CITY WALK LINZ
Linz was founded by the Romans, who called it "Lentia", but there was already a Celtic settlement
called "Lentos"; probably their word for the winding of a river. It was a provincial and local
government city of the Holy Roman Empire, and an important trading point connecting several
routes. Being the city where the Habsburg Emperor Friedrich III spent his last years, it was, for a short
period of time, the most important city in the empire. It lost its status to Vienna and Prague after the
death of the Emperor in 1493.
There are many things to see in Linz. Take a stroll down the main street which leads to the main
square. In addition to the medieval town square in the historic old town and the Mozarthaus see the
Renaissance villas , the old cathedral with the Bruckner organ or the new cathedral. Visits depend on
opening hours of the cathedral and/or if a mess is celebrated etc. If time allows, you can taste a piece
of the famous Linzer Torte (Linzer Cake) in one of the local bakeries.

TOUR OF THE ABBEY ROAD
The abbey road a glorious past of medieval Normandy
The very romantic meanders of the Seine River are boarded by architectural gems: churches, castles,
and abbeys .More than 100 abbeys once covered this region. Follow our Local expert to St. Wandrille
(still a living, working community) and Jumièges described by Victor Hugo as one of the most
beautiful ruins in France. They both belong to a prestigious group of Merovingian abbeys in
Normandy, that later became ducal monasteries. With our tour coach we will take you within a short
drive to the village of St. Wandrille. The abbey is often referred to St. Wandrille and is located on the
north bank of the Seine. Founded in 649 by St. Wandrille, former minister to the king Dagobert 1st ,
the Saint-Wandrille abbey can take credit for having trained a number of bishops and saints of the
Church, based on St. Benedict's teachings. The entire area is not open to visitors. However, the
ancient ruined abbey church (spectacular) is open. The monks purchased a Tithe Barn and moved it
to the abbey grounds for their church and except during services, it is open to the public. Discover
also a small, charming chapel by the monks' cemetery. During this stop, your guide will evoke the
former great abbey church and the very interesting classical and medieval architecture combined
within the walls of the actual abbey. Continue on to Jumièges, the first sight of the remains of the
immense abbey church, in its verdant setting, is unforgettable. It’s one of the most ancient and
important monasteries in the Western world. The abbey was founded in 654 by Saint Philibert, a
courtier at the court of king Dagobert 1st . Destroyed in 841 by the Vikings and again during the
Hundred Years War, it was used as a source of dressed stone after the French Revolution. Despite its
many wounds, the great silhouette seems engraved forever in the landscape. The vestiges of the

stronghold: Château Gaillard. It was built at the end of the 12th century on a limestone promontory,
overlooking the Seine. You’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the river and surrounding
countryside. Completed in one year, Richard LionHeart exclaimed: "How beautiful she is, my oneyear-old daughter! What a 'gaillard' (well fortified) castle!" Behind these walls, Blanche and
Marguerite, adulterous daughters-in-law of Philippe le Bel king of France, atoned for their sins.
Continue on your morning to Giverny, a village nestled in the heart of the Vexin, and a source of
inspiration for the most impressionist of painters. When Claude Monet glanced out of the window of
his train and caught sight of the village of Giverny, he decided then and there that this was, where he
wanted to live and work. And so he did, from 1883 until his death in 1926. The beautiful
surroundings, vividly colored flora, and gentle atmosphere of the place became some of the biggest
sources of inspiration for his work. Enter the intimate world of this great epicurean. Share with your
guide in the affection Clemenceau had for his friend, the exchanges and verbal jousts with
contemporaries Berthe Morisot, Marie Cassatt, Paul Cézanne…. Tour the blue living room, the studio

Formal royal palace, the Louvre is the most visited museum in the world today, and one of the

CLUNY ABBEY
The Abbey of Cluny in Burgundy was the center of a major monastic movement in the Middle Ages.
Its church was the largest Christian building in the world until St. Peter's Basilica was rebuilt in Rome
in the 16th century. Although most of the great Abbey of Cluny are ruins, they still show the size and
glory of the abbey at its zenith, and imagining it as it once was. Today, one transept of the 12thcentury abbey church remains, along with 15th-century abbots' residences and 18th-century convent
buildings. The site also includes pleasant gardens and a museum with Romanesque artifacts.
Your guide will show you around this ancient Benedictine abbey. This church, with its uncommon
dimensions in terms of Romanesque art, was completed under the abbacy of Pierre the Venerable
and consecrated in 1130. Its principal architect was Hézelon de Liège. The origin of its construction is
said to be a monk's dream.

IMPERIAL FESTIVAL PALACE – CASTLE HOF
From Bratislava the bBus takes you to Castle Hof in Austria. The magnificent complex was built in the
early 18th century through the efforts of two of the most important personalities of the Austrian
Baroque period. Field Marshall Prince Eugene of Savoy was already a legend in his lifetime. An
enthusiast for the arts, he provided almost unlimited funding for the construction which the brilliant
architect Lucas von Hildebrandt used to realise his virtuoso concept of a unique ensemble,
comprising a magnificent palace, beautifully designed terraced gardens and an idyllic country estate.
Under its later owner, Empress Maria Theresa, an additional storey was added to the palatial
building, which was remodelled in the style of French Classicism in accordance to the tastes of the
time. Unique in Europe, this world of adventure has ever since become a top destination for those
who seek culture, nature and delight and want to explore the fascinating world of the Baroque in all
its authenticity and diversity in an historical ambience. After the visit inside the castle you have
enough free time to see the beautiful garden and the Maierhof with numerous animals.
