SCA SATURDAY SERIES FALL 2016
Class dates: September 24, October 15, 22, 29, November 5, 19, December 3, 10
Welcome to the Fall 2016 SCA Saturday Series enrichment program! Saturday Series is open to all Manhasset School District residents,
Kindergarten through Grade 6. All classes will be held at Shelter Rock Elementary School.
Classes are $150 with additional fees on certain classes. Checks are payable to: Manhasset SCA.

**Musical Theater is $400. ONLINE/MAIL IN for this class are not accepted. In-person registration is mandatory. Sixth graders are given
registration preference and lower grades will be cut (starting with 3rd graders) if registration is over capacity. Anyone interested in Musical Theater
needs to be present on September 14th, 6:45pm at the MANHASSET PUBLIC LIBRARY.
ACROBATICS: A non-apparatus approach to gymnasticstumbling, walkovers, handsprings, and cartwheels are some
the activities that kids will love.
Grades K-3: 9:45-10:45
ALL SPORTS: Have fun playing Nerf football; whiffle ball, line
soccer, kickball, basketball, and deck hockey.

ART & CREATIVITY CLUB: This adaptive art class is fun for
all kids who love to build, paint, model and get creative.
Different projects each week: including masks, clay, painting
and more. Co-Sponsored by Manhasset SEPTA. Class size is
limited.
Grades 1 – 6: 10:55-11:55
ARTS & CRAFTS: Create original artwork using a variety of
art materials and found objects. The children will create
seasonal crafts to take home.
Grades K-3: 9:45-10:45
CAKE DECORATING: Decorate cakes, cookies and cupcakes.
Have fun with fondant, and learn how to work with pastry
bags to create rosettes, leaves, and other designs. Bring home
yummy treats! See important note on the reverse side.

CHESSMATES: A grandmaster coach from LI Chess
Mates® will improve the game of first time to experienced
chess players. Have fun while improving problem solving
and logical reasoning skills.

CREATIVE PAINTING: The instructor who brought us the
popular Krafty Kids now offers a painting class! She will
teach painting on various objects, such as glass. She will also
teach painting with watercolors.

NEW! ELECTRONIC GAME DESIGN – ALIEN INVASION:
Create your own version of an invader defense game. Use
Clickteam fusion 2.5 to bring our storyboard to life. At the
end of the class, students take home a copy of the game they
create. Grades 3-6: 9:45-10:45 Additional Fee: $40
JUNIOR CHEFS: Learn how to cook and bake. Create
macaroni and cheese, bread, pops, treats and more. With a
little bit of math and science, these young chefs will create
some really great food. Please see important note on the
reverse regarding allergies. Additional fee: $40.

JR CHEMICAL ENGINEERING: Introduce our youngest
engineers to fundamental concepts of solids, liquids, and
solutions. Students investigate the properties of several crazy
concoctions and make their own samples of bubbles, play
dough, flub and more.

NEW! JR. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING: Design, create,
test and refine basic electronics and circuits! Students
experiment with Snap Circuits to discover the capabilities of
major electronic components. Students will also build a
flashlight and build a Magnetic Levitation vehicle.

NEW! JR. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, Let’s Make
Toys!: Introduce our youngest engineers to concepts of
energy, materials, movement. Students will construct toys
such as magical boomerang cans, whirligigs & more.

JUNIOR SCIENTISTS: Science made fun and exciting through
engaging demonstrations and experiments with instructors from
the Science Museum of Long Island! Take home projects to show
off your new scientific knowledge to friends and family.

KRAFTY KIDS: Create original artwork using a variety of art
materials and found objects. The children will create a winter
snow scape and many other seasonal crafts. Taught by a
Saturday Series favorite – Gloria Gerba!

NEW! LEGO ROBOTICS: Learn the basics of designing,
programming and controlling a fully functional robot. Students
will learn the sequence of communication between the robot,
and the programmer by analyzing data using the robot’s sensors.

MAGIC TRICKS I: Learn the exciting secrets of magic and
amaze everyone with fun-to-learn tricks using simple math,
coins and everyday items. Your friends and family will be
astounded and left wondering “How did (s)he do that?”

MAGIC TRICKS II: If you like performing magic tricks, then
you’ll love this class. Learn how to read minds and perform
mind-boggling illusions that will amaze.

MANHASSET IDOL: Enrich your voice, have fun and build
confidence while learning the proper technique for singing
songs from Broadway to pop. Learn the Bel Canto technique
with Claudia Wang. Performance on last day of class.

MUSICAL THEATRE** – ALADDIN:
Registration will be on September 14th: Join us on a magic
carpet ride to “a whole new world” with this session’s
performance of Aladdin! All are invited to the final
performance on December 10th. Parents’ participation is
essential! Fee: $400.
Grades 3 – 6: 9:00 – 12:00 (plus extended rehearsal/show times)
NEW! SCRATCH PROGRAMMING: Scratch Video Sensing
allows students to design their own games, art and musical
instruments while exploring coding. Students then test them
by interacting with the program via webcam.
Additional Fee: $40

SENIOR SCIENTISTS: Learn how science touches our everyday
lives. Join the Science Museum of LI in performing experiments
that amaze and astound. From the "magical" power behind
chemistry and physics to the captivating draw of live animals
and gemstones.
Grades 3 – 6: 10:55-11:55
WOODCRAFT: A hands-on class that acquaints boys and girls
with the art of woodworking. Each student will complete a
project where they finish, paint and decorate their own model.
Parent supervision recommended for K – 2 children.

YOGA: Learn the practice of Yoga by a nurturing and
experienced yoga instructor. Yoga can increase childrens’
physical strength, emotional balance and self-confidence. Note:
you must bring your own yoga mat.

Important Note: Junior Chefs & Cake Decorating: If your child has any FOOD ALLERGY, you MUST let the Saturday Series staff know and provide
the appropriate additional information. By enrolling in Junior Chefs, you grant permission to have your child use the small paring knives in food
preparation.
Safety and Security: Please review these safety and security tips with your child.
 Students should never leave the classroom without telling the teacher.
 Parents are responsible for picking up and transferring children to and from class.
 We strongly suggest that you walk your child through their schedule and discuss whether he/she is comfortable on their schedule.
 Pick your child up at the classroom. Never have your child meet you in the parking lot.
 If you are late, we recommend they stay in the class. The teacher will either wait with them or walk them to the main desk.
 Please be alert to weather conditions. In case of inclement weather, where district activities are cancelled, information will be made
available through the District website.
 YOUR ASSISTANCE IN MONITORING CLASSROOMS AND SECURITY HELPS TO MAKE THIS PROGRAM A SUCCESS.
