The mission of Family and Consumer Sciences Education is to prepare students for family life,
work life, and careers in Family and Consumer Sciences Education by providing opportunities to

Session Title: Get the Picture! Using Visual Arts and
Theatre to Prompt Imagination, Critical Thinking and
Writing Skills
Session Description: Tap into your students’ natural
connection to their imaginations! This interactive workshop
uses visual art and theatre games as a leaping off point
into creative writing. The time-tested tenets of journalism
state that every good article should answer readers’
questions regarding who, what, when, where and why. This
workshop will encourage the use of these same paths of
inquiry to expand the perceptions that can add dimension,
honesty, and interest to their writing.
Working in groups, participants will approach visual art
as a theatre artist and ask questions about character,
motivation, idiosyncrasies, history, action, set, and visceral
reaction. The exercises used work well with visual images
pulled from textbooks, newspapers or magazines, and the
internet. Techniques used are adaptable to any grade level
and can be employed for small or large group work and for
individual students.
Packets outlining the theatre techniques employed and
suggestions for the classroom will be available so that
participants can join in fun rather than feel the need to take
notes during the session.

on the importance of ServSafe training for the hospitality

and Personal Finance (6120) to earn the W!SE Financial
Literacy Certification. The test assesses teachers’
knowledge of personal finance topics that are aligned to
state and national standards. Teachers who pass the test
earn a Certification in Personal Finance (CPF) and receive a
CPF certificate.

Organization, FCCLA to be competitive at the state level.
For advancement to regional and national levels:
• Candidate is to be a classroom teacher.
• Contributions and achievements on which the nomination is based should be made within the past 10 years.
• Involvement in Association for Career and Technical Education activities at the regional and/or national level.
• A member of ACTE and VACTE for the past five consecutive years.

model for pre-collegiate recruitment programs. Teacher
Cadet is an innovative, curriculum-based college level
