Spring 2009
Tax Credits Available in ‘09
Beginning in January of this year, homeowners may be
eligible for certain federal tax incentives and credits for
energy conservation improvements done to their homes.
The maximum tax credit a homeowner can receive is 30
percent of the cost of the improvement up to $1,500. The
credit can be earned by doing the following:
• Replace exterior windows and skylights with
qualifying Energy Star windows. Not all Energy Star
windows qualify so check with the manufacturer.
• Install insulation, including vapor barriers. New
siding does not qualify.
• All Energy Star labeled metal and asphalt roof
materials qualify for the tax credit. The roofing
material must have at least a two-year warranty and
last at least five years.
• Caulk, weather stripping and foam sealants, as
well as storm doors qualify for the credit.
• Replacing the central air conditioner, heat pump,
furnace, boiler or water heater can qualify for the
credit. For a list of qualified products, check with
the manufacturer to see if their equipment qualifies.
• Air-to-air heat pumps with energy efficiency
rating of 12 or greater earn the tax credit.
• Geo-thermal heat pumps with an energy efficiency
rating of 14.1 or better receive the credit of 30 percent
of the cost and are not subject to the $1,500 cap.
All improvements bust be installed in or on the homeowner’s
principal residence in the U.S. The improvements must be
placed in service between the dates of January 1, 2009
through December 31, 2010.

IRAs (Individual Retirement Accounts)
Every day we hear stories about social security
and employment pension programs going away.
It’s more important than ever to prepare for
retirement. The government thinks it’s so important
they’ve upped the annual contribution limit
on IRAs. New rules allow you to deposit up to
$5000 a year, and traditional IRA contributions
may be deducted from your income tax. Dakotaland
Federal Credit Union has the complete line of
IRAs and we urge you to use every opportunity
to save for your retirement. Learn more about
IRAs on our web site; www.dakotalandfcu.com.
Top 10 ways to prevent Identity Theft
Stop sharing your information with strangers –
particularly via telephone and e-mail scams,
cash machine skimming, and your trashcan.
1. Request a free credit report every 12
months from the three credit reporting companies
at www.annualcreditreport.com.
2. Remove your name from marketing lists
(call 1-888-5OPT-OUT) to reduce junk mail
containing your personal information.
4. Do not list your Social Security number or
driver’s license number on checks

7. Do not respond to unsolicited e-mail
(spam) or callers who ask for information
such as SSNs and account numbers.
8. Add reliable software to your computer.
3. Check financial statements, including
bank, credit card, and investment accounts,
every month for unusual transactions.

6. Keep personal ID documents in a secure
place at home, one that visitors can’t access.
5. Avoid using checks if possible and bank
online.
9. Keep bank cards and checks at home
unless needed.
10. When you must carry credit cards
and personal ID, keep them secure—oldfashioned pickpockets still account for 30
percent of identity thefts.

what to do if your identity gets stolen go to
