From Pastor’s desk: First Sunday of Lent
Reflection: Mark 1, 12 – 15:
“Repent and believe in the gospel”.
In announcing the good news, Jesus gave two
explicit things each of us must do to in order to
receive the kingdom of God: Repent and believe. When we submit to Christ’s rule in our
lives and believe the gospel message the Lord
Jesus gives us the grace and power to live a new
way of life as citizens of his kingdom. He gives us grace to renounce
the kingdom of darkness ruled by sin and Satan, the father of lies and
the ruler of this present world. That is why repentance is the first step.
Repentance means to change, to change my way of thinking, my attitude, disposition, and life choices so that Christ can be the Lord and
Master of my heart rather than sin, selfishness, and greed. The gospel
reminds us that the Spirit drove Jesus into the desert for forty days,
We too are sent into the desert of repentance to search our hearts,
hoping to resist what is evil and to embrace all that is good. God is
faithful to you on your journey of faith. On this first Sunday of Lent ,
we recall the twofold nature of this season. All we have to do is repent and believe in the gospel: the Good News. As we listen to these
readings today, let us recall our own baptismal covenant with God
and how we ourselves are repenting and believing in the Good News
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
O God, lead us this Lent into the deserts of our hearts. Let this days
be a time of discernment and discovery, of resolution and conversion,
that this springtime may be a season for beginning and new growth in
our lives. May your Word be our bread during our wilderness journey; may your light illuminate the treacherous turns of the road we
walk; may your grace and wisdom minister to us in our deserts of
sadness and despair.
