The Classical Piano Concerto, Volume 1
of
Piano Concerto in G major, Op. 1; Piano Concerto in C major, Op. 29;
Piano Concerto in E flat major, Op. 70
Howard Shelley, Ulster Orchestra
Following on from Hyperion’s hugely popular ‘Romantic Piano Concerto’ series, the ‘Classical
Piano Concerto’ focuses on the lesser-known concertos from the dawn of the genre.
Between about 1770 and 1820 - the high classical period dominated by Mozart, Haydn and
Beethoven - musicians including Clementi, Cramer, Dussek, Steibelt and Woelfl made their
names as composers and performers of piano concertos. This series aims to be the first
CDA68027
in-depth recorded survey of this forgotten repertoire.

The Romantic Violin Concerto, Volume 16
BUSONI: Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35a; Benedictus from Beethoven's 'Missa Solemnis'
STRAUSS: Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 8
Tanja Becker-Bender
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Garry Walker
German violinist Tanja Becker-Bender returns to the 'Romantic Violin Concerto' series having dazzled
the critics with her 'great lyrical force and tremendous sense of drama' in her recording of the Reger
concerto. Here she appears with the Hyperion house band, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra,
conducted by Garry Walker in Volume 16; these concertos by Busoni and Strauss represent each
composers' only example of the genre.

death on the basis of three very different texts. Herzogenberg's Requiem, whose classic subject
is the 'Catholic Mass for the Dead', is a work best described as a Lutheran cantata drawing on
German texts from the Bible and hymn stanzas, as well as a poem of his own authorship.

L’Italiana in Algeri
Recorded live at the Pesaro Festival, August 2013
Anna Goryachova, Alex Esposito, Yijie Shi, Mario Cassi
Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, José Ramón Encinar, Davide Livermore
Pesaro’s new offering in 2013 was an off the wall production of Rossini’s popular comedy, ‘The Italian
Girl In Algiers’, presented as a Swinging Sixties, James Bond adventure, set in the desert oil fields of the
North African coast. Davide Livermore’s gag a minute, helter-skelter romp follows an alarmingly life-like
air crash, which delivers the ‘Italian Girl’ from Rome into the clutches of local oil baron, Mustafa. All
three lead singers thoroughly distinguish themselves – and the audience roar its approval of the evening’s
entertainment.

his tyrant’s crown.
From its mesmerising first moments to the last fulfilment of the witches’ prophecy, Shakespeare’s
gripping account of the profoundest engagement with the forces of evil enthrals the imagination.
