HEARING ASSISTANCE DEVICES
We have hearing assistance devices for parishioners to
borrow during Mass to make it easier to hear the service. We
have eight wireless devices which can be borrowed from an
usher for the duration of the Mass. The devices should be
returned at the end of Mass. The wireless device requires an
earphone or head-set to accompany it. These items connect to
the wireless device and can be purchased with a $10 donation.
The earphone or head-set is kept by the parishioner and
should be brought to Mass each week for use with the
borrowed wireless device. Please see an usher if you wish to
use the hearing assistance device.

in the family of the Church.
May your grace and love help our families in every part of the
world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy Family,
with the aid of your Holy Spirit,
guide all families, especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek your truth and live in your love.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

World Meeting of Families
Host Families Wanted at OLG
You can easily participate in this event. Our parish has
engaged in a relationship with a tiny parish in Stowe, VT,
Blessed Sacrament Church. Some of their members have
visited Doylestown and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and
believe this to be the best place to be during the WMOF
event in September. There are eight families looking for an
opportunity to meet you. You can help them and make their
pilgrimage possible.
Details and application forms are available at the OLG
Information Booth in the narthex after mass. If you have
further questions, please feel free to contact Linda and John
Gray at 215-766-2057 or [email protected].

The following information is catechesis on the Papal
Office to help prepare for the Pope’s visit during the
World Meeting of Families
FOUR BUSES ARE FILLED!
Name the Popes who reigned during
the 20th century.
The Popes who reigned during the twentieth century include
Leo XIII, who reigned as Pope from 1878 to 1903; St. Pius X,
who reigned from 1903 to 1914; Benedict XV, who reigned
from 1914 to 1922; Pius XI, who reigned from 1922 to 1939;
Pius XII, who reigned from 1939 to 1958; St. John XXIII, who
reigned from 1958 to 1963; Blessed Paul VI, who reigned
from 1963 to 1978; John Paul I, who reigned as Pope for only
thirty-three days in 1978; St. John Paul II, who reigned from
1978 to 2005; and Pope Benedict XVI, who reigned from 2005
to 2013.
Why do we say that the Pope is the
visible source and foundation of
unity?
This statement is taken from one of the documents of the
Second Vatican Council, the Dogmatic Constitution on the
Church (Lumen Gentium, 23). The Pope, that is, the Bishop of
Rome and Successor of St. Peter, is “the perpetual and visible
source and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of
the whole company of the faithful.” This refers to the fact that
by the decision of Christ, St. Peter is charged with confirming
the faith of the brethren.
Papal teaching through the centuries has proclaimed the faith
of the Church and has been the center of unity and peace in
guarding the truth of Christ.
Why does the Pope permanently
reside in Rome?
Since the Pope is the successor of Saint Peter who was the
Bishop of Rome, he, like Saint Peter, lives in Rome. Rome is
also the city where both Saints Peter and Paul were martyred.
What is Vatican City?
The State of Vatican City is the territorial seat of the papacy. It
happens to be the smallest sovereign state in the world.
Situated within the city of Rome, it embraces an area of 108
acres. Within its limits one finds the following buildings: the
Vatican Palace, museums, art galleries, libraries, a radio
station, post office, bank, astronomical observatory, offices,
apartments, service facilities, St. Peter’s Basilica, and
neighboring buildings between the Basilica and the Viale
Vaticano. The extraterritorial rights of Vatican City extend to
more than ten buildings (including the major basilicas and
office buildings of various congregations of the Roman Curia)
and to the papal villas at Castel Gandolfo, the summer
residence of the Holy Father that is located fifteen miles
southeast of the City of Rome.

How to make raising 15 children look easy
By Lou Baldwin
If you are thinking of inviting Paul and Margaret Anne Waltrich
over for a barbecue and suggesting they bring the family, you’ll
need a very big yard. Paul and Margaret Anne have 15 kids and
they are all adults ranging from 53 years to 33 years in age, most
of them have spouses, and you would have to make room for the
48 grandchildren too.
Paul was original from St. Luke Parish in Glenside, while
Margaret Anne Noonan was from St. Athanasius in Philadelphia’s West Oak Lane section, and that’s where they married
almost 55 years ago. They honeymooned in Bermuda, but that
was the last distant vacation they would have for quite some time.
Neither was from a large family, but from the very beginning they
were open to the idea. Paul has a degree in engineering and a
career mostly at Stokes Vacuum Inc., an industrial vacuum
equipment firm, before retirement. Margaret Anne was a secretary. “I stopped working when we got married,” she said.
What she really means is she stopped collecting a salary; raising
15 active kids is definitely work. The family settled in a big fivebedroom house in Upper Moreland — more than adequate for
most families but in this case “there were a lot of bunk beds,”
Margaret Anne said.
All were born at Holy Redeemer Hospital and none were twins –
identical, fraternal or Irish (born within a 12-month span). Fourteen of them went to St. John Bosco School, Hatboro, and then on
to Archbishop Wood High School, followed by college. Katrina,
their middle child, did not because she has Down syndrome and
needed special education. Yes, as a special needs child she required more attention, but the family pulled together with the
older children spoiling her and the younger children as playmates.
Everybody chipped in. One of Paul’s tasks was to prepare the
school lunches, no small matter considering for a time there were
seven kids at once at St. John Bosco. Between lulls on Sunday
football games he would make the sandwiches, and put them in
the freezer to be doled out during the week.
The kids were all active in school sports and clubs; some of the
girls helped out in the rectory, boys volunteered in the school. St.
John Bosco no longer has a school but at this time there are eight
grandchildren at Wood with seven already graduated.
Faith was an integral part of family life. Paul recently received his
50-year pin from Malvern Retreat House. “My wife’s brother
Frank got me into it,” he said. “I go with the St. Joseph Group
and now some of my sons come too. It’s a good time to get away
and think about my spiritual life.”
Frank still lectors at St. John’s, and in past years he and Margaret
Anne conducted Pre-Jordan and Pre-Cana sessions (prep
programs for baptism and marriage, respectively) and also
participated in RCIA, CYO and CCD for the mentally challenged.
They stopped when the friends of their children began coming to
Pre-Cana because it seemed too personal.
For Paul and
Margaret Anne the
biggest challenge
of such a large
family was not
financial or physical. It was
spending as much time as
possible with each child. “We
didn’t want anyone to feel they were one of a group,” Margaret
Anne said. “We wanted them to feel as individuals and each of
them had something special to bring to the family.”
Because there were so many, the children naturally divided
themselves into age groups and they learned to share, and they
became a support group for each other. Through helping Katrina,
their parents believe, they learned compassion, tolerance,
empathy and humility. As adults they still enjoy each other’s
company and three children — Amy, Theresa and Maryanne —
are neighbors on the same street.
With such a huge three-generational family there is always something to celebrate — somebody’s birthday, somebody’s
graduation, somebody’s First Communion. “We’ve just had one
college, two high school and two grade school graduations this
year,” Margaret Anne said. “Three years ago we had six granddaughters making First Communion in the same month. This year
we had three First Communions on the same day in three different churches.”
One son Greg, who is now the father of seven himself, said, “I
know there is an old adage you can choose your friends but not
your family. But I was lucky by having the family I wound up
with and would choose them again given the chance. Dad and
Mom handled it as a team and with a lot of love, patience and
faith.” If at times as a child Greg thought his parents overreacted
to a situation, he now realizes as a father himself they were spot
on and did just as he would do today.
A favorite childhood memory was his father coming home from
work with a cheerful “Hello everybody.” If the dinner was
shepherd’s pie, he would say, “The only thing I love more than
shepherd’s pie is your mother.”

Back when they were growing up family vacations tended to be
close to home, the shore, the mountains or an amusement park.
The family just had one station wagon, and in those days before
mandatory seat belts and other regulations the kids would just pile
in with the little ones sitting on the laps of the bigger ones.
