Hey Plant-men and Plant-sters! It was an exciting and busy period these past
8 weeks and it’s about to get even better with a reminder of all these great
times in your favourite (and only) publication just for Plantjes – the Internodium!
This period we had a board change, two excursions, Klootscheiten, and the
all important Boerenrock evening. A recap of all of these events can be
found in this issue. At some of these social evenings, you may have noticed
several people who normally party on into the wee hours of the night either
limiting their alcohol consumption or even going home early. Hopefully you
haven’t been too hard on them because Reinout, Jasper, Sonja and Els have
good reason for it. While the rest of us are sitting in class, they’ve been
tearing around the country (in the stylish Peugeot Bipper!) to promote the
exciting world of science to high school kids in the Mobile practicals. On the
more serious side, our (former) Education Commissioner, Wietske, has provided us with important information about changes to our study programme
known as Towards Flexibility. As well, if you didn’t hear, the clever and very
hard working Arjan van Zeijl won the Rijk Zwaan Award. This award comes
with some amazing prizes, so if you think you’d like to apply next year you
should definitely read Arjan’s story of how he did it. You will also find a special story about the Reunites day written by one of our reunites! If you’d
like to read about something other than Tiger Woods’ return to golf, then we
think you’re going to enjoy this issue. As always if you have comments, an

Chairman’s Chat
Dear members,
Unfortunately this will be my last Chairman’s chat. Already a year has
past, which consisted out of two parts. First as secretary and in the second
half as chairman. Being in the board was on one hand very busy and time
consuming, but on the other hand one big and valuable experience. It really
enriched my short but intensive student life.
The first half year together with Reinout and Jasper. Where I could learn
the way of organizing board meetings from Reinout and laugh about all the
stupid jokes of Jasper.
The second half year was together with Tom and Jelle. Being in the board
with Jelle was a nice way to stay in touch with the current second years
students. A good help and indicator during the board meetings was Tom. He
always warned when we lost the relevance, importance and focus during the
discussions we had.
Then last but absolutely not least I joined the board for a whole year
together with Els and Wietske. These girls were of absolute high value! They
executed their function like they did nothing else before. Because of Els the
committees were proceeding smoothly, we always had good contact with
the facility desk, we presented ourselves at the opening of the Radix and
gained some money on the family day of the Plant Science Group, and as a
grand final she organized the Reunites day for a big part. With Wietske the
education task of Semper Florens was in good hands. Evaluation lunches, BSc
and MSc graduations and the thesis market were always perfectly organized.
And she paved the way for you regarding Towards Flexibility. I never had to
worry about these subjects, as Els and Wietske always had everything totally
under control. I can not thank them sufficiently.
Writing this last Chairman’s chat means saying goodbye to the board, but
also initiates the last stage of my MSc study here in Wageningen. At this
moment I am finishing my MSc thesis and I will prepare myself to go on
internship to Ethiopia. So on one hand it is saying goodbye, but also saying
hello to new adventures and developments.
I think being a member and even a board member of Semper Florens was a
big adventure which I really enjoyed. Of course I wish the new board and
especially Jelle, as my successor, loads of fun and that they may have the
same feeling of having a great experience.
With Jelle and his board, Semper Florens is in good hands. I wish them all
the luck.

Chairman’s Chat
Dear members,
Spring has arrived! After a cold and long winter we can finally awake from
our hibernation. It is the season of the wheat beers, skating in the evenings,
going to the beach or the Rhine, my birthday, going to college without
wearing a coat, a longer daytime, barbecues, a lot of national holidays,
laying in the grass, beating the Veetelers with scrotum shooting ;-). In short:
All the things I like.
Spring is not only good for me, but for a lot of things, because spring is a
symbol for new things. And new things are good. For most animals this is the
season where genes are passed on to the new generation. Plants grow new
leafs and flowers. Farmers are busy managing their new crops, the Dutch
government gets re-elected and also the board of Semper Florens is new!
On the 23rd of March we had our 25th GMM. The GMM went well and there
were quite a lot of people present (even non-members showed up). So keep
that up. Berend-Jan, Els and Wietske resigned from the board after a year of
hard work. Wiert, Willem-Ties and Rachel are their successors and I’ve got
a feeling that this half year is going to be a good half year. After the GMM
we went to Annie’s pub for our constitution drink. For a fully detailed story
about this I refer to Wiert’s article.
For the next and final period of this year Semper Florens has enough
activities that will help you survive until the big summer holiday starts.
There will be a discussion evening on the 27th of April and of course ‘het
Boerenfeest’ on May 19th. Last but not least, from the 11th until the 13th of
June the SF weekend will take place. And off course you can always come by
and visit us at ‘het Hok’ in the Radix building.

Klootschieten
Kloten van veetelers schieten te kort
We hebben het gedaan!!! Het dappere grassprietje weerstond de moordzuchtige koe! Dinsdag 6 april 2010 gaat in de boeken! Klootschieten 2010
is gewonnen door de Plantjes! Nou ja, in ieder geval door één team…. Hoe
andere plantenteams het hebben gedaan (i.i.g. één gelijkspel en één verlies)
daar hebben we het niet over. Positief blijven!!!
De mooie activiteit klootschieten begon met wachten op veetelers verzamelen in Annies. Daar maakten verschillende zwaargewichten uit de balsemienfamilie hun opwachting. Respect gaat uit naar Roos de Wit, die als enige
vrouwelijke eerstejaars BPW present was. En naar de man van de eerste
meter, de jarige Job Reinout Pennings (3 hoeraatjes). Tijdens het wachten in
Annies kwam er opeens iemand met een heldere ingeving: de camera?! Jaja
de camera, die lag nog op het hok van SF. De eerste teams vertrokken al, dus
Sjaak scheurde à la Ken Block naar het Radix. Weer terug bij Annies kwamen
we erachter dat de batterij op was (misschien een cameracie oprichten?).
The Battle
Het was heerlijk weer, de zon scheen, en de blikjes bier en flessen jägermeister waren nog koud. Om te voorkomen dat ze zouden opwarmen vertrokken gauw het laatste planten- en veetelerteam. De eerste worp van het
laatste plantenteam was vrij klote deed onze overwinning naderen. Met een
ongelofelijke soepelheid en krachtsinspanning, kwam de kloot tegen een
autoband terecht en rolde weer meters naar de startlijn terug……
Het stralende zonnetje en de nog enigszins koude drank deed de prestaties van de teams veel goeds. Zo moest een hond opzij springen (sorry, no
offense) om geen kloot tegen zijn….juist ja....te krijgen. Verder brachten
de kloten bezoekjes aan de ziekte-kweekveldjes hobby-akkers van de
naastliggende moestuintjes. En werd de achterbumper van een auto grondig
getest door een koeienmeid. Nog steeds strooide de zon haar felle stralen
over ons uit, en lag het veld met biologische wintertarwe rogge langs de
route te smachten om vocht. Zo gebeurde het dat Tom en Luuk, twee echte
plantenvrienden, ze van vocht voorzagen in het vooruitzicht van een hogere
opbrengst. Kloot na kloot werd weggesmeten en toen de laatste kloot eindelijk over de finishlijn was gekomen gebeurde er iets vreemds. Was het de
drank? Hadden ze een zonnesteek opgelopen? De veetelers begonnen plotsklaps te juichen en te zingen, elkaar omhelzend. Huh? Ja, maar…wat is de uitslag dan? Wij plantjes hebben 35 keer geworpen en jullie? Euhhhh…36 keer.
Dus…
Bierproeven
Terug in Annies was het even wachten op alle friet. Uitgeput door onze zware
strijd zoektocht naar vermiste kloten waren we erg blij met de voedzame
maaltijd. Nadat iedereen goed had gegeten, en er weer actief aan de bar
werd gehangen, begon de bierproeverij.
Elke leek bierkenner die meedeed kreeg vijf genummerde bekers met bier. In
die bekers zat Grolsch, Hertog Jan, Dommelsch, Bavaria en nog een of ander
goedkoop biermerk. Er werden briefjes uitgedeeld waar je het biermerk bij
het goede nummer moest opschrijven. De echte durfallen maakten ook een
ranglijst van de merken en van de geproefde bieren. Toch klote als je Grolsch op 1 hebt gezet en bij het proeven op 5 eindigt. In ieder geval…2 van de
5 goed was de beste uitslag naar mijn weten. Weer over op de tap en sterke
drank. En wie was er ook al weer jarig? Juist, Reinout. Hoe smaakte de stuiterbal, dubbele boswandeling, ouzo etc.? De dag erna mobiel practicum hè?
Op een gegeven moment hielden de veetelers het voor gezien en gingen ergens anders heen. Tot ziens bij het boerenfeest! Ja, insgelijks veeteler. Tot
ziens bij het boerenfeest, het was gezellig. Inmiddels begon Willem-Ties
ijverig de vloer te zwabberen. Omdat het er niet schoner van was geworden
werd de vloer later toch maar overgedaan.
Wissel in Woeste
Iedereen ging vervolgens op huis aan in de hoop op een goede nachtrust. Nou
ja, iedereen. Tom Hollemans, Wiert Wiertsema, Bart Nijland en ik besloten
nog als delegatie van SF naar de bestuurswissel van Sylvatica (Bos- en Natuurbeheer) in de Woeste Hoeve te gaan. Om toch niet met lege handen hun
voorzitter te feliciteren offerden we een flesje Bavaria op. Met een mooi
verhaal (pluspunten daarvoor) overhandigde Wiert vervolgens het flesje.
Onder de indruk van het begeleidende verhaal leek hij best blij met zijn
cadeau. Iets minder blij was een meisje van hun bestuur die we later de
hand schudden. Zij herinnerde zich nog levendig haar cadeau van de vorige
wissel van Sylvatica. Namelijk een zak vol met bladeren waar een cadeau in
zou zitten, wat niet zo was. Ze was er nog steeds niet overheen dat ze de
vorige keer voor niets heel de zak heeft doorgespit op zoek naar een cadeau.
Door andere personen werd er een beetje geprikkeld gereageerd op ons.
Andere verenigingen waren er waarschijnlijk veel eerder dan ons, aangezien wij er rond 01.30 pas waren. Was dat de reden? Of toch omdat Tom een
Ajacied is wij heel vrolijk waren na het klootschieten? Ondanks dat hebben
wij SF zo goed mogelijk vertegenwoordigd. Nadat we ons gratis bier op hadden besloten Bart, Tom en Wiert te gaan slapen, en ik naar de bunker te
gaan.
Daarmee was deze axi ten einde en was het klootschieten van SF en de
Veetelers een succes te noemen. De laffe borrelaars hebben zeker wat
gemist. Tot ziens allemaal bij het boerenfeest op 19 mei!

Excursion
Excursion Ovata & de Ruiter Seeds
Thursday the 4th of march the new SF excursion came up. The excursion
committee arranged a luxurious van to bring the interested students to the
west of Holland, with this van the ride by itself was already entertaining!
Ovata, located in Bleiswijk, Zuid-Holland was the first company to visit. The
entrance was impressive, Ovata had a new building and even the walls were
decorated with cactuses.
Inside the director explained some details about the business. Ovata is the
biggest cactus grower of Europe! The area for production was 8 hectares of
greenhouse. The new greenhouses have the roof at 9 meters high! The higher
roof helps us to control temperature and humidity explains the director. The
cactus and the other plants in the Crassulaceae family have many different
forms. In the last decades the market has changed. They don’t need so much
variation any more. More and more they focus on fast and easy production.
That means they have a maximum of 10 types of cultivars and a cactus that
can grow from seed to sellable plant in 4 months.
The seeds are transported
to Belgium to geminate.
They have a company
who can do that cheap,
explains the director. After
germination the small
plants come back and are
planted in bigger pots.
After a month the plants
are sorted by a machine
on the size of the plant.
Some go back to the same
greenhouse, others go on
to the selling party!
Soon it was time to go to
the next company de Ruiter
Seeds. After a short drive everybody was hungry and de Ruiter Seeds were
kind enough to feed the plantjes. First we could introduce ourselves, so that
the guides from de Ruiter could see what our interests were. A presentation
was given to tell us a bit about Monsanto, what market they aim for and
what the new inventions were with the crops.
After the presentation we got a tour through the company, the different
labs, genetic testing methods were discussed and also a secret room was
shown. Only the die hard employee was allowed into the room where they
hid some secret testing machines. De Ruiter still uses the old greenhouse
outside, but with all the improvements with genetics in the lab, they
require less and less space in the greenhouse. After an extra cup of coffee
we left just before the traffic jams started. Over all it was a nice and very
interesting excursion. Think you want to work there later? Ask someone who
went on the excursion!

Thesis - PSA winner
Thesis in Plant Physiology - Arjan
A couple of weeks ago, the Redakcie asked me to write something about
my thesis and the Rijk Zwaan Plant Sciences award with which my thesis
was awarded. Of course, I feel very honoured about winning the award and
therefore I am very pleased to tell you something about my thesis and the
award show.
It all started almost two years ago, when I had to write a project proposal, in
order to complete my bachelor. At that time, people from Plant Physiology,
together with a group in France, were preparing a Nature article in which
it was shown that strigolactones control shoot branching and in this way
function as a plant hormone. To me, it seemed very nice to work on this
newly identified plant hormone and therefore I decided to make it the
subject of my MSc thesis.
After completing the project proposal and following courses for a few
months, it was time to start my thesis at the beginning of January 2009.
As I mentioned before, strigolactones were found to be involved in the
regulation of shoot branching. However, not only strigolactones, but also
auxins and cytokinins are involved in this process. The subject of my thesis
was to look at the interaction between auxin and strigolactones and to look
at the effect of strigolactones on the formation of lateral roots. One of the
things we found was that strigolactones seem to promote auxin conjugation.
Auxin conjugation is a process in which different kinds of molecules (amino
acids, sugars, peptides…) are coupled to an auxin molecule, in order to make
the molecule inactive. The functions of conjugation range from storage of
auxin to active degradation of auxin molecules. Our data suggested that
strigolactones promote the formation of auxin conjugates which are targeted
for degradation, which ultimately lowers the auxin concentration inside the
plant.
When I finished my thesis, Professor Harro Bouwmeester advised me to send
my thesis in for the Rijk Zwaan Plant Sciences award. This award is organised
every year by the plant breeding company Rijk Zwaan. The award is meant
for students who just completed their thesis or internship in the field of
plant sciences and are willing to send in their report. Since, I thought this
was a nice opportunity and it was not a lot of work, I decided to send in my
thesis. After a few months, at the beginning of February this year, I was
called by someone from Rijk Zwaan who told me that my thesis had been
nominated for the Plant Sciences award 2010. A few hours later, I was called
by another person from Rijk Zwaan, who asked me if I was willing to give an
interview for the Rijk Zwaan website. Of course I was willing to, so we made
an appointment for the next week. The next week the reporter visited me
together with a photographer, who let me feel how it feels to be a model,
since he kept on taking pictures for at least half an hour.
One and a half months later, the day of the award show finally arrived.
Together with my parents I was invited at the Rijk Zwaan headquarters in
de Lier around noon. After having lunch, people from Rijk Zwaan gave us a
tour around one of their new buildings and one of the greenhouses. When
we came back from the small excursion, the official part of the afternoon
started. First, one of the directors of Rijk Zwaan welcomed everybody to
the award show. After that, someone from Wageningen gave an interesting
talk about possibilities of using plants as the new solar cells. After this small
lecture, it was time for us to present our theses. One of the nominees,
Magdalena Julkowska, was still in Australia for
an internship and had to present her thesis
via Skype. Luckily, she had not fallen asleep
(which probably would have happened to me)
during the time we had all the presentations,
since it was already after midnight in Australia
at the time she had to present her thesis.
After all three nominees had presented their
thesis, the jury announced the winner, which
turned out to be me. After receiving all kinds
of prizes, including a trip to Tanzania, bottles
of champagne were opened and the drink had
started. After some networking, by shaking
hands and talking to a lot of people, this very
exciting day ended.

and maybe you will be announced as the next Plant Sciences award winner,
next spring!

Hey Plantjes! It’s Vic again (I know who’d have thought they leave me
responsible for Broemmm again!) Last time I basically told you all I know
about things that go broemmm… so I had to call in some help for this one.
This very special Broemmm is written by a friend of mine from home, Steve –
a real Canadian dairy farmer! He works on his family’s farm with his father,
uncle and brother. It’s 200 hectares in total and they have about 100 cute
Holstein cows. I asked him to write about those famous, almost too big for
the road, gas-guzzling “American” trucks we love! Hope you enjoy!!
My favourite truck is the Chevrolet Silverado Extended Cab! Four-wheel
drive is a must, mostly because it’s fun, but it will also help get you through
our lovely winters a bit easier. There are two types of 4 wheel drive
selection, the push button or the floor stick shift.... I personally like the
push button better...it’s just a bit handier. The extended cab is nice to have
if it’s raining or snowing out and you don’t have a cover over the bed of the
truck. You can store a surprising amount of stuff back there. Some other
cool features are the On Star service. The newer versions can even detect if
you’ve been in an accident, and call the emergency crews for you. Another
clever thing that I like is that there is a compass and thermometer built into
the corner of the rear view mirror. It’s maybe a bit funny but I always catch
myself looking at my rear view mirror to see what the temperature is. Haha.
These kinds of trucks really help out on the farm. The 4 wheel is great
for getting through fields or if you have to go back through the woods for
something. This half-ton truck has a 295-hp 4.8-liter V8 engine, so it has
great towing power for moving equipment around if there are no tractors
close at hand. I use mine for moving small square bales from the barn to
the calf hutches. I’ve also used it to pull hay wagons (with only 6-8 round
bales...so not fully loaded) and gravity boxes for grains. It’s also very handy
if you have to take a piece of equipment (like a baler or something along
those lines) out to the dealership to get fixed. It means you don’t have to
take a tractor there and back on the highway. I use it to pick things up from
the feed mill (bags of calf feed, bags of salt, or salt blocks) which is nice
because it cuts down on delivery
charges. We’ve also used it to
move calves from the barn to
the hutches. And I take it to the
woods to get fire wood for the
house.

Internship
Forcing flower bulbs in the USA
I am writing this story about my internship at Cornell University while enjoying the great weather, sunny and temperatures in the lower eighties (Fahrenheit, which is about 25 ˚C) These temperatures
are quite extraordinary, especially because we also
had temperatures around -20 ˚C in January and a big
snow storm at the end of February that gave us about
two feet of snow (60 cm). But they didn’t ask me to
write a story about the weather in Ithaca, so let’s
start talking about my internship.
Spring just started and daffodils and crocuses are
starting to flower in the garden. Tulips need a little
bit more time, but will also flower if you give them a
few weeks. For me spring already started when, end
of January, my tulips, daffodils and hyacinths started
to flower in the greenhouse. That’s also the place
where I could be found during most of the time over
the last three months. However, my internship already started in September. Back then I had to count
out bulbs for the experiments, start cooling them and
plant them. The reason behind all these experiments with flower bulbs was
to get information about how to treat the different cultivars of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths when forcing them for pot or cut flower uses. Maybe the
term forcing (‘broeien’ in Dutch) needs some explanation for a few of you.
Forcing is the application of a cold treatment (e.g. keeping bulbs in a cooler
at 2 or 5 ˚C) for an extended period (14 or more weeks). This is, for example, done to get cut tulips from early January until half of April, while in nature most of the cultivars won’t flower until end of April. A lot of the flower
bulbs grown in the Netherlands are exported to the USA and then forced by
big companies. Let’s go back to the treatment of the flower bulbs. One of
the treatments is the duration of the cold period. For some of the cultivars
this should be at least 14 weeks, while for others a period of 19 weeks is required. A lot of the other treatments had to do with the application of plant
growth regulators (PGR’s), before or during the greenhouse period. These
PGR’s are used to keep the flowering crop short when they are grown for sale
in pots. Some cultivars don’t need an application of PGR’s, but others can
get a long stem and really need it. Furthermore, there are several moments
at which the PGR application can occur. The bulbs can be dipped before they
are cooled or they can be treated in the greenhouse by drenching (giving
them a certain amount of a PGR solution). And then there are different commercial products. In general most of these products do the same, because
they inhibit the production of gibberellins. However, the moment at which
they do that (step in the production process of gibberellins by the plant) and
the amount of active ingredient may differ. This gave us several big experiments with up to 340 pots per experiment. There were also experiments
with extending the flowering period of tulips by using either gibberellins (4
and 7), cytokinins or a product that contained both plant hormones (Fascination). The experiment in which we used fascination gave the tulips about an
extra day of flowering. However, they also stretched. That was of course due
to the gibberellins. So, we just started an experiment in which we also test
cytokinins and gibberellins separately.
There was also an experiment in which I tried to kill the flower buds of the
tulips by treating bulbs for two weeks with 10 ppm of ethylene. I didn’t kill
them all of course. There was also a treatment in which I at first treated the
bulbs with 1-MCP (a chemical that blocks the receptor sites of ethylene on
the cell walls and thus blocks the effect of ethylene on plants) before treating them with ethylene.
And then there were some experiments with the ethylene production of the
fungus Fusarium oxysporum, when they had infected tulip bulbs and the respiration of tulip bulbs when stored at different temperatures.
So, there were a lot of experiments. Luckily for me there was also time to
look around on the campus of Cornell, the city of Ithaca and explore even
more of the state of New York. When my girlfriend was here we visited the
city of New York, the Niagara Falls and a couple of water falls in the vicinity
of Ithaca. The nature in this area is very beautiful with, as you probably can
guess a lot of waterfalls. And here they have a real campus with loads of college buildings, student dorms and the Cornell plantations with an arboretum,
a lake and a couple of small gardens.

of the persons that are shown on the pictures, or the part of them that is
shown.
Oh and just to help you a little, the broccoli in the first picture is not a fellow plant scientist, it is just a vegetable in someone hand. But who’s hand is
it?? The rest of the pictures you can figure out yourself.

Impression of the 25th GMM and board change of Semper Florens
On Tuesday March 23, the 25th General Members Meeting and board change
of Semper Florens took place.
At half past seven the ALV started in C92 in the Radix building. After having
put their efforts in the association for a year, it was time for a few board
members to say goodbye and allow new board members to take their places.
We said goodbye to the commissioner education Wietske van der Starre,
commissioner communication Els ten Dam and the chairman Berend-Jan
Dobma. Jelle Dijkema was installed as the new chairman. The open positions
were filled by Rachel Begheyn as new commissioner education, WillemTies Oosterhuis as new commissioner communication and Wiert Wiertsema
(myself) as new secretary.
Like in previous GMM’s, the HTT-cie appeared unsuccessful in making a
suitable hammer for the new chairman Jelle. Even though it is an artistically
very elegant object with balls, PUR-foam and even a plant, the hammer was
lacking functionality. It was hardly possible to produce a clear ‘hammer beat’
with it. That is why the HTT-cie will have to create something even better
next time.
After the break the committee members were installed and there was the
possibility to ask questions. It was nice to see that Semper Florens has
many members who are very much involved and want only the best for the
association. They had some useful tips and advices and after clearing up
some ambiguities, we came to the closure of the GMM.
The board change in Annie’s Kroeg was well visited and there was a nice
atmosphere while enjoying some drinks and snacks. The new board members
had some good conversations with the visiting boards. The ‘meters’ were
flowing plentiful and there was cheering to the new board into the late
hours.
After everyone had left the bar, it was time for some deep-frying. The
evening had progressed pretty far and we probably would not be very
productive on Wednesday.
When I was in bed, the memorable moments of the evening where passing
through my head once more, and just before I fell asleep the thought: ‘I’ll
start this board work the day after tomorrow…’

Reünistendag
Na grote inspanningen van de ReünistendagCie en het bestuur was het
mogelijk om op zaterdag 6 maart wederom een Reünistendag plaats te laten
vinden op het Radix en Unifarm. Hier een indruk van deze mooie dag door
een van de bezoekers en tevens reünist van Semper Florens:
EEN KORTE IMPRESSIE VAN DE REÜNISTENDAG.
Afgelopen zaterdag 6 maart heb ik de Reünistendag van Semper Florens bezocht. Aan het einde van de dag werd ik door het bestuurslid communicatie,
Els ten Dam, gevraagd een indruk te geven van deze dag. Met plezier wil ik
aan dit verzoek voldoen. Echter ik heb geen aantekeningen gemaakt van de
inhoudelijke kant van de inleidingen, zodat ik moet afgaan op mijn geheugen.
Na een plezierige ontvangst
met koffie en cake, begon het
programma met een inleiding
van Ernst van den Ende, directeur van de Plant Sciences
Group van de WUR, en tevens
dagvoorzitter van dit symposium. Hij gaf een overzicht van
de huidige stand van zaken van
de studie Plantenwetenschappen en uitleg over de veranderingen die doorgevoerd worden. Tevens kwam de missie aan de orde. Het
aantal studenten, dat deze studies kiest zou groter kunnen zijn, gezien de
capaciteit van de afdeling, en de banen, die na het afstuderen beschikbaar
zijn. Volgens Van den Ende zijn de plantenwetenschappen niet aantrekkelijk genoeg voor de studenten. Er zijn in de studie mijns inziens echter
voldoende actuele en interessante onderwerpen, die de huidige student zou
kunnen interesseren, zoals het optimaliseren van de productie, bestrijding
van ziekten en plagen op natuurvriendelijke wijze, bestrijden van de armoede en honger in de wereld, het bestrijden van landdegradatie, bevorderen van natuurlijke productiewijze, zoals biologische landbouw, enz. Ook het
plantaardige onderzoek is ondergebracht in de afdeling Plant Sciences, dat
vroeger door de Onderzoeksinstituten werd uitgevoerd.
De technische uitvoering van het plantaardige onderzoek was gebundeld in
de afdeling Unifarm. We brachten aan dit onderdeel een bezoek. Unifarm
bestaat uit twee delen: een kassencomplex, voorzien van de meest geavanceerde uitrusting voor moderne kassen. Het is mogelijk energie in de
zomer op te slaan in de ondergrond en deze energie in andere jaargetijden
te gebruiken in de kassen, middels het oppompen van het warme water.
Het andere gedeelte bestaat uit een aantal loodsen, die voorzien zijn van
een outillage voor studentenproeven en voor grotere veldproeven. De apparatuur en het wagenpark zijn aanzienlijk groter en moderner, dan ruim
50 jaar geleden, toen ik aan de Haarweg college liep en proefjes deed. Met
een tweewielige tuinbouwtrekker met aan hanger werden we in de aanhanger naar het Binnenveld gereden door dhr. Kleeter om proefveldjes onder
graslandkooien te oogsten en te onderzoeken. Evenals de ritjes naar het
proefveld op Wageningen-Hoog, waar rogge, groenbemesters en bemestingsproefveldjes waren gelegen. Unifarm biedt de studenten (en het bedrijfsleven) de mogelijkheid om proeven op een verantwoorde manier uit te voeren.
Na deze excursie lieten de deelnemers zich een goede en uitgebreide lunch
prima smaken. Uiteraard was er voldoende tijd om herinneringen op te halen.
‘s Middags volgden nog een tweetal inleidingen. De eerste was: “GMO met
cisgenese en het spanningsveld tussen kwekersrecht en patentrecht” door de
Hoogleraar Plantenveredeling van de WUR, Prof. Dr. Ir. Evert Jacobsen. Hij
gaf op een duidelijke wijze een uiteenzetting over transgenese en cisgenese
en GM-gewassen, de achterstand, die in Nederland dreigt en door de wetgeving van het patentrecht, dat de (GM)-rassen in handen komen van de grote
multinationals. De Nederlandse kwekers raken in de verdrukking.
De tweede lezing werd gegeven door de Commerciële Manager van Flora
Holland in Naaldwijk, Ir. Theo Aanhane over ‘’Introductie van digitaal zaken
doen in een traditionele wereld.” Hierbij wordt getracht om in een virtuele
omgeving de handel van bloemen en potplanten te optimaliseren. De handel
vindt plaats op een zestal “veilingklokken”. De bloemen zijn niet meer in de
werkelijke wereld te zien, maar worden met foto’s weergegeven. Het transport kan worden beperkt van kweker tot afnemer. Temeer omdat een groot
deel van de productie in het buitenland plaats heeft, evenals een groot deel
van de afname.
Ten slotte werd de dag afgesloten met een ruim voorziene borrel, waarbij de
tongen goed los kwamen en het netwerken in een plezierige omgeving plaats
vond.
Al met al kunnen het Bestuur van Semper Florens en de Commissie voor de
organisatie van de Reünistendag op een interessante, goed georganiseerde
en geslaagde dag terugzien.

‘MENÉÉÉÉR, HIJ DOET HET NIET…
WAT MOET IK NU DOEN?’
(…) ‘In de handleidingen staan alle stappen van de experimenten nog eens
duidelijk beschreven, pas op voor vlekken met de jodide, de spullen kun je
hiervoor zelf pakken en we zullen rondlopen voor het beantwoorden van jullie vragen. Dus ga maar aan de slag!’
Deze intro kunnen we nu ondertussen wel dromen en luid het begin in van een
100 minuten durend practicum over fotosynthese en de toepassing daarvan
in een VWO 5 klas op middelbare scholen. Je zult het misschien al geraden
hebben, maar dit stukje gaat over onze beleving en ervaringen van het verzorgen van een Mobiel Practicum vanuit Wageningen Universiteit. Jasper en ik
besloten ergens in het begin van dit studiejaar dat Periode 4 de ideale gelegenheid was om eens iets compleets anders te doen dan colleges en practica
te volgen. Aangezien het practicum ‘Krachten uit de Natuur’ gebaseerd is op
fotosynthese kon het niet anders dan dat dit de ideale keuze was om als Plantenwetenschapper eens lekker in een gehuurde Peugeot Bipper door heel Nederland te scheuren om een hele leuke tijd te beleven! Maar wat maak je zoal
mee als je niet brakjes naar een suffe professor in een donkere collegezaal
zit te luisteren totdat eindelijk het verlossende woord ‘Koffie’ je wakker doet
schrikken uit je dagdromen?
Ten eerste is er de kwestie van
‘vroeg’ opstaan. Alhoewel dit een
ruim begrip is kunnen we je verzekeren dat het vroeger is dan het welbekende ‘Ik moet al om half negen
op college zijn morgenochtend!’.
Voordeel is natuurlijk het meemaken
van een schitterende zonsopkomst,
maar ook het gezelschap van tientallen auto’s die samen met jou de
verkeersaderen van West-Nederland
verstoppen en de bekende radiopresentatoren voor minstens een half
uur van hun ochtendshow werk aanleveren. Eenmaal aangekomen op de middelbare school kan het zijn dat je op de verkeerde locatie staat, de opgegeven
contactpersoon niet bestaat of niet aanwezig is en je dus zelf maar op zoek
moet gaan naar een leeg biologie leslokaal. Maar ook zeer positieve, zeer
geïnteresseerde en overenthousiaste docenten kruisten regelmatig ons pad.
Na of tijdens het routine werk van opbouwen en de presentatie checken op
de meeste uiteenlopende computers en beamers die er maar bestaan, kun je
lekker gaan babbelen met de docent onder het genot van een kopje koffie die
in tegenstelling tot de Forum koffie vaak wel enige smaak bevat.
Dan volgt het practicum zelf, een kudde pubers stroomt het lokaal in, zit wat
angstig aan alle apparatuur te frunniken en is even de kluts kwijt wat er ook
alweer zou gaan gebeuren deze ochtend. Na een korte introductie van de
leraar, kunnen Jasper en ik helemaal los gaan om deze onschuldige leerlingen
te bombarderen met (suffe) kennis over fotosynthese en de uitleg van de proeven. Onvoorstelbaar om te zien dat zelfs als je alle antwoorden op de vragen
geeft in de inleiding en nog driemaal tijdens het practicum, de leerlingen het
na een uurtje allang weer vergeten zijn of ‘toevallig een vlaag van
verstandsverbijstering hadden’. Maar natuurlijk blijven we vol goede moed
en rust de vragen beantwoorden, de stof honderdmaal herhalen, apparatuur
op de juiste standen zetten en inspiratieloze mensen toch aan het werk zien
te krijgen. Kortom, voordat je het weet zitten de 100 minuten er weer op en
kun je toch zeggen dat je een steentje hebt bijgedragen aan de kennisontwikkeling van de jeugd.
Daarna volgt de periode van ouwehoeren met wat enthousiaste leerlingen,
‘spannende’ verhalen van de docent en even snel opruimen, om daarna te
gaan genieten van het heerlijke weer buiten. Maar niet voordat Neerlandsch
files zijn doorgeworsteld en minstens honderd keer van radiozenders te zijn
gewisseld. Dus in het beste geval sta je tegen 9 uur op, rijdt naar een school
in Veenendaal, geeft 1x een practicum en rijdt weer naar huis om tegen half
2 je eerste biertje met een oprecht voldaan gevoel te kunnen openen! Het is
een zwaar leven, maar iemand moet het doen toch? Andere dagen ben je wel
weg van 7 uur ’s ochtends en terug om 18 uur ’s avonds, maar dit is meer een
uitzondering op de regel en zolang je elkaar nog kunt vermaken in de vertrouwde Bipper, overleef je dat ook allemaal wel.
Het is een heerlijk uitstapje tussen het vakken volgen door en je kunt met je
maatje heerlijk Nederland en bijbehorende agrarische werkzaamheden aanschouwen, mooie (boeren)muziek uit de speakers laten stampen en vooral
lekker genieten van het ‘harde’ werken! Dus mocht zich ooit de kans voordoen
dat jij met een goede vriend(in) op stap kunt gaan, aarzel niet en kop die 6
ECTS binnen en ga lekker op vakantie van die €50,- vergoeding per lesdag! In
week 8 is er de kans om te herkansen of je reflectieverslag te schrijven (die
punten moeten toch ergens vandaan komen) of natuurlijk lekker een weekje
vrij (optioneel). Al met al is het dus een mega mooie ervaring die zeker de
moeite waard is geweest!

BOEREN!?!
Het zal menigeen niet ontgaan zijn dat er onder de SF leden een aantal serieuze boeren rondlopen die vaak ondersteund worden door een grotere
meerderheid wannabe boeren of mensen die gewoon houden van lekker
dom ouwehoeren. Kortom, na het bereiken van dit publiek en het bij elkaar
scharrelen van een paar enthousiaste boerenmuziek liefhebbers kon het concept van een ‘Boerenrock avond’ na het succes van vorig jaar wederom herhaald worden.
Nu vraag je je misschien af wat
voor soort muziek ‘boeren rock’
dan precies inhoudt waar deze
hele avond op gebaseerd is. Kort
door de bocht is het eigenlijk alle
nederlands- dan wel engelstalige
muziek waar (dronken) boeren
zich helemaal op kunnen uitleven
tijdens schuurfeesten, landwerkzaamheden of in de winterperiode (als zij toch niks te doen hebben). Ik hoor je denken dat dit
nogal een wijd begrip is en vele
muziekstijlen en artiesten hieronder zouden kunnen vallen. Dit was dan ook
het geval en bood de organisatie meer dan genoeg input om een spannende
quiz op te stellen.
Op een woensdagavond (voor de oplettende lezer: dit was dus op een Woeste
Woensdag) zou het spektakel los moeten barsten, alleen was het aan het
begin van de avond nog even aftasten naar de juiste volumesterkte, houding/kledingstijl (wel of geen klompen en/of overall) en niet geheel onbelangrijk, een groot aantal deelnemers voor de quiz. Na de nodige meters bier
en bellen/smsen van bekenden besloot de organisatie dan toch maar aan de
quiz te beginnen met 4 deelnemende teams die streden om de felbegeerde
titel ‘Boerenteam van het jaar’. Door dit selecte gezelschap werd de competitie en drang om de wisseltrofee in de wacht te slepen steeds groter en
werd het nummer van de ME al bij de hand gehouden in het geval dat deze
boeren Annie’s af zouden breken. Gelukkig kon tussendoor nog even de aandacht worden gepakt om een stel muziekgerelateerde vragen te stellen die
de cryptische boerengeest flink op de proef stelde. Zo passeerden vragen de
revue als ‘Waar is het lekker... (op de trekker)’ en ‘Kiele kiele kiele... (eerst
met de vingers, dan met de piele)’ misleid door andere onzinantwoorden.
Ook de muziekkennis werd getest door het raden van intro’s, herkennen van
zinnen uit songteksten en niet te min: het raden van liedjes die achterstevoren werden afgespeeld. Een intermezzo tussen al dat nadenken door werd
gevormd door een heuse worst-eet-wedstrijd waarbij de teams extra punten
konden verdienen. Om ook de minder muzikale boeren een kans op winnen
te geven waren er natuurlijk ook algemene boerenvragen zoals ‘Hoeveel
weegt een vol fust bier? (61 kg)’ en ‘Wat is wereldwijd het meest verkochte
trekkermerk? (Massey Ferguson)’.
Na het nakijken van de antwoorden en toekennen van de punten kon de
schitterende wisseltroffee worden onthuld die door minimaal twee man gedragen dient te worden. Uiteindelijk ging het team ‘Kromme Jordi en de
Jappelrooiers’ er met deze prijs vandoor en zullen ze deze volgend jaar met
net zoveel boerenenthousiasme gaan verdedigen! Dus hopelijk tot dan en in
de tussentijd: zorg dat je die boerenkennis op peil houdt ;).
Towards Flexibility
Next year the university will implement another education plan, which is
called Towards Flexibility. I guess you’ve heard of it often before now. In this
piece of text I will tell something about the reasons for this shift and something about the consequences for BSc students.
From next year on we will have a major-minor system at the university. A
minor can be useful to improve the T-shaped skills of the student, to prepare
better for a MSc or just to get more knowledge about an interesting theme.
To make a minor a success it is necessary to schedule it as a coherent entity.
This will have consequences for the scheduling of courses. Besides this it
should be easier for students to move to another university for a semester or
for students from other universities to come here to follow courses. Wageningen University is the only university in The Netherlands with 5 periods in
a year. This means that our university, unlike other universities, doesn’t have
two semesters in a year. To have a better alignment with periods of other
universities it is also needed to adapt the scheduling.
Instead of 5 periods in a year there will be 6 periods. The 3rd period will be
split up in a 3rd and 4th period. These periods will become blocks of 4 weeks
including the examination. Courses in these periods will be given fulltime.
The BSc programme consists of 180 credits. The major will consist of 150
credits and will be completed with a BSc thesis. The remaining 30 credits are
meant for free choice. The students can fill in 24 credits of their free choice
with a described minor. A described minor is a minor that has been approved
by the OWI-board on the basis of a set of criteria.
There are two types of described minors. The first type is a programme related minor. This minor is developed by the programme committee. The other type of a minor is a thematic minor, developed by chair groups. This gives
chair groups the opportunity to set up minors about actual topics. Part of the
minors will consist of existing courses, but there will be also minors with new
courses. To set up these minors extra money is available.
The new set-up of the BSc Plant Sciences is as follows. Year 1 and 2 of the
BSc will contain courses of the major. In the first semester of the 3rd year
students can do thier BSc thesis and in the second semester of the 3rd year
students can do a minor or just follow courses of their own choice.
Plant Sciences students can choose between two majors. One major is
‘Plants, Genomics and Health’. It will contain the learning paths A, B, C and
D. The other major is Plant Production and Ecology and the learning paths E,
F, G and H will be implemented in this major.
Probably the consequences for current students will not be that much. However some courses will change and the scheduling of courses will change, so
this may become a problem if you still have to achieve some subjects. Fortunately the possibility to do a re-exam for a subject will remain for a year.
Hopefully this whole re-structuring will indeed improve flexibility and also
the possibilities for students to do interesting minors.

Plantlet Interview
Jonathan Kalisvaart
Hailing from the small town Nuenen which is
quite close to Eindhoven, Philips etc, the person of interest arrived in Wageningen. Now
some of you might wonder why Jonathan, or
‘’Jons’’, or ‘’Kalisvaart’’ decided to come
to Wageningen. I think if you have lived long
enough here you’ll probably know the answer
yourself. In case you haven’t lived here long
enough then I think the explanation that was
given by our ‘’fake-plant scientist’’ will do very
fine. Wageningen is so great because you have a
lot of new people coming here every year, as well as the living environment
being very nice.
Wait a second… did I say fake-plant scientist?? That sounds rather offensive
don’t you agree? Now I can explain to you that this nickname has some history. Jonathan needed some extra thought to make the decision to choose
for our study. For that reason he decided to follow the orientation year. After having orientated as much as he liked and participating in some plant
courses, he decided to go for it. Now he just has to hope that in time he’ll
be accepted as a true plant scientist. Of this I have no reason to doubt when
I take a look at some of the students that followed the same path: Wietske,
Eva and Frederick. Or maybe just a little bit…
Anyway, Jonathan now lives here in Wageningen to be more precise in the
Gerdesstraat. There he shares his space with two other Plant Scientists, Ivo
Koolhaas and Luuk Lageschaar. If we can believe him it must be nice to live
with them, or so he said. Then I was told that they are planning on turning
their apartment into a jungle. Do you need more convincing? I can imagine
that you want to know what the favourite thing is Jonathan likes to cook.
Since what a person eats says a lot about who he/she. Following that line
of reasoning I think I’ll have to say that Jonathan is a real Dutchman by preferring potatoes with vegetables and a good piece of juicy meat. Being a
healthy meal it enables him to eat less healthy again for some days. What he
means with eating less healthy I don’t have to explain, right?
Enough about eating let’s get back to the living. Since the plan is to create
a jungle in his apartment it is good to know the state of his flora and fauna.
I’m not sure if his four Ikea cactuses will do very well in the jungle. I’m not
sure if ‘’Albert Heijn’’ plants can grow into a jungle but that is something
that could be tested I think. His two lettuce seedlings are holding their
breath, for their lives depend largely on the possible presence of herbivores…
Pfew.. The lettuce plants can breath again and be relieved since Patrick and
Octo, the two chickens… Yeah Spongebob sadly died…, the cute white rabit
Bobby and some less threatening nameless fishes are still back at homehome. Enough Flora for a real jungle I say, even if there has to be something
done about the lack of Fauna. It may be good if Jane came to the jungle as
Jonathan is still a ‘’happy single’’. Or maybe he really is happy, being single,
you never know.
As far as talking about jungles is fun enough I can imagine that you now want
to know something more about this fresh plant scientist. Believe it or not
but the youth of this guy could be described as youthful. Now I wonder how
he characterizes other aspect of his life, but maybe its better not to know.
Another nice detail is that he has two matching duvet covers, one being a
cheap grey duvet cover with city names and the other one a nice blue one.
The blue one is being washed for as far as that really interests you. Besides
these facts there is also the fact that our plantlet doesn’t have a tractor.
Shocking! Ah well you never know what life brings you and maybe someday
he’ll have one of his own.
Jons favourite party drink is beer and when the mood is right he might go for
Jägermeister or a good whiskey. One of the places he likes to drink is probably Ceres as he is member of this student association. From all the good
cafes Wageningen has to offer De Vlaamse Reus is his café of choice. So maybe you will find him drinking beer or Whiskey or whatever for drink in one of
these places.
For as great as the parties can be at Ceres his favourite parties are still
birthday parties. So maybe a birthday party starting at De Vlaamse Reus and
then off to Ceres. Or maybe just some good old Dutch-fashioned ‘’koekhappen’’ and ‘’Aardappelpoepen’’. After he had a good night of partying he
can just stop in the middle of the street because he sees a very interesting
plant. Oh wait.. This is probably not at night when you drank just a little bit
too much. It does however tell about what you are very enthusiastic about:
Plants!
After all the partying you have to recover and nothing gives a better kick
than some coffee with sugar, at least that is what mister Kalisvaart must
have thought. At such moments he can think about how he sees himself in
five years and then he sees himself doing all kinds of cool stuff with plant.
That must be a great dream! There must be some connection with the fact
that for your specialisation you probably want to do something with genetic
modification and related stuff. For sure genetic modification is doing cool
stuff with plants don’t you all agree??
Luckily Jonathan is also active apart from his study and partying(who can
tell the difference?). He did play trumpet which officially he still does but
he hasn’t touched one in half a year now. That’s not something really active
right? Well lets try something else, our plantlet like to ride his mountain bike
through the forest or the refuse-dump in Nuenen which is now some sort of
artificial hill. In Wageningen he’s not very active in sports, yet??
Some other favourite things of Jonathan are lemon green as a colour because

match don’t you? His favourite excursion so far was ‘’kom in de kas’’ where
he didn’t see much because of the crowdedness. Still he had a great time
together with Wijnand, Ivo, Nick and Perry. And due to the Ikea dinner……..

As Wageningen is his best choice in life until now it was very hard to find
something that is not great about Wageningen. Probably the winters are
cold, but that was not really linked to Wageningen. I’ll have to agree however that cold winters are nasty.. brrr
Reading this all again once written I can hardly think why someone would
find that Jonathan is a fake-plant scientist. I believe that he is actually doing a pretty good job at being one. But maybe I take this too serious, so as a
goodbye and a see you soon just some final thoughts of our ‘’fake-plant scientist’’:

- Els voor een grote zaadlozing gezorgd heeft onder middelbare scholieren?
- Twan na het consumeren van 10 bier opeens stapelverliefd was!
- De boerenrock avond zo intensief was dat maar liefst 4 mensen de hele volgende dag nodig hadden om bij te komen/uit te brakken?
- Als je de zakken van je broek openknipt, je in de bioscoop overal goed bij
kunt, dus een bioscoopbroek hebt?
- BJ precies weet wat Tom in het bestuur doet? ‘Hij doet wat hij moet doen
en als hij daarmee klaar is, dan begint hij gewoon maar weer opnieuw.’
- Els aan Twan vroeg: Wil je mij kussen?
- Twan hippies nog erger vindt dan Friezen?
- Joan ook graag op maandag papadag zou willen (net als Sven van Nema)?
- Tom niet naar de bestuurswissel van Pyrus kon komen, maar een paar verdiepingen hoger had ‘ie geen probleem met komen?
- Tom niet alleen een laffe borrelaar is, maar ook nog een laffe blaffelaar,
beffelaar en swaffelaar?
- BJ alleen drinkt op de eerste woensdag en donderdag van de week...?
- Piet autowas kreeg om zijn auto op te poetsen omdat een nieuwe motorkap
te duur was?
- En een krat amstel voor tijdens het poetsen en om de boel nog mooier te
maken?
- Nick Alberts een wel erg originele manier heeft gevonden om dronken een
fles wijn te openen zonder opener?
- Dit alleen wel ten koste gaat van de ‘drink-veiligheid’ (glas prikkelt de
maag!) en misschien een koekenpan kost?
- Dit ook erg vermoeiend is en tot gevolg heeft dat zijn hoofd vaak niet meer
recht op zijn romp staat tijdens zijn ochtendcollege?
- Vrouwen net paaseitjes zijn, het vliesje doorkomen kost wat moeite, maar
daarna komt het lekkere (v/d Pijl et al., 2010).
- Zelfs de ex-voorzitter van Mercurius de SF leden niet droog wil laten staan
en daarom een kratje HJ meenam naar onze ALV?
- Tot grote spijt van de aanwezige dorstachtige mensen alleen leden bij de
ALV aanwezig mogen zijn (en dus geen bier genuttigd kon worden)?
- Leaniek als ex-voorzitster tijdens de wisselborrel bewees dat ze nog steeds
beschikt over voldoende spraakkwaliteiten (alias dikke tong)?
- Onze geëmancipeerde Els een heuse zelf gemaakt kubieke meter (m3) bier
heeft aangeboden tijdens de wisselborrel?
- Na een meter bier, zelfs een dubbele meter jägermeister helemaal uit is?
- Een meter broodje bakpao (jonge, kut!) nu helemaal de bom is!
- Heel Hoevestein mee heeft mogen profiteren van de nasleep na de ALV en
mooi versierd is met wc-papier?
- Elke afdeling ook was voorzien van een wake-up call rond 4 uur ’s nachts en
direct een avond snack (knakworsten) weer mee naar binnen kon nemen?
- De schoonmaak-skills van onze nieuwe commissaris communicatie drastisch
achteruit gaan na een paar bier?
- En we dit moesten bekopen met een schoonmaakboete van het Annie´s bestuur?

- Volgens ‘praeses’ Jelle alle leden per definitie incapabel zijn?
- Michel stage komt lopen bij het oud SF bestuur om klaargestoomd te
worden voor de Woeste Woensdag?
- Joan gemiddeld 100x per jaar in het wild zijn schijtbehoefte zalig vervuld?
- De HTT-cie een condoom tekort had?
- Bart ‘condoom’ les kreeg van Sonja en dit direct in de praktijk bracht, wat
te zien was bij de hamer op de ALV?
- Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis onze buren van het hok om de hoek kwamen kijken om te zien wat er voor heftig spektakel plaatsvond?
- Vrouwen net als telefoonabonnementen zijn? Voor je het weet zit je er meteen een jaar aan vast!
- Jasper wel zou willen dat zijn vriendin net zo goedkoop zou zijn als zijn
