Annual Report - San Leandro Education Foundation
Strengthen Community
Support Schools
2014-2015Annual Report
Inspire Students
A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
“Success is where preparation and opportunity meet.” I never thought I
would be quoting former race car driver Bobby Unser, but as I think about
what we as a community can do to support student success, his statement
really stood out. There are important roles for the community to play on both
ends of the success equation; preparation AND opportunity.
This year, as an organization, we began to focus more on how we can
support linking local companies and professionals to our schools not just for
financial support, but for directly enriching the education of San Leandro
students. We will continue developing this effort in 2015-16 by organizing
work-site visits for classes such as our metal shop classes to local advanced manufacturers,
bringing professionals in to the classroom to help with project based-learning, and continue our
new internship program.
This summer we welcomed four highly skilled interns to SLED for a six-week, stipended
internship. Bringing graphic design, photography, film making, and science skills, these high school
students impressed us every day with their creativity, ability and commitment. This Annual Report
is one example of their work and you can see more by visiting www.youtube.com/sledfund.
On behalf of the nearly 9,000 students in the San Leandro USD, thank you for supporting
student success through the San Leandro Education Foundation. And please, take a moment to
connect to us on FaceBook and sign up for our e-newsletter where you can see the amazing work
our students and teachers are doing everyday here in San Leandro.

The San Leandro Education Foundation believes that when a child succeeds, we all succeed. We understand that the vitality and future of San Leandro is directly linked to the quality of
its public schools. That’s why we have been bringing the community together since 2008 to help
all twelve schools in the San Leandro Unified School District. Here in San Leandro two out of three
families struggle to make ends meet. And half of all students are English Language Learners who
are challenged not only to learn the academic content but do so in their second language.
SLED serves as a conduit for community support, helping San Leandro students envision a
better future and realize their potiential. In addition to providing financial support to schools, SLED
organizes community volunteers and links proffessionals to the classroom to achieve its mission.
OUR MISSION
The Education Foundation’s mission is to identify and mobilize local, regional and national
resources in order to bring increased funding, innovative programming and strong partnerships to
San Leandro Unified School District’s public schools.
YOUTH
DEVELOPMENT
Today’s youth must navigate not only the “real world,” but also the “virtual world.” Now
more than ever they need support in developing socio-emotional skills.
Programs like Outdoor Education and Season of Service - Period of Peace SUPPORT our
student’s emotional, social and physical development; ensuring they graduate as confident, aware
and compassionate young adults.
S.T.E.A.M.
ENRICHMENT
STEAM Enrichment provides hands-on opportunities for students in the fields of Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art/Design and Mathematics. SLED knows how important it is to start a
love of these subjects at an early age.
SLED supports STEAM enrichment programs that INSPIRE students and help them envision
a different future for themselves. STEAM-focused Workplace Tours and Girls Robotics Camp are
two programs that bring STEAM to life for our students.
COMMUNITY
ENGAGEMENT
SLED understands that schools need more than just financial support - they also need the
time and talents of our community members. SLED creates positive opportunities to STRENGTHEN
the bonds between the community and its schools, acting as a conduit for organizations and
individuals. SLED organizes and recruits volunteers for classroom support and events such as
Beautification Day and the Elementary School Library Accelerated Reader Project.

MIGUEL HIPOLITO
Doing business in San Leandro
brings a smile to Dr. Miguel
Hipolito, much like the smiles he
helps bring to his patients. "I really
enjoy the sense of community,
the diversity of the people, and
the fact that San Leandro is very
family-friendly. San Leandro is
a tight knit community and it is
important that we support each
other, stay local and act local. I am
honored to support local schools
though SLED.”
Every Wednesday
Eat Out for Education
encourages the community to designate
Wednesday as a day
to dine together at local San Leandro restaurants. Each week one
school site is the beneficiary of the generosity of community and
businnesses working
together.
Kaiser Permanente supports
San Leandro schools with both
time and treasure. Each year
Kaiser employees turn out to
help spruce up schools at our
“Beautification Day.” In 201415, Kaiser was a lead sposor at
the Gala and Full STEAM Ahead
breakfast, and for a second
year, Kaiser awarded a $30,000
Community Benefit Grant to
the “Season of Service, Period
of Peace” program, truly
helping our community thrive.
Our deepest gratitude
goes out to our partners
who support and
champion
San Leandro public
schools!
Ghirardelli Chocolate Company has
been a generous supporter since
2012. This year they stepped up
even more, making a multi-year comitment of $25,000 a year to support SLED’s work. And for a second
year, they offered paid internships to
San Leandro High School alumni
enrolled in college - helping students
see San Leandro is a great place not
just to grow up, but to live and work.
Community Service is a key component of the work
force culture at TriNet. Burton Goldfield, CEO, knows that
volunteering in the community helps to inspire
employees. That’s why TriNet has partnered with SLED
to create an outdoor classroom/garden at Jefferson
Elementary and is an annual participant at the SLUSD
Beautification Day. Visit www.YouTube.com/sledfund to
watch a great mini-documentary on TriNet’s garden project.
