Message from the President
Jai Mata ki Devotees,
“Say it with pride : we are Hindus”, is what Swami Vivekananda taught his
fellow Hindus and also claimed “I am proud to belong to a religion which
has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance.
My humble Namaste to all of you. It is an honor and privilege to
serve this temple for the past four months. My sincere thanks to all of
you for your support, participation and donations for our Temple events.
This temple is run on your generosity and I want to thank from the bottom
of my heart for your time and dedication in serving this Temple.
For the first time in our templeís history we organized a fund raiser for
Vidya Vikas. It was a very well planned cultural evening with food, fun
and cultural program by the Vidya Vikas children. I would like to thank
all the participants: children, choreographers, parents, volunteers and
donors. I would also like to recognize the dedicated group of 100 volunteer
teachers and Vidya Vikas administrators for their selfless services. Our
Vidya Vikas with over 700 students, is run only by volunteers. I invite all
the parents of young children to take advantage of the Vidya Vikas
Program and facilities to teach culture and heritage to our children.
We just finished celebrating Shiv Sahasra Linga Mahotsav - a three day
celebration - in our Temple. This Mahotsav was a great success and
devotees felt as if they were in Kailash. The celebration became more
special due to the divine presence of Karunamai Amma. Amma not only
blessed devotees but participated in Shiv Abhiskem and Maha Rudram
Homam. Having Ammaís presence during this event was blessing to temple
and devotees.
The year 2012 started with the New Year Puja. We had a record
participation and collection. We celebrated Vaikuntha Ekadashi, Lohri,
and Vasant Panchami in the month of January. By Lord Shivaís grace
Mahashivaratri was on Monday and celebrations were on Sunday. On
Saturday a special Mahamrtyunjaya Yagna was performed for the benefit
of our devotees. Our volunteer Dilip Flint and Hariniji created special
Mount Kailash Pandaal structure for Mahashivratri. True to our traditions
back home, Holika Dahan and Holi Celebrations were conducted in a
grand manner. It was wonderful to realize that the majority of participants
were our youth. It was thrilling to see them dancing and playing with
colors. The month of March ended with celebration of Chaitri Navratri,
Ugadi, Gudi Padva, Durga Jagran, Durga Ashtami Havan, Akhand
Ramayan, and Sita - Rama Kalyanam. The month of April began with
Ram Navami celebrations, Thyagaraja Aradhana followed by Tamil New
Year, Ashottarashata Hanuman Chalisa Parayan, Vallabhacharya Pragatya
Mahotsav and Akshaya Tritiya. Monthly Jagganath pujaís are conducted
by the Oriya community with great devotion.
I would personally like to thank all the event chairs , co-chairs, and
volunteers for their hard work. I also like to thank our generous sponsors,
our priests, managerial and janitorial staff. I also like to acknowledge my
sincere gratitude to our excellent team of Executive Committee members
and members of Board of Trustees who take pride in working together
and doing what is best for the temple and our devotees.
We are working hard to meet the needs of our devotees and are planning
to bring a number of new events including Hanuman Puran Katha, Grand
celebration of Ganesh Mahotsav, religious discourses, Dhanwantri Havan
and Yagnas along with regular events. Kindly keep an eye on email from
our Temple as well as periodically check the web-site
www.dfwhindutemple.org for the upcoming events.
I encourage all of you to consider volunteering your services
to the temple and be a part of the future management team. If you have
any suggestions or comments please feel free to email me at
[email protected].
With best wishes

The Path of Ethical Discipline
Hari OM!
“You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other
teacher but your own soul”.
-
Swami Vivekanand
One of the major contributions of Maharshi Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is the eight-limbed Yoga, popularly known as
“Ashtanga Yoga”. When practiced with diligence, determination and devotion can bring about transformation from
inside out that Swami Vivekanand is telling us about. The eight limbs are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Yama (the disciplines)
Niyama (the injunctions)
Asana (the posture of the body)
Pranayam (the control of Prana, the life force)
Pratyahara (the restraint of senses from objects of enjoyment)
Dharana (focussing of mind)
Dhyana (de-concentration)
Samadhi (super consciousness)
The first five limbs came under “Bahiranga Yoga” (external) and are used for indirect control of mind. The last three
limbs are referred to as “Antaranga Yoga” (internal) where the mind is used directly for culturing itself. Thus eight limbs
of Yoga help man develop perfection at different levels of personality – physical, mental, emotional and intellectual and
simultaneously bring about spiritual progress.
“Ashtanga Yoga” is rooted in the notion of developing a positive personality and lays great stress on strengthening
inherent defensive mechanism of body and mind rather than attacking and eradicating individual offending factors. So
man enjoys positive health, and not just freedom from diseases. And what is the “Positive Health”? Positive Health does
not mean merely freedom from disease but jubilant and energetic sense of well-being with an amount of general resistance
and capacity to easily cultivate immunity against specific offending agent. It does not mean merely an ability to work
somehow but a capacity which does not allow a person to be sluggish or lazy.
Yoga lays great stress on this aspect thru the following 3 steps –
1. Cultivation of correct psychological attitudes – this is where the practice of Yama and Niyamas comes.
2. Reconditioning of neuromuscular and neuroglandular systems – whole physical body
3. Health giving diet
It is well known that there has been a rise in metabolic and psychosomatic disorders (like asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular
diseases, anxiety, depression, insomnia, migraine, menstrual disorders, tension headaches, thyroid disorders etc.). All
these are chronic disorders of adaptations (meaning one cannot adapt to the situations in life successfully). Science gives
you external help in the form of tranquilizers and substitution therapies. But Yoga says that the approach should be from
the other end, i.e. the organs of man have to be so trained as to be able to cultivate his own powers of adaptation and
adjustment.
According to Yoga, sustained internal tensions are a primary factor in lowering one’s resistance and creating disharmony
in various functions of the body. Yoga prescribes two prong approach to set them right - Yama and Niyama – as
psychological procedures on one hand and “Asanas” and “Pranayama” as physiological ones on the other hand.
“Yama” is the first limb of Maharshi Patanjali’s Ashtanga Yoga and means “taking a vow” or making a firm and solemn
decision to train and regulate mind, ego and intellect. “Niyama” is the second limb and means “rule of conduct”, meaning
cultivation of habits and attitudes. Yama and Niyama are interdependent and give a practical instruction for attaining
highest degree of psychological health.

YAMAS
7
The five yamas are the foundation of spiritual life. There is a deliberate order in them:
1. AHINSA: Non-Violence.
One must remove one’s brutal nature. Do not hurt anyone in action, speech or thought. Never blame others. Do
not use harsh words. To fail to relieve pain or trouble of someone else is negative hinsa. To approve of another’s
harsh actions is also against ahinsa. Develop cosmic love and practice ahinsa in its purest form.
2. SATTYA – Truthfulness
Thoughts must agree with words and words with actions. Assess in your mind before you speak. No exaggeration,
infatuation, or pretenses.
1. ASTHEYA – Non-stealing
This is self-restraint. Do not remove things secretly without the knowledge of the owner or those that do not
belong to you. Hoarding too much money, eating too much, adding to your cravings are all forms of stealing.
2. BRAHMACHARYA – Continence
It is restraint and not suppression of sexual desire. What is wanted is deep inner life. Open yourself to higher
spiritual consciousness. Pray for light, purity, strength, peace and knowledge. The aspirant is now becoming
super human through its practice.
3. APARIGRAHA: Non-covetousness
It is a mental state free from cravings, unnecessary wants, the desire to possess and enjoy. It will liberate one
from the worldly attachments and expand the heart manifold.
NIYAMA
1. SHAUCHA: Purity both internal and external.
Removal of lust, anger, greed, jealousy constitutes internal purity. It makes mind one-pointed. Attachment and
hatred when removed from heart instills love, patience and magnanimity. Reading scriptures and satsang will
help develop internal purity.
External purity generates internal purity. For e.g. a bath early in the morning, helps one to get into the meditative
mood quickly.
2. SANTOSHA: Contentment
It does not mean satisfaction, but willingness to accept things as they are and to make the best of them. It is a
powerful antidote for the poison of greed. It bestows peace and serenity and brings success in the practice of
Yamas.
3. TAPAS: Austerity
It also means restraint of senses and meditation. Tapas can be physical like fasting and observance of silence
which increases power of endurance. Mental strength is more powerful than physical strength. To keep balanced
mind in all conditions of life, to bear insult, injury and persecutions, to be ever serene, contended and peaceful,
to be cheerful in adverse conditions, to have fortitude in meeting change are all forms of mental tapas.
4. SWADHYAYA : Self-Study
14
Self-study is not just the study of scriptures but enquiry into the nature of the self, asking the question – “Who
Am I”? Study of Scriptures is indirect satsang. It clears the doubts and strengthens the flickering mind. It fills the
mind with Sattwa, inspires and elevates the mind. Cuts new grooves in the mind and makes the mind run in these
grooves.
7
5. ISHWARA PRANIDHANA: Surrender to God
Self-surrender is regarding every work as that of the Supreme Lord and renouncing all claims to its fruits. “I am
an instrument in your hands”, is the attitude of the devotee, that makes him one with the Lord.
Yama and Niyama are thus attitude forming moral foundation of the Ashtanga Yoga. This personal and interpersonal
code of conduct when practiced diligently, become internalized and realized and become part of one’s personality and
character, that helps remove mental and emotional disturbances and our inborn reactivity by reducing conscious emotional
conflicts. The mind becomes pure and one pointed and attains the state of steadiness, thus attaining perfection in Yoga.

Significance of Festivals

JANMASHTAMI
Janmashtami is the birthday of Lord Krishna, the re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu who gave us the vital
message of the Bhagwat Gita - the guiding principles for every Hindu. For celebrating Janmashtami
the rituals begin on the previous day with fasting, prayers and celebrations. Women do not cook on
this day, only cold food is served, which some modern thinkers believe is a way of commemorating the
childhood of Lord Krishna by spending time with children instead of in the kitchen. The excitement
begins at mid-night. Lamps are lit, idols of Lord Krishna are placed on elegant swing seats and prayer
rituals are performed in front of the idol, while the lord sways on his special seat, an act worshipping
Lord Krishna as an infant. People throng to the Krishna temples on this day to offer tributes to this reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, who came to earth as a human, and through his preaching to Arjuna gave
the world the message of Bhagvad Gita - the most revered book in Hinduism.
VARALAKSHMI VRATAM
The glory of performing the VARALAKSHMI VRATAM, narrated directly by Lord Shiva Himself, is
elaborately discussed in the Skanda Puranam. This is a festival to propitiate Shri Varalakshmi
(Mahalakshmi) - the consort of Lord Vishnu, who is the abode of all mangalam (auspiciousness),
prosperity and wealth. The Varalakshmi Vratam is to be performed on the Friday immediately following
the full moon day (Purnima) in the auspicious month of Shravanam (corresponding to August September). Lakshmi is symbolic of eight forces - wealth (shrI), earth (bhU), learning (sarasvati), love
(prIti), fame (kIrti), peace (shAnti), pleasure (tuShTi), and strength (puShTi). Each of these forces is
called a Lakshmi0, and collectively they are known as Ashta Lakshmi. Worship of Varalakshmi is
rendered equivalent to the puja for AshTalakshmi. Since She is ever ready to grant boons to her true
devotees, she is usually referred to as ìVara lakshmiî.
RAKSHA BANDHAN ******* AVANI AVITTAM ******* UPAKARMA
Raksha Bandan, literally meaning bond of protection, marks the day when Sachem, the consort of
lord Indri tied a holy amulet on his wrist to protect him from harm when he went to fight the demons.
Then Indra, the king of gods, gained victory over the demons by the power of this protection (Raksha
means ìprotectionî). The day celebrates the bond between brother and sister. The sister says special
prayers and ties colored threads called rakhi around the wrists of her brothers to remind them of the
special bond and their role as protectors of the family. He in turn gives a gift, which is a promise that he
will protect his sisters from any harm.
Avani Avittam in Tamil Nadu. This falls on the full moon day of the month of Sravan (August-September).
It is an important Hindu festival. Hindus wear a new holy thread and offer libations of water to the
ancient Rishis on this day. Recitation of the Vedas on this great day is highly beneficial. This festival is
also known as Upakarma, and is especially sacred to the Brahmins, who have been invested with the
sacred thread. When the Brahmin boy is invested with this holy thread, symbolically his third eye, or the
eye of wisdom, is opened. This festival of Upakarma reminds the wearer of the sacred thread of its
glorious spiritual significance. Brahmins also offer libations of water to their ancestors to whom they
owe their birth and to the great Rishis to whom they are highly indebted for their spiritual knowledge
and the Vedas themselves. The followers of the four different Vedas have their Upakarma on different
days.

MANAGLA GOWRI VRAT
Goddess Gowri is the proud Mother of Lord Ganesha. She is the very incarnation of Aadhi Shakthi
Mahamaya. She is the Shakthi of Lord Shiva. She is the most auspicious Goddess and hence called
Mangala-Gowri who blesses ladies devout to her with Maangalya (Mangala Suthra that is worn by all
ladies on the day they are wedded and as long as their husband lives). It is believed that on Gowri
Trateeya she, along with Lord Shiva, comes to the homes of devotees like any married girl coming to
her parents house. The next day Lord Ganesha, her son comes as if to take his parents back to their
abode (Kailasa). The mother and son stand for the greatest Bonding on earth between any mother
and her offspring. Mangala Gowri Vrat is always performed before Ganesha Chaturthi.
Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with a belief that Lord Ganesha, son of Shiva and Parvati, bestows His
blessings on His devotees, on this day. It is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha, the God of
wisdom. Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the fourth day of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, which falls around
August or September. The occasion becomes very lively and enthusiastic with the devotional songs,
dances and drum beats being a part of the procession observed by the devotees of Lord Ganesha, as
a part of the festivities. Ganesh Chaturthi is the only festival that involves and welcomes the participation
of general public.
Ganesh Chaturthi is an important festival of Maharashtra, celebrated grandly in other parts of India as
well. The preparation starts one month in advance, with great enthusiasm, to celebrate this auspicious
occasion. The festival starts with the installation of beautifully sculpted Ganesha idols in homes and
mandaps. These idols are decorated beautifully and show religious themes. The occasion also sees
various cultural events being held every where, in which people participate with interest. After celebration,
the time of farewell comes and the idol of the beloved God is immersed in water. The celebration ends
with the immersion, accompanied by loud shouts of ëGanapati Bappa Morayaí.
