The Fly Fishers of Davis Presents:
“Fly Fishing Putah Creek”
This month the Fly Fishers of Davis will hear from Putah Creek guide, Jordan Romney, who has
the uncanny knack for getting his clients hooked up on fish, despite the fishery being one of the
more challenging in the state. Jordan will share with us some of the lessons learned from his
years of experience fishing Putah Creek After this presentation you will be pumped up on fishing
it.
Jordan grew up just minutes from
Putah Creek in the small town of
Winters fishing the rivers and
lakes of Northern California.
While attending college at
California State University Chico
he spent as much time waist deep
in rivers as he did in the
classroom. After college he moved
to North Lake Tahoe to challenge
himself on the beautiful streams
and lakes the Sierra’s had to offer.
In 2009 he decided to turn his
passion into a career. He graduated
from the premier guide school in
the West at the Clearwater Lodge
in 2010. Since graduating he has
been guiding several different
waters in Northern California, and
is one of the lead casting
instructors for the Resort at Squaw
Creek's fly fishing school. He is a
patient and knowledgeable instruction and guide and his future plan is to continue his travels to
far off destinations in pursuit of elusive fish on the fly.

THE PREZ SEZ
By Dana Hooper
Hello Fly Fishers of Davis, I hope everyone has gotten a chance to get out onto the water and enjoy the
wonderful weather we have been having before it gets too hot. This month we have a great local speaker to teach
you the secrets of Putah Creek.
Don’t forget June we do not have a regular meeting but a Picnic in Davis at one of our city parks with great food
and great company. There will be an Evite going out with a list by food category and letter of last name for
which you will need to bring a side dish to our Picnic. Club will provide hamburgers, hotdogs and chicken with
plates and cutlery. Please bring your beverage of choice. Hope to see you there.
Remember the Addled Angler Award will be given out at the Annual Picnic and Award the Bass N Fly Tourney
Winners.
Please respond back to the Evite so that we have a good head count of those that are attending.
See you at the May meeting ,
Dana Hooper
President

FFD Outing: 2nd Annual Delta Bass –n- Fly Tournament
Story by Tom Robinson Photos by FFD Members
Saturday May 2 we had 14 members 7 teams go out on a daunting task to out fish the Bassmasters Elite Series top
150 anglers in the world. Well maybe not exactly but boy did we see many of them running all over the delta at
70 MPH. We fished from 5 am to 4 pm to see which team could catch the largest limit of 5 black bass. After the
Elite Series guys had beaten up the delta for 4 days already it was not an easy road ahead of us but we did seem to
catch quite a few fish even though most were small. Some teams caught a few larger fish and some teams caught
some really small fish. All in all it was a great turn out and everybody had a great safe outing on the California
Delta. Look for next years tourney and maybe you could be the one to take the crown away from 2015
Champions.

FFD Travels: Crowley Lake
Story by Cary Boyden Photos by Members
Jim and Myoko Wright again this year hosted several Club members and an intruder at the Fishcamp at Crowley
Lake. The Club members were Dave Yarborough (accompanied by Barbara), Ron Hedrick, Bill Cox, John
Imsdahl and Cary Boyden. We were joined by Chuck Stielau, who many Club members know, from
Massachusetts. Also along was the 4 legged trio of Patches, Odie and Sam.
The fishing was up and down, in part due to the weather illustrated in the accompanying pictures (mercifully we
were all camped in well insulated trailers) and in part to windy times. What was good, however , was the number
of fish in the 20 inch range. As a change of pace we also landed a few old wet socks (perch), so named for their
absence of fighting qualities. The size of many of the trout and the fact of adequate water, which will not be true
evidently if the drought continues and LA draws the lake down, were both pleasant surprises.
The most consistent spot was Sandy Point in 12-13 feet of water. Alilgator was spotty, and Hilton likewise
inconsistent. Magee did yield a few fish in the several times it was visited. The best flies were the Shaft and
Tiger Midge in size 16. The latter has also proven a go to pattern in Club outings at Baum and Lewiston in size
18.
This is at least the fourth year this or a similar crew has fished there together during the second week of the
season. While in some prior years the fishing and weather have been better, in may ways this was our best
gathering, presumably as we all know the lake and routine better. Looking ahead to next year, we are all hoping
that the drought will relent and LA will not draw the lake down, thereby closing the FishCamp access.
Crowley is a destination worth Club member consideration for both Spring and Fall trips. While buggers are
dragged by some float tubers, chironomids are the most common patterns in the Spring, This is reflective of the
daily clouds of hatching midges. In the Fall the fishing can be spectacular along the weed beds with perch
patterns. Moreover, at least in the Spring, it is easy to combine this trip with a sideswing to Pyramid. Chuck and
Cary have done this the last three years with pretty good success, highlighted by Chuck's 18 one day this year.

FFD Outings: Hat Creek 101
Story by Dana Hooper Photos by Members
Hat Creek was great as always with 18 new fly fishers attending and 25 total members camping on the World
Renown Hat Creek River. The weather, could not have been better with a slight chill in the air in the morning
and warm partly cloudy days. Almost everybody had many opportunities at catching fish and most landing
many. Oh ok I’ll get to the good part we had Gourmet BBQ Burgers piled to the sky with what ever you wanted
on it and the fixings to go along side. My heart felt thanks goes out to my Hat Creek crew for helping with
everybody, Tom Robinson, Kim Petersen Kurt Arens, Eric Kapucinski, Chris Berardi and of course my wife Lyn.
Without them it would have been a tough road ahead. Many new members got to learn the basics of fly fishing
and real on the water experience that hopefully will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
Hat Creek isn’t just about the fishing but the experiences you have with a great group of people.
Thanks
Dana Hooper
