From our
PRESIDENT
As part of Elmwood Business Association’s mission,
our vision is to adopt initiatives that make the Elmwood
area one of the best places to live, work and play in
Jefferson Parish. Through this reputation, our businesses
within the park will thrive.
We are currently working on our most recent initiative to
“put the Park back in Elmwood.” Board members have
met with GNO, Inc and Councilman Paul Johnston to
discuss the Water Management Plan for the area. A
future meeting is scheduled with engineers from the Netherlands.
Our strength is dependent upon our members and your involvement in
the Association. If you’re interested in working on our latest initiative or
joining one of our Committees, please contact us at elmwoodba.org.
Our committees are:
• Government Committee
• Communication Committee
• Membership Committee

TAX HIGHLIGHTS
By Randall C. Martin, CPA
REPORTING CAPITAL GAINS AND LOSSES
For 2013, the IRS has new reporting rules for reporting
capital gains and losses. Capital transactions are
basically the sale of capital assets, the most common are
stocks, bonds and real estate. These transactions must
be listed individually on Form 8949. There are three
exceptions to this detail reporting. The most common
exceptions are: 1. If you report each transaction on
an attached schedule in a similar format as the 8949
form, and 2. If the transactions were reported to you
on a 1099-B and the basis was reported to the IRS and
does not show a nondeductible wash sale loss, you can
report these directly on the Schedule D. This can be
very confusing, especially if you have a managed fund
with many transactions. For details go to Form 8949
Instructions at www.irs.gov.
SPOUSES OPERATING A BUSINESS
Spouses that jointly operate a business may elect to file
two Schedule Cs with their joint return. In the past,
many such businesses would file a partnership return
showing each spouse as a separate partner. As long
as each spouse materially participates in the operations
they may report income and expenses on separate
Schedule Cs based on their ownership stakes, usually
50% each. This allows each spouse to receive their own
credit for Social Security and Medicare coverage. This
option is not available for LLCs and limited partnerships.
HOMESTEAD EXEMPTIONS AND LLCs
Under Louisiana law, the homestead exemption extends
only to a natural person and certain trusts. This
means that a home that is owned by a Limited Liability
Company is not eligible for the homestead exemption.
This is important to know for estate planning. Many
individuals establish LLCs to transfer ownership to
their heirs. Be careful, this may cause you to lose
the homestead exemption and require you to pay
substantially more in property taxes.
COMMON RED FLAGS TO THE IRS
Recently the Kiplinger Tax Letter highlighted several items
that may draw close scrutiny by the IRS. Listed are a
few of those mentioned: 1. Claiming 100% business
use of a vehicle, 2. Deducting business meals, travel
and entertainment on Schedule C, 3. Deducting a hobby
loss, i.e. horse breeding, tree farms, 4. Deducting rental
losses, 5. Running a small business (especially those that
may be cash intensive), 6. Failing to report a foreign
bank account (severe penalties), and 7. Taking higher
than average deductions.
Happy Tax Season !!!

Annual Board Member Nominations
Elmwood Business Association is now accepting nominations for the
voting ballot for the annual Board Member elections which will be
held at the June meeting.
The Elmwood Business Association exists to protect, promote and
encourage the businesses located within the Elmwood Business
Park and their partners. Our Board Members are the driving force
in suggesting and implementing initiatives that uphold this mission.
An effective Board Member will have the capability, desire and
resources to carry out such initiatives. The term is for 3 years and
Board meetings are generally held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.
Time commitment includes attendance at our board meetings and
committee meetings as appropriate for the adopted initiatives
that have been assigned. We appreciate your assistance with this
nomination to ensure we have the right Board Members in place.
If you or anyone you know would like to be considered for a
position on the board, please visit our web site at
www.elmwoodba.org click on Membership and Get Involved and
go to Board Members to submit your nomination or email us at
[email protected]. Nominations must be in no later than May
31st to make it on the ballot.
If you have questions about these positions, you are welcome
to contact any of our current Board Members. We are happy to

SHAPE UP THIS SPRING
WITHOUT INJURIES
Training the smartest, not the hardest, can significantly decrease your risk of injury.
Heart rate training can be a very effective method
of increasing your speed and preventing injury
when training for a race. It gives you a specific
measure of how intense your efforts are. It also
varies your running workout to prevent getting
bored with the same run or the same route. When
starting a running program, or resuming running
after a period of time off, it is important to ramp
up your training. Your heart is a muscle, so you
need a gradual increase in training in order to get
maximum benefits.
There are many ways to measure your Maximum
Heart Rate (MHR). For the purpose of this article,
subtract your age from 220.
Aerobic Base Phase
For the first 2-4 weeks train at or below 75% of
your MHR. This is crucial if you plan on increasing
intensity and resistance later for not only your heart
but muscles and tendons. If you skip this phase and
go straight into intense training your risk of injury is
very high.
Strength Phase
From 4-8 weeks train at aerobic base phase while
doing intervals into 85% MHR by applying heavier
loads to the legs by running hills or an
inclined treadmill.
Anaerobic Phase
(Interval or race day zones)
From 6-8 weeks more intense training sessions
are introduced into the training program, along
with increased rest days to promote recovery.
It is essential to runners to modify their training
schedules to accommodate for the additional stress
placed on the body with anaerobic exercise. The
highest recommended heart rate to attain during the
anaerobic period is 92% of maximum heart rate.
Anything higher that 92% is stressful and provides
no additional fitness benefits. Be sure not to stay in
the aerobic phase for more than 30% of your total
workout time for that session, and alternate between
aerobic and anaerobic training to allow
sufficient recovery.
For more information on heart rate
training, visit www.heartzones.com

Involvement: We connect
vision with opportunity.
“We looked at five parishes as possible
locations for our business. JEDCO was
first to respond, and they also helped
with meeting space, staff involvement,
and discussions with area businesses.
They really made the difference.”
