"INVESTORS' EDGE" SEMINAR
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15
5:30 PM INVESTORS' EDGE SEMINAR (LIMITED CAPACITY)
7 PM SHARK TANK PITCHES (OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!)
Have you ever considered investing in a start-up? Are you curious
what new business ideas are forming in the Madison area? If so,
we hope you will join us the evening of Thursday, October 15, at
the Madison Club for two special events in one: “Investors’ Edge”
Seminar and the Club’s third Shark Tank-style company pitch event.
INVESTORS' EDGE SEMINAR
Aimed at prospective angel investors as well as current investors
who want to know more, Investors’ Edge is a recurring program
of the Wisconsin Technology Council and its Wisconsin Angel
Network. It gives investors an overview of early stage investing in
Wisconsin and nationally, defines “accredited investor” and other
rules and best practices, and describes Wisconsin’s early stage tax credit program. This portion of the
event is open to high-net-worth individuals. Pre-registration is required for this portion of the evening,
and is free to attendees. This event will fill up quickly and has a limited capacity for 25 people. It will be
immediately followed by presentations by three early stage companies from the Dane County area. The
Investors' Edge Seminar check-in and networking begins at 5:30 PM, with the seminar starting at 6 PM.
The Shark Tank-style event begins at 7 PM. RSVP to the Madison Club: 608-255-4861.
INNOVATION EVENT: SHARK TANK
The Shark Tank-style event will feature three individuals who will pitch
start-up businesses to our "sharks." Listen in as investors ask tough
questions to evaluate each business opportunity, giving you insight on the
criteria used when considering a new venture. This is a state designated
sanctioned event and an exciting and engaging event for those interested
in investment opportunities or who want to support entrepreneurial
ventures and learn more about up and coming entrepreneurs. This event
is free to attend and open to the public. We do ask that you RSVP if you wish to
attend: 608-255-4861, or online.
Are you interested in presenting your start-up venture, or know someone who is? Please email your
executive summary to Becky Snyder at the Madison Club for consideration: [email protected].

MADISON CLUB CHARITABLE FOUNDATION UPDATE
In 2014, the Madison Club Charitable Foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary. During this
anniversary year, the Madison Club Charitable Foundation board took the opportunity to examine the
work of the Foundation and ensure it continued to meet the needs and objectives of its members and
the larger community. Through a professionally coordinated research effort, the board also sought input
from members on potential opportunities for strengthening and growing the Foundation’s capacity
for having a positive community impact. They attempted to gain a better understanding of members’
charitable giving priorities and patterns to ensure the Foundation aligns with those behaviors. And,
through a series of focus groups and follow up discussions, explored ways of creating more direct
opportunities for member engagement in Foundation activities.
Based on the findings of that research, the Foundation board and staff are considering and planning
opportunities for expanding the work of the Foundation to more closely align with members’ interests
and propensity for expanding their community involvement and support.
COMING SOON: EXPERT PANEL SERIES, FOCUS ON THE
ACHIEVEMENT GAP
The Madison Club Charitable Foundation (MCCF), in partnership with the Leadership Greater
Madison Alumni (LGMAA) Council, will be hosting a multi-part panel series at the Madison Club.
With a similar interest as the MCCF in heightening public awareness of and engagement in significant
community issues, the LGMAA is largely known for its 700+ alumni network of community leaders and
for being a “go to” entity for discussing issues of importance.
This series will feature local experts on the topic of education. The series will range from luncheons to
breakfast discussions. The first luncheon will be held this fall and will focus on "Addressing the Racial
Achievement Gap in Education."
Watch future Club communications for additional information on the panel series, dates, and topics.

SIMPSON STREET FREE PRESS
For more than 20 years, the Simpson Street Free Press
(SSFP) has been a frontrunner in the battle against
the achievement gap plaguing our area schools. SSFP’s
free of charge after school program provides rigorous
academic instruction to kids ages 8 – 18 that supports
and enhances their school day experience. Students
receive individualized reading and language arts
instruction through a challenging research and writingbased process, and each child contributes their work
to a published student newspaper. These student writers come from all socioeconomic backgrounds, represent a multitude of races, and have varying degrees
of school success when they start the program, but every single child in the program makes significant
academic progress. This year, 100% of high school seniors who participated in the SSFP program not only
graduated, but will be attending college this fall.

HISTORY CLUB DINNER
COLLECTING THE HISTORY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 6 PM
How did the Wisconsin Historical Society acquire one of the nation’s richest collections on the Civil
Rights Movement in the United States during the 1960s? In a presentation entitled “Bold (Not to
Say Crazy): Building a Civil Rights Archive during the 1960s," our guest speaker, Michael Edmonds,
will recount the fascinating story of how the Wisconsin Historical Society successfully employed a
grassroots effort in the 1960s to collect thousands of records, documents and artifacts relating to the
Civil Rights Movement then underway in the United States. The Society deployed graduate history
students to travel throughout the South, often times at great personal risk, to gather materials from
organizations and individuals at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement. Their resourceful and, at
times, courageous efforts to collect “history in the making” enabled the Society to amass one of best
collections in the United States on the Civil Rights movement.
A frequent speaker and prolific author, Mr. Edmonds recently edited Risking Everything: A
Freedom Summer Reader, which documents the 1964 Freedom Summer project, when SNCC and
CORE workers and volunteers went to Mississippi to challenge segregation. Mr. Edmonds designed
a powerful, user-friendly curriculum to help teach middle and high school students the history
of the Civil Rights Movement in Milwaukee and the South. Mr. Edmonds serves as the Deputy
Administrator of Library-Archives at the Wisconsin Historical Society and as the curator of its online
collection of more than 25,000 pages documenting Freedom Summer.
This event is open to all Madison Club members and guests. Cost is $45++ per person for dinner,
including a glass of wine. Please call the Madison Club to make your reservation: 608-255-4861.

Fellow members:
MANAGEMENT STAFF
MARY GAFFNEY-WARD
I am thrilled and honored to serve as your President for the upcoming
year. We have a very capable and energized incoming board and staff,
that I will be privileged to work with. The Madison Club has played an
important role for our family for over thirty years. We have celebrated
many family events at the Club, including our wedding. I feel we are very
lucky to have the Madison Club in our city, and I hope you agree that
the Club is looking beautiful.

Madison is changing, especially downtown. This is exciting and also
challenging for our Club. I will be working with our board, committees and YOU, the members,
on developing, and then executing, a strategic plan for the future of our Club. We have hired
The Plantes Group to assist us in answering the question: Why do we exist and what would
be lost if we ceased to exist?” This plan will address Club facilities, programs and services,
membership, finances and governance. I welcome your input.
We are fortunate to have Mary Gaffney-Ward as our General Manager. She has been with us
for over 14 years. Her dedication and leadership are outstanding and I am confident through this
planning process we will be able to position the Club for a bright future.
