The Barber: Joe Magnetico, Journeymen Players Club
edestrians passing by the large front window of Olde
Tyme Barbers on East 41st Street in Midtown Manhattan
might notice the LeRoy Neiman golf print hanging on
the wall by the first chair, along with the golf trophies in front of
the mirror. These are conversation starters for Joe Magnetico,
who has been cutting hair in this location for more than 20 years
and says a good portion of his clients are golfers just like him.
Magnetico is a third-generation barber. The business was
previously owned by his father, and a steady stream of
regulars keeps Magnetico and the other five barbers in the
shop busy from early morning to late afternoon. But

whenever he gets a chance, he talks golf. “Having a barber
shop here in Manhattan has given me the luxury of being
invited to a lot of great clubs…I’ve played Winged Foot and
Westchester. I used to be a competitive softball player, but
golf is a game that I can play for life.”
Magnetico was a co-founder of a new MGA member club
without real estate, Journeymen Players. “We’re up to 37
members — all sorts of people, including doctors, lawyers,
and plain working guys like myself. We try to have an event
every month, and there’s great camaraderie.” Sounds like the
type of atmosphere found in a traditional barber shop.

t takes focus, dedication, and more than a little good
fortune to win a club championship. It also takes
time, as each of the 711 MGA club champions in
2007 can surely attest. Many of these champions,
who are listed in alphabetical order by club on the
following pages, have careers that take them away
from the fairways and greens more than they’d like. But as
you’ll see with the six that we’ve chosen to profile, the jobs
that they call their own add another layer to their lives that
they wouldn’t trade for all the club championship hardware
in a trophy case.

The Coach: Maryanne Lynch, The Apawamis Club
or Maryanne Lynch, the decision to leave her job at
PepsiCo in White Plains, N.Y., in 1991 was a fortuitous
one. It led her to golf, which in turn led to an entirely
different level of success, both on and off the course. Lynch
bought her first set of clubs after exiting the corporate world,
and this year’s club championship was her seventh at
Apawamis.
It’s a winning percentage that the high-school age golfers
at Rye Country Day School (below), where Lynch is in her
third season coaching the boys’ golf team, are striving to
match. In Lynch’s first two seasons as coach, they were the
champions of the Fairchester Athletic Association and also

A
golfers in the city, but there wasn’t really a place where they
could practice and work with a team of professionals to get
overall balance in their games,” explains Saladino, who now
helps his brother with some of the training in addition to
handling the office work. The club has a full floor of fitness
equipment along with five golf simulators and two practice
greens.
Saladino’s business has definitely helped his game. “I’m a
better player now,” he says, “and it’s nice that I’ve won the
Long Island Golf Association Player of the Year award the
two years that the club has been open.” It’s safe to say that
Saladino isn’t just an owner, he’s also a client.
JIM KRAJICEK
few years ago, Joe Saladino began to take a more
dedicated approach to fitness in order to improve
his golf game. He got results, including his second
club championship this year at Huntington. Together with his
brother, Don, they founded a private club called Drive 495 in
Manhattan in the spring of 2006 — “he was the trainer, and I
was the golfer,” says Saladino, 26. Their goal is to help other
golfers reach their potential through increased fitness.
It’s clear the market is there, as the club has been a
success and was recently certified by the Titleist
Performance Institute (TPI), one of the leading golf research
and fitness facilities in the game. “There are so many
won the New York State championship for private schools. It’s
something that Lynch could not have envisioned when she
took the job three years ago. “I knew a lot about golf but
didn’t know a lot about high school boys, she says. “The only
boys I knew were the ones who dated my two daughters.”
The boys and Lynch have formed a strong bond — “I don’t
teach them golf, but I teach them how to compete,” she says.
A few of them even came out to Apawamis to root her on in
the finals of the club championship, where she was three
down with five holes to play but rallied for a 1-up victory. It
just goes to show that the coaching on this team goes in both
directions.

clothing companies clustered in this bustling neighborhood.
“The business was so different then,” remembers Kramer.
“Now, most of the manufacturing is in China, but we’ve
been able to adapt and carve out a place for ourselves in the
U.S. market,” he says as he stands among rows of highquality fabrics stretching to the ceiling.
At Trump National-Bedminster, where Kramer joined in
2004, he is already a three-time club champion, winning in
’04 and ’05 before this year. Kramer carries an 0.2 Handicap
Index and qualified to play in the 2007 U.S. Mid-Amateur at
Bandon Dunes, though there’s still another hill left to climb:
“I’ve never played against Donald Trump in a club
championship match,” he says. There’s always next year.

Florida Southern College, the same school attended
by Lee Janzen, Rocco Mediate and Marco Dawson.
But Kramer never considered trying for a spot on Tour.
Instead, Kramer’s workplace is a textile company in
Manhattan’s Garment District, meaning the only cuts
Kramer has to worry about making are the ones that
ensure his fabrics are the correct measurements for his
clients.
Kramer is president of Guide Fabrics, a company started
by his grandfather in 1961. After graduating from Florida
Southern with a degree in finance, he learned the ins and

n a sprawling hilltop estate just off
the New York Thruway near Woodbury
Commons sits CINAR Kennels, a
successful business that trains English cocker
spaniels for pheasant and quail hunting. “A lot
of our business is local, but many of the dogs
we raise also get sold to people out west, in
Idaho and Montana.” The kennel is co-run by
Joyce Hurley and her husband, Jack, and the
Hurleys’ love of dogs is equaled only by their
love of golf.
This summer, Joyce Hurley won the club
championship at Osiris Country Club, where
the Hurleys have been members for 15 years.
It was Joyce’s 29th career club championship,
dating back to her previous club affiliations at
Otterkill, Stony Ford and Central Valley. “I took
up golf when I was 10,” she says. “Everyone in
my family played, so it was either take up golf
or get left behind!” While she won her
championship match on the 14th hole, the
semifinal went to four playoff holes before
Hurley was able to emerge with a victory.
Before taking over the kennels, Joyce
worked for 15 years at Good Samaritan
Hospital in Suffern, N.Y., where she eventually
rose to the position of Vice President of
Operations. But when the opportunity arose to
take over the well-established kennel that had
been operating in the area since 1939, the
Hurleys jumped at the chance. And the
residents of the kennel seem to be jumping
for joy.

It has been nearly a century since Mercer Reynolds Sr. built a lodge for his family on a quiet spot east of
Atlanta, halfway to Augusta. The family named the lodge “Linger Longer” and it became a beloved place
for enjoying the area’s natural beauty to relax and pursue outdoor activities like hunting and fishing.

this year. He took up golf at age 11 and become an avid
player in his 30’s. Lucky for him, he found a home at one of
the most famous public courses in the country. “If it wasn’t
for Bethpage, I don’t think I’d be playing golf. It’s a great
facility, and I’ve met a lot of people playing there.”
Birmingham’s championship match on the Black Course
went to extra holes, and he won it on the difficult par-three
17th hole, which during the 2002 U.S. Open was the scene
of several loud ovations and plenty of drama. It’s
appropriate, then, that the Bethpage champion is this 16year veteran of law enforcement, for whom a little drama is
all in a day’s work. ■

n Mike Birmingham’s “office,” there are not many chances
to practice putting on a carpet or talk golf around the
water cooler. That’s because Birmingham is a sergeant in
the NYC Sheriff’s Department, and his days are normally
spent on patrol. “We handle traffic control, and then we
spend a couple days a week in various neighborhoods
around the city cracking down on counterfeit merchandise
sold on the streets,” says Birmingham of his typical week.
Though Birmingham says he appreciates that his job allows
him to help people, golf is certainly a pleasant diversion.
He hones his game on the fairways at Bethpage State
Park, where he won the Bethpage Golf Club championship
