enriching and improving the lives of
every member of our community.
“A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JFS”
Message from the President
and the Chief Executive Officer
Today, more than 1,800 volunteers, staff, donors and friends of Jewish Family Service
touch the lives of many of the most vulnerable in Los Angeles. An older neighbor who
lives alone needs a friendly visit and a home-delivered meal. A new mother and her tiny
newborn need support and guidance to adjust to their new life together. A recently laidoff mortgage broker and single parent needs counseling to cope with terrifying changes
of circumstance. A family of immigrants needs fresh groceries to help feed and school
supplies to help educate their children. A spouse terrorized and threatened needs a safe
refuge and the skills to gain safety and self-sufficiency.
These are the people who walk through the doors of JFS and are welcomed to the
JFS family with warmth and compassion.
Each day, new individuals and families turn to JFS for help and are met by skilled
professionals and dedicated volunteers committed to our mission and values. Each
person faces different challenges; each story is unique. Some simply need a warm
meal and a good conversation; others need to rebuild a life torn apart by violence and
poverty. Each and every one of them deserves to be treated with dignity and respect—
and JFS is there for them.
On behalf of each of them, we say thank you. Thank you to our partners, donors,
volunteers, board members and staff for making it possible for JFS to help those in
need. Your dedication, generosity, and friendship enables us to look at every person and
see hope, not symptoms. We look forward to continuing to respond to new challenges
and exploring new opportunities to serve those in need, regardless of gender, race,
religion, or socioeconomic background, in the year ahead.
And if you or someone you know need our help, please call JFS at (877) ASK-4JFS
or visit our website, www.jfsla.org.

January
Nearly 200 people showed
their support for Jewish
Family Service of Los Angeles
at the 2nd annual JFS {
Empowerment event, held
on January 27th, 2011 at the
Olympic Collection. Guests
joined JFS in honoring Former
State Senator Sheila J.
Kuehl, celebrated the birthday
of Abby J. Leibman, and
honored the memory of Nina
C. Leibman, raising thousands
of dollars for the JFS {
Family Violence Project. 2
March
May
July
On March 22nd, 2011, JFS { Cafe
Europa celebrated Purim with
laughter, dancing, entertainment,
and lunch. Nearly 250 JFS { Café
Europa members participated in
the celebration, held at Temple
Beth Hillel, and particularly
enjoyed their Mishloach Manot
gift bags, generously provided
by the students of Heschel Day
School. A
great time
was had
by all!
The 19th Annual JFS Gala Tribute
Dinner was JFS’s most successful
ever, raising $1.3 million for our
essential programs and services.
On Thursday, May 19th, 2011,
nearly 600 guests showed their
support for JFS at the event, which
was chaired by Sara Aftergood
and Monique Maas Gibbons.
During the evening’s program, JFS
paid tribute to Todd M. Morgan,
presenting him with the Spirit of
Humanity Award, and a group of
dedicated volunteers from JFS {
Café Europa, who were honored
with the Anita & Stanley Hirsh
Award for their years of service to
the program. The event concluded
with a special
musical
performance
by the Grammy
Award Winning
singersongwriter
Natalie Cole,
and included
a surprise
appearance
by musical
sensations
The Canadian
Tenors.
As of July 1st, 2011, the Felicia
Mahood Multipurpose Center, an
existing neighborhood senior center
located in West Los Angeles,
officially became a part of Jewish
Family Service of Los Angeles. JFS
{ Felicia Mahood provides a full
range of services for older adults
in the community, including special
programs for the Farsi speaking
community, care management,
counseling, support groups,
information and referral, advocacy,
transportation, home delivered
meals and lunch at several
community dining sites, among
other resources. JFS { Felicia
Mahood is a unique public-private
partnership, as the facilities are
owned by the L.A. City Department
of Recreation and Parks.
JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE } Annual Report 2010–2011
August
More than 700 people participated
in the JFS/Westfield Century City
Back to School Community Day
on August 14th, 2011. During
the event, spearheaded by JFS
{ Young Leaders, nearly 400
children had the opportunity to
fill their backpacks with brandnew school supplies for the
upcoming school year as part
of our JFS { Tools For School
initiative. Throughout the day,
more than 200 volunteers staffed
the various tents and stations,
helping JFS client families stock
up on new clothes and shoes and
essential supplies to help support
and encourage their school-age
children.
October
November
December
In October 2011, JFS was
awarded one of three prestigious
Agency of the Year awards by the
Alliance for Children and Families,
an international membership
association representing more
than 350 child- and family-serving
organizations. JFS was chosen
to receive the award due to our
demonstrated excellence in board
participation and support; impact
through advocacy efforts on local
and state issues; and innovative
programming.
Lines stretched down the block
at each of our three JFS { SOVA
locations the week before
Thanksgiving, where people in
need lined up for a special holiday
giveaway. More than 24,000
pounds of food were distributed
on November 17th, 2011, with
JFS { SOVA staff and volunteers
working overtime to make sure
each client received a bag of
groceries filled with Thanksgiving
items, including a turkey or
chicken, cranberry sauce, stuffing,
gravy, potatoes, and more.
For the 16th consecutive year, JFS
{ Adopt-A-Family made an impact
on the lives
of hundreds
of families in
Los Angeles.
Many of our
generous
donors
anonymously
“adopted” a
family in need,
providing them
with basic necessities and small
gifts in time for the December
holiday season. An unprecedented
number of families were referred
to the program this year, and as
a result, nearly 200 families were
able to celebrate the holidays with
JFS’s help.
More than 300 women enjoyed
a special day at JFS { Family
Violence Project’s Annual Shop
For A Cause Boutique on October
11th, 2011. Every October for
the past six years, JFS { FVP has
hosted this event to raise funding
and awareness for domestic
violence, and this year, sales from
nearly 25 vendors helped raise
funds for our shelters.

7:05 AM
Early in the morning, JFS { SOVA clients begin lining up outside each of our three SOVA locations.
Pantry doors won’t officially open for two more hours, but clients arrive early to stake a place in line
for bags filled with nutritious food and other essentials.
Donors
The great sage Rabbi Tarfon said, “It is not your obligation
to complete the task, but neither are you at liberty to desist
from it.” The task of tikkun olam, the healing of our world,
is a daunting one, but each of us must do our part.
JFS offers our sincere thanks to our most generous donors
whose names are listed in the pages of this report. This is a
list of financial donations only, made between July 1, 2010–
June 30, 2011. Every effort has been made to ensure proper
recognition to each donor; we apologize for any errors.
We would also like to gratefully acknowledge the thousands of
individuals who have given gifts up to $250, donors of goods
and services, those who wish to remain anonymous, those
who give of their time, and others who support our work
whose names do not appear in this report.

JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE } Annual Report 2010–2011
About The Photographer:
Austin Hargrave
Austin Hargrave is from Manchester, England.
He has also lived in some other places for a
while—Madrid in Spain and Cardiff in Wales, and
some less glamorous cities. His first photography
job was for a local photographer in Newbury
in the UK, where he developed lots and lots of
rolls of black and white film by hand. One of
his first assignments was photographing an
environmental activist in a treehouse protesting
the building of a road that Austin now drives on
when he goes back.
He loves photography and does not really think of
it as work, but he tells people that’s what he does
for work when they ask. He lives in Los Angeles
and shoots regularly for various publications and
media companies.
