LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
L
adies and gentlemen, on behalf of The Advertising Club of New Orleans and its Board of
Directors, welcome to the 2016 American Advertising Awards. Thank you for joining us tonight as
we honor the best work in our industry and the people who made it happen.
Robert Altman, the director, once said, ”filmmaking is a chance to live many lifetimes.” Advertising, too, offers creators and consumers the same chance to live whatever lives they might want.
Now, more than ever, our industry turns to storytelling as the strongest, most relevant medium for
connecting brands with audiences. Really good movies allow us to bond with characters and see in
them our best selves. If we can do the same with an ad, then, as the saying goes, “our work here is
done.”
Congratulations to all of our winners. Thank you for your work in pushing our industry forward
and selling some great stories.

by the Advertising Club and its members, and we are excited to celebrate with you. We are especially grateful
to the Board of Directors of The Advertising Club of New Orleans and our sponsors.

THE JUDGES
M I K E G U S TA F S O N
Mike has spent over 30 years working at some of the most creative agencies in
the country, including Bozell, The Richards Group, Ruhr, Ackerman McQueen,
Fletcher-Martin and now his own shop, 58 Advertising. As an Art Director /
Creative Director, he has created memorable and effective advertising for clients
such as Chrysler, Target, The Home Depot, Nokia, McDonald’s, Hormel, Take Me
Fishing, Tony’s/Red Baron Pizza, Carnival Cruise Lines, AEP, Toro, Bridgestone
Golf, EZ-GO, University of Florida, MasterCard, Jobes, Leapfrog Toys, Six Flags,
Greased Lightning and the Salvation Army. He has won awards at a myriad of
major ad competitions in the world, including the Grand Effie.
JEANNE SHIELDS
Jeanne is a Creative Director/Writer freelancing in the Chicago area. From 1994
to 2012, she was at DDB Chicago where she was a CD on Aveeno skin, hair and
baby brands, JCPenney, Dairy Management Inc and Unilever beauty brands. For
a few years (2005-2009) Jeanne moved from Chicago to live in Tucson Arizona
(for love and sunshine). During that time Jeanne freelanced for clients directly,
including Canyon Ranch, Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa and Loews Hotels—and
DDB//Chicago.
B E C K Y KO L Z E N
Currently, Becky is freelancing as a CD/AD in the Chicago area. Previously she was
at DDB Chicago from 1995-2012 where she was a CD on McDonalds, JCPenney,
State Farm, and Morton Salt. Prior to joining DDB, Becky worked at agencies in
St. Louis, TBWA/Kerlick Switzer and DMB&B. She received her Bachelor of Fine
Art from the University of Missouri-Columbia. When Becky is not working she
enjoys photography, travel, and cooking.
She has won numerous awards including Communication Arts, International Advertising Festival of New York, London
International Advertising Awards, Webbys, Print Casebooks 9-- The Best in Commercials, and Art Direction Magazine. She
also had the honor of speaking at the Tucson Advertising Federation.

He’s been in mud and muck up to his knees, climbed atop a boat mast and traveled far and wide to tell
clients’ stories. For nearly 30 years, Mike Rainey has pushed the boundaries of ingenuity and imagination
while staying rooted in client ethics, fostering the careers of those around him and serving as a passionate
promoter of the ad industry. Mike’s professional work began in Baton Rouge while earning a degree in
graphic design and photography from LSU. After graduating in 1989, he worked as designer, art director
and creative director for some of New Orleans’ most prominent media and ad agencies over the years,
including Bauerlein Advertising and New Orleans Publishing Group.
Mike’s decision in 1997 to join Zehnder Communications as creative director was a defining moment
and pivotal to the agency’s success. Under his leadership, Zehnder’s creative team has been recognized
for excellence at every level of the industry. More than that, Mike has played a crucial role in the agency’s
cornerstones of success – a fun, imaginative environment for employees, creative work focused on clients’
objectives and maintaining the highest ethical standards. Zehnder Communications’ journey to becoming
one of region’s largest ad agencies is linked indelibly on several levels with Mike’s role as creative officer.

Mike’s career has encompassed a long and varied list of industries – banking, biotech, health care, tourism,
and economic development, among others. His clients have been as diverse as Popeyes, The Drake Hotel
in Chicago, Crystal Hot Sauce, Entergy and Visit South Walton, Florida. After the Gulf oil spill in 2010,
the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board asked Zehnder to help revitalize its brand with
a comprehensive ad and social media campaign. The effort successfully reinforced the safety and quality
of Louisiana seafood, eventually garnering national ADDY awards. Twice, Mike was named the Ad Club
of New Orleans’ Ad Person of the Year. Under Mike’s leadership, Zehnder also holds the distinction of
being the only Louisiana agency ever named a national finalist for the American Association of Advertising
Agencies’ O’Toole Award.
While distinguishing himself with creative work in a variety of high-profile industries, some of Mike’s most
passionate projects involve the human condition and social issues. He’s much more likely to talk your
ear off about the causes he’s worked for like efforts in New Orleans to promote the national “STEPS to a
Healthier US” program. One of his proudest accomplishments is Zehnder’s award-winning promotional
work for the Nature Conservancy in Louisiana. The pro bono project was especially dear to Mike, a lifelong
outdoorsman and the son of shrimpers. The creative work required several days of working in the middle
of a swamp and putting together a floating platform along with other specially made equipment.
It sounds flip these days, but throughout his career Mike has never compromised on the quality of creative.
Even more, however, Mike has distinguished himself with his philosophy of pushing “beyond creativity” to
strategic marketing that is straightforward and remains ethically true to the client. He’s worked relentlessly
to instill those values throughout Zehnder’s creative department. He has spent countless hours mentoring
less experienced staff members. He’s always taken time whenever possible over the years to share his insights
and experience to promote the profession and impress upon younger professionals the importance of ethical
and intellectually honest work. He shares Zehnder’s staunch belief in the ideal that, regardless of where
these individuals work, the entire industry ultimately benefits from these principles.
