ShinBi shouldn’t have survived
this long. But he has. How?
Well…
!
TM
News
When, at LAX on February 20,
Shinbi shambled out of his crate,
his SCR Welcome Committee
instantly fell in love. Emaciated
and hairless, he still had a
beautiful attitude and a spring in
his step. SCR Welcomer Bert
Grimm shot a lovely 7-minute
video of the arrival. It’s on
YouTube (“Shinbi the Collie
rescued from the streets of
Korea”). Please watch it (with
hankies handy).
Back in early February, Animal
Rescue Korea asked us (SCR) to
take Kobe, a collie rescued from a
South Korean meat market (yes,
they still eat dogs in Korea).
Under Jana Monji’s direction, we
raised $2,000 for Kobe’s buyout,
neuter and other vet expenses,
plus air cargo to LAX. That’s
when fate intervened. Suddenly,
Kobe’s “temp” fosterer decided to
keep him.
The next day, our vet tested him.
Surprise! He was NOT
“healthy”. He was heartworm
positive, diabetic, infected from
the ticks, and had chronic
hepatitis, AKA liver failure. But
Shin wanted to live -- and prance
and play -- so we decided he
should have the chance, whatever
it took. And yes, in spite of the
donations that have come in, he’s
way over budget. But…well…
he’s worth it.
But in the Pohang City Shelter
there was a collie weighing only
35 pounds and shaved because of
a mass of ticks. He was “Shinbi”,
meaning “miracle”, because that’s
what it would take to save him.
Too frail even to neuter, but
allegedly healthy otherwise. Our
Kobe donors generously let us
trade Kobe $$$ for Shinbi $$$, so
we took a chance and said, “Yes,
we’ll take him and pay to get him
here”. He was on his way…
His "fan club" has sent in lots of
warmth for body and soul -sweaters, coats, t-shirts, even
pajamas. Jana’s started a blog
where you can keep updated on
his progress
(shinbicollie.wordpress.com) .
Meanwhile, Shin’s gained weight,
grown some hair, and is getting
consultant-recommended
treatment to cure his multiple
diseases without killing him in
the process.
!
!
He still has a long road ahead.
But Shin always stays upbeat.
!
He’s now a bona fide house dog,
reveling in the company of the
other collies and cats. Everyone
who meets him loves him, and
vice versa. He’s touched the
hearts of a lot of people in two
countries. And whatever
happens, he’s an inspiration to all
of us in SCR. !

Dandy
Snoop Dog
America's Family Pet Expo
ShinBi
Dandy and Snoop Dog, two of our available dogs, attended The America's Family Pet Expo at the Orange
County fairgrounds in April as both dogs are still looking for their forever homes. They were a big hit, but
being seniors they seem to always get passed up. Dandy is a Collie/Sheltie mix or maybe a purebred oversized
Sheltie while Snoop is most likely a Beagle/Border Collie mix. Both dogs are easy keepers and love people.
Read about them on our website and please consider adding them to your family. Many thanks to the 15 SCR
volunteers who worked the 3 days and brought their wonderful Collie ambassadors.
There’s nothing better than
collie kisses.

are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and

REMINDER! Southland Collie Rescue will be putting out a
fundraising collie calendar through Cafe Press and we need good
quality collie photos. Photos need to be a minimum of 2300 pixels
wide by 1800 pixels tall per the Cafe Press guidelines. You can get the
photo information by right clicking on the photo. It will give you pixel
dimensions and file size. A file size of 3 megabytes or more would be
ideal. I would suggest setting your camera to take the largest photos
possible and send in the photos without cropping or enhancements of
any kind. Please, no cell phone photos unless they can put out photos
that meet the guidelines of 2300 pixels by 1800 pixels and at least 3
megabyte file size. Please include the name of the dog(s).
!Send submissions to - [email protected]
!The calendar should be available late November or early December.
Check the SCR website or the SCR Facebook page. It will be posted
there when the calendar is available.
