With the award of its Environmental
Chamber Expansion, Aristeo is pleased to
add Hyundai to its long list of automobile
manufacturing clients. Aristeo was selected
by Hyundai’s construction affiliate, Hyundai
AMCO, as the project’s General Contractor
in July of 2012. The project is located at the
Hyundai America Technical Center in Superior Township, MI.
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI).
Also included in the site upgrade is a parking lot
expansion and renovation of an innovation space.
The Environmental Chamber Expansion
consists of a 25,000 square foot expansion to house a series of new test facilities
including a new hot/cold dynamometer
cell, cold soak room, ambient soak room,
chemical laboratory, clean room, vehicle air
lock room, barrel room, and fuel conditioning room. Electrical services for the building
are supported by a new 120 kV DTE substation which is being constructed directly for
The Superior Township facility is Hyundai’s core
research base for production and sales support in
North America. It is the hub for designing, planning and overall development of Hyundai and KIA
automobiles for the North American market.
Acting as the project’s general contractor, Aristeo
self-performed project concrete and excavation,
and is working with our valued speciality contractor to complete the facility in accordance with
the owner’s requirements.
Aristeo is delighted to support Hyundai on this
project and looks forward to a developing relationship with our newest auto client.

I began working with my father in construction when I was twelve
years old, and from him I learned a great deal about the skills required
to be a tradesman. More importantly, I learned the intangible skills
that would serve me well throughout my career—how to treat others,
how to demonstrate integrity, and how to earn people’s trust by
always being honest and doing the right thing. The above quote has
served as a mantra for both me personally and for the company as a
whole, and has allowed us to grow into the trusted contractor we are
today.
Trust is the most important part of our business. A trusting relationship is what we strive to build every day with our clients, subcontractors, and business associates. It takes a lot of hard work, training, and
vigilance to maintain our standards, but at Aristeo, we know no other
way of doing business. We value our client’s trust beyond all else, and
will always keep our clients’ best interests at heart.
All companies have mission, vision or ethics statements, but the
challenge is to bring these statements to life and make them part of
the choices we make every day. Acting with complete integrity is not
always easy and is often undefinable, but throughout the company is
a well understood principle that always guides our path. As we enter
into a new year, I want to thank all of our employees for living by my
father’s words, and thank our clients and business partners for the
trust they have placed in us.

The benefits of BIM to our customers are considerable.
During the pre-construction phase it allows for a quick
way to determine cost and schedule feasibility with
various configurations to find the best value. The quality
of the design is greatly improved and the visualization
aspect allows key decisions to be made earlier in the
process. As the model incorporates all of the trades, it
compels early coordination that detects clashes of the
various systems that can save up to 10% of the construction value due to reduced field changes.

BIM Technology
The accuracy of the model increases productivity during
construction and can reduce the construction schedule
up to 7% while greatly reducing change orders. Any
changes that are needed to accommodate varying owner
manufacturing requirements can be quickly implemented
and are automatically updated throughout the drawings.
The next generation of design and management of a
construction projects is upon us. The days of hauling and
marking up 2D drawings is gone and the digital age of
developing, reviewing, pricing, scheduling, and managing
a project in a 3D environment is the new normal. Building
Information Modeling (BIM) is the development of a
project in a digital 3D environment that incorporates the
physical and functional characteristics of a facility. While
the technology is still being refined, the reduced cost and
ease of use of these systems has made BIM a industry
mainstay.
PROJECT
Aristeo has been involved with BIM projects for many
years. Our steel division has used these integrated
models to feed the automated equipment in our shop for
fabrication. The Lima Engine Program has used BIM extensively to integrate the existing structure with the new
mechanical and electrical systems to help avoid costly
field rework while reducing the schedule.

The different levels of BIM allow the model to be used
not only in facility construction, but construction schedule integration (4D), project pricing (5D) and even long
term facility management (6D). The ability of the model
to contain “smart” objects allows the system to feed a facility maintenance program for preventive maintenance,
energy management and space planning for production
changes. This ability to fully integrate the entire life cycle
of the building into a single program model will help owners greatly reduce building lifecycle costs.
The advantages of BIM are numerous for not only the
construction process but for the long term efficiency
of the facility as well. Many of our clients have used
BIM extensively with great results. The continued use
and even deeper integration of this process in all of our
projects can benefit all of our clients. The use of BIM in
an integrated delivery system that incorporates all the
systems in a facility into one program and model can take
the efficiency and sustainability of a facility to an even
higher level while reducing waste and maintenance costs.
Although the construction industry has been behind the
curve in adopting new technology, these tools can jump
us ahead and bring genuine value to our clients.

In the Bucket
In January 2013, Aristeo
launched a safety awareness
and organizational tool for
all of our projects. The “Safe
Work Bucket” will assist project teams in staying organized
with safety paperwork and will
increase the safety awareness
of our work crews. The safety
work bucket will be utilized
on all new projects starting
January 1, 2013. Below is a
brief description of how the
program will work.
PROCESS
• The task Foreman or Superintendent will have a
YELLOW TAG.
• The Journeymen will have a WHITE TAG.
• Apprentices will have a GREEN TAG.
• Foreman must review PTA and all other relevant safety
information with employees on a daily basis and verify
employees fully understand the safety procedures and
hazards.
• Employee will attach their tag to the bucket acknowledging they understand the safety information the
bucket contains.
• The safe work bucket will be strategically located in the
task work area.
• If an employee goes to a new task they take their tag off
the safe work bucket, read the next task’s PTA then sign
the PTA and place their tag on new bucket.

People Profiles
Dan Sternberg joined Aristeo in November as a Senior
Project Manager. Born and raised in Rockland, ME, Dan
graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology with a
Bachelors in Civil Engineering Technology. Dan brings over
24 years of industrial and heavy civil construction experience. He and his wife Emily have two sons, Billy (8), Dan
(7). Dan enjoys watching his favorite football team, the
New England Patriots, golfing, fishing and coaching his sons
baseball and football teams.
