Students Protest New Immigration Laws
th
On March 24 , the students of John Adams Middle School witnessed the largest protest in the city of Los Angeles. Over half a million people
protested against the proposed Immigration Law that would make it a felony to be an illegal immigrant. It also prohibits anyone hiring them
or giving them assistance in finding housing. Yesterday, March 27th, students from many schools throughout the state walked out to support
the protestors. Throughout the state, the protests were peaceful with very little violence.
Why is this so important and It’s Impact on us?
California has a higher percentage of illegal immigrants than other states across the nation because of the opportunities available in this state.
It is estimated we have approximately 11 million illegal immigrants in this country. One of our students state, “My dad hired an illegal
immigrant to do some work and he is doing a good job. He did not know he was illegal but found out after he told my dad that he may have
to find someone else to complete the job if this law passes. I don’t think it should be a felony that someone wants to work hard.”
Another student states, “We have many people who are willing to work for less and if this law passes, there won’t be people to do that cheap
labor.”
Another student interviewed states, “ If we make it a felony to be here, than there will not be enough jails to keep them in.”
This laws has some benefits, making sure that people immigrate to this country legally to ensure they do not have criminal records and are
here to work. Although this law may be in an attempt to control who comes into this country, the law does not respect the human rights that
founded this country which is to provide people the right to pursue happiness and promote the general welfare of the American people.

Eddie Lopez. One could say he was a good kid. He had a lot of friends, some of
which attended JAMS. He himself went to SAMOHI. He passed on, earlier this
month and his death affected countless people. On his My Space profile, there
are quite a few pages of comments left after his death. You can also see people
wearing clothes with his picture on it. Over 1,000 people arrived for Eddie’s
funeral. Near the end of 2005, his life was cut short. His death wasn’t silent
though.
Sixth Grade Highlights
By Kyra Sweeney and Abby Mahler (both in sixth grade)
What are some things sixth graders enjoy doing in their spare time?
What are their hobbies and interests?
To find out, we sent out a short survey by email to about ten sixth grade
students, to get their opinions!
We found out that some of the things they like to do in their spare
time are singing, reading, watching TV, playing on the computer, and
participating in sports. Some favorite websites are neopets.com,
horseland.com, yahoo.com, ebaumsworld.com, and
albinoblacksheep.com. We also asked about their electives. Almost all
said that they either like or somewhat like theirs. Many people are in
band, some are in chorus and one is in leadership.
Most students said that they like John Adams so far. A lot of sixth
graders are in after school activities, some being acting, sports, and
dancing.
Some sports that they play are soccer, baseball, basketball and volleyball.
When asked about their favorite bands or singers, most everyone gave
different responses. Some of these were Green Day, Avril Lavigne,
Beatles, and Mariah Carey along with many others.
We feel that this survey gave us some great information and we want to
thank everyone who participated!
Interview with Narconon Representative
By: Helen Davidson
th
The 6 grade students heard a representative from Narconon share about the
dangers of drugs and alcohol. The assembly was interesting because he had a
lot of good points about drug education. “I thought it was good because he
actually went through it and knows what it is all about.” He recognized that
you can’t tell people what to do but we can educate people to not get involved
in it.
How long have you been working at the center?
Since 1976.
When did you realize that drugs were bad?
Two weeks before I went to the center because I got really sick.
How long have you been learning about drugs?

Students earn points for each grade they receive in classes. An “A” is 4 points, a
“B” is 3 points, a “C” is two points, and a “D” is one point. All points earned is
added at the semester and divided by the number of classes a student takes for a
Grade Point Average. The following students earned a B or higher average for the
1st semester. Congratulations to our Honor Roll Students.

Seven Grade
What is your favorite thing about the 7th grade?
My favorite thing about 7th grade is that you don’t have to do as much
work as the 8th graders.
What is your least favorite thing about 7th grade?
Grades and report cards are my least favorite thing. I think that
teachers should not give us grades and punish us if school is not the
thing that you are good at .
What is your least favorite thing about our schedule?
My least favorite thing about the schedule is how we have all classes
3 times a week. It is very annoying.
Do you think are lunch program is good or bad. What would you change
if you had a chance?
I think that our lunch program is horrible and if I could change it, it
would be like SAMO with different food offerings and we
could go off campus to eat!
I think that the 7th grade picnic is awesome because it’s a big reward
for all the hard work we put into during the 7th grade year.
What do you think would make the 7th grade a better year for all 7th
graders?
I think that is a very difficult to answer because all 7th graders have
different ideas what they want.
Guess what guys; it’s the last 3 months of
our years here at JAMS!! We are promoting in
June, and then we are off to high school. We
have had a fun and exciting experience
throughout the years.
Sixth grade was a little scary at first, but we
all got through it. We were more relaxed during
our seventh grade year, although we still had tons
of homework. Now we are at the top of the
school and getting though our last days at JAMS.
Sooner or later the process starts over and we
become the newbies at the school again.
If you haven’t caught up with your work
yet, now is the time. The semester ends in June
and those grades with determined your placement
in high school.

March , Does It EVER END?

In my opinion the “wonderful” month called March bites. This is the
only month we don’t get a vacation. Where is the March Holiday??
Usually February is the coldest month of the year, but this year
Mother Nature made us suffer. So far, March was the most boring
month at John Adams. With all of it’s horrible weather and NO
holidays March has to be the worst month ever.
By: Jivanto
Cold weather is cold weather you cant change that and it happens in
almost every month. So what! Bundle up. We don’t get a vacation but
you still have all of the weekends of March.
I don’t see what makes this month so much worse than any other?

Stairway of the Stars
By; Jivanto van Hemert
The 57th annual Stairway of the Stars was a wonderful success. This year we had a wonderful guest
conductor, Mr. Eric Whitakaer. We all enjoyed the performances and Mrs. Blanchard said to her
Norseman Honor Choir, “I am very proud of how you all did and am glad it was all a success.” The
concerts took place on March 16th and 17th at 7:30 in the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Our very
own John Adams Wind Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, and Norseman Honor Choir were featured
in the performances. There were approximately 1,000 performers, did you go? Did you see your
friends when you were there?

A Book Review
NAME That BOOK!
"And yet, they were exactly alike.
Every one of them was chalky pale,
the palest of all the students living in
this sunless town. Paler than me, the
albino." (p.18)
A new student in an old town named
Bella is having a strange love
encounter with a group of students
at her very own high school,
particularly one with a name of
Edward. Worst of all, she believes
he hates her.
Bella, the new girl in school, seems
have lots of new friends, most of
them male. Too bad the one guy she
finds interesting is dead.
The vampire of the school.
This stunning and in-the-moment
novel by Stephenie Meyer is heart
throbbing and full of action, all the
way. Many a moment in which Bella
realizes that she will be undead as
well.
She believes it couldn't be soon
enough.
Do You Know the Name of This
Book?
March, Focus on Respect in Advisory
All students at John Adams Middle School watched a video during Advisory about Bullying
and name calling. Some students did a worksheet, others had discussions, but all had a
chance to learn more about how names hurts. Here’s a thought from a 6th grader.
Scrubs by Sam Harreschou
3. a domestic animal of mixed or inferior breeding; mongrel. 4. a small or insignificant
person. 5. anything undersized or inferior. 6. Sports. a player not belonging to the varsity or
regular team; a player who is not first-string. 7. small, undersized, or stunted. 8. inferior or
insignificant.
Wow, that’s a pretty powerful word to be said out 7th and 8th graders mouths’
towards 6th graders. This derogatory term should be abolished from JAMS because
of its significance and its intimidating effect.. 6th graders aren’t second string- don’t treat
them like it!
Jokes and riddles by Autumn Moore
Sam: would you punish me for something that I didn’t do?
Teacher: no, of course not
Sam: Good, because I didn’t do my homework.
What do you call a guy at your front door with no legs or arms?
Mat
I can please only one person per day. Today is not your day.
And tomorrow isn’t looking too good either.
What did the cannibal call the phone book?
A menu
What did the tree say to the leaf at the dance?
Lets get twiggy with it.
The more of them you take, the more of them you leave behind.
What are they?
