The Papyrus
LifeCycle Concept provides an
integrated corporate solution for
the development,
production and
management of
strategic business
documents.
Concept Outline
Based on this architecture, ISIS has developed the most powerful application
development tools and infrastructure enabling central installation, administration and maintenance for all corporate document applications.
Papyrus provides significant benefits to your organization’s customer service,
marketing, and operations departments, without limiting your document creativity and flexibility. From the designer workstation, to the PC client, to the powerful
processing, workflow and output management features, Papyrus delivers an
integrated software solution and manages the complete document lifecycle.
Papyrus is capable of producing millions of document pages per day on mainframe, UNIX or Windows, as well as interactive editing of personalized business
documents on the customer representative’s notebook PC or through the Web.
It supports all code page systems, including Arabic and Hebrew right-to-left
formatting, DBCS (double byte character set) Japanese, Chinese and Korean
fonts. The developed resources and application codes are stored in the central
library or the version controlled Repository, which is accessible through TCP/IP
from every Papyrus component in the network.
As the resources are printer independent, there is no additional effort required
to use the same document on another system platform than to access the
library.

Product Description
Papyrus Postprocessing/PrintPool and PostCalc add the capability for output
management and postal optimization to the Papyrus Document System.
This functionality is available for z/OS, UNIX, Linux and Windows 2K/XP/2K3/
VISTA/2K8/7. The unique concept of pooling the print based on single documents
replaces the conventional file spooling.
• Develop bundling with Papyrus Designer including index and control
information.
• Converts and manages all output types as page-mode documents in
240/300/600 dpi.
• The Papyrus PostCalc product is postal authorities certified to calculate
postage and optimize print volumes for discounts.
• Provides distribution, re-printing, OMR and barcoding, envelope merging
and splitting.
The bundling, distribution and postal optimization features provide important
opportunities for cost reduction, by reducing the amount of printouts, the
number of envelopes mailed and by optimizing the postage per mail piece by
utilizing available discounts structures.

Bundling can be performed for various
applications, running on different
platforms and times, such as a
customer letter with a bank statement
or insurance policy.
All documents to be processed are
either sent via a queue directory,
FTP, SNA RJE or a z/OS JES submitted
job, will be automatically stored, or
formatted and stored into the Bundling
Pool database with index.
Using customizable programs and DB
control tables, the bundling logic is
completely flexible and extendable.
Use any kind of data source
• mainframe batch lists.
• mainframe online (CICS queues, MQ

• ACIF.
• Any text file format.
Collate and distribute
• Start bundling process timed, automatically, or by user.
• Grouping documents for a user, a
complete department or into one
envelope per customer.
• The grouping can be based on the
input type, the user, or a data content in the document.
• Print OMR and barcode to the collated group of pages.
It should be noted, that in principle,
all document types can be processed,
but the requirement is, that either a
PAGEDEF or a DOCDEF is defined for
the AFP output.

Bundling General
The PrintPool is linked to a Papyrus
DocEXEC installation and can be run on
server platforms or z/OS. The PrintPool
requires an external DB such as DB2,
Oracle, MS-SQL or ODBC which is not
included. Alternatively an ISIS Depot
Node can be used when running a
Papyrus WebRepository.
The complete solution can be linked
with the WebArchive, which enables
user HTML access through the Intranet.
All bundling algorithms are written
in DOCDEF using predefined SQL
functions (external DB PrintPool) or
PQL statements (ISIS Depot Node) and
as such platform independent.
Automatic print job
processing on the server
Using a job control convention,
every print-file passed to the server
is automatically processed. Once the
print layout has been generated with
Papyrus DocEXEC, all the pages of the
document are stored in the PrintPool
and its control variables are stored
in the index. Additionally Papyrus
Repository functions can be used for
the job control.
User defined bundling routines or
Papyrus PostCalc produce so-called
PRINTLISTs which can then be selected
by the user or operator for actual
printing.
The operator and print management
dialogs built on Papyrus WebControl
capabilities can not only be used on the
actual server but also anywhere in the
network using a standard browser or
the Papyrus Desktop.
Once a ZIP or postcode sequenced
PRINT-LIST is requested for printing, it is
passed to Papyrus DocEXEC which then
assembles the pages from the bundling
pool into a printable document,
merges pages for one envelope, assigns
inserts, calculates the postage and
prints the proper OMR code on each
page to control the enveloping.
Any pages destroyed in the enveloping
equipment can be reprinted
automatically on a PCL printer. In the
network, any authorized user with a
browser can view or request reprints on
his local LAN print server.

Product Description
Papyrus Server is binary compatible to the IBM PSF for z/OS Print Service
Facility print functions. It is not only a datastream converter, but manages the
complete print job including all the resources such as fonts, forms, imbedded
images and logos. Papyrus Server provides resource management, distributed
printing to IPDS, IJPDS, PCL and Xerox Metacode, Postscript, FAX, e-mail, PDF
and TIFF services and archive interfaces for optical and microfiche storage.
The Papyrus Server supports the full range of standard AFP formatting
functions from text to image, including PAGEDEF and FORMDEF. It also supports
the functions of the Papyrus DocEXEC statement formatter as an optional
integrated functionality. Papyrus Server can be configured using the Papyrus
WebControl functions of the Papyrus WebRepository for integrated graphical
print and job management.
Papyrus Server can connect to the host via SNA LU6.2 communication on
Windows and AIX, receive output and AFP resources from JES2/3, or send LAN
output to the host. Optionally, it routes output files in ASCII or Xerox Metacode
to the printer port. On other system platforms, jobs can be received via filetransfer protocols or via TCP/IP.

Papyrus Server 7
AFP Print Support
Xerox Metacode Driver
WebControl Interface
The Papyrus Server offers printing of all
AFP applications in the network.
• Printing of AFPDS (LIST3820) and
PAGEDEF applications.
• Uses AFP forms, fonts and logos in
240, 300 or 600 dpi.
• Through Papyrus Host z/OS the
Papyrus Server can receive output
files and the connected resources
from the JES2/3 spool and the PSF
libraries.
• IOCA formats are supported.
• BCOCA barcode structures are emulated with AFP fonts.
• Print output from/to page.
• Papyrus DocEXEC can run integrated
into the Papyrus Server.
• Papyrus WebRepository and Papyrus
WebControl can run integrated with
Papyrus Server.
• Access version controlled
AFP resources in the Papyrus
WebRepository.
The Papyrus Server/Metacode provides
completely seamless conversion of
AFP jobs to Xerox Color Metacode
printers, such as the 4850 and 4890.
No resources need to be generated as
Papyrus Server converts and loads all
fonts and forms on-the-fly.
The Papyrus WebControl is an optional
graphical user interface which
provides print, job, spool and queue
management through any browser or
Papyrus Desktop. This includes user
authorization, depending on role and
privilege, for server access.
The printer is connected to a S/370
channel card or via TCP/IP and no
further features are required. Xerox
output can be routed transparently to
the printer. Throughput depends on
print job complexity and exact printer
model used.
Prerequisites
IPDS Driver
The Papyrus Server/IPDS support
enables the use of IPDS compatible
printers at any speed. With this server,
an unlimited number of printers can be
serviced.
The printers can be driven by S/370
channel connection, using a BARR
PCI Channel card at up to 4.5 MB
data transfer rate. TCP/IP network
addressing for the IPDS printer is also
available.
PCL Driver
The Papyrus Server/PCL configuration
provides support for Hewlett Packard
PCL compatible printers driven at any
speed.
This support can also be used to
generate a Metacode print file which
can be sent to another print spooler or
to a tape for subsequent printing. Full
resource management support.
IJPDS Driver
Papyrus Server/IJPDS supports Kodak
Versamark highlight and full color
printers (IJPDS).
For typical use as a LAN server printer,
any Pentium IV or higher with 512 MB
RAM (1 GB recommended) will provide
PCL conversion speeds of up to 800
pages per minute.
Metacode conversion is more CPU
intensive, but the bottleneck is the
printer interface rather than the server.
IPDS will always be the fastest print
driver on the same server hardware.
PDF Driver
Papyrus Server/PDF available in native
PDF format for document viewing in
the Internet.
Support of PDF/A according to ISO
19005-1 level A (PDF/A-1a) and B
(PDF/A-1b) based on PDF 1.4 defined
by the PDF/A and digital signature.
TIFF Driver
The Papyrus Server/TIFF generates,
from all AFP applications, a TIFF G3 or
G4 file, per page, with index name or
with a separate index file.
Fax Driver
With this server, an unlimited number
of printers can be serviced. The only
limitation is the available number
of printers via the operating system
platform. Direct TCP/IP printer
addressing is available.
The Papyrus Server/Fax can generate
an image FAX file in TIFF format from
the AFPDS document. The FAX details
are extracted from the AFP document
and sent to the standard Fax modem.
Postscript Driver
The Papyrus Server/E-mail allows
sending of different document formats
via SMTP protocol to any mail server as
an attachment.
The Papyrus Server/Postscript
generates a Postscript file to be printed
on various Postscript Printers.
The Papyrus Server on Intel should
always run on a fast processor
to reduce the danger of server
congestion.

Applications
Functions
Many customer oriented businesses
can benefit from using the WebArchive
without changing existing print
applications!
Papyrus WebArchive enables the use
of mainframe and Client/Server mass
produced documents in WWW based
Intranets or the Internet. Supported
input formats are AFP documents or
line-mode files with mixed Xerox DJDE
or AFP controls, SAP R/2, R/3 and any
other format supported by Papyrus
DocEXEC.
Finance and Banks
The WebArchive can be utilized to
distribute customer documents and
bank statements to the branch office
server for collection of the documents
by the customer. Alternatively a central
server can be used.
Insurance companies
Customer folders can be defined on a
number of WebArchive servers which
can be accessed by internal and agent
staff. Documents produced centrally
are stored just as documents produced
by the agent. Any customer query can
be answered immediately. Customer
documents can be printed, faxed or
e-mailed as copy from the original
document file.
The z/OS JES2/3 connected Papyrus
Host component provides transparent
document transfer to the WebArchive
from the print queue. Processing of the
documents can be performed on the
mainframe or the server as required.
The document files are stored in a
customer defined database archive
system or in an Archive-Depot Node
of Papyrus WebRepository on any
platform. For external long-term
archiving, any storage media from
magnetic or optical disk can be used.
Telecommunication and Utility
Companies
Customer billing information is not only
available to the company personnel,
but also to the customer himself via
the Internet. Hyperlinks enable the
company staff to interact with host
transactions via the document directly.
Customer folders can be defined
for documents from a number of
different applications allowing full
Case Management of digitally signed
documents. Alternatively, a search
across a complete database can
be used and kept up-to-date with
incoming documents automatically.
Industry and Engineering Companies
Any document from technical
drawings, parts catalogs and billing
information can be offered to
internal and worldwide access via the
WebArchive.
Company personnel or authorized
external users can access the
WebArchive either directly through
the WebRepository’s built in Portal
engine using customized Papyrus Eye
GUI’s or make use of Papyrus Adapter
and/or TypeManager (e.g. SOAP) to
integrate the WebArchive with other
Web solutions. After user identification
and password verification, the user will
be presented with a list of available
documents from the personal folder or
as a database query result. They can be
selected via hyperlinks for viewing in
AFP, GIF, PDF or TIFF format.

Product Description
The Papyrus WebRepository is a facility using the Papyrus Objects
infrastructure. It is based on the Object Meta System Architecture developed
by ISIS and also using an Objectspace-DB fully managed by the Papyrus
Kernel. User access is available through Papyrus Desktop connected to a
local Kernel (Fat Client) or a Browser communicating with a Papyrus Portal
Node (Thin Client). Papyrus Objects is a Peer-To-Peer Application and Process
Development Environment and requires that each node runs its own Objects
Kernel. Objectspaces are supported on z/OS-USS, AIX, Solaris, HP/Itanium, Linux
and Windows 2K/XP/2K3/VISTA/2K8/7.
Papyrus WebRepository enables control for all document types and for all

ISIS Papyrus Product Information
Functional description
The Papyrus WebRepository is
unique as it does not predefine the
object types made available to the
application. The developer can define
any CLASS definition required and build
an application framework. By means of
defining a state machine for an object,
its behavior for complex business
processes can be defined simply and
executed as business objects in the
Papyrus Objects environment. Objects
are stored in a proprietary compressed
binary format and are usually just a few
kilobytes big, reducing memory, disk
space and bandwidth.
Any kind of resource can be stored
in a binary attribute, enabling the
management of fonts, forms, logos,
source code, executables, XML, HTML
and virtually any other format. By
enabling relationships powerful object
structures can be defined and reduce
the need for a relational database.
The WebRepository can be accessed
through Fat Clients (Papyrus Desktop)
or Thin Clients using a Browser
connected to a Papyrus Portal Node.
The GUI’s are an integral part of the
application design and can be freely
configured with the Papyrus EYE GUI
Designer guaranteeing identical results
for Fat and Thin Clients.
When used in conjunction with the
features of the Papyrus Document

Product Description
Papyrus Server supports the processing of all AFPDS documents and line
print applications using PAGEDEF/FORMDEF and OVERLAYs. Conversion to the
standard high-resolution fax format is used to process the AFP output on any
standard fax modem.
If required, output can be sent directly from JES spool through the Papyrus
Host QFSS task to the Papyrus Server using the same FSS interface as PSF.
This also enables automatic AFP resource management.
The sender's and receiver's names and phone numbers can be extracted from the
list file, the AFPDS text in a document or from IBM ACIF TLE records. The output
is then passed to the modem interface which also offers the user a log facility.
Call retry and error handling are standard Papyrus WebControl functions.

ISIS Papyrus Product Information
Functions
• Papyrus Server/Fax fully supports
AFPDS documents (LIST3820) generated by DCF/Script, ACIF, Papyrus
DocEXEC or any other product.
• Print applications using PAGEDEF/
FORMDEF and OVERLAY with or
without Mixed Mode imbedded IMM,
IDM and IPO AFPDS structured fields
are also fully supported.
• AFP applications are converted to
compressed images in 200 dpi and
then sent to the fax server modem.
Server Interface
Using the standard server interface,
the line data or AFPDS files are sent
by a user utility to the Papyrus Server/
Fax. The user has to take care of the
resources which have to be already
available on the server for conversion
or can be accessed via IP from Papyrus
WebRepository.
z/OS JES 2/3 Interface
To connect the server to the
mainframe, Papyrus Host FSS is an z/OS
started task which utilizes the same FSS
interface to the JES spool as IBM PSF.
The spool files, parameter and all AFP
resources are then sent to the server
automatically. This provides the fax
solution with an AFP printer.
Optional CICS/MQ Series
Interface
• Papyrus Host also offers a CICS
Transient Data Queue or MQ Series interface which can send print
files from a CICS transaction or MQ
request directly.
• Papyrus Server/Fax is connected to
the host using SNA LU6.2 or TCP/IP.
WebControl Interface
The Papyrus WebControl is an optional
graphical user interface which
provides print, job, spool and queue
management through any browser or
Papyrus Desktop. This includes user
authorization, depending on role and
privilege, for server access.
Papyrus Server/Fax
ISDN Fax solution on
Windows
Using an ISDN fax card with 4
controllers having 2 channels each
allows to send up to 8 faxes in parallel.
The ISIS Papyrus FAX / G3 Module was
enhanced to create one SFF (structured
file format) per document which is
then distributed via a queue to one of
the channels of the ISDN fax card. The
solution requires Papyrus Objects.
Configuration
Processing speed is dependent on
the application complexity. Up to 100
pages per minute can be achieved with
a faster processor to support multiple
outbound lines.

text records or using the AFPDS TLE
records inserted by IBM ACIF or other
products like DCF/Script. Optionally,
job control parameters can be used.

Product Description
The Papyrus CD-ROM/DVD Solution offers a dramatic cost advantage, which
increases with the number of remote sites required, when compared to distribution on any other media and a much more simpler implementation than centralized COLD archiving. The conversion, design and indexing of such archive files
for CD-ROM/DVD is executed on a PC server platform. The generated documents
can then be viewed and printed on the local PC and printer with the native
Windows Viewer provided on the generated CD-ROM/DVD to the user. Documents can be searched quickly using the Papyrus Fast Search Index technology.
Another advantage of this solution is the adherence to IBM's document architecture MO:DCA, which enables even long-term re-printing on high-speed
printers on any platform. The architecture also enables the free intermixing of
text, image graphics and electronic forms as needed by the application.

Print Resources
• Design forms and data layout with
the optional Designer feature.
• Index and convert ASCII or EBCDIC
line-data files to AFPDS.
• Write the document, index and
viewer files to the CD-ROM/DVD with
standard products (not supplied).
• Search, view and print the AFPDS
files with the Papyrus Client Viewer.
• Fast Search Index facilitates to
search external index files covering a group of AFP-files and directly
accessing certain pages within these
files in Papyrus Client. The files can

The functionality of Papyrus Client
in combination with the Fast Search
Index are the base for powerful CDROM/DVD solutions.
Processing speed is dependent on the
application complexity.
To properly and safely print or process
AFP output, it is required to use all the
original AFP resources such as forms,
logos and fonts. These resources are
automatically stored to the CD-ROM/
DVD by the generation process and
need to be available on the Papyrus
CD-ROM/DVD PC.
Benefits
A CD-ROM can hold up to 150.000
pages of a document without
compression. An average US Dollar cost
comparison is 1-2 cents per page for
printing, 0.3 cents for Microfiche, 0.07
cents for writable CD-ROM and 0.02 for
1000 pressed CDs.
z/OS JES2/3 Interface
Papyrus Host QFSS z/OS started task
is optionally offered which utilizes the
same FSS interface to the JES spool as
IBM PSF and automatically transfers
spool files, parameters and all AFP
resources.
Standards
• The AFP datastream has been standardized and openly published by
IBM in MO:DCA. ISIS is an IBM Business Partner timely informed by IBM
of upcoming changes.
• Papyrus Server AFP fully supports
AFPDS documents (LIST3820) generated by DCF/Script, ACIF, Papyrus
DocEXEC or any other product.
• PAGEDEF/FORMDEF and OVERLAYs
with or without Mixed Mode imbedded IMM, IDM and IPO AFPDS structured fields are fully supported.
The CD-ROM/DVD writing process
depends on the CD/DVD-Writer.

CD-ROM/DVD Viewing
By using AFP raster or outline fonts on
the CD-ROM/DVD, it is not required
that any special fonts need to be
installed on the PC which displays the
CD-ROM/DVD content with full display
quality.
According to IBM terms and conditions,
IBM's licensed fonts may be transferred
with the output files for the purposes
of backup and services only.
ISIS optionally provides the Papyrus

unlimited distribution on the CD-ROM/
DVD.
In this manner the actual user of the
CD-ROM/DVD has a self contained
solution, which does not require the
purchase or installation of a viewer
component.
The Papyrus Client not only provides
PEL accurate display of the document
but also printing through any printer
driver.
