In 1946, Nick Tacony started a business selling and servicing sewing machines from the basement of his
home. He invested his entire savings in used machines, motors and parts. He began to build a dream. In
2006, we will celebrate our 60th year anniversary.
Soon Nick Tacony became a leader among sewing machine entrepreneurs. In the 1950s, he expanded his
business by wholesaling sewing parts, accessories and other merchandise to retailers in the Midwest. Over
the next two decades, the business grew with the acquisition of two important competitors on the East Coast.
Each added to the Tacony network of distribution centers and increased the organization’s customer base.
In 1970, after completing his college degree in business administration and four years in the United
States Air Force, Ken Tacony joined his father in the business. With a solid foundation in place, Tacony
Corporation began to market and sell diversified products to customers inside and outside the sewing
industry. By offering a wide range of consumer appliance products, the company anticipated consumer
demands and responded to market trends. This market approach typified Tacony Corporation’s growth.

Integrity
When Ken joined the firm, the Company’s sales volume was approximately $3 million. Thanks to his
leadership and the contribution by all associates, Tacony Corporation today is not only the largest
American owned distributor of sewing machines, but a truly diversified consumer products company
that maintains ten offices around the world. Its total sales for 2004 were over $160 million.
Most importantly, Ken Tacony believes that if a company focuses on benefiting its employees, the employees
will take care of the customers, who in turn will bring financial success to its shareholders. This view has
led to a corporate culture that is embodied in the corporate motto... Tradition. Trust. Teamwork.
Tacony’s tradition includes sixty years of meeting commitments to its customers and its employees. The
tradition of standing behind its promises has created the trust that is essential for every successful
relationship. This trust is the foundation of the teamwork that is needed to deliver excellent products
and services to customers.
Awards
In June of 1997, Ken Tacony received the St. Louis
Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Ernst & Young founded the
Entrepreneur of the Year program to recognize outstanding
entrepreneurs whose achievements place them among
leaders in the business world.
Tacony Corporation was the recipient of the 1999 Missouri
Governor’s Small Business of the Year Award, presented at
the Governor’s Economic Development Conference. Tacony
was honored for making the decision to move its production
of vacuum cleaners to the United States and for bringing
jobs to Missouri, economic growth to the community of
St. James, and job skills to individuals, which positively
changed the face of Missouri’s economy.
Tacony Corporation received the 2002 Missouri Impact
Award from Missouri Enterprise. It recognizes companies
who have excelled in the areas of continuous improvement
in manufacturing, innovative technology development,
environmental solutions, or contributions to the success
of Missouri business and community/state economic
development.
In April 2003, Tacony Manufacturing received the 2003
Missouri Industry of the Year Award in the small company
classification. The Award, sponsored by Associated
Industries of Missouri (AIM), and the Mid-Missouri Business
Journal annually recognizes the best and brightest Missouri
businesses that have become leaders in making Missouri a
better place to live and work.

Sewing Divisions
Baby Lock has one purpose in mind: To enhance the “love of sewing”.
That’s the way Baby Lock pursues sewing innovations like Jet-Air threading
and the largest color screen available for sewers to enjoy their passion to

years of experience, sewers know they can depend on Baby Lock to stand
behind all products with industry-leading warranties. No other sewing
machine company can bring these elements together more successfully
than Baby Lock.
For over 50 years, generations of home sewers have relied on Elna’s
heritage of quality sewing machines to create beautiful and lasting works
of art. Elna and its independent retailers are committed to bringing out
the artist in each sewer! With embroidery, quilting, heirloom and today’s
home decorating projects, Elna delivers machines that can keep up with a
consumer’s imagination and creativity. Elna inspires the sewing artist (in
all of us). Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced professional, each
Elna product helps you create and enjoy the art of sewing.
Simplicity sewing machines offers a line of quality sewing products tailored
to meet the needs of beginning sewers/crafters as well as accomplished
sewing/crafting enthusiasts. Recognizing that technology has put a new

machines are sold through shopping networks on television, popular mail
order catalogs and over the internet. Simplicity machines can also be found
nationwide at mass merchant and independent retail stores. Not only are
Simplicity sewing machines convenient to purchase, but popular pricing,
excellent quality, and after the sale service are keystones of the Simplicity
product line.
The focus of the Tacony Sewing Central sales division is to have a staff of
trained “specialists” to handle over 25,000 items. Tacony Sewing Central
wholesales household and industrial parts plus a large variety of notions
and accessories for most sewing machine brands, including, Amazing
Designs which provides high quality, 3-dimensional embroidery designs
for the home sewer. Designs are available on CD, floppy disk and on
memory cards. Software products from Amazing Designs complement
embroidery designs by adding features like re-sizing designs and adjusting
stitch density, and the ability to convert design formats.

Quality
In 1997, Tacony Corporation brought production of Simplicity
and Riccar vacuum cleaners from Taiwan to the United States. As
a result, Tacony is now manufacturing two new lines of vacuum
cleaners at its U.S. facility in St. James, Missouri. Not only does
this allow Tacony to proudly put the “Manufactured in the USA”
label on its Missouri products, it enables Tacony to maintain
closer control of quality issues and to be more responsive
to dealer and consumer needs.
In addition to the new facility to support Riccar,
Simplicity and Powr-Flite, Tacony Corporation has
invested a considerable amount of resources into
Research and Development. Among the resulting
new capabilities are:
• High-tech paint facility
• ISO 900 certified
• Solid modeling design using a
state-of-the-art CAD system
• Prototyping of vacuum cleaners
and other products
• Detailed testing of all Tacony
products using ASTM standards
These new capabilities have already been utilized
in the development of the two new lines of
high-performance vacuum cleaners that are being
manufactured at the St. James faculty.
Tacony’s commitment to new product development
and existing product improvements ensures
continued success and growth of its market share.
It proves to customers that Tacony Corporation will
continue to make significant investments in and
commitments to the future of Simplicity and Riccar
lines of vacuum cleaners.
Dedicated
Throughout the years, each of the regional offices and warehouses
has been moved, expanded, or replaced with new facilities to
accommodate ever-growing customer needs. Today, “Tacony’s
Corporate Centre” is home to all administrative departments and
most sales and marketing divisions. Located in Fenton, Missouri,
this splendid 103,000 sq. ft. facility also contains a state-of-theart warehouse for Midwest distribution.
A spacious sewing lab and a company training center are used
frequently to host programs to strengthen product knowledge for
visiting Tacony customers and its own associates.
Tacony has also taken a leading position in providing greater
convenience and service for its customers. State-of-the-art
inventory methods, wire-guided material handling equipment
and computer-controlled parts carousels ensure speedy and
accurate order handling.
Unique to the industries it serves, Tacony has its own in-house
advertising and printing facilities, which provide beautiful custom
literature, brochures, ads, and posters for each product division.
Nick Tacony always believed in quality products and good
service. These basic principles are still the foundation of
the organization’s philosophy. Tacony Corporation is, and
will continue to be, a place where business can be conducted
with confidence.
