OUR SCHOOL
History
In 1890, the Hong Kong Government set up the Central School for Girls. When Mr. E.R. Belilios, a
Jewish philanthropist, donated $25,000 for a new building for the Central School for Girls in 1893, a
3-storey building was erected in Hollywood Road and named after Mr. Belilios. In April 1965, the school
was relocated to its present premises in Tin Hau Temple Road. To mark the occasion, a new school
motto – “Climb High, See Wide”, a school song and a new school badge were created.
School Management Committee (SMC)
Since the implementation of school-based management in 1989, school has been given more autonomy
in personnel, financial and other day-to-day administrative matters. Under the leadership of Mr. WAI
Pui-wah PEO(ECP), the SMC met three times during the school year. Members took an active part at
the meetings, demonstrating excellent collaboration and partnership among all stakeholders.
SMC members for 2010/2011 were:

School Development Committee (SDC)
The committee was set up to strengthen communication, to address staff concerns, to motivate teachers
professionally and to facilitate their participation through decision-making.
Team members include Ms HO Fung-ping, Wendy (Principal), Mrs. LAU LEUNG Yvetta Ruth (Assistant
Principal), Mrs. YEUNG KWONG Mong-ha (Assistant Principal), Mrs. CHENG YUEN Wai-hing, Mrs.
LAM CHENG Lai-lai, Mr. KAN Tat-keung, Miss TSE Siu-hung, Ms LAU Man-sze, Candy, Ms WOO
Man-fung, Victoria, Mr. MA Chin-kay, Ms KWONG Kit-ling, Mr. LAM Man-tak, Mrs. TAM WOO Kit-ching
and Mrs. LIU LO Wai-ching.
Regular meetings were conducted in an open and harmonious atmosphere. Matters discussed
included school self-evaluation, school development, academic promotion, student affairs and staff
concerns.
The SDC has proved to be an effective channel of communication between the management and staff.
Shared decision-making has fostered a greater sense of ownership and team spirit.
School Facilities
Our school moved into its present premises more than 40 years ago. And during the past years,
continuous renovation and enhancement work has been done to preserve its unique beauty while
creating extra space for school expansion. The time-worn buildings have not only braved the
harshness of Hong Kong weathers but also witnessed generations of young girls growing up into the
persons they choose to be. With a history of 120 years, the campus of BPS would certainly have many
tales to tell as you walk down memory lane.
In 2008, a large scale project was carried out to upgrade all the classrooms. Now each classroom is
equipped with a computer, network system, a projector and a screen. There is also a smart-looking set
of lockers to maximize space and provide easy storage.
In the past few years, renovation projects have been under way in order to enhance the school
environment and to meet the needs of the NSS. The upgrade of laboratory and special rooms, the
creation of extra classrooms, the resurfacing of playgrounds and the provision of additional storage
space all bear witness to our conviction in creating a facilitative environment for learning and teaching.
What brings us great pleasure and pride is our Green Roof, which is so far the most massive among
Hong Kong schools. Specially designed by landscape architects, it is now a showpiece and a model for
school greening. The fabulous landscape design not only blends naturally with its surroundings,
improves the air quality and enhances the outlook of the otherwise mundane roof but it also provides
heat insulation for the top floor.

The First Staff Development Day was held at the beginning of the term with the theme on personal
wellness. A worker from Yan Chai Hospital was invited to conduct a workshop on stress management
from the perspective of Chinese medicine. In the afternoon, various recreational activities were
arranged and teachers participated keenly. Feedback was positive and many teachers found that
these programmes could help alleviate their stress.
In the Second Staff Development Day, we visited Christian Zheng Sheng College in which we could see
a different sky of learning. Principal Chan introduced the history of the school and through the campus
tour, we had a better understanding of the school and the needs of their students and teachers.
Finally, we had invited the HKEAA to conduct a NSS Assessment Training Workshop on HKDSE
Examinations. Through the talk and interactive discussion, teachers were updated with the latest
development of HKDSE. In the afternoon session, officers from the Fire Department conducted a fire
safety talk for us. With clear explanation and demonstration on the operation of firefighting equipment,
the awareness of the staff on fire safety was enhanced.

OUR LEARNING AND TEACHING
Learning and Teaching
In BPS, students are nurtured to be life-long learners who continuously collaborate to strive for
excellence in their pursuit of knowledge. Their exemplary academic performance does not come as a
coincidence but rather the hard work of a team of dedicated and professional staff who unceasingly learn
to excel and teach to inspire.
Aware of the huge impact of teachers on young people and how values and attitudes could be inculcated
through classroom interactions, our teachers collaborate to deliver the kind of education we pledge to
offer through the following strategies:

To promote the spirit of the school motto – Climb High See Wide

To create opportunities for life-wide learning whereby students acquire knowledge and skills
through experiences and observations

To develop students as self-directed and life-long learners

To encourage students to share knowledge through peer learning

To foster a reflective culture among students

To train students to be critical thinkers with enhanced problem solving skills
Language Education and English Speaking Leagues
Our school has made an important stride forward in Language
Education. To cater for the diverse interests and abilities of our
students, we have been offering modern language courses
since 2008, which would eventually align with the NSS. With the
partnership and full support of the Department of Modern
Languages and Culture of the University of Hong Kong, we are able to
offer modern language courses at S.1 and
eventually leading up to NSS. To develop our students’ global
perspectives, we continue to offer courses in French, Spanish and
Japanese.
In 2010-2011 a new program called the English Speaking Leagues
was introduced to the school. Thanks to the Chairlady of the BOGF,
Mrs Nellie Fong, six very successful and renowned native English
speakers agreed to be volunteers in this program. Their role was to
act as a captain and conduct conversation classes with small groups of
students after school. They included Sir David Akers Jones, former Chief
Secretary of Hong Kong, Sir T.L. Yang, former Chief of Justice, James Blake, Chief
Officer of the KCR, David Dodwell, CEO of Strategic Acces, Anthea
Strickland, Chairperson of the Minerology Society and Helen Seaton,
former shipping merchant and wife of the British Consulate General
Andrew Seaton. 80 students were involved from forms 1 through
to 7. The yearly program culminated in a certificate ceremony
where all of the students and their captains were able to share
their experiences and mingle over a cup of tea.

Learning Outside of Hong Kong
Apart from offering a broad and balanced curriculum, BPS is also
committed to widening students’ exposure and extending their
learning arena outside of the classroom. In 2010-2011, our students
took part in 9 oversea trips to China, Taiwan, Singapore and United
Kingdom.
The most worth-mentioning was our service trip with the Lifeline
Express to Guilin. Students observed how volunteer doctors performed
cataract operations for poor farmers and children in the impoverished
regions of China. They met with the medical personnel, went to the base
hospital and visited the patients recovering at their
homes. Through all these, they could see the selfless
contribution of the medical personnel, helping the
patients out of their miserable conditions. It was such
an eye-opening experience that students have become
more reflective and appreciative of what they have.
In the coming years, we will continue to organize such
life-changing experiences for our students so that they could become responsible
and mature persons.
Support for Student Development
A whole-school approach was adopted to facilitate students’ whole-person development. Pastoral
services encompassing Careers Guidance, Cross-curricular Programmes, Discipline, ECA, Community
Services, Environmental Education, Guidance & Counselling and Moral, Civic and National Education
echoed the school’s genuine commitment in fostering student development. Three periods of Life-wide
Learning in Day 4 afternoon was structured in the timetable which facilitated the implementation of a rich
variety of student-centred activities.
To help students with financial difficulties, funding from the School-based After-school Learning and
Support Programme and the Jockey Club Life-wide Learning Fund was fully utilized to ensure that every
student could have the opportunity to broaden their exposure, explore new frontiers and develop global
perspectives which are essential for young people in the era of changes. Our school has been most
fortunate to have parents and alumni with shared vision and commitment. The Parents-Teachers’
Association (PTA) Education Fund made generous donations of prizes and scholarships, subsidized
ECA activities, upgraded school facilities as well as provided immediate relief to students with
unexpected financial difficulties.
Measures to Cater for Learning Diversity
The diversity of students’ learning ability is addressed through the following ways:

Provision of a broad and balanced curriculum with a wide range of subject choices

Curriculum planning, tailoring and adaptation to cater for diverse abilities

Adoption of collaborative learning strategies to promote peer learning and support

Adaptations to assessment to recognize different abilities

Enhancement and enrichment programmes for the gifted and the less abled students

Deployment of various grants to employ extra teachers and supporting staff

Ethos building to recognize diversity and individual differences

120TH ANNIVERSARY EVENTS
The celebration of the 120th anniversary of the school continued into
2011. The 120th Anniversary Dinner in November 2010 was a
resounding success. With alumni coming back from Canada,
Australia, England and many other countries, there were a total
of 66 tables. They were treated to a performance by 4 alumni
performing a song from the Pirates of Penzance. To give the
participants a memorable evening, the 4 alumni practised for
months and even had costumes made specifically for the
occasion. Former principals and teachers mingled with graduates,
reminiscing about good old times. The night was a night of nostalgia
and fond memories.
For the 120th Anniversary Sports Day in December, the school had the great fortune of having the
former Olympic Table Tennis Gold medalist, Zhang Yi Ning
(張怡寧), as the guest of honour. In addition to presenting the
prizes, her gracious gesture of taking photos with all the students
warmed everyone’s heart at the stadium amidst the cold of
winter.
The Open Days were held in April with many stalls organized
by different clubs and teams. Besides the games and stalls,
the PTA had organized a gala performance, to raise funds for
the school. Modeled after the Tung Wah Charity Show, the
show featured performances by teachers and students as well as
parents. The performers practised hard before the show and their
efforts were rewarded. The response to the Gala Performance was
tremendous with everyone having a wonderful time.
To cap off the celebratory events, there was the 120th Anniversary
Concert ‘Accendere’ held at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium on 18th
July 2011. The concert was a showcase of the music talents
of the school, with performances by the Symphonic Band, the
Symphonic Orchestra, the String Orchestra, the Chinese
Orchestra and the School Choir as well as a mini musical.
Moreover, Queen’s College, Wah Yan College Kowloon and
Ying Wa College showed their support by joining the chorus.
After months of preparation and practice, over 450 teachers,
students and alumni joined hands to stage an enthralling show.
Music is a light joining BPS girls together. Not only was the Concert a
way for them to show their sense of belonging to the school, but also a chance to show the strong sense
of sisterhood fostered throughout the years. That was why there were alumni in all the performances,
be it the Symphonic Orchestra or the Choir. Besides, there was the
BOGA Choir and their conductor, Mrs Jennie Leung, a former music
teacher. Alumni were even present in the mini-musical, helping
to make it exhilarating and dynamic. As the name of the
concert, Accendere, suggests, the concert filled the audience
with warmth and joy.

Annual School Report 2010-2011
MAJOR AREAS OF CONCERN
Major Concern 1: To enhance learning & teaching capacity
1. To nurture students who continuously collaborate to strive for excellence in their pursuit of
knowledge
Achievements and Reflections:

A wide range of life-wide learning activities were organized, ranging from forums, workshops,
camps, talks, drama, visits, interest classes, quiz competitions to community services. Most
students agreed that their horizons were broadened and they gained relevant exposure and
experience. The senior forms were given the choice to arrange one self-directed learning
activity in line with their interests and needs. Participants gave positive feedback for their
active involvement in planning and organizing programmes. The school will continue to
emphasize the provision of interesting and meaningful activities to enhance students’ learning
outcomes.

Cyber learning was successfully promoted as all subject departments had created at least one
online assignment or quiz for students. Most teachers managed to adopt information
technology in teaching and the frequency of uploading learning materials to eClass for student
learning had increased. Students were able to use proper information technology tools in
doing project work. It was encouraging that students demonstrated a safer and more
responsible attitude towards receiving and sharing information on the internet.

The Reading to Learn programmes had been designed on a thematic basis and integrated with
writing tasks, namely ‘Biography Reading’ for S1, ‘Reading through Illustrative Stories and
Books of Life and Art’ for S2, ‘Reading through Magazines’ for S3. Most students enjoyed
reading the variety of books and magazines and completed the assignments with good
performance. In addition, the school had established a ‘Drop Everything and Read’
programme for years to promote independent reading and there was an overall improvement in
the reading atmosphere. It was encouraging to notice that students gradually developed
self-directed learning habits and participated actively in the online tests of the Science and
English Reading Programme.

In most classroom observations, teachers frequently created opportunities for students to
engage in interactive and cooperative activities with their peers. A student-centered pedagogy
would further be promoted to enhance the effectiveness of learning and teaching.
2. To maintain a team of dedicated and professional staff who unceasingly learn to excel and
teach to inspire:
Achievements and Reflections:

This year teachers conducted cross department peer lesson observation and made self-review
through peer discussion. To facilitate the sharing of teaching materials, resource banks were
developed by each subject department in the school intranet. Peer mentoring between
experienced and new teachers as well as sharing best practices and teaching resources would
continue be implemented with fine-tuning.

The S1 project ‘Our Health Our Choice’ was jointly organized by the Departments of Physical
Education, Food and Technology, Music, Visual Arts and Computer Literacy. Students
proposed a healthy diet and designed a set of physical exercise targeted at specific health
18

problems. Some of them composed music in demonstrating movement exercise and
produced a booklet with the use of art and information technology skills. Their projects were
exhibited on School Open Days. Students agreed that it was a good chance for them to
cooperate with others and relate knowledge and concepts gained in different learning areas.
However, the number of lesson periods for cultural subjects was limited and thence subject
teachers needed to give guidance and supervision outside of school hours. Moreover, it was
reflected that the topic seemed too complicated for S1 students.

The Departments of Mathematics, Visual Arts and Physical Education jointly designed a project
on ‘Mathematics in Art, Music, Sports and Daily life’ for S2. Most students demonstrated their
skills in data collection and produced quality projects which were presented on School Open
Days. The projects offered a worthwhile experience for students to explore the applications of
mathematics in different fields.
However, the practical applications of mathematical
knowledge to some fields were beyond students’ conceptual understanding and the project
topics should be carefully chosen.
19
Belilios Public School
Major Concern 2:
Annual School Report 2010-2011
To equip students with knowledge & foster among them a
set of core and sustaining values conducive to the
betterment of their communities.
Achievements and Reflections:

The steering committee closely monitored the progress of the programmes, co-ordinated with
various functional teams and encouraged greater collaboration among them. The programmes
organized aim at fostering students’ whole person development, shaping their attitude and
nurturing them to be caring global citizens.

The Open Day, with the theme ‘Hearth’ to promote the sense of belonging (Home) and care for the
earth (Earth) was organized collaboratively with the Belilios Public School Parents-Teachers
Association and the Student Union. Strong team spirit was exhibited by the Principal Ms. Ho and
the teachers as they presented awesome performances in the fund raising talent show and raised a
sum of $103,462.00. The BPS Parents-Teachers Association volunteers sweated to raise a sum
of $15,317.00 from the sale of cookies. All the funds were donated to the school to update the
facilities and sponsor extra-curricular activities.

To cultivate the core values of compassion, and care the Community Services Unit arranged a wide
spectrum of community services for the students. The launch of the Service on Saturdays (SOS)
for Lau Tak Yung Memorial Primary School in Tuen Mun allowed students and teachers to
collaborate closely to organize activities for the primary students such as guided tours to Hong
Kong. Our girls had a better understanding of students from low-income families and learnt the
need to care for the less fortunate in the community.

Another useful platform for values education is the Life-wide Learning lessons, during which
visits, ,leadership training camps, Environmental Protection Leadership Training Camp, talks,
Inter-class Science Quiz Competition and forums would be arranged to nurture them to be global
citizens and passionate future leaders.

In the past year, students also had the chance to go on study tours to Beijing and Hubei of China,
Singapore, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Germany and participated in the Lifeline Express Tour to
Guilin to widen their frontiers. Such eye-opening experiences definitely widened their exposure,
enhanced their generic skills and made them more mature.

Major Concern 3:
Annual School Report 2010-2011
Prepare for the New Senior Secondary (NSS) Curriculum
NSS curriculum and allocation of subjects

The School-based NSS curriculum was further refined by deleting two electives, namely one
Combined Science (Physics and Biology) and Information and Computer Technology and adding
Visual Arts so as to cater for the needs of students.

In order to cater for learner’s diversity, there are three application periods for students to apply for
the dropping of electives.

Several applications of Applied Learning Programme were processed. The successful applicants
could receive more diversified training according to their interests.

With the allocation of the Diversity Learning Grant, several Gifted Programmes were offered. As a
result, the potentials of some high-achievers were further stretched by attending the courses in
Liberal Studies, Chinese and Mathematics.

Teachers were well-equipped for NSS by attending different NSS training courses run by EDB or
other education institutes.
Liberal Studies curriculum

S1-S3 LS curriculum has been refined with the addition of more related concepts of NSS Liberal
Studies and enquiry of the latest social issues.

With collective efforts, teaching and learning materials for NSS Modules 2, 3 and Module 6 were
effectively tailored.

The effectiveness of collaborative teaching and standardization meetings was obvious and
professional sharing among teachers was recognized.

The first cohort of students have smoothly completed their Independent Enquiry Studies for Liberal
Studies. They reflected that they have learnt to be independent learners and acquired relevant
study skills along the way.
Life-wide Learning

Multifarious programmes and activities were organized in the Life-wide Learning periods.
Self-directed activities were also introduced in which senior form students were given a chance to
organize their own Life-wide learning programmes.
Student Learning Profile

With the introduction of Student Learning Profile, S1- S5 students have bought their i-portfolio
accounts and gradually built up the habit of self-reflection on both their academic and
non-academic studies. This year, S2 and S5 students have uploaded one Chinese and English
Language assignments respectively.

The school-based design of SLP, which consisted of the percentile of Academic Performance, 20
items of OLE, list of awards and a Self-Account, was finalized.
