Cervi Leads the Field - Jacob Breaks Arena Record
Well the first 6 rounds of the NFR are in the books and wow what
a rodeo! As we prepare for the second half of the rodeo, we take a
look at what has already happened and preview what may still come.
Sherry Cervi and Stingray came into the NFR and did what they
do every year, run fast times. Those fast times lead to $70,413 dollars of earnings, the lead in the average by almost a second, and a
$37k lead in the World Standings. If she makes another 4 fast clean
runs she will be your 2013 World Champion and grab her 4th World
Title.
Chasing Cervi is 2012 Champ Mary Walker, and over the last two
rounds Walker and Latte have found their groove and are running
faster and faster. If Cervi and Stingray stumble along the way and
Walker and Latte keep on their current roll they could work their
way into a second title in a row. Looking at the standings halfway
through the rodeo, it really does look like a dual through the last 4
rounds between Cervi and Walker barring something unforeseen.
The story of the rodeo in the last few rounds has been Taylor
Jacob and her blazing buckskin, Honor Thy Frenchman, if it wasn’t
for a couple down barrels in the first two rounds, her name would
be right in there for the World Title. After running just 3 hundredths off the arena record in Round 4, Jacob and Bo came back
and crushed the arena record of 13.46 with a 13.37. She has now
won 3 rounds total and has checks in every round she has left the
barrels up. This teams fast times will make it extra tough for either
Cervi or Walker to get the round money they may need to put the
world title away, so that will be interesting to watch.
Lisa Lockhart and Kaley Bass are second and third in the average
and have made the solid runs everyone expected them too. Shada
Brazile keeps making good solid runs and sits 4th in the average.
The rest of the field has at least on barrel hit.
If the first six rounds are any indication, these last 4 round
should be electric. The NFR Arena Record has already been broken,
Cervi is on track to break the Average record and it looks like a
barrel racer has a chance to win the Top Gun award for the highest
money winner of the NFR across all events. Stay tuned for the
record breaking ending of the 2013 NFR.

Mp Meter My Hay (Stingray) and Sherry Cervi did what they do
best at the NFR; run fast times. In Round 1, they won the round
with a snappy 13.77. This is the pair’s 8th NFR round win together.
With her round money, her world lead over Mary Walker is now just
under $30k.
Sydni Blanchard and the speedy Pure Victory Dash (Twisted
Sister) overcame a little activity in the alley and a wide first to hold
the lead in the round for most of the night. They ended up second
for the night; just 3 hundredths behind Cervi and Stingray.
2013 Horse of The Year, Flos Heiress, and Fallon Taylor, made a
quick, solid run and moved up 2 spots in the World Standings with

NFR Rookie, Taylor Jacob, ran the fastest time of the night with
a 13.73, but tipped the second barrel, although she nearly kept it up
with a quick hand grab.
Jean Winters and Mary Walker both tipped the second barrel as
well. All 15 barrel racers rode the horses they were expected to ride.

For the second night in a row Stingray and Sherry Cervi scorched
the barrel pattern in the Thomas & Mack. Cervi rubbed the first on
the way into the barrel, but rubbing is racing at the NFR! The barrel
stayed up and the clock read 13.66, just two tenths off the arena record (13.46). The win put her Total World Earnings up to $184,677
and extended her lead in the World to just over $36k.
Slick By Design and Michele McLeod came back in Round 2 with
a quick 13.76 run for 2nd place after feeling out the NFR pattern in
Round 1.

to run a fast time of 13.89 placing 3rd in Round 2. Her over $11k
check kept her in the World Race with Cervi.

place check for the second night in a row.

Taylor Jacob and her speedy buckskin Bo (Honor Thy Frenchman) finally kept all their barrels up and ran a smoking 13.65 to win
Round 3 and run the fastest time of the Finals so far. In Round 1,
Jacob hit the second barrel to win 1st and in Round 2 she hit the
third barrel to win second.
Christy Loflin and Movin flashed their brilliance and got in the
mix tying with Kaley Bass and Cowboy for second place on the
night. This was Bass’ second check in a row and Cowboy is on a
roll.
Sherry Cervi and Stingray just kept running fast times, and their
nice consistent run netted them a 4th place check, extending her
world lead to just under $40k. Lisa Lockhart and Louie tied with
them with another trademark picture perfect run.
Mary Walker and Latte finished out the checks with a sixth place
check and kept in the money for the second night in a row and
remained #2 in the World.

Taylor Jacob and Bo smoked another fast time, this time only three
hundredths off the arena record with a 13.49! This win pushed their
NFR earnings up to $37,260 already through only 4 rounds.
Kaley Bass & Cowboy just keep getting stronger, placing in their
3rd round in a row and running their fastest time of the week so
far. The sit third in the average at this point.
Sherry Cervi and Stingray keep on keeping on, running a nice 13.81
and winning 3rd on the night, getting their fourth straight check.
Cervi has now won $54,688 at the NFR already and sits first in the
average, with a 55.11 on 4 and sits #1 in the World at $202,105 and
leads the world by over $50k now. Its the NFR, where anything can
happen, but Cervi is in the drivers seat for the World Championship.
Brittany Pozzi rode Shes Free To Flame to a 4th place check and
the former World Champions first check of the NFR.
There were 4 hit barrels on the night, and now 6 barrel racers

through the Finals, sitting second in the average and now having
won just under $30k. In true Louie fashion, he just gets faster and
faster as the Finals go on and he gets used to everything.
Mary Walker and Latte returned to the form that won them the
2012 World Championship last night; winning second in the round
with a quick 13.73. Even though she is $44k out of the World Lead,
there is $93,150 to win in the rounds over the next 5 nights so anything can happen if she gets on a roll.
Sherry Cervi and Stingray and Taylor Jacob kept up their winning
streaks and joined Christy Loflin and Movin in tying for 3rd place
in the round with a trio of 13.82s. Cervi is winning the average,
has placed in every round and has earning of $62,600 and looks to
be headed to her 4th World Title. Jacob continues to move up the
standings and now sits #3 after entering the WNFR in the #9 position. Loflin and Movin are getting used to the ground and setup and
could be a pair to watch in the second half.
Shada Brazil and Dial It picked up another check and are a solid
4th place in the average through 5 runs.
Fallon Taylor switched horses and got on Baby Flos full sister
Nicks Nefertiti. Jane Melby also switched horses, getting on Jm
Alive N Perquix.
There are now only 4 people with no hit barrels through 5 rounds.

Taylor Jacob and her great buckskin horse, Honor Thy Frenchman just blew away the arena record running a stunning 13.37. The
previous arena record was a 13.46 set by Carlee Pierce and another
great buckskin horse, Rare Dillion. This was their 3rd round win,
meaning they have won half the rounds at the NFR so far. Jacob
and Bo have picked up a check in every round they have left the
barrels standing.
Mary Walker and Latte were strutting their stuff for the second
round in a row, running a blazing 13.64 and they are definitely ready
for the second half of the NFR!
Brittany Pozzi rode her 5 year old, Ima Super Fly Guy, tonight for
a 3rd place check. That means her two checks on the week came on
2 different 5 year olds. They most likely don’t keep records on that,
but it is probably the first time that has been done!
Sherry Cervi and Stingray stayed solid with a snappy run of 13.75
and continue to lead the average, the world, and the NFR money
earnings. They are 4 clean runs from a 4th World Championship.
Fallon Taylor got back on Flos Heiress tonight and added blinkers and got in the money with a nice 13.76 run.
Louie and Lisa Lockhard and Movin and Christy Loflin both had
great runs to tie for 6th and round out the check earners of the night

Miller and CE Supah Sassy Triumph at Kindergarten Futurity

The 2014 futurity colts are off and running. Angel Rae Miller and
CE Supah Sassy, bred and owned by Rick Erwin, DVM, claimed
one the first major titles of the 2014 Futurity year with a $2,526
Kindergarten Futurity Championship.
The $5,000-added 2D Futurity, held Dec. 6-7 at the Southeastern
Arena in Unadilla, Ga., drew 34 entries for a total purse of $13,162.
Miller, Micanopy, Fla., started riding Sassy, a 3-year-old daughter
of leading sire Frenchmans Guy out of Supah Jess 9 (TB), by On
To Glory (TB), a year ago.
“When I got her she was green broke,” she explained. “She’s always been pretty laid back and easy. She’s never been super naughty
or anything like that. She’s always been willing. She’s really big. She’s
like a gentle giant. That’s the only way to really describe her.”
At Miller’s Triple Cross Ranch, Sassy was exposed to all manners
of chaos. The ranch not only serves as home to Miller and husband,
Chris, her sister and her children, her parents and grandmother, but
it’s also home of the Church of Triple Cross, a Cowboy Church led
by her father Norman Edwards.
“Around my house it’s pretty crazy,” she laughed. “We have
church a few days a week with a big band that plays. There are tons
of kids and it’s super loud, so if (the horses) have any wildness or
spook to them they get gentle pretty quick considering the church
is right next to the barn. There’s not much spook left in them once
they’ve been in my barn a little while.”
Living and training in such an environment has got Sassy and
Miller off to a solid start. On December 1, the first day Sassy was
eligible to run, she and Miller were just out of the money in the 1D
of the Juvenile Futurity at the Fiddler’s Turkey Run in Jacksonville.
“We didn’t get to exhibition because there wasn’t time for it,”
Miller said. “I was a little bit concerned the first time running her
in a building, considering we’re from Florida, there’s not a lot of
indoor pens to get
in. I just kind of

“At Unadilla, we got some exhibitions so I felt a whole lot more
confident with the situation,” said Miller, who won the first go with
a 15.696 and came back with a 16.152 to placed third in the second.
“When I went down the alley way, I said, ‘I’ve got to see what I’ve
got,’ so I went ahead and sent her through. My plan was to ride
in the moment. If she had trouble with the first, I’d just kind of
jockey her the rest of the run. After she turned the first, I just went
to smooching. She turned all three of them. I feel really blessed to
ride a horse that talented.”
Miller, 29, grew up making her own horses. Her father was a true
all-around hand with horse winning in all manners of disciplines
from cutting and reining to rodeo.
“I’ve always had a good broke horse,” said Miller, a two-time
WPRA Southeastern Circuit finalist and a past finalist at the Old

Fort Days Futurity. “It might not be the best barrel horse, but it was
good and broke. My family always felt like if I wanted to do it I had
to work at it. I was never bought anything that was very expensive.
I’m very blessed to say, that I think learning the hard way is the best
way.”
She credits her dad’s sister, her aunt Darlene Fletcher as her biggest inspiration in the sport.
“She worked very hard,” Miller said. “My aunt probably played
the biggest part in teaching me barrel racing. I got most of my
willingness and want-to from her.”
When she’s not training barrel horses, Miller works as a farrier.
“I have an amazing job as a farrier with Shawn Jackson,” said
Miller, who has shod horses for 10 years. “He’s taught me everything. I love shoeing horses. It’s probably my second passion.”
Miller is grateful to her family and friends for all their support in
helping her pursue her passions.
“I just feel really blessed that I get to do what I love to do and
that I have a family that’s helped me get to where I am,” she said.
“The spiritual and moral support has been overwhelming. I feel like
I’m at a good place in my life with my horses and everything that’s
going on right now. I feel like I’m reaching for my dreams and actually going for it.”

Mother, Daughter Duo Take First, Second at C-N Futurity

The mother-daughter duo of Linda and Linzie Walker from Conway, Wash., took top honors at the Fourth Annual C-N Futurity,
held Dec. 6-8 in Lemoore, Calif. Each year, a stallion auction funds
the added money for the futurity and a stallion incentive. This year
the futurity had at least $12,475 in added money.
Linda came from behind to surprise Linzie for the average win
with RB Dyna Twist (“Dashy”). The victory was worth $1,531.
Linzie, on the other hand, put together two solid runs to take second in the average and $1,773 aboard Dancein For Cash (“Bella”).
“I came out of no where and bumped her,” laughed Linda. “She
wasn’t very happy about that, but if she’s going to be beat by someone, she’d rather it be her mom. She won more money but I got a
saddle, but she’ll probably end up with that!”
Making their finishes extra special was how much they enjoyed
the hospitality of event producer Charlene Ornales of C-N Quarter
Horses.
“It was great,” she said. “Talk about good ground and great
people. I feel like I have a whole new barrel racing family in California. Charlene and her whole family worked their tails off. They
invited a whole bunch of us into their house to watch the NFR at
night. We didn’t have to buy stalls. They let us set up panels out in
their pasture. The fees were reasonable. We had a good time; it was
really fun.”
Ironically, Linda was a little leery of entering the futurity. Her
mare, unlike Linzie’s, wasn’t quite as solid and she hadn’t had many
runs outside.
“I figured it was a 2D, maybe I’ll get lucky,” she said. “Friday
night we went to a jackpot at Bakersfield. They had a little $100added jackpot and she ran an 18.0. I thought ‘Oh, I might be able
to squeak into the 1D.’ Linzie had a 17.5 on a beautiful run in a big,
outdoor pen. I was like, ‘Wow, Linzie you’ve got this in the bag.’ She
was feeling really confident, too.
“On Saturday in the futurity, I ran an 18.1. It was smooth, but
not perfect. It was good enough for eighth place and I was happy.
On Sunday, I don’t know where she got that run from, but she
tightened up her corners and listened really good. She wrapped
them, except for the third. She got a little bit deep on that one. I
could not believe a 17.5 came out of that horse. How do you drop
6/10ths? We hadn’t cracked the 17s anywhere. I wasn’t expecting
that until next summer. It was just unbelievable!”
After years away from training young horses while Linzie focused
on WPRA rodeos and her youngest daughter Cheyenne played
sports in high school, Linda decided she needed a young one to
haul with her daughter Linzie, who had raised Bella, by Find Jo
Cash out of one of their first futurity champions Watch Flit Flight,
by Dinner Flight. She bought Dashy, a 2009 daughter of A Firewater Twist RB out of Dyna Fame, by Dash Ta Fame, as a yearling
from her breeder Fawn Kern of Rainbow Bar Ranch.

Headin’ For Home
L
ast week we were decorating The Barn for Christmas and
my two year old granddaughter was there helping….I use
the term loosely! We have this old Charlie Brown tree that
we put up real high and attach fake red cardinals in it (no matter
that we don’t have cardinals in Wyoming, we are going for the red
look). I was being funny and I clipped one of those cardinals to
the top of my head. It was pretty fetching if I don’t say so myself!
I asked Cylee if I was pretty with a bird on my head. She tipped
her head one way, then the other…looking…looking…thinking…
VERY serious. After considerable thought, she raised one eyebrow
and said, “Yes! It’s good!” It was soooo cute! How can anyone look
good with a bird on their head??? But she loves me! And she thinks
I’m wonderful!
God loves us and He thinks we are wonderful….no matter what
silly things we attach to ourselves….like guilt, condemnation, inferi-
ority or a multitude of other things. Yep, loved us so much that this
month we celebrate Jesus being born…born so He could die and
pay the price for us so we wouldn’t have to! I know, like Cylee, He
doesn’t see the weirdness in us. He sees the real us! It’s Christmas
time! Go all out and be the person that God created you to be…..
gifted, perfect, free and full of Him!
