September 11, 2016 Welcome First Responders Offertory Observation… We can hear God speaking to us today in the words of the father to his elder son: “You are with me always, and everything I have is yours.” What is my response to such remarkable generosity? Robert This weekend we are starting with coffee and doughnuts after the 8 and 10 am Masses on Sunday. They were discontinued because of the financial situation our parish was going through. It has been busy with the Council of Catholic Women organizing a "shower" for the rectory. So many wonderful gifts, and even more important is the sentiment that you appreciate your priests, and while I can only speak for myself I am sure Fr. Jim would agree how humbling your care and concern for us is. We had a great first week of school. I almost caused a panic when I told the parents that this is Fr. Jim's last year here in a passing comment. Traditionally newly ordained priests are assigned for (2) three-year terms at different parishes before they are assigned as pastors. The bishop may extend his assignment here, move him to another assignment as an associate pastor, assign him to a special ministry outside of a parish, or make him a pastor. I took it for granted that in a parish this size you would be familiar with the typical cycle of assignments for newly ordained priests, not realizing that you have had some long term associates not so long ago. The seminary trains us to be pastors, and our bishop assigns us to parishes as newly ordained; not only to help out pastors of large parishes, but to learn from the parishioners, staff and brother priests how to be pastors. Last weekend’s bulletin showed a $70,000 deficit for the first month of the year. While this is an accurate number to report using a modified accrual method of accounting, it is somewhat misleading. The expenses include bills from last year that were paid in this new fiscal year, and it doesn't show the tuition income that has already been collected for next year. Technically the next months info should show reversal of fortune with a surplus. I will ask the finance council to determine a better method for sharing our financial position. We want to be "transparent" but we also want to give information that is easily understood. We have already begun with Fr. Harvey’s chili and will begin the work of baking the apple pies. This should be a learning experience for me, I will witness the experts at work. We welcome this weekend Brian Reynolds, who is sharing information with us about the Foundation for Children in Need in our annual mission appeal. You may use the envelopes provided and return them to the parish in the next couple weekends. A big thank you to the Knights of Columbus for arranging the Blue Mass for police officers, firefighters, and first responders. We are truly blessed to have such dedicated people serving our community. Without their professionalism and bravery this community would not be such a great place to live, work and worship. from Fr. Jim . . . . . Today’s Gospel reading is so rich! I was praying about which part of the Gospel to single out and write about and couldn’t pick one, so I decided to help you dive into this Scripture and allow Jesus to speak to you through it. This process of diving into Scripture is known as Lectio Divina. Just follow the steps below. Pick a Gospel story or passage (about 10-15 verses). In this case we’ll choose our Gospel from today, Luke 15:1-3, 11 -32. Remind yourself that this is the Word of God and that He desires to speak to you through it. Then read through the story slowly and deliberately. Pause and then read through the story slowly and deliberately again. Now and ask yourself, “What struck me in this story?” It could be a particular line, a question or phrase that one of the characters spoke, a particular character them self in this story, it could be the reaction of the disciples, it could simply be a single word. Spend just a moment reflecting on what it is Jesus is trying to say to you through this. Now comes the fun part. Read the story one more time, slowly and deliberately. When you’re done this time close your eyes and reconstruct the story in your mind. The goal here is to place yourself into the narrative. Now allow the story to play out in your mind’s eye. Where are you in the story? Are you a particular character/person? What are the thoughts and emotions you have as the story unfolds? What is Jesus saying to you? By way of example, here’s what my lectio divina looked like. As I place myself in the story I’m the older son, and I can feel the anger, jealousy, and envy welling up within me. This brother of mine wasted my Father’s money, he disrespected my Father, and now he’s being welcomed back?! Even more than that my Father has given him a party to welcome him back. My heart feels hard, I want to cry out how unfair all of this is. All these long years I have served the Father and He has never done anything like this for me. Then the Father looks at me and says, My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. My heart melts. God has given me everything, He is always with me, He loves me so much; but rather than focusing on those good things I’ve chosen to focus on the things I didn’t have. I run to my Father and embrace Him. Father, help me to recognize that I am always in Your presence and that You give me everything I need to serve You well. As you can see, some parts of the story are exactly the same, but some parts are God speaking directly to me and working in my mind and heart. Notice that as I place myself in the narrative I see, hear, smell, feel, and experience. I encourage you to try lectio divina with this Gospel passage and to continue to practice this form of prayer. It is also the week of Applefest and I have never seen so many wonderful people working together towards the same goal...supporting their parish. Please take time to stop at the Welcome Desk in the gathering space of the church and pick up a choir form to fill out ...whether you are a present choir member or want to join us for the first time. (please put in the basket provided) I mentioned last week that I need ‘all’ music turned in by Sept. 12th to the parish office, but by next weekend would be okay too. If you are afraid to join the choir alone then please bring a friend. Practice begins on Thursday, Sept. 22nd at 6:45—8:30 in the church choir loft. Musically Yours in Christ, Diane Helene Paulik …… 25th Page 6 Outreach Corner Deacon Terry . . . . . . Outreach works closely with many churches and social service agencies in our area to provide emergency assistance to those in need. By working together we can help more people and give more comprehensive help to those with acute needs. We work together much like a family. For example, I am one of five children to a father we adore. Every so often, an urgent need will arise that requires an "all hands on deck" approach. The need is assessed, a quote for the remedy is secured, phone calls are made, and the bill, in the words of my brother, is "whacked up" five ways, each according to his means. What would be a hardship or an impossibility for one, is achieved when we each take a part. That's pretty much how we work with our friends at churches and agencies in our community. Needs are assessed, solutions are talked through, phone calls are made, and each one determines what they can do to help. Just like in a family, we all help each other and nobody goes it alone. August Report, 2016 for St. John Outreach Total # of families/ individuals served 24 Total dollar amount paid by St. John Outreach $3,879.48 Total dollar amount from other sources: $4,869.00 ( churches, agencies, special gifts) Total dollar amount paid for client needs: $8,748.48 Special thanks to our friends at: Fenton United Methodist Church The Freedom Center St. Rita Catholic Church Fenton Area Resource and Referral Flint Jewish Federation Holy Family Catholic Church St. Matthew Catholic Church and to all St. John parishioners who so generously give to this ministry. Page 7 Education in Faith The Students and Staff of St. John School wish to thank all of the first responders who work tirelessly to keep us safe. Prayer on 9/11 God of love we place in your loving arms the thousands of innocent lives that were lost on that unforgettable morning of September 11, 2001. We also remember the courage of the countless men and women who put their lives at risk in order to rescue, alleviate and bring solace to the afflicted. Help us to continue to work for a world free from every form of hatred, violence and ignorance. May terrorism — in all its forms — disappear from the face of the earth. Amen. - Fr. It is getting closer to the time that the windows will be put into the rectory. With the varying temperatures in September, we are sure that Father Robert and Father Jim will be very happy when this event happens. If you drove by the rectory this week, you probably saw ladders all around the place. The crew from Dee Cramer was installing the equipment in the attic which will be part of the heating and cooling system. The asbestos abatement should have started some time this past week, getting rid of the old furnace. As stated before the amount for both of these projects is $41,500. With additional donations made this past week, the amount has been reduced to $11,625.If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to these projects please write “Rectory” on your check or envelope or choose the Rectory Repairs fund online. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. We are grateful for the continuing support from our parishioners, the Cramer Family, and the Council of Catholic Women for their help in taking care of our parish. We can’t wait for Father Robert’s open house. -Bob and Bev Juip Page 9 SEPTEMBER WEEKEND ROSARY COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN NEWS As we return to our routines and leave the “lazy hazy days of summer” behind , bring your concerns for the new school year to your Mother Mary, join us in praying the luminous mysteries of the Rosary one half hour before the 5:00 p.m., 8:00 a.m., and 10:00 a.m. weekend masses. Czajkowski, Vicar Genesee & Shiawassee Vicariate HUMAN TRAFFICKING—FOLLOW THE MONEY The September/October 2016 issue of "Popular Science" details the career of Chris White and his extraordinary work in uncovering the Dark Web. His assignment was to combat the Taliban and al-Qaida by finding ways to interrupt their encrypted online money stream - find where the money is coming from and going to. The 5 to 20 percent of the Web most use to access through search engines such as Google, Bing, etc. is considered the Deep Web with 2.5 million visitors daily. The Dark Web is hidden from search engines and used by hackers, criminals, and terrorists. The Dark Web specializes in goods that need to be bought and sold anonymously. The goods include drugs, weapons, credit and id cards, and yes - human lives. "High profits and low risk makes human trafficking one of the fastestgrowing and the most lucrative crimes on the planet; The U.N. recently estimated that trafficking nets $150 billion a year." Chris White developed a different kind of search engine to be used by government and law enforcement agencies. The many functions allowed law enforcement to summarize and cross-index information. Through this process, criminal activities are tracked until enough data is available to make arrests and convictions. Please pray to end all forms of Human Trafficking. Thanks very much to Craig Herring for organizing and taking care of all the particulars that being a chairperson of the MI Drive entails. As most of you know, Oct. 7th, 8th, & 9th is the weekend of this Fundraiser. Applefest is less than two weeks away and many groups are busy getting organized. The Knight’s Hall will again be used for Bingo. John Thomas has stepped up to chair that event. Also, during Applefest we will have a booth in the tent behind the raffle ticket sales to promote the Knight’s. This is being chaired by our membership director, Steve Ghostley. There are several other Applefest chair positions which are held by our Knights. The Blue Mass this Sunday is a chance for St. John Council 7418 and Assembly 2051 to ask God’s blessing and protection on all those who serve as police, firemen, EMS or any public safety position. A reception will be held after Mass. The October Country Breakfast has been scheduled for October 2nd, the first Sunday of October, due to a scheduling conflict in the Activity Center. There will also be a reception for new parish members after the 10 am Mass, which will provide a good time for the Knights to introduce themselves. On August 31st a New Family Meeting was held at the school. The Knights distributed scholarship checks totaling $6,650. The St. John Knights of Columbus Scholarship is distributed by the principal and approved by the Grand Knight and the three Trustees of our council. The Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund is made available to all current Knight’s families who have a child at St. John school. All Knights need to be aware of this scholarship opportunity because it is an easy way to help reduce your child’s tuition. Two students were each also awarded a $750 scholarship from the Nick French Memorial Essay Contest. To all parishioners who may be reading this bulletin: Men, if you are not already a Knight, you need to be. Ladies, you need to encourage your husbands to become a Knight. The perks are enormous. By working together, we donate hundreds of volunteer hours to worthy causes. With a little of your time and talent, we can become even more powerful than our council already is.
