Awarded for outstanding overall contribution to the school community.
CULTURAL AWARDS
Awarded for wide ranging participation in the school’s cultural program.

Awarded for outstanding and long term commitment to the cultural life of the school community.
SPECIAL AWARDS
SCHOOL STUDENT LEADERS
The School Captains and Student Council Executive members are selected by staff and their peers to be
role models for all students. This certificate is in recognition of their service to the school community.
THE RITA STRANGE MEMORIAL TROPHIES (Crescendo Award and Concert Band Award)
Andrew and Greg Strange were Performing Arts students at North in the 1980s when Crescendo and the
ensembles were first formed. Grandparents, Bill and Rita Strange, were staunch supporters of the program
and the Strange family established these two awards in Rita’s memory to encourage and support key
performers who have made an outstanding contribution in each of these ensembles. Each award is a
perpetual shield to be presented to the winner each year.
DRUM MAJOR AWARD
The Drum Major has led the Marching Band, representing our school with dignity, throughout the year.
DRAMATIC ARTS ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD
Dianne Grech, a former student and teacher of North High and a deputy principal and principal at other
Queensland schools, was a passionate supporter of the Dramatic Arts and established this award to
encourage and support a Senior drama student who showed passion and potential to follow a professional
career in this area.
KAREN JACOBSEN AWARD FOR CULTURAL EXCELLENCE
This award is given by Karen Jacobsen, former North High student and international entertainer, to the
Year 12 student who makes the most outstanding contribution to and achievement in the Cultural Program.
PSW EXCELLENCE BURSARY (Cultural)
This award is given to the highest achieving student in the Performing Arts in Year 10.
LIONS CLUB BURSARY
Presented to a Year 10 student to continue on to their Senior studies. By academic success, personal
conduct and attitude to school, the chosen student exhibits the Lions Code of Ethics – self-worth,
industrious application to tasks, honesty and integrity, loyalty, service and citizenship.
ROTARY AWARD
Presented to a Year 11 student to further their Senior studies. The student exhibits the Rotary objectives of
positive interaction with students and staff, ethical standards, recognition of others and service ideal.
INDIGENOUS ARTS ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD (Junior and Senior)
These awards are given to acknowledge two Indigenous students (one Junior and one Senior) who show
exceptional promise in the performing or visual arts.
DAWSON MEDAL
This award is presented to a student who demonstrates leadership; commitment to the ethos of the school;
excellence in attitude and achievement; strong and consistent participation in school and community
activities; and an awareness of others and their needs.
SCOPE WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP BURSARY
The Scope Club of Mackay whose name stands for Service, Community involvement, Purpose, Opportunity
and Education, offers this bursary to promote Education outside the organisation by assisting a worthy
female student with her continued schooling.
EXCELLENCE IN VET STUDIES (Vocational Education Training)
This is awarded to the student who has shown the high level of motivation required to complete a number of
certificates whilst at school.
NUNYARA SCIENCE AWARDS (Junior and Senior)
Given by the Jubow family since 1997 in memory of their son, Alistair, these are awarded to the highest
achieving Maths/Science student in Years 10 and 12 who have constantly upheld the school ethics.
JAMES BIDGOOD SOCIAL SCIENCE & HUMANITIES AWARD
This is awarded to a student who has successfully studied a range of social science subjects in Year 12 in
order to encourage the continuation in the study of Humanities.
MACROSSAN AND AMIET SOLICITORS YEAR 11 BURSARY
For the student in Year 11 who achieves well, displaying diligence and tenacity.
McKAYS SOLICITORS LEGAL STUDIES ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
This award is given to encourage the development of Legal Studies in schools to promote interest in the
legal profession.
ADF LONG TAN LEADERSHIP AND TEAMWORK AWARDS
The Australian Defence Force gives this award to recognise and reward leadership in high schools. There
is one recipient from each of Years 10 and 12.
PETER JARROTT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
These scholarships were inaugurated in 2009 in honour of Peter Jarrott, who was District President of the
Mackay/Pioneer Hinterland District RSL, and was a very strong supporter of the school’s Lest We Forget
ANZAC project for many years. These scholarships are awarded to two outstanding members of the
Mackay North Lest We Forget ANZAC project.
THE IAN LUCK YEAR 7 & 8 ALL-ROUNDER AWARDS
This award is presented to an outstanding First Year student who has shown academic diligence and
citizenship throughout their first year of high school. This award is given in honour of Mr Ian Luck PSM who
developed the concept of the First Year Centre in 1977 and has been a driving force behind the continued
success of First Year students at North High.
SPIRIT OF NORTH HOUSE CUP
This award for excellence is presented to an entire House. Initiated by the Student Council Executive of
2012 to encapsulate the Citizenship and Service activities that are integral to life at North High. The Cup is
awarded to the House whose students contributed most in these two areas through participation in activities
as varied as the Cancer Head Shave and 40 Hour Famine, Debating, Maths and Science competitions, Art
Awards, contributions to school events, e.g. Fair and Tournament of the Minds and involvement in special
days such as the Region’s Marina Fun Run and the recent Rainbow Day. Points are awarded by teachers.
CITIZENSHIP ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
This is the student who, through initiative, leadership and teamwork, has made a significant contribution to
the school.
CALTEX ALL– ROUNDER
To achieve this award the student has gained academic achievement across a number of subjects, been
committed to doing their best, shown outstanding personal conduct, been a role model and leader,
participated in school and community activities and represented the school in sport.
TONY WILLIS CHEMISTRY AWARD
This award is given to the highest achieving Chemistry student in Year 12 in memory of Mr Tony Willis who
was a long serving Chemistry teacher and Year 12 co-ordinator at North. Mr Willis was highly respected by
staff and students at this school and throughout the district for his contributions to education.
JUNIOR DUX AND PSW ACADEMIC BURSARY AND YEAR 9 DUX
In 2015 the Junior Dux is the highest achieving student in Year 10 and PSW will give a bursary to
encourage the Year 10 student in their future endeavours. A Year 9 Dux is also given this year.
DUX OF THE SCHOOL AND TODD MAYCOCK BURSARY
Todd Maycock was School Captain at North in 1999 – one of the most dedicated and respected ever. He
was a principal trumpeter in the Marching and Senior Concert bands and made an invaluable contribution to
cultural life at North High. Todd was an extremely reliable and responsible student and a great role model
for other students. His family initiated this award in 2008 in his memory for the Senior Dux of the school.
