: We know you love fashion, you love clothes, so if you had
to go back in time which fashion era would you like to be in?
DAKORE: I absolutely love the 50’s era with the full skirts and
nipped in waists...Ladies were so lady-like back then. I also
adore the 70’s full flared denims and boho chic looks.
CF: If you were told you had only 5 things to take with you to
a deserted island for a month, what would be your 5 picks?
DAKORE: Water, sunscreen, phone, lip balm and music.
CF: Are you where you always dreamt you would be at this
point in your life?
DAKORE: I’m where God intends for me to be and I accept it
gratefully.

MAKING WOMEN BEAUTIFUL

Men Are Beautiful Too
It’s getting more interesting by the day, MY predictions
that a lot of beauty brands will come into the country
has come to pass. Within the last few weeks, I have
attended the launch of skincare brands such as Emmaus
and Elizabeth Arden, (see images on our website, www.
beautyboxmagazine.com), which have come into Nigeria
to ply their trade and probably make their mark in the
beauty industry.
take pride in the fact that you are par t of a global market
that restores the beauty and confidence of the coloured
woman.
So what does that say to the indigenous beauty brands,
‘you have got to up your game.’ Now is not the time to
produce sub-standard products, or sell fake products just
to make some quick cash. No! Now is the time to conduct
professional research and come out with the right products
for the African, nay coloured woman.
Then began the search for the right personality for the
first male cover and so we selected David Onyedike, also
known as Davesucre, he is a celebrity makeup ar tist and
very talented. I have worked with him a few times and
his excitement every time he does his work is always
infectious.
Produce the right products for our skin, publicize it and
Also, we have other male related ar ticles, in fact I would
say more male ar ticles to balance this edition, but there is
also the ‘No Makeup Trend’, which is a hot look for 2015
and other hair and beauty ar ticles.
That being said, I am so excited to bring you our first male
issue in Beauty Box magazine. It has been a long time
coming, especially when it’s obvious that our male folk are
also stepping up their game in the grooming depar tment.

Who says a man can’t be groomed when about to take part in a photoshoot? You need to get
rid of shine and have a smooth finish in order to look picture appropriate. Davesucre shows
us how to groom for a shoot.
....Clean face
with a facial
wipe or baby
wipe.
Moisturise the face
and prime with
a mattifying face
primer.
Powder the
entire face
to even out
skin tone and
eliminate
shine.
Brush the
brows
to keep
them well
arranged.
Comb or
brush beards
with either
a comb, hair
brush or old
toothbrush
depending on
the length and
texture of hair.
Apply very
little lip balm
to eliminate
dryness. Make
sure it’s not too
much so that
your lips don’t
look glossy.
Use a concealer
under the eye to
eliminate dark
circles.
Brush hair
properly with
a hair brush
or an old
toothbrush.
Use your favorite
make-up setting
spray to set the entire face and add
a little moisture to
the skin leaving it
looking dewy and
healthy.

avid Onyedike, popularly known in the
beauty industry as Davesucre, is one
celebrity Makeup artist who has created
amazing beauty looks with his brush.
Gracing the cover of Beauty Box, the
talented MUA who also did his own
cover-look make-up shared the story of
his rise and rise in the industry. We can
confidently say that the best is yet to come for this budding artiste, as he
reveals his future plans in the industry…..
Take us down history lane to how you became a makeup artist?
I have always been a lover of arts and as a kid I enjoyed drawing,
painting and everything colourful. My mum always called me a gifted
child so everyone in my family knew I was arts inclined hence I was
encouraged to study Theatre Arts at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka
where I majored in costume and makeup. The rest they say is history.
What celebrity clients have you worked with and who are your
favourites?
I have worked with popular celebrities like Genevive Nnaji, Tiwa
Savage, Late Goldie, Omotola, Waje, Tonto Dikeh, Omawumi, Toolz,
Dbanj, Ezinne Akudo, Anna Banner, Kate Henshaw, Niyola, Don Jazzy,
the list is endless.
What are your most defining moments as an MUA?
My most defining moments as a makeup artist have been
winning the FAB award in 2011 as the makeup artist of the year,
working at the London fashion week and opening my studio called
Davesucre.
How about challenges?
There has been a lot of challenges along the line but the hardest has
been dealing with power supply, beating Lagos traffic to meet up with
appointments and dealing with lazy and unserious staff.
How long does it take you to do a makeover on a client?
It takes me about 15 minutes to finish a face if the client sits still.
What is your best makeup product and why?
My best makeup product is the Lancome Miracle Nude foundation.
It’s simply amazing.
What do you think is the way forward for MUA’s in the future?
Unity is the way forward.
What future projections are you planning for?
I have plans of launching the DaveSucre makeup line sometime in the
nearest future. So lipsticks, brow pencils etc with the name Davesucre is
on the pipeline.

Sizzle With
Straw Curls
Rock Your
Natural
Hair In Style
BY RITA OKOYE
Like braids and cornrows, straw curls set gives your hair a
break from the regular styling, combing, and brushing manipulation you typically encounter during daily grooming. Straw
sets last longer than other sets like braid-outs and twist-outs,
and the curls only need to be moisturized, oiled, and fluffed
each day. It works on both virgin and non-virgin hair. Long
or short hair weave-on pieces are also not left out to make the
curls last long. You need to make use of spray gel to retain the
curls. Hunting for the perfect curl may not be easy, it may take
a while until you find the right products and techniques to
achieve the perfect curl,
but it will all be worth it in the end.

Avoid brushing your hair
when it’s dry because it
will just go pouf, use your
fingers or a wide toothed
comb, not a normal brush.

Deep condition your hair
at least once a week to
keep it hydrated before the
hairstyle. There are many
deep conditioning treatments
available. Try Ojon Oil Deep

BB-Man Date Grooming Guide
4 easy to-do steps to your perfect date!!!
Byline: Emmanuel Sadi
You certainly don’t want body odor or bad breath to let you down or knock your buoyancy at any event. Whether it’s a special anniversary,
a wedding party, cocktail event, dinner or a date with that hot chic you’ve been chatting up online, chances are how you look is going to
send messages about you before you say a word. Not to worry, BB-man gets thinking on all you need to look and feel great for any date.
Here are 4 easy to-do steps to your perfect date.
*Kissable Lips:
Lips lack oil-producing sebaceous glands and are typically prone to dehydration,
to keep yours looking kissable, lightly brush off any dry skin with a toothbrush
(a mixture of olive oil and salt works too), then apply a flavour-free lip balm like
Aesop’s Protective Lip Balm.
www.aesop.com…N3,780
* Basic beard hygiene:
* Use a Fragrance With
Staying Power:
Here are a few man-scents we’ve found that have stamina;
Ermenegildo Zegna’s Haitian Vetiver. It has been tested and
trusted for the ultimate staying power everyman needs to
woo a woman all date long.

For starters, keep your beard clean and
fresh by washing with a face wash or
shampoo and don’t overdo it. Ensure your
facial fuzz is soft and conditioned apply
some fragranced beard oil like Tom Ford’s
Oud Wood Beard Oil. The best time to do
this is immediately after the shower while
your pores are still open, but since they’re
pocket sized, why not take them with you
and re-apply just prior to meeting your
date.

Cosmetics launched
in Nigeria?

and above. *Keep a fresh breath:
If you find it difficult to maintain a fresh breath, try
using a gadget like the Philips AirFloss Pro, which
uses rapid bursts of air and water to effectively
remove plaque and trapped food particles.
Otherwise the regular way to remove the gunk
between teeth is traditional dental floss, it’s much
more fun to use to boot. You can also replace the
water with mouthwash for super fresh breath.

OH NO SHE DIDN’T! This
is what happens when
someone allows a drunken
person to make a dress for
them. Madam, where are
you flying to? This dress
can serve as a parachute,
a mosquito net, Chuky’s
bride’s wedding dress and
even a scarecrow’s dress
but definitely not for the
red-carpet!
We start this
edition with
Mr. Y.A.W, who
decided to take
a trip back to
his secondary
school days
when he wore
his father’s
jacket over his
school uniform.
Mr YAW, we
get that you
make money
from making
people laugh
but this “bobo
no dey die”
look isn’t for an
awards show
red carpet! You
seriously need a
stylist.
Welcome
back to
Nigeria.
This is very
creative
and very
fashionable
if you are
a tailor for
masquerade
uniforms.
The spiky
hair belongs
in an alien
movie and
the top part
of the dress
looks like
something
from the
TMNT movie. Sister
thanks for
bringing
awkward
to the red
carpet.
This outfit is easy
to make for those
of you that want
to get stoned on
the street, just
cutout fat lines
of leather from
your sofa, wrap
it round your
lingerie and over
your boobs then
remove your curtains and staple
them to the side.
This dress is a
magnet of tears,
it’s way too revealing and it’s a
definite eye sore.
#DontTryThisAtHomeOrEver
Fashion
Compiled by Emmanuel
Sadi
We travelled from Lagos to Johannesburg and here’s our full list of
Africa’s biggest fashion faux pas!
So South Africa is
experiencing the terrible scarcity of black
cotton fabric, that’s
why our darling red
carpet star decided
to use only 1.5 yards
to make her outfit!
Sister Ngiyaxolisa
that’s Zulu for sorry,
because this outfit
belongs in the trash
can.
Here comes the bride. The idea behind
this outfit is brilliant but the execution
is poor, the fitting is too tight largely
due to wrong fabric – too thin - and it
clearly looks uncomfortable. The cape
might have been a stylish choice but all
its doing is killing the style. What do
you think members of the grand fashion
jury? Yay or Nay?
38 | www.completefashion.org
Look what we have here, a fish dress... I wonder
how many fishes she killed and removed their
scales to make this dress. Very creative but it’s not
eco-friendly, and why didn’t you scale enough fishes to cover your boobs? This fish scale nightmare
doesn’t look good on you
All hail Queen
Bird Nest, she
looked lovely
in this dress
but then she
remembered her
little bird that
died and she
paid tribute to it
by rebuilding its
nest for the red
carpet. That is
the only logical
theory for a
beautiful lady
who decided to
ruin her dress
with a bird nest
hat.
Another South
African queen in a
white lace silhouette dress with
gold details. One
question though;
how come you
forgot your underwear? You are
not dressed if you
look naked. And
please ditch the
crown.
What a woman can do, a
man shouldn’t try at all!
Denrele is back again and
I don’t know whose closet
he raided but this is a fashion mission gone wrong.
Black leather pants under
a gold lace dress, what are
you? A Christmas tree?
That is not to mention the
ill-fitting shoes. This isn’t
how to dress like a woman,
and it’s no way to dress
at all.
We can forgive
the hideous
makeup but
this dress is just
suicidal. Look
how you exposed
your bony chest
to the cold, I see
no reason why
you would risk
your health to
impress us. Please
stop trying to
imitate Giuliana
Rancic and add a
little weight, then
cover up and stay
healthy.
This dress is
everything
in this life; a
Christmas tree,
a fishing net,
a mosquito
net, a Barbie
wedding dress,
the wings of
an angel and
many more.
Susan said it’s
high fashion
and I see her
flying high
with the wind
in this dress
very soon.
on Jury
South Africans
love to show off
some skin, and
wear the craziest
textures like lady
Marsala in this
picture, the cutouts are totally
unnecessary and
they make the
dress look like it
went through a
kitchen blender
before she wore
it!
Everybody say ‘Hello’ to Mr. and Mrs. Leather Strap! Why bother
wearing a dress when your nipples are on full display for the
whole world to see? You are beautiful and you have a great
body, making a naked statement like this will only help you get
noticed for the wrong reasons. #BringBackTheDress
Aduni is back with the laps!!!… The color suits you but
the fitting is wrong and there’s just too much show of
sexy - way too much skin than the world expects to see
Last time Alex
was on Fashion
Jury, he was a
fruit salad, now
he is a rubik’s
cube. I think I see
where this is going; next red-carpet appearance
would be a superman costume.
Brother Alex,
please go back to
single-toned suits
and leave colours
alone.

Sports luxe aesthetics; Mesh has dominated the runways and fashion weeks in menswear. It’s
practically impossible to think Spring/Summer 2015 without thinking of the MESH trend. The
seasonally appropriate and aero-friendly fabric, used outside of its functional sporting routine is
relatively uncommon. This means that applying mesh to the causal side of men’s clothing is a
revolutionary concept for fashion designers. The most successful addition of mesh on the runways
came courtesy of Temitayo Nathan for Elan (Fayrouz) and T.I Nathan as showcased at Lagos Fashion &

We have a theory that Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt is
Nigerian music industry’s ONLY DJ. Maybe, it’s
because he has been around for as long as we
can remember, or because of his ‘Street Credibility.’ It could also be the fact that he recently
released the biggest collaborative album out of
Africa -a feat in rave review for him alone. For
twenty-six years, this remarkable and humble
personality has taken the DJ profession to different parts of Nigeria, he has hosted artistes,
played parties with not less than five hundred
‘records’ and owned the Jimmy’s Jump-off - the
first ever video mix programme on Nigerian
television which has today become the official
Naija entertainment party. From the streets
of Obalende to the international scene, Jimmy
Adewale Amu shows the meaning of resilience,
ambition and unquenchable passion as even
one year after his silver jubilee as a DJ, he has
set the record to becoming the biggest Nigerian
DJ of all time.

“Style for me
is not a trend
and it’s not
what you’re
comfortable in,
it’s what makes
you feel good but
of course with a
little effort.”
When DJ Jimmy Jatt arrives, he’s calm. Somehow
the Complete Fashion team had taken a wrong
turn and had to run round Lagos trying to retrace
routes, cut off traffic and meet up with ‘Call Time’.
Yes, we know, it’s embarrassing! The car had
hardly stopped when we burst into the studio as
apologetic as those whose hands were caught in a
cookie jar.
The shoot takes off in a quick spin, DJ Jimmy Jatt
is readied for his first look and then his second till
the last one. Antonia Soares, Complete Fashion
editor inquires after his children and he seems to
light up as he readily replies on their welfare. You
can tell that he loves his ‘girls’. Twitter, Facebook
and Instagram are instantly abuzz with backstage
shots of the shoot.
DJ Jimmy Jatt is a delight to have on set, he is
down –to-earth, agreeable and has no airs despite
all his achievements. In his own words ‘It’s all
God’s grace.’ In a short while, he is interacting
with everyone on set as if he has known us all
for ages. It is obvious that we aren’t the only ones
with this opinion because Dakore (star actress,
singer, business woman and also our celebrity
cover model) says of him, ‘DJ Jimmy Jatt is super
cool.…’
Let’s start at the middle: DJ Jimmy Jatt has
amassed multiple awards, he has ridden on
Street Credibility for as long as he can remember
- he gained popularity by performing from
the neighbourhood - and he has drawn a lot
of upcoming DJs to the profession. Having
graced the same stage as Usher, Shaggy, Naughty
by Nature, Sean Paul and a host of other
international acts, the super-talented DJ, is deftly
positioned at the echelon of stars.
In this interview, we put him through a barrage
of questions which border on the challenges he
faced on the way to the top, his family, his life and
his humble beginning.
CF: You are in your 26th year as a DJ. What does
this milestone mean to you?
J.J: For me it seems to get better every year, first
of all, I believe that in everything you do in life,
experience matters. The fact that the profession
has grown as against where it was when I started,
makes me feel excited, so for me it’s been all
goodness.
CF: How was your start? Would you term
yourself as one of the privileged few or was your
start rough?
J.J: It was very rough, it’s not even anywhere close
to what you see these days, when I started as a
DJ, the profession wasn’t something that people
wanted to reckon with, it wasn’t regarded or
respected, people just felt it was for some low life
drop-outs.
CF: Did your family express distaste in your
career choice?
J.J: From the very beginning, I never had any
problems from my parents, or brothers because
my family members are very liberal. My brothers
were DJs before me so it was easy for me to
get into that but from the outside, I mean the
extended people and the neighbourhood, people
judged from a distance. I know friends that their
families warned never to be seen around you
because you’re a DJ, or they didn’t want to see
you around them because they think you’re a bad
influence.
CF: Were there any challenges?
J.J: Pretty much, there were a whole lot of
challenges in terms of perception. In terms of
getting songs to play as a DJ, you had to wait for
someone that traveled abroad because at that
time, the Nigerian music scene wasn’t as vibrant
as it is now, so it was mainly American music that
we played at events and to get those songs, they
had to be on ‘record’ (vinyl) which only came in if
somebody brought them in, unlike today, where
every song is gotten literally by downloading
music online. Back then, sometimes, songs
are released weeks before you even got hold of
them. The ‘records’ shops will tell you that ‘Oga
is travelling next month, he’ll bring them when
he comes in’ – this means not being able to serve
clients with fresh music constantly. In terms of
www.completefashion.org | 45
equipment, it was difficult getting the ‘Turntables mixer’ and
other DJ equipments. Sometimes, your mixer develops a
minor fault and the part is not available. People weren’t even
ready to pay you for being a DJ the notion was ‘Ahhh, just to
come and play music’ sometimes they’d promise you ‘there’ll
be girls there, drinks, food’ and assumed it was enough
(LOL). It was a big challenge.
CF: In the music industry will you say that there is a struggle
to remain relevant?
J.J: In life generally there’s a struggle to remain alive, for you
to find a means of survival, there’s a struggle. For me, the
struggle is not competition; it’s a case of taking care of your
own business and making sure that a reasonable amount of
what you should get, comes to you. If you don’t work hard at
what you do, if you don’t present yourself at a certain level,
business would be bad and if business is bad, you’re out of it
in no time. I’m in a profession where it doesn’t come readymade in terms of respect and earnings, if you say you’re a DJ,
you have to prove yourself to earn some respect, so it’s double
effort to even earn something as a DJ. I’m glad and grateful
to God for life but constantly, I’m always looking at myself
and asking ‘how do I make myself a better person and how
do I make myself a force to reckon with in what I do?’
CF: Are the DJs of this age finding it easier now than those
that have been in the profession long before them?
J.J: Of course, we find it easier now (I’m part of now as well),
it’s easier now than it used to be. For instance, when I started
as a DJ, for you to perform at an average party, you needed
an average of four to five hundred songs in a night, and that’s
even cutting down to the barest minimum. Those songs
would come in four to five hundred records which meant that
for you to go to any party, you needed to carry at least four
to five crates of records each. If you know what a hundred
records looks like - you can imagine moving around with all
that, and in terms of mobility, it was tougher back then. I
have been to every nook and cranny of this country by road,
from Maiduguri to Sokoto and Calabar because it was not
very easy to go by air as a DJ in those days. Right now, all
you need is a flash drive or hard drive with over a thousand
songs without breaking a sweat.
CF: Has technology done more harm than good?
J.J: It’s a lot easier now and even in terms of equipment,
technology has helped in that. But the same technology
that has helped to make it more mobile and more compact
has permitted every Tom, Dick and Harry into the business.
In those days, before one decides to become a DJ, the first
question that person asks himself/herself is ‘how do I build
my record collection?’ The number of DJs at that time were
not as much as we have now. Now, you can just wake up and
all you have to do is buy as many songs and some people
don’t even buy but download for free and after building up all
the hit songs they need, they can become DJs the next day.

CF: What was the inspiration behind ‘Jimmy’s Jump Off ’
and after years of the show, are you seeing the aim you
intended for it at the beginning?
J.J: Yes. Jimmy’s Jump Off actually started as a TV show
in 2007 on Silverbird Television, it was the first videomix Programme on Nigerian television. At that time the
technology to do video mixes on television was new, after a
year of doing it on TV, people came to me and said: ‘are you
sure that you are actually mixing videos? It’s not possible to
mix a video.’ They were sure that some editors mixed or did
the editing and put the videos together for TV. So we felt that
we should do a live show where we would do the live video
mixes at an event, in 2008 we started the Jimmy’s Jump-Off
concert which was a live version of what we were doing on
TV. After we’d done that, we decided to make it an annual
event so we started doing it every year and it’s developed
from what it was originally meant for. Right now we term it
the official Naija entertainment party.
CF: We’ve seen you feature in music videos and not
actually sing, do you secretly crave to be an artiste?
J.J: I became a DJ from being an aspiring artiste but
I think I came too early for the kind of music I was
into, I was doing rap music at that time, I have a whole
lot of demo tapes and I’ve never released any of it. I am a DJ
that hosts artistes and that’s what a DJ album is about and
“I’m in a profession where it doesn’t
come ready-made in terms of respect
and earning, if you say you’re a DJ,
you have to prove yourself to earn
some respect.”
CF: What does being a father mean to you?
J.J: It’s a good feeling. I guess I’m very lucky, I have
two daughters and I’m the only guy in the house
amongst the four of us. My wife is my very good
friend, she’s been with me long before there was
Jimmy Jatt so I don’t have someone at home that’s
‘trippin’ on my fame or popularity, and that’s very
important to me. The relationship I’ve built with my
kids as well is so much of ‘we’re pals’ rather than the
father-child type of relationship.
CF: Do you see any of your daughters following your
path especially now that female DJs are on the rise?
J.J: They like music no doubt, that is by default, and
I think among their peers, they probably will be a
bit more knowledgeable in terms of music. One of
them has shown interest in terms of trying to be a
DJ, but let’s just say that I’m the guilty one who’s still
saying that ‘it’s not time yet’. For me, it’s on the side.
Education is key; get the right grades first and every
other thing can follow. My attitude is more like if you
want to do this on the side, all well and good. I have
lured a whole lot of young people into becoming DJs
in this country so, my own kids are no exception. If
they choose to go that way I would be happy but I’m
not going to lead them by all means in that direction
because my dad was not a DJ and there’s no rule that
says, ‘you must do what your dad does.’
CF: Let’s take you to the future, on the day that any
of your daughters walk up to you and say ‘Dad, this
is the man I want to spend the rest of my life with.’
What would be your reaction?
J.J: Err, (laughs) save me that for now, because
right now I don’t even want to think about that but
the truth is it will happen. You know I play at a lot
of weddings as the DJ and I see all that bride and
groom dance and then the father is handing over and
I’m like wow! ‘so one day, some guy from somewhere
is going to come and carry my daughters away but
the truth is, that’s how I got my wife, right? So I need
to deal with the reality. I love them so much and I
hope and pray for the best for them. I am hoping that
the men that’ll come into their lives would be good
men and better men than myself that would take
better care of them than I would. That’s all I hope for.
I’m looking forward to it (not now though) but it will
happen and I’ve prepared myself psychologically for
it.
CF: Should your future son-inlaws expect the father pep talk
from you? What are you likely to
say?
J.J: I’ll make them realize how
precious and how valuable my
daughters are to me and I’ll plead with
them if necessary not to hurt or treat
them badly in anyway, they should try as
much as possible to be good people to them.
I probably would remove the ‘in-law’ and see
them as my sons.
CF: Do you think you’d be the cool father-in-law
or the stern father-in-law that men should never
mess with?
J.J: My name is Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt and that comes
by default, I am just a cool person. I’m kind of
ageless, I have people that I consider as friends that
are in their twenties, I have friends in their thirties,
I also have friends in my age bracket and also those
that are a lot older than I am. So, I’ll definitely be
the cool father-in-law.
CF: Having to be the only man in the midst of
women at home do you think that you are more
sensitive to the plights of women than most?
J.J: Of course I am. I have had this discussion
with people in the past where I say that I’m so
glad to have two daughters and people say ‘it’s
because you don’t have a boy that you’re saying
that.’ Sometimes God gives you what’s best for
you. For me, you can’t do any wrong as a female,
if a lady throws something up and it lands on
my windshield and it breaks, I’ll probably worry
about the lady than my windshield. If it’s a guy
I probably will get real stern, so if I had a son, I
might have been stricter but with girls, no. People
say I spoil my daughters, let me spoil them, they are
meant to be pampered and treated like queens and
princesses. It is a good feeling. For me, I think I’m
just blessed to have my kids. Even within my family,
the female family members are closer to me than my
male family members.
CF: What’s up with your caps?
J.J: I am a very shy person, and if I say that I am shy
now then imagine how shy I was back then. I started
wearing caps because I was becoming popular, so
I felt that by wearing caps I could cover my face
from being recognized. Now, wearing caps for me
is like wearing a shirt, truly I really wish that I don’t
wear caps, but that’s how it started and I got so used
to it and I’m trying to get out of it but it’s still not
working. My glasses are prescription lenses, all the
glasses you see me wearing are prescribed. I try to
use fashion frames to look funky for a DJ.
CF: What’s style to you?
J.J: Style for me is not a trend and it’s not what you’re
comfortable in but it’s what makes you feel good but
of course with a little effort. I wear a suit and wear a
cap and people say ‘no don’t wear a cap on this’ but
once it’s me doing it, you accept it because that’s who
I am. I think you can define your own style.
CF: Which designers are you loving now?
J.J: I really don’t look out for a particular designer
even though I tend to go for designer wears. I
Bomber Jacket Sanusi Lagos |T-Shirt Ajehwearz by Tony Okoye | Jeans Stylist’s Own | Shoes Dr Martens (Stylist’s own)
it’s done everywhere in the world. As DJs we host
artistes on ‘record’ so when I’m doing a single like
‘Stylee’ for instance and I’m hosting Tuface, Mode
9, and on another track I’m hosting Banky W and
Phyno, it’s just my project in terms of idea and the
people who I feel fit into the idea. The last album
I released is the biggest collaborative album out of
Africa so far with sixty-six artistes on it. An artiste
will not do that because if an artiste features sixtyfive other artistes on his own album, he will be lost
on his album. So it is only a DJ or a producer that
can pull that kind of album off. We did the first one
which was the ‘Definition’ album in 2007, I had
‘Stylee’ as the hit single and I had about twenty-three
other tracks on the album. For the second album, it
was a make or break thing, if I had failed, it would
have closed the door against DJs doing singles or
doing albums in this country but because of the
success of the album, lots of doors opened and other
DJs have followed suit, giving DJs another way to
brand themselves.

basically get into the store, I like what I see, it suits my direction and then I take
it. These days, in order to support our industry, I tend to make a lot of outfits
from here and the good thing about that is that unlike the outfit you buy in the
stores elsewhere you might not find too many people having what you have.
For this shoot, I’m wearing ‘proudly Nigerian’ my shirt is Ajehwearz by Tony
Okoye, he is P Square’s brother, I’m also wearing T.I Nathan, a young upcoming
designer label, so they are all purely Nigerian.
CF: You look great! How do you keep fit?
J.J: I don’t gym religiously but then the job I do, helps. It helps to be a DJ, my
mental state sometimes, helps my looks, because I’m always in the midst of
youthfulness. Even by default, my approach to life and a lot of things around me
is tied around youths and then the job keeps me moving. Though I do a bit of
exercise but I don’t think that’s what’s responsible for my looks.
CF: What’s your favourite place to relax?
J.J: That’s very simple. It’s my bedroom on a day that no one is even around and
I lock myself up.

CF: What’s your advice to that young DJ who literally wants to be like you?
J.J: Before becoming a DJ, one needs to be passion driven, I’ve seen people come
in with a mindset that it’s a business where people are making money and if
that’s the way you see it, you can’t last in this business. You need to have passion
and love to play music and watch people respond to it.

The Phantom Rises to Celebrate the
Union of Nkem Kachikwu & Evans Jakpa
At the Oriental hotel on the 31st of January, Complete Fashion was on hand to celebrate with the
Kachikwu & Jakpa families the union between their children Nkem & Evans. From our experience at
the traditional wedding which took place a week before at Onicha-Ugbo in Delta state, it was expected
that this reception was going to be nothing short of refined opulence. One of the biggest highlights
of the day besides performances by some of Nigeria’s finest was the super dramatic entrance of the
couple escorted by models in Mai Atafo’s pastel coloured 2015 tuxedos ‘007’ style in a metallic silver
Phantom Rolls Royce which soared to the stage.
Knowing the status of the Bride’s father, Dr. (High Chief) Ibe Kachikwu as one of the country’s most
revered legal heads, it was no surprise some of the guests in attendance were some of Nigeria’s biggest
names in politics, oil & gas, banking, entertainment and private sectors. The bride’s father who is
considered as one of Nigeria’s most stylish men wore two outfits – a cultural attire designed by Lagos
based designer, King Hakbal, made out of woven silk threads in this year’s hottest colour, marsala with
tinge of gold which he wore for the church ceremony, and for the reception changed into a white &
blue Angelo Galasso tuxedo. The guests were equally swathed in bright coloured ornate fabrics most
of which reflected their places of the origin. When the bride’s father was asked to describe his feeling,
he said delightfully:
1
“I feel great about today, thankful to God that today eventually came and
wishing them the very best in their married life.”

According to Wikipedia, the first mention of red carpet was mentioned in literature in a play Agamemnon by Aeschylus, written in 458 BC.
Then it became a mark to signify the route taken by Heads of states on ceremonial and formal occasions which later extended to VIPs and celebrities at formal events. Since then at the beginning of every year, there is always the excitement of what would be worn at the first set of major
entertainment industry events. From the Golden Globes, SAG to the Grammys and the BAFTAs, movie stars, musicians, socialites, descended
on red carpets to show off like peacocks to millions of onlookers in some of the most beautiful and expensive designs. This year some looks were
daring a la Pharell Williams and girlfriend, even Lady Gaga attended the Grammy’s looking normal, some became iconic, George Clooney’s wife,
Amal. Lupita Nyong’o’s Calvin Klein pearl dress stole the show from every angle at the Oscars, and Rihanna slayed like the only girl in the world.
The men of course didn’t disappoint becoming more and more daring in their choices. Here’s Complete Fashion’s list of the best dressed men and

Welcome to Saro the musical

Festival of cultures
The Magical &
Captivating SARO
THE MUSICAL
Saro is the story of four young boys in search of greener pasture who migrate to
the promising city of Lagos from a little village called Kutuwenji with nothing, but
an abundance of hopes, dreams and believe that in Lagos, they would ‘BLOW’.
Saro tells the unforgettable and inspiring story of their journey to success amidst
trials, misfortunes and love in a city filled with broken dreams as Lagos is personified by its numerous colourful characters, chaotic pace of living and endless
drama.
The musical – a Bolanle Austen-Peters Production was staged at the Shell Hall,
Muson centre, with a 100-man cast led by prolific actor Gideon Okeke as one of
the four boys named Azeez, TV personality Dolapo Oni as Ronke, movie veteran, the resplendent Bimbo Manuel as Don Ceeto, the surprisingly charming Ade
Laoye as Jane, and guest starring Lami Phillips as the no-nonsense music/etiquette
coach Derry Black.
Saro is vibrant in every sense of it – the costumes were a mix of old and new,
taking influences from cultural fashion – the different major ethnicities that make
up Lagos, - a dollop of the 80s as we see in Ronke’s multi-tiered metallic dress and
‘poof ’ shoulders to the 90s embroidered natives and sequined jackets as worn by
the boys.
Saro pays homage to Nigeria’s rich musical history with hits from the likes of Victor Uwaifo, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Shina Peters, Aruna Ishola to modern day music
kings like, P-Square, Davido and Olamide – there is a bit of every music genre in
Saro. Combined with the brilliant music is the impeccably choreographed dance
routines, and super performances delivered by the talented cast – the actors, super
energetic dancers, flawless background singers and instrumentalists, organizers,
backstage staff - Saro paves the way while setting a high standard for homegrown
musicals which can be successfully exported out of the country.

lisco’s heritage is quite unlike
any other. Since 1846, our
luxury textiles have influenced
the fashion landscape in West
and Central Africa. Our fabrics reflect true
Dutch craftsmanship and were originally
known as ‘Hollandais’, from the French word
for ‘Dutch’. We are in fact still the only brand
creating authentic Dutch Wax fabrics. Vlisco,
