In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable about
the rich man who selfishly stored all his grain
and goods only to die and not enjoy his abundance anyway. What we struggle all our lives
to learn is that life does not consist of possessions nor
our perceived security, but of being possessed by
God. In the month of July, through your gifts, the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist
families by providing food and money for utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!

LOOKING AHEAD
Registration forms for the upcoming Winter Program (September 2016 thru April 2017) are
coming in at a steady pace for students in grades two through eight. Please return these pink forms as soon
as possible.
When registering a new student, 1st thru 8th grade, you must come into the Religion Office
on the second floor of the Parish Center, Monday through Thursday, between 11:00AM and 4:00PM.
Please be sure to bring a copy of the child’s Baptismal Certificate when you come. The fee of $175.00 per
child is due at that time.
SUMMER PROGRAM
The Summer Program 2016 officially begins today, July 31st, with the 9:30AM Family Mass.
St. Matthew’s will really be jumping with 650 of us occupying the halls for the next two weeks. Students,
helpers and teachers must wear their Summer Program 2016 shirts and sit in the rows marked off by grade at
our Sunday Masses. Everyone should be in the Church by 9:10AM so they can be seated in the proper area
and are not late for Mass. Please remember your tithing envelope each Sunday as they are not only used for
a donation but also to take attendance.
As the Summer Program enfolds, we ask that the parents and children please use the crosswalks and follow the directions of our security/traffic guards when entering and exiting the building as the
parking lot is extremely busy during those hours.
During the week, the students will be attending the 9:00AM Mass. We invite the parents and
all parishioners to join us at that Mass.
At this time, I would like to thank all the boys and girls who came in during the month of July
to help us prepare for the Summer Program. We couldn’t have done it without them.

Sister Kay
Many years ago, another Sister and I were Board Members at Good Samaritan Hospital and as such
were attending their Annual Ball and Fund Raiser. A lovely woman came up to me and said she
knew me from St. Matthew’s. Her name is Alyssa Abulencia and her husband, at that time, was a
member of the Medical Staff at Good Samaritan Hospital. Since that initial meeting, I have often seen
this devoted, loving family, including their two wonderful children at St. Matthew’s.
Sadly, a few years ago, their young son Jacob became seriously ill and was treated with chemotherapy. He bore these treatments heroically and was even undergoing treatment when he received his
Confirmation. I remember seeing him in the first pew on his Confirmation day and praying for good
health for him.
The very good news is that he did recover. Shortly after that, for the next year, he and his mother
taught Religious Education here. To me, this was more than admirable as I’m sure that Jacob and his
mother could have taken a break and done other things.
Jacob just graduated from HS. He looks great in his graduation picture which brought tears of joy to
my eyes. This summer, he is a Counselor at Sunrise Camp, a camp for children with cancer – something close to his heart. This outstanding young man has taken a very difficult situation and has
turned it in to helping others. He is certainly an inspiration to me and a very good role model for all of
us, especially for young people. In the Fall, he will begin a Pre-Med course in college. How fortunate
people will be to be recipients of his great compassion! I heartily congratulate Jacob and pray for
God’s continued blessing on him and his family.
For many years, I have been invited to offer a brief prayer at the Annual SamKids Party, where I have
met many families and their children who had been hospitalized at Good Samaritan Hospital. For
several reasons it is one of my favorite events to attend. I witness the great love that the Pediatricians
and their Staff have for these children and their families. Likewise, I also witness the great gratitude
that the families have for the wonderful medical and nursing care at the Hospital. In addition, I witness the great spirit of these children, some of whom have been cured, some who remain in wheelchairs and some who are chronically ill. I also get a chance to speak to some parents and to offer
them encouragement and prayers. It is a difficult time for them.
I am inspired by so many wonderful volunteers who donate their time and prizes to these children.
Lastly, I admire the young volunteer students from St. John the Baptist HS who give up a Saturday to
play games and to dance with these children. Let us try to reach out to the sick and to pray for them,
especially for the young children who are sick, for their Doctors and Nurses and for their families who
care for them and love them very much.

Catholics For Freedom of Religion
California Threatens Religious Freedom of Catholic Colleges:
The freedom of Catholic and other faith-based colleges in CA to operate in accord
with their religious missions is being threatened by recent legislation that advances the states LGBT lobby. The bill's primary goal is to prevent faith-based colleges that receive state funds from enforcing codes of conduct that reflect the colleges' religious beliefs about sexual identity and the confining of marriage to malefemale relationships.
If signed into law, this bill opens religious colleges to unjust litigation and makes them unable to
accept state grants used to help pay students' tuition. It would eliminate these colleges ability to
operate under any faith-based principles and represents an attack on religious freedom that promotes and protects a radical gender ideology that Pope Francis has warned is a danger to society. (christianitytoday.com, 7/5/16; cardinalnewmansociety.org, 6/13/16)
