A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
Dear Friends:
It is with great pleasure that I join with all of you in honoring Jolene Boden and Anna Matathias at the
Journal Dinner Dance. Our annual Journal Dinner Dance is an opportunity to remind ourselves of what is
important about our congregation and what makes us a community. It is a celebration of the people, values
and ideals that make the Oceanside Jewish Center unique.
It is people like Jolene and Anna who make OJC special. Jolene Boden, whose commitment to Conservative
Judaism is even apparent in her email address – [email protected], is deeply committed to the values and
ideals that make our movement a dynamic part of American Jewish life. She continues to strengthen our
congregation after her tenure as president and the Jewish community by serving the needs of the elderly on
Long Island. Anna, who brings her Greek-Jewish heritage to our congregation, inspires our young people
with her love of the Jewish tradition and the warmth and goodness she shares with her students. Every child
who has been a student in her classes over the years has wonderful memories of Anna’s class.
Someone once asked how you grow a synagogue. And the answer they were given was, “Yidl by Yidl!”
There is a lot of truth in that statement. By inviting more people beneath the wings of God’s presence and
by not only teaching but exemplifying Jewish values we can open the doors of our congregation to the
larger Jewish community. Membership alone should not be our goal, however. Our goal is to build a
vibrant, active and self empowered Jewish community in which each person can find meaning in Judaism
and depth in their lives. We come here to discover how the study of Torah can open our eyes and enrich
our lives. Worship can bring joy and purpose to our daily existence. Kindness and community are a means
of building a better world for everyone.
It all begins here. I believe that we have something special to share with others, but the first step must be to
discover that legacy for ourselves. I hope, in the year ahead, we can learn from the example set by Jolene
and Anna and that we can make a special place for Judaism in our lives.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear Friends, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you who attended this evening’s gala event, honoring Jolene
Boden and Anna Matathias and thank everyone for contributing so generously towards this electronic memento.
It is quite befitting that this year’s Journal Dinner Dance, honoring two women of distinction in our
congregation, occurs on Rosh Chodesh. Rosh Chodesh has long been recognized as a women's holiday. In the
Talmud it is noted that women are exempt from work on Rosh Chodesh. Rashi’s commentary outlines the
activities from which they may refrain: spinning, weaving, and sewing, because these are the skills which women
so enthusiastically contributed to the building of the Tabernacle. But why do women merit a special holiday
once a month? A Midrash explains that in the incident of the Golden Calf, the women refused to relinquish
their earrings to the men who were building the calf. As a reward, G-d gave them an extra holy day each month,
free from work. It is also customary to wear new clothing on Rosh Chodesh, in celebration of the day's special
character.
Firstly, I’m glad to see that both Jolene and Anna have abstained from their chores of spinning, weaving and
sewing, to join us in this wonderful celebration. Secondly, I’m sure that Arthur and Asher assisted in the Minhag
of providing new garments for their elegant spouses. Gentlemen, thank you!
Jolene’s and Anna’s careers positively affect society on opposite sides of the age spectrum. The timeline of life is
evident in expressing our appreciation to both individuals.
Anna’s devotion to educating the young, as noted by her tenure with our Religious School, lays the foundation for
our children to carry them on into adulthood. Anna’s keen ability to stimulate the students ensconced in learning
is a wonderful and special attribute. It is with sincere gratitude that we thank her for her past involvement at
OJC and look forward to her continued presence in our community along with Asher in good health.
On the flip side, Jolene has dedicated and embedded herself in the profession of assisting those at the advanced
stage of life. Moving on in age creates many challenges for the individual themselves as well as the caregivers
responsible for providing support and protecting their rights. Jolene skillfully demonstrates the coordination and
organization required to connect them to the resources available in prolonging an active life. Those qualities and
talents along with her USY passion allowed Jolene to aptly fill the position of presidency at OJC. There is no
doubt that Jolene and Arthur will remain active OJC participants in the years ahead.
Mazel Tov to both ladies and it is with pride that we welcome their families and friends who have joined in this
most deserving celebration.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the chair people and committee of this evening’s festivities.
The success of tonight’s special event is a culmination of many hours of hard work and perseverance.

A MESSAGE FROM THE JOURNAL DINNER-DANCE COMMITTEE
It gives us great pleasure to honor two wonderful ladies tonight. Jolene Boden is our
immediate Past President, whose leadership has been an inspiration to our entire
congregation. For many years, Anna Matathias has instructed our children and helped them
to learn the insights and beauty of our religion. In different ways, they have made Beth
Shalom/Oceanside Jewish Center a better synagogue. We owe both of them a debt of
gratitude and hope that they will continue “L’dor V’Dor” from generation to generation.
We would like to thank all of you have supported us, as well as the members of our committee
for everything that they have done.

LEADERSHIP HONOREE
Beth Shalom/Oceanside Jewish Center is proud to honor Jolene Boden.
Jolene was born in the Bronx, NY. Her family was a traditional Jewish
family with emphasis put on major holidays and Jewish Identity. It was her
immediate and extended family that taught her the importance of
tradition and family in one’s life.
Jolene’s family moved to Woodmere, Long Island when she was 14 and
that is where the seeds for her Jewish passion were planted. Her parents
joined a Conservative Synagogue and became active members of the
temple. At 15, Jolene joined USY and she began the process of changing
her life. She participated in USY on Wheels, a summer teen program
across the country, at the age of 16. During that summer she learned to
read Hebrew and began her Jewish Learning. Following that pivotal
experience in her life, Jolene went on to participate in all USY summer
programs and to lead a few as well. She became a regional officer and a
member of the national board of USY during her high school years. Jolene Boden

The experiences she had in USY changed the course of her future. It is because of the passion for
Jewish life, and the social workers she met who were working in the organization, that Jolene chose to
become a social worker. She attended Yeshiva University, Wurzweiller School of Social Work. Jolene
worked at a nursing home for 4 years, where she met her wonderful husband, Arthur. She has worked
in the Jewish community both at JCH of Bensonhurst and for the last 12 years at JASA (Jewish
Association for Services for the Aged) serving the geriatric population. “The apple does not fall far from the tree” as they say. Jolene’s parents met volunteering for UJA and
Jolene has continued in their footsteps in her volunteer activities. She was a charter member of the
Shira group of Brooklyn Hadassah in Sheepshead Bay and has held numerous offices in Oceanside
Hadassah including the presidency of the Bat Yam Group. Jolene and Arthur moved to Oceanside in 1988. Jolene did not waste any time making OJC her
family’s home away from home. Her 2 daughters, Eren (25) and Mara (22), attended Nursery School,
Religious School and Hebrew High School at OJC. Jolene joined the school board shortly after coming
to OJC and then moved on to be a trustee on the OJC Board of Directors. She served in various
positions as an officer of the synagogue, culminating in her presidency, from 2007-2009.
Jolene and Arthur are proud of their 2 daughters. Eren is living in Maryland where she is working in
the deaf community and Mara has graduated from Binghamton University, hoping to be a guidance
counselor.
Jolene is also extremely thankful to her supportive and loving husband. He has allowed her to pursue
her passion for Judaism and has come along for the ride in making OJC a second home in their lives.
May Jolene and her Mishpacha continue to go from strength to strength.
OUTSTANDING SERVICE HONOREE
It gives us great pleasure to honor Anna Matathias. Anna was born in
Volos, Greece on November 14th, 1950. Intending to make “Aliyah” to
Israel, she attended Haifa University in 1969. A year later, she met Asher,
whom she wed after a whirlwind courtship. They emigrated to the United
States in 1970. During the 1980’s, Anna enrolled in various classes offered by the
Continuing Adult Education programs of the Lawrence-Woodmere
school district.
In the 1990’s, she attended classes at the Jewish
Theological Seminary, using her talents in Greek, English, Hebrew and
reading/writing in French.

She held different positions at HANC, Temple Gates of Zion in Valley
Outstanding Service
Stream, Congregation Sons of Israel in Woodmere and the Sephardic
Honoree
Temple in Cedarhurst. Fifteen years ago, Anna commenced the ongoing
pleasure of teaching at the Oceanside Jewish Center Religious School. Anna has also been an instructor for Adult Bat Mitzvah classes, tutored in Hebrew and Prayer Book
proficiency, led Junior Congregation and was a librarian at the Sephardic Temple. Her volunteer work
is quite impressive and includes Vice President of Hadassah, past Executive Director of the Five
Towns Jewish Council, the longest tenured Sisterhood President of the Sephardic Temple, amongst
many other achievements.
Anna and Asher have resided in Woodmere since 1976. They are the proud parents of their three
daughters and sons-in-laws, Miriam and Bradley Herman, Joy and Peri Avitan and Sara and Lee-Lev
Thayer. They have five grandchildren: Ava Gwen, Jacob Stanley, Simon Max, Raquel and Jacqueline
Hannah.
Anna has told us: “As much as I am blessed, I am humbled by your ample expressions of support,
encouragement and confidence as this testimonial Dinner Dance Journal dramatically manifests. As I
extend my appreciation and gratitude to Rabbi, Officers, Trustees and Members of the Congregation,
it is with gladness that I also warmly congratulate Jolene Boden, with whom I share this magical
evening. May we always go forth together, laboring in harness to advance the welfare of our precious
children and synagogue!” Hazak, Hazak!

Dear Jolene
Our relationship began at OJC which blossomed while
hiking, climbing and forging the great forests, mountains,
lakes and rivers of our great nation. While communing with
nature and taking in the natural beauty with lots of laughter
our conversations often turned to deep discussions about
values and the true meaning of life. The meaning of
friendship and what it means to be a good friend was
always a topic we discussed. On this special night, the
