Sue Churchich (Belfair GC) and Dawn Woodard (Thornblade Club) shot rounds of 73 and 69 and
finished tied with Lea Venable (Holly Tree CC) and Tiffany Robbins (Ft. Mill GC) who shot rounds of
71 & 71. It took 8 playoff holes, the most in WSCGA history, for Churchich and Woodard win the 2016
WSCGA State Team Championship, their 3rd consecutive Title and 4th overall.
The playoff was a sudden death and played on hole 18. The two teams battled through the first 4
playoff holes with each team making spectacular shots and putts to keep the playoff going. On the 5th
playoff hole they were moved back to the black tees and a yardage of 357. Still the teams tied the 5th
and 6th playoff holes. They were then moved back again to the white tees at 397. Both Woodard and
Venable commented that they were more comfortable with this yardage and welcomed the change.
Yet, the teams tied the 7th playoff hole. On the 8th playoff hole, Robbins soared the green and lift it left
in the rough and Venable was just short and left of the green in a bunker. Churchich hit a poor tee
shot into the woods and was lying short of the green in 3, but there was no need for her to worry
because her partner, Woodard, put her second shot 1-foot from the hole. Venable and Robbins had
great chip shots and were within 5 feet but they couldn’t get it inside of Woodard’s ball. Woodard
easily made the putt for the victory.
The teams of Lea Anne Brown and Colleen Estes and Leigh Coulter and Karen Ferree also had a
playoff to determine 1st play in the 1st flight. They played the 18th hole at the yardage of 303 and it
took 2-holes for Brown & Estes to win their flight.
