ON THE COVER:
hen The Club at Boca Pointe opened its
doors in 1982, I’m not sure the club’s staff
realized then the impact it would have on
so many generations of lives. I moved to
Boca Pointe as a teenager and some of the best memories
of my youth were spent at the club with my grandparents,
Joan and Lenny Magazzolo. I have fond memories of
family barbecues spent by the pool, singing in the lounge
with Joel Odierno and creating the perfect omelets at
the grand buffet. They were members until his death in
2011 and I was both delighted and honored to return
to the Club at Boca Pointe to put together this issue. In
this issue, you will meet the wonderful staff behind Boca
Pointe’s outstanding facilities, experience the incredible
social programs at the club and learn about a community
that has so much to offer members of all ages.
Thank you for reading and have a happy and healthy
holiday season!

The Club at Boca Pointe has redefined country club living. With an
18-hole golf course, 29 Har-Tru tennis courts, endless social activities
and a variety of membership options, Boca Pointe has become the point
of interest for full-time Boca Raton residents and part-time residents
from around the globe.
The grounds of Boca Pointe are meticulously landscaped within
a community that spans 28 villages with more than 3,400 homes.
Conveniently located on Powerline Road in Boca Raton, the Club at
Boca Pointe offers members resort-style amenities with world-class
dining options, entertainment and athletics in a warm, welcoming
environment.
The golf program at the Club at Boca Pointe also has many options
for members to get into the swing of things. Headed up by Buck Deibel,
who has the teaching designation of Master Professional, golf at Boca
Pointe is in a league of its own. From golf clinics to private lessons, the
golf program has become so highly recognized that golf enthusiasts have
been known to travel from out of state just to get a lesson on the Jack
Nicklaus-designed course that is one of the centerpieces of Boca Pointe
club life.
The club’s award-winning tennis program has 29 tennis courts
with three USPTA professionals. Boca Pointe members interested in
improving their racquet skills will have a ball on the club’s courts which
are located near the clubhouse as well as on the Athletics Center side
of the club. The stadium seating set up on Boca Pointe’s tennis courts
has also facilitated the perfect location for charity matches and large
tournaments such as the USTA Florida State Adult Championships.
Staying fit is also exhilarating and enjoyable at The Club at Boca
Pointe, thanks to the club’s sprawling 40,000-square-foot Athletics
Center. The latest in exercise classes and cardio equipment is available to
members on a daily basis. There is rarely a wait for a piece of equipment
or to get into your desired class, which is another important aspect.
Speaking of staying healthy, delicious heart-healthy food choices
are also available at the club’s various dining options. With Chef Terry
Daniels in charge of the menu, the Club at Boca Pointe prides itself
on providing the best food made from the finest, freshest ingredients
available. Whether you’re in the mood for a decadent juicy burger,
comforting deli-style fresh carved turkey sandwich or a light spa-like
salad, there’s something for everyone on the menu at Boca Pointe.
The extremely active card rooms at the Club at Boca Pointe are also
an important part of the club experience. There are separate ladies and
men’s rooms and a co-ed room.
But perhaps one of the most celebrated amenities at the Club at
Boca Pointe is the social calendar. There are hundreds of activities to
choose from at this club, which delivers weekly live entertainment, and
daily activities that stimulate the heart, soul and mind. There are also
volunteer groups such as the Boca Pointe Performing Scam Troupe,
which educates people on financial scams. From a ritzy afternoon tea
party at a historic hotel on Worth Avenue to Broadway shows, comedy
acts, cruises, day trips and interesting lectures, Social Director Jane
Young ensures a good time is always scheduled.

Helen Karpel, Boca Pointe General Manager
By Joanie Cox
Boca Piquant
8
The Club at Boca Pointe is a rare gem within the club community.
But one of the things that make this spacious club so spectacular is the
leadership behind the operation.
As one of the few female general managers in the country club
industry, Helen Karpel stands out in her field as an innovative leader and
respected financial whiz.
Born and raised in Miami, Karpel, who speaks fluent Spanish,
studied business administration with a concentration on accounting
at University of Miami. As part of a close-knit Cuban-Jewish family,
Karpel learned early on the importance of hard work, good values and
dedication.
Her journey at Boca Pointe began 15 years ago as controller. With
Karpel at the helm, the club is running stronger than ever and fiscally
flourishing. “I watch spending very carefully,” Karpel says. “I come from
a business background.
The club has always been a frontrunner in revolutionary thinking. It
was one of the first to have a website and offer a variety of membership
opportunities.
“We’ve always tried to be progressive,” Karpel says. “We have had
our website for many years. We also try to be on the cutting edge of
technology. I look at this club more as a lifestyle country club that
provides the highest level of service. You’re here because you want to be
here.”
Because membership is not mandatory at the Club at Boca Pointe, it
has opened doors for an impressively active membership who truly wants
to be there--not one that’s forced to be there. With more than 3,400
homes within 28 villages, Boca Pointe has become a local landmark
for luxury, sophistication and class. As a country club, the plethora of
programs and amenities offered is as extraordinary as it is fun.
“There’s something here for everyone,” Karpel adds. “We have a
variety of clubs. Both our golf and tennis programs here also have
many wonderful social aspects. We have men’s and ladies’ leagues and
tournaments as well.”
Socially speaking, Boca Pointe’s entertainment is an enviable asset..
“We have an amazing social program. We have FAU Lifelong Learning
programs here and shows,” Karpel says. “We also do many seminars of
various topics. We have Lynn University’s Conservatory of Music come
here. Jane Young takes members to shows at Kravis Center and Broward
Center. We have very active card rooms. We have a full facility at the
athletics center and our food is superb. Chef Terry is the best.”
Karpel also likes to get members’ children and grandchildren in on the
excitement. “We did a big carnival a few years ago where we closed Center
Court and had the event in the parking lot,” Karpel says. “We had a big
celebration with the kids. On Dec. 28, we’re doing it again.”
In addition to members enjoying the club, staff members have
demonstrated their loyalty as well.
“We have employees who have been here for 25 years,” Karpel explains.
“The members look at the club like an extension of their home. It’s very
personal to them and very much a part of them. The atmosphere is warm,
inviting and friendly.”
The Club at Boca Pointe has also undergone several renovations.
“We redid the main dining room and lounge just recently along with the
banquet rooms,” Karpel says. “We redid the card rooms two years and the
bathrooms upstairs. We’re scheduled to redo the lobby mid-2013 when
leading lady: With Helen Karpel at the helm, the Club at Boca Pointe is
thriving. Todd roller
the season ends. We’re looking at a bunch of different options for how
we’ll transform that room. We’re also going to be refreshing the rugs and
tables in the Grand Café.”
At the end of the day, Karpel loves her job and admits one of the best
parts of her job is hearing a member or staffer share positive feedback.
“It’s extremely rewarding when I hear a member tell me they love it here
or when a staff member who has been here for many years tells me they
love working here,” Karpel said.
Outside of work, Karpel is a devoted wife and mother. When she’s not
at the club, she is spending time with her family and watching her son
play baseball.
As for the future of Boca Pointe, Karpel aims to continue offering
her members the best country club life with options that best cater to
members’ lives.
“Five to 10 years from now, I still see this club offering the same great
programming,” Karpel says. “I want to continue to have a club where
people have choices.”

LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU: “We have added lecturers from FAU.
Our lectures are very popular with our members. We have many more
seminars. We have dance classes, art classes. Our Friday night events are
wonderful. We have a show time series with terrific entertainment. We
go to all the Broadway shows and we take day trips and over night trips.
We’ve gone to Missouri, Memphis, Charleston, New England--so many
places. The participation in our social events is better than ever. We are
sold out on so many events. Our members really enjoy using the club.”
MUSICAL NOTES: “We have live entertainment weekly at the club.
We have lounge entertainment and live music at brunch and we’re adding
a Saturday night karaoke party that will include dancing, singing and a
Viennese table. We’re also going to have a square dance. We had a great
Halloween party and our New Year’s Eve party will include a band and
comedian. Every Friday night our members can dance to disco, Latin,
rock ’n’ roll and ballroom music in our lounge. I love it when I walk in
and everyone’s up dancing and having fun.”
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: “Having High Holiday services
here is something really special we offer to our members.”
JOB APPRECIATION: “When I hear a member say I’ve changed
their life, that means everything to me. I think of our members as
family. Many of them I have known for so many years and I want to
make every day matter for them. I love my job. I found something I
absolutely love. Not everyone finds that.”
SET SAIL FOR ADVENTURE: “We have a great response for all
the show time shows coming to Boca Pointe. We have 60 members
coming on our cruise in December. We’re going on an 11-night
cruise. I just came back from taking our singles on an over night trip.
We had 40 members with us and it was so much fun. We went to Fort
Myers.”
MINGLING SINGLES: “I think we have the best singles program in
all of South Florida. Boca Unos is very popular. We do the inter-club
dinner dances and we also have special happy hour for our singles
once a month. We’re also having one event a month to take them out.
An example of these events is a trip to Boca Raton Museum of Art
and dinner at Max’s Grill. We have a lot of events where members can
meet other members.”
NEW FRIENDS AWAIT: “We also have a program called Moving
Forward. It’s not just for singles, but a lot of singles go. I ask all
new members to go to Moving Forward to meet other people. We
have a psychotherapist. She brings a topic and the group discusses
the topic together. Afterwards they all go to lunch at the club. We
call it Moving Forward because it’s about moving forward from any
situation. Whether your marital status has changed or you’re new to
Boca Pointe, we recommend going to Moving Forward. I listen to the
members and aim to give them what they want.”
FAMILY TIME: “When I’m not at the club, I enjoy spending time
with my family. My wonderful husband Ron is my assistant. I have
a set of quadruplet grandchildren who are 21 months old. Their big
sister is going to be five. Then I have two grandchildren in college. We
all have the best time together.”

Jeana Bartell, Catering Director
tonight’s
gonna be a
good night:
The Club at Boca
Pointe is home to
some of the most
legendary parties
put together in
Boca Raton. Jeana
Bartell is the bubbly and organized
woman behind
the Club at Boca
Pointe’s prestigious
catering options.
Todd roller
Time at the club at Boca Pointe: 3 years
Bartell is the go-to gal for all private party planning at the Club at
Boca Pointe. With her own wedding coming up in May 2013, the bride to
be is always searching for the latest and most brilliant ideas and themes
for the parties she plans.
PARTY GIRL: “I went to University of Florida and graduated with
an event management degree. I did my internship at Boca Pointe and
was then hired. At Boca Pointe, I plan weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs,
anniversary parties, birthdays, corporate functions as well as women’s
luncheons, card parties, tennis and golf events and charity events.”
CATERING TO YOU: “We can really customize menus for our clients’
events. If there’s something that’s not on the menu, our chef can create
it. We do so many parties each year. We have several each week. In season
we’re very busy and it’s great.”
TENDER MOMENTS: “I really enjoy working with weddings and to
watch them grow through the year of planning and see the bride’s face and
the groom on their wedding day. Sometimes I cry during the first dance
because it’s so sweet. I’m present at all the events until the very end.”
Boca Piquant
12
SWEET REPEAT: “It’s a great feeling when a member comes back to
host their second child’s bar mitzvah. You know the client so well by that
point it’s just a lot of fun. I love when the room gets totally transformed.”
MOST EXOTIC: “In March we had a basketball-themed bar mitzvah but
the theme was hidden. It was very classy. There were hints of basketball
elements on the stands of the hi-top tables to resemble a basketball hoop.
It was a nice, upscale bar mitzvah with subtle elements. There were square
tables, round tables and different centerpieces for all the tables.”
THE BOCA POINTE DIFFERENCE: “We really make them feel
special on their big day. I take every event and work it as if it were my
own event. The day of, every little detail I take into consideration to
make sure it looks amazing and everything is in place. I definitely take
pride in my job.”
TAKE YOUR SUITE TIME: “We not only offer a bridal suite for
brides to get dressed in, but we go that extra step. We put a nice cheese
display in there with fresh fruit and champagne, wine, soda and water
so it’s a nice place for them to get ready with their bridesmaids. We also
offer a complimentary foursome of golf so the groom and his best man
or maybe father of the bride can come out and play some golf the week
before the wedding. It’s nice because it’s a private course. It’s a great perk.
We also offer complimentary charger plates and napkin rings for the
tables, table numbers, and special linen options with different options.
We have all those extra things many venues don’t typically spend the
money on. And as an extra surprise, one year after the wedding, we send
a note to the bride and groom and invite them to come back and have
dinner on us with a bottle of wine as an anniversary present.”
IN HER FREE TIME: “I enjoy hanging out with family and friends and
my fiancé. I like to go to the beach and shop.”

INGREDIENTS FOR EDUCATION: “I went to Johnson and Wales in
Providence, R.I.,” graduated in 1996 and I did my externship for The
Breakers. I worked up and down the east coast in Charleston, South
Carolina, but I’m originally from Pennsylvania.”
GLOBAL DINING: “One of the things about being a country club chef
is you have to have a very diverse background. You could be doing an
Asian night, Italian the next night, then a fine dining wine dinner or a
function with pizza and burgers going on at the same time on the other
end of the club. You kind of have to be a Jack-of-all-trades. You need to
know how to put out a banquet, but you also need to know how to put out
a lunch for a 100 people or to-go food. We do weddings bar mitzvahs, all
kinds of things.”
Boca Piquant
14
FRESH AND FABULOUS: “We do everything in-house, which is
one of our biggest selling points. My bakers come in at 3 a.m. to make
our deli loaves and all our breads here. We do all the pastries in-house,
too. When we have ribs on the menu, we smoke those in-house. We
don’t really buy any prepared foods. We do everything here and that’s
the way it’s supposed to be done. The biggest selling point for me to the
membership is knowing everything is fresh, done right and made from
the best possible ingredients.”
SWEET EATS: “On Fridays we do a traditional buffet with brisket,
latkes and all the traditional baked desserts such as rugelach and babka.
We offer a number of sugar-free desserts. We can transform many of
our recipes into a sugar-free version, which is great because we’re able to
modify the desserts without sacrificing the flavor.”
DELIGHTFUL DISHES: “We have a number of different menus. We
have the regular menu, which is a list of appetizers, entrees, salads and
sandwiches. We email to our membership daily our daily specials, which
is a nice feature. Our members can sign up for this to receive our daily
specials. We also include a wine coupon so they can get a free glass of
wine.”
GRAPE ESCAPE: “We do wine dinners. We just did one in the spring.
We’ll do five to six courses. My chefs and I get together to pair the wines
with food. As we serve each course, I’ll come out and describe the wines
to the membership. We also have a representative here from the wine
company. It’s an interesting evening and everyone always has a good time.
The members can also purchase the wines they sampled if they like it.”
SERVING UP SPECIALITIES: “We change the daily specials every
day. That includes special sandwiches, salads and appetizers, up to four
different entrees from fresh fish to meats and steaks. Our most popular
menu right now is our ‘Eight for 18.’ It’s a list of eight different entrees
available to the membership through dinner and includes soup, salad bar
and entrée of their choice--a complete meal for just $18.”
CARRIED AWAY: “We have a curb side pick up. Some of our members
that are on their way home from work or just want to have dinner at
home. We have call-ahead curbside pick up. They just pull into valet and
pick up their order. They can pretty much order anything on the menu.”
FRESH AND FINE: “A lot of places outsource for pastries or bread and
we have the integrity here where you can go to any member at every table
and have that confidence knowing everything you put out was exactly
how it should be. There are no preservatives or anything in our food and
it’s all natural with the finest ingredients possible. Our fish comes in
every day. We do all of our butchering. We make everything from our
sushi to our stocks, sauces, soups and bread. We have a guy who does
sushi for us.”
freshness and quality to service.”
PAMPERED PALATE: “We do everything in our power to
accommodate members’ needs food-wise. I had a member the other day
request quiche Lorraine. I keep a calendar rolling in my office of member
requests. When you go into a restaurant the menu is typically the menu.
We have one member that likes hand-rolled black squid ink pasta so we
make him that when he comes in. There are a lot of things that make the
ROOM FOR GREATNESS: “We are blessed with kitchen space here.
We have about 30,000 square feet of kitchen space, which is great
because we need our bakery department, production kitchen and all our
different departments. We also have a banquet kitchen. Our refrigerated
space is larger than most restaurants.”
HEALTHY BITES: “We’ve integrated healthier items into the menu,
such as gluten-free. We always have two vegetarian selections on our
menus and we do offer a lot of choices for our members. We also have
members who want their ribs or burger or corned beef or French fries. We
also do a lot of fresh fish dishes.”

COURTING IMPROVEMENT: “I’m doing events for members based
on their needs. I ask what are some of the things they want to see and I
create something to fit their personalities and what they like to do. This
club likes a lot of parties and they like to dance. We have a fun bunch
that likes to get together. Our opening event in November is always very
successful. We have a barbecue outdoors, under the stars. We bring a DJ
and the members dance the night away while watching some great tennis
at the same time. We also do the same event at the end of the season in
February.”
TRAINING GROUNDS: “I’m not the typical story. I’m more of a selfmade professional. I did not play junior tennis or college tennis. I was
an athlete in Puerto Rico, where I’m from. I played baseball but also had
a love for tennis. At 19, I picked up tennis recreationally. I fell in love
with the game so much I decided to pursue a career in it. Tennis is a game
you can learn forever. No matter what level you are, you can continue to
learn. You’re learning all the time with this sport and the competition of
it is exciting. It’s a battle between two people.”

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT: “Lessons, clinics and team practices
are some of the services we provide. Something new we started is
complimentary monthly clinics. We do something called one-on-one
doubles where the members use half the court. It’s taking off with many
members. We offer a juniors’ program with an advanced academy for
players looking to play college tennis. We also have clinics and a program
for beginners. We offer all levels of junior tennis. Normally we start kids
around five or six. But there are some who start at 4 ½ years old.”
COMPETITIVE EDGE: “The Florida State Championships are
something we proudly host. That tournament attracts players from all
over the state of Florida. It’s a weeklong tournament that takes four or
five days to finish. We’ve been nominated for tournament of the year
because of this tournament. We also host about three junior tournaments
here a year. We cover all the bases here. I have programs for every age and
social events that people like. I try to listen to the members and create
events I know they’ll enjoy.”
FAMOUS TENNIS ACES: “The Andy Roddick Foundation has had
events here which also brought out Venus and Serena Williams. We had
the Bryan brothers play here. One year they brought the Davis Cup here
and people were taking pictures with the trophy. We had about 1,500
people here for that.”
AWARD-WINNING PROGRAM: “We have 29 courts. They’re all HarTru clay courts. One of the biggest things about this club is we won the
member organization of the year in 2008 from the USTA. And I won a
service award from USPTA and USTA. It was a big year for us.”
LOVE OF GAME: “It’s rewarding to be able to teach someone tennis
and see their progress. I like helping people and serve them with no ego
in mind. I like making it enjoyable for our members on the tennis court.
Tennis is a lifetime sport.”

WILD CARD: “We have gin rummy, canasta – any kind of card game
you can imagine. We also have bridge tournaments, mahjong games
and offer many different types of play. You can be a social player and a
competitive card player and find a game. It’s all levels. We do an event
several times a year called ‘Getting to know you’ and we bring in some of
the veteran card players and have an open house. It’s great for people who
want a new partner or want to learn a game.”
A FULL HOUSE: “We have a coed card room as well as separate ladies
and men’s card rooms. The rooms are packed every day. There’s still a
need and desire for separate card rooms but a lot of people really like the
mixed play.”
BRIDGING THE FUN: “This club offers a lot of different events.

GOLF ROOTS: “I learned the game as a junior golfer around the age
of nine or 10. I played junior golf in high school down here in Pompano.
I went to FAU and pretty much worked at Boca Pointe since 1983.
I’ve been here a long time. I’m a master professional, which is a PGA
classification less than five percent of PGA members attain.”
in the form of clinics. We offer playing lessons. We have a very extensive
and active tournament program here. We have a nine-hole ladies league,
a nine-hole men’s league, 18-hole men’s and ladies leagues and our
tournament program from a seasonal stand point starts in mid-October
and runs through the month of April.”
SWEET CHARITY: “We have First Tee, which we started last year.
It’s a nine-week junior program for kids. We had our first session in the
summer and another in October. The kids had a wonderful time. We’re
working with a wonderful man, Jack Barrett of First Tee. Our First Tee
partner is JCC in Boca Raton. They have been instrumental in helping
us market the program. We’ve gotten a combination of kids from our
own community and JCC. As far as the club itself, we offer junior golf
programs like most clubs during the holiday season and spring break.
Our goal with First Tee is to leverage that program and build it up in to
something that is multi-tiered… the members have really embraced that
program and we have so many members who want to volunteer for it.”
PAR PAIRS: “Couple’s golf is something we are very involved with here.
Every month we have mixers, which are always sold out. They usually
evolve around the holidays and run through the summer. During the
summer we also have member/staff scrambles and they’re extremely
popular. That’s a nine-hole scramble and then members usually go up
after for a light dinner and some cocktails. The staff typically plays with
the members and it’s very popular. We participate in a number of interclub leagues here at the club. The Emerald League is for low handicap
golfers and we also participate in the South County League.”
ON COURSE: ”The golf course was designed by Golf Force, which is a
division of Jack Nicklaus Enterprises. The course was open for play in
January 1982. We’ve redone greens. We did a moderate renovation a few
years ago. We have TifEagle Greens, which is a very nice turf grass. The
course has a little something for everybody. We have so many different
tees. You can play it all the way back, so if you’re a low handicapper it can
be very demanding and challenging. If you’re a high handicapper you can
also enjoy the game. We have an 18-whole facility. We outsource our golf
maintenance to Valley Crest. We offer private lessons and group lessons
GOLF GROWTH AT BOCA POINTE: “The program is a lot more
extensive now. Everybody runs a very active and fun tournament
program. We have changed the program over the years to keep things
fresh. We do try every year to change up the formats and keep things
exciting for the members.”
IN THE SWING OF THINGS: “Programming-wise, our lesson
program is very attractive to members and potential members. We offer
video analysis. The membership here is very active. We also have golfers
coming down from New Jersey and New York just to take lessons at the
club.”
Continued from page 17
here enjoying the facilities. In the off-season, we still
offer duplicate bridge tournaments and a variety of
things including lessons. We bring in professionals and
teach lessons for those who want to learn more.”
SNACK TIME: “Our most popular snacks right
now are M&M’s and popcorn and our members love
chocolate covered raisins. We switch those on and off.
Right now we’re serving yogurt-covered raisins, which
they love. We also provide fresh and healthy snacks and
we have card room attendants tending to the needs of
each member to make sure they have everything fresh.”
NIGHT GAMES: “We have daily card play. Sometimes
after dinner around 7 p.m., they’ll come in for evening
play. At night it’s a very relaxed atmosphere. It’s
typically not competitive and more of a social game.”
OFF HOURS: “I love spending time with my
family—my husband and two children. I also love to go
spinning, which is a new hobby for me.”
WINNING HAND: “Being a part of someone’s daily
life that brings them so much joy is so exciting. We have
an opportunity to impact the members on a daily basis.
It’s not like we see them and won’t see them again. We
have an opportunity to see them everyday and get to
know them. They treat this club as an extension of their
home. We get to know them, their stories and be part of
their life.”

HEAD OF THE CLASS: “The classes here are wonderful. We have
half-hour workouts called Expresso classes so the members can be in

We offer what members want and Zumba. We also have a senior Zumba

Our dancers are very good and do a studio performance twice a year.
We’re looking at adding more ballroom dancing classes here and they
don’t have to have partners. We rotate dance partners so everyone can
participate. We offer 55 classes a week. Thirteen are aquasize. And we do
small group functional training. It’s like personal training in a group. It’s
very popular.”
STAFF LOYALTY: “You don’t get the cookie-cutter gym experience

our employees have been here 10 to 12 years. We also have workers who
have been here more than 20 years. We currently have seven personal

we have a day spa with an aesthetician and nail tech to provide different
nail treatments and massage therapy. We do everything from hot stone

WE ARE FAMILY: “It’s fun seeing multiple generations of our members

Hello, Black Halo!
Designer Laurel Berman
hits Boca Raton to
talk fashion
By Joanie Cox
Boca Piquant

Clean lines, a slenderizing cut and sexy accents are three reasons
celebrities such as Alicia Silverstone, Maria Menounos, Tyra Banks and
Kelly Ripa can’t get enough of Black Halo. Headquartered in Los Angeles,
Laurel Berman started women’s fashion line Black Halo 10 years ago with
her husband.
“We call her the naughty angel,” Berman says of the origin of her
company’s name. “She’s got a halo but it’s a little tarnished. If you were to
know me you’d realize that’s a little bit of my attitude because I love to break
the rules. I love being a rebel and Black Halo garments are very flattering,
sophisticated and have sex appeal and attitude.”
Berman visited Neiman Marcus in Boca Raton last month to meet with
shoppers and highlight pieces from her fall 2012 collection. Black Halo
dresses are best known for signature, fitted silhouettes. “We nip the dress
in around the rib cage, let it out below and do whatever it takes to make the
dress fit in a flattering way,” Berman explains. “Our garments are meant to
be worn tight in all the right spots.”
While Black Halo offers a variety of dress styles, the Jackie O dress has
gained a faithful following of fans. “The Jackie O is our most famous style.
Kelly Ripa was one of the first stars to wear it,” Berman recalls. “Blake
Lively, Fergie, Kim Kardashian, Katherine Heigl, Jenny McCarthy and
Guiliana Rancic have also all worn it. You can wear it with a leather jacket to
toughen it up or a Chanel-esque jacket.”
Available in three lengths, which includes a mini version, a style two
inches below the knee and a style two inches above the knee, Berman is
proud to offer options to women. “There’s something for everybody in the
line,” Berman says. “Sleeve options are a big thing at Black Halo and so are
necklines. It’s all about showing what you’re comfortable with.”
Designing for real women has also been a key factor to Black Halo’s
success.
“The price tag is around $350 to $400. Our dresses are a great wardrobe
investment because you can change out the belt or dress it up or down with
different accessories,” Berman adds. “And our whole line is made in Los
Angeles. It’s very popular to be made in America now but we have been
making everything in Los Angeles since the day we started. For me, it was
the only way we could keep a tight rein on quality control.”
Sticking to clean silhouettes that have asymmetrical draping and a
cinched in waist, Black Halo’s dresses offer women a slimming look. “Our
goal is to make women appear two inches taller and five pounds thinner,”
Berman says. “Every woman that tries one of our dresses on, the idea is for
her to look and feel her best. It’s really important to me to empower women
and for women to feel gorgeous.”

Encore Plus Inc. keeps style-seekers
coming back for more
By Joanie Cox

When it comes to fashion, there’s nothing quite like the hunt. There’s a
sense of pride, lust and accomplishment that comes with chasing designer
accessories.
The smooth, structured lines of an Hermès Kelly bag can bring a haute
couture huntress to her knees--especially when the coveted purse she’s
been after for months pops up at a consignment shop.
Encore Plus, Inc., is a designer retail boutique where the quest for
gorgeous designer goods takes flight the moment you walk in the door.
Owned by fashion-loving friends Chantal Gaudreau and Ayla
Habibi, Encore Plus, Inc., is a store that comes with a standing ovation
from style-lovers seeking gently worn to brand-new designer clothing,
sunglasses, scarves, gowns, wallets, shoes, jewelry, bags, pet wear and
more.
Located on East Palmetto Park Road, the store displays a table at its
entrance covered with Chanel, Christian Louboutin and Fendi shoes.
A section in the back of the store features gowns by Lanvin, Vicky Tiel
and Carolina Herrera.
couture in store: Label-loving fashionistas will rejoice in the incredible collection of designer shoes at Encore Plus Inc. Lindsay Moore
You’ll also find cases of jewelry, Tiffany & Co. sunglasses and an
endless sea of dazzling designer handbags, such as limited edition
runway Louis Vuitton bags, Hermès Kelly bags, Jimmy Choo bags, Nancy
Gonzalez bags, Christian Dior bags, Tod’s bags and more.
The store specifically caters to women but will occasionally stock men’s
style staples such as Louis Vuitton briefcases, wallets and belts. The
occasional Hermès tie also makes its way into the store.
The shop even gets couture diaper bags occasionally, which is a big
score for the status-conscious mommy.
“We opened the store together three years ago in 2009, and we knew
each other a long time before we started the business,” says Gaudreau.
“We were located in Deerfield Beach at the time. The store was less than
half the size we have now. It was a good way to start, because the store
was small and we were able to learn the business. It’s 50/50 when you
consign. The only exceptions are brands such as Hermès and exquisite
high-end runway pieces or limited edition items.”
While the store stocks hundreds of various designer goods, Chanel and Louis
Vuitton are the most sought-after designer pieces at the store.
“When people come here, they get more of a boutique feel,” Gaudreau
explains. “It’s much more the feel of a boutique than a consignment store.
It doesn’t smell like a consignment store, and many customers immediately
comment on that when they walk in. We’re very picky about what we have here,
too. If it doesn’t pass our test, we don’t take it.”
Not every designer item makes the cut to get picked up by the store. “We’re
very select on the pieces and designers we carry. The pieces have to be very
clean,” Habibi emphasizes. “Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Valentino, Lanvin,
Roberto Cavalli--these are all brands that do very well for us. We also do very
well with Pucci and Missoni. For Pucci, we have to call people because there’s
always a list of shoppers who want Pucci pieces. We also carry a lot of St. John,
which is very popular. We have a nice selection of St. John.”
With so many fashion-loving women in the surrounding cities, the
consignment shop often gets items with the original tags still on them. And
there are ongoing sales in the back of the boutique, where you can find some
spectacular end-of- season savings of 50-65 percent off.
The duo also contacts clients who have expressed an interest in certain
designer items. “We have a black book that contains a wish list of items from
our clients,” says Habibi, who adores Hermès accessories. “If a client is looking
for a particular item and we get the item in or something from that designer in,
we call them.”
One of the most unique services Encore Plus Inc. offers is on-the-spot
alterations. “We also offer alterations right here in the back of the store,” says
Gaudreau, who is a big fan of Givenchy’s designs. “It’s a wonderful feature
for our consignors and shoppers. If a consignor comes in and has a piece of a
Chanel with a loose button, she can quickly fix it here so she doesn’t have to go
somewhere to fix it. It’s more convenient for all of us.”
Encore Plus Inc. is located at 281 E. Palmetto Park Road in Boca Raton.

Well Red: Rosso Italia and Red The Steakhouse
bring contemporary dining options to Boca
the food dude: Brad Friedlander, owner of Rosso Italia in Boca Raton.

Rosso Italia and Red The Steakhouse opened simultaneously in April
at The Wyndham in Boca Raton. “It seemed like a good opportunity,”
says Brad Friedlander, president and CEO of Red Restaurant Group.
“Boca wasn’t really our agenda. We were more looking to go to D.C., but
the opportunity presented itself. In Cleveland, I have two restaurants
next to each other just like here and it’s very successful. When I saw
the restaurant here and storage room and realized I could build two
restaurants, that was the clincher for me.”
Red The Steakhouse has been named one of the Top 10 Best
Steakhouses in the country, received numerous accolades from Esquire
Magazine and Playboy and its Miami Beach location has had a revolving
door of celebrity diners, including Michael Jordan, Rosie O’Donnell,
Tom Cruise, Mary J. Blige, Donald Sutherland and Russell Brand. “It is
the only truly contemporary steakhouse in the country, serving serious
food,” says Friedlander, whose restaurant reputation in Cleveland has
resulted in a long line of celebrated chefs, such as Rick Bayless and
Michael Symon.
“We don’t just have line cooks in our kitchen; these are culinary
graduates,” Friedlander says. “Everything we do here is from scratch. We
do everything ourselves, from our dressings to distilling our own vanilla
at one point. We try to buy local when we can. Red serves certified black
angus prime beef.”
The concept Friedlander was going for with Red The Steakhouse was
based on a short question: What would Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank
Sinatra want to eat?
“I grew up in the ‘50s eating stuffed clams and steak,” Friedlander
reminisces. “It’s a simple concept, but we took it to the next level and it
doesn’t have the typical look of a steak house.”
A self-described foodie, Friedlander says he’s enamored with great
cuisine.
“I love food. You don’t really meet people who are as passionate about
food as me,” Friedlander says. “My partners are also real foodies. We’ll
drive six hours out of our way just to have a taco. There’s nothing we
won’t do when we have a craving for something.”
Friedlander’s love affair with food began when he was just a child. “My
father was in the concession business in Cleveland Stadium for about 50
years. He was referred to as the ‘Wiener Czar of Cleveland.’ And I would
refer to myself as the second-born son of the Wiener Czar,” Friedlander
laughs. “My mother was a phenomenal cook. We never just sat down to
dinner. Every night we sat down to appetizers and a wonderful meal.”
With a deep, lifelong love for Italian food, opening a contemporary
Italian restaurant was something Friedlander always hoped to do.
“We wanted to do our take on an Italian restaurant and create a more
contemporary atmosphere,” Friedlander says of his Neapolitan-style
restaurant.
Some of Friedlander’s favorite dishes at Rosso Italia are the chopped
salad, artichokes, veal Milanese and Bolognese pasta. At Red The
Steakhouse, he can’t resist a juicy rib eye. “I’m a rib eye person when it
comes to steak,” Friedlander adds. “The tater tots are great, as well as our
creamed corn. I also like the New York Strip and I love the Chop Chop

salad. It’s a salad with anchovies, cucumber, tomatoes and feta cheese. I
have that salad almost every day – that’s how much I like it.”
Rosso Italia and Red The Steakhouse pride themselves on providing
customers with the freshest ingredients possible. “Rosso is a step outside
the box. It’s real Italian cooking in the way that it should be done – farm
to table,” says Jarod Higgins, executive Chef of Rosso Italia and Red
The Steakhouse. “On the Red side, it’s the same thing – from-scratch
cooking. You’re tasting beef the way beef it is supposed to taste. You can
definitely tell when you try our beef; it’s unlike any other you’ve tried.
Our cows are grain fed. They’re free range and they’re pampered cattle.
It shows in the beef. Farms are starting to get the recognition they
need. South Florida is a great place for local farms. Local produce and
vegetables are important. We have so many beautiful farms here.”
Higgins, who has been in Boca since the launch of both restaurants,
is proud to offer diners some of the hardest-to-get beef in the business.
“One of the major focuses at Red The Steakhouse is our certified angus
prime beef,” Higgins says. “We get the top 1.5 percent that’s cut by
Buckhead Beef. It’s sent to us. Our beef is our showcase piece and we do
everything from scratch, including our mayonnaise, our ranch dressing
to our stocks, creams and sauces. It sets us apart from a lot of other
places. We don’t use anything frozen or prepackaged sauces or items.
Everything down to our demi-glace we make.”
As for Rosso Italia, Higgins says it’s an Italian concept you won’t find
in many other places. “We’re not serving that mainstream Italian food
with huge portions of chicken parm. We do serve chicken parm, but we
allow you to organize your own meal instead of saying here’s your parm
and pasta,” Higgins explains. “We serve artisan cheeses imported from
Italy. We’re a step and cut above the rest of what you’ll find around here.”
With two South Florida locations and a third Red The Steakhouse
opening in Cleveland next year, Friedlander loves the challenges and
people a new restaurant brings.
“These restaurants are different than all the restaurants in Boca,”
Friedlander says. “I finally added a baked potato to the menu, but that’s
as far as I’m going. We are not your ordinary group of restaurants. We’re
here for the people who really like food. And the people who really like
food will find us and recognize the difference.”

Located across from iPic in Mizner Park, Yard House is buzzing with a
beer savvy crowd. With restaurants all over America and locally in Palm
Beach Gardens, Coral Gables and Hallandale Beach, Yard House opened
its Boca Raton location June 3.
“We have 140 handles of beer. Some of them are repeated,” says Matt
Tomas, general manager of Yard House Boca. “We carry 128 different
beers, and we have four different pumpkin beers right now as well as a
pumpkin cider. We’re excited about that. We have the Shipyard Smashed
Pumpkin in bottles. Pumking is also really popular.”
Whether you’re a seasoned beer lover or just getting acquainted with
brewskis, Yard House has some suggestions for whatever ales you.
“We have two beer samplers. We offer a traditional six-pack sampler
and a Belgian six-pack sampler,” Tomas explains. “And the chalkboard
series is always available. It’s a rotation of five different bottle beers and
five different draft beers. These are beers that come in a very limited
supply. It allows us to get some small batch microbrews like Dogfish 120
Minute IPA. We could have it a few weeks or sell out of it in a day or two.
The five choices rotate every six months. The bottles are typically the
750 milliliter bottle.”
While Yard House was clearly a new addition to the Boca area, avid
beer drinkers already familiar with the Palm Beach Gardens and
Hallandale locations have been packing the generous bar space at the
Boca Raton Yard House for several months.
“It’s been very busy here, and we’ve been pleasantly surprised with the
business,” Tomas says. “Boca already had a good base of craft beer people.
Delray has good beer offerings, so there were already a lot of people
knowledgeable about great beer in the area. Sometimes we go into a
market where nobody is really familiar with beer and we’re selling a lot of

Bud Light, Coors Light and Miller Light.”
Tomas is also impressed with the healthy amount of wine drinkers
flocking to the Boca Yard House. “We also sell a high percentage of wine
here in comparison to other locations I’ve worked at,” Tomas says. “This
is the ninth Yard House I’ve worked in. There’s more wine here because of
the clientele here.”
Tomas started his career with Yard House opening a location in Kansas
City. Then he continued his knowledge about beer and the restaurant
business launching Yard Houses in Arizona, California and Nevada.
“The client base changes a lot from city to city even within the same
state,” Tomas says. “We still like to offer consistencies in the menus and
beer selections, though.”
Serving American-fusion cuisine, Yard House is also home to some
decadent dishes and lighter bites. You can feast on anything from Seared
Ahi Sashimi to New York Steak Salad to a Blue Crab Cake Hoagie.
With more than 100 beers to choose from, Tomas, like many of his
customers, has a favorite. “It depends on the weather and what day of the
week it is. My favorite right now is the Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot. It’s
from Pennsylvania,” he says.
“We don’t brew any of our own beer here, but we do have a Yard House
label beer, which we brew in Belgium.”
For an avid beer lover such as Tomas, running the Yard House
definitely has its perks, especially when it comes to consumer education.
“I absolutely love beer, and one of the best parts of working here is
interacting with people and talking people into trying new beers and
seeing them progress,” Tomas says. “You build regulars at the bar and
watch them start out with Bud Light and move on to Kronenbourg and
other great beers. It’s fun to watch people do that and watch the team
members who work here learn about beer. As people work for Yard House,
they become beer lovers very quickly. And it’s great to be part of such a
fast-growing company. We’re opening Yard Houses all over the world.”
It’s nice to know the brand has finally established itself in South
Florida. Welcome to Downtown Boca Yard House, we’ve been waiting for
you.
