Age of Conan: Hyborian adventures
Tom Clancy’s
End War
>> Xbox 360
The best thing since World of Warcraft? MUSCLE!
BOUND
You can play this RTS set in the
Tom Clancy universe with just the
sound of your voice! From ordering
attacks to bolstering defences and
performing flanking manoeuvres,
you shout your commands down
the headset and watch as your unit
does your bidding. Due July 11.
Soul Calibur
Legends
>> Wii
It’s Soul Calibur on the Wii! The
game recognises how you swing
your weapon, so a downward
swipe with the Remote will result
in a head-chopping slash that cuts
down and a side swipe will produce
a sneaky belly-opening slice. Slash,
hack, kill! Due August 1.
A
ge of Conan has lived up to all the hype for
a PC game. That’s because it’s an RPG with
real-time combat. Every key press is a slash
or dodge and when your hits connect, they’re
greeted with harsh clangs or flying limbs and heads.
Nice. In between times, you’ll be journeying into active
volcanoes, travelling to islands populated by man-eating creatures, exploring the dungeons
under the crumbling City of Tortage and
chatting with authentic Robert E.
Howardian characters, such as scarred
and brooding allies and the bloodthirsty
followers of snake cults.
Conan also lets you command NPCs and other
players in huge multiplayer battles for hours of fun in
what’s the prettiest online role-playing game we’ve
seen. The Collector’s Edition also includes the Ring
of Acheron, which gives you higher hit points, plus
a Drinking Cape that treats you to free drinks
in all of Hyboria’s taverns! There’s also a
leatherette map of Hyboria, a 124-page
art book and 30 days of free play.

Alone in the Dark
The Chronicles
of Narnia:
Prince Caspian
Yikes! This game is no stroll in the park…
>> DS, PC, PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360
You get to play a whole army of
characters in this slightly darker and
much improved second adventure.
Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are
called back to Narnia where 1,000
years have passed and the cruel
human Telmarines are trying to rid
the land of fantastic creatures…
S omething nasty is lurking in New York’s
Central Park in this long-awaited revival of
the classic survival-shocker series. Enter
paranormal investigator Edward Carnby who
goes looking for answers after reported sightings of
horrific creatures skulking around the park. However,
he gets a lot more than he bargained for as all of its
sinister mysteries and terrors spill out over the course
of one apocalyptic night…
The creepy story is told in TV serial-like episodes,
complete with nerve-jangling cliffhanger endings.
Body damage and a physiological meter show you
how much damage has been done to Carnby by the

nightlife of the park, and this is significant because
if Carnby has been taking a hiding, he’s going to be
bleeding and scared stiff, and some creatures use
sensory perception of all kinds to find their victims…
It’s all scary stuff and you can enjoy it to the full
even if you aren’t a hardcore gamer because if a boss
fight, puzzle or combat sequence has you completely
befuddled, a cunning new feature enables you to skip
ahead and continue on with the story.

The Race Driver series goes up a gear…
odemasters’ splendid Race Driver series
has hitherto veered towards the simulation
end of the market. With GRID, though, it
has expanded – or rather exploded – into a
fantastic, no-holds-barred arcade racer taking in truly disparate motorsports from all over the world.
At the traditional end of things you have muscle
car racing in Detroit, open-wheel Formula 1000 racing
and, of course, the bumping and grinding touring car
clashes that stay true to the series’ roots. GRID builds
on this by also throwing into the mix exotic events like
Pro Touge (furious one-on-one tear-ups round tight
and slippery Japanese mountain roads), Drift Battles
and Demolition Derbies. As a result, the single-player
mode is tremendously varied and long-lasting.
Meanwhile, in a really nice touch, GRID’s clever
new Flashback feature lets you rewind time a bit
following a crash or a particularly poor sector. Clever,
eh? The online multiplayer mode supports 12 players
with full damage modelling, while the tracks and cars
are well chosen and look great, making this an early
contender for the title of racing game of the year.

Very much a next-gen version of
its predecessors, Midnight Club:
LA gives you a white-knuckle ride

P
C gamers have been playing this brilliant

to join in the carnage too. Set in 2065, you
and your eight-man team play as the troops of

The run-and-gun levels are huge, the
weapons are chunky, the health bars are small
and when you’re toasted you just respawn and
charge back into the fray – perhaps this time
on one of the various flying, hopping and rolling
vehicles. Of course, this isn’t just a bunch

defend a base, the humans take out a wall, set up a
shield, destroy a gate and hack into the mainframe. It
takes more than brute force to complete these tasks
too – you need to make full use of Quake Wars’
distinct character classes. An engineer,
for example, can slap down cannons,
while a tactician can summon airstrikes.
If you aren’t a PC gamer, you won’t have

he classy golf sim is back with some great
tweaks to its swing. Thanks to a new graphics
engine, the courses look so good you can
practically smell the grass. Five new courses
have also been added, including the Gary Player

ensuring plenty of varied gameplay to enjoy.
Helping you to improve your game, the Swing
icon now replicates your swing movement exactly so
you instantly have a visual understanding of why you

lets you tweak the settings of each wedge, iron, wood

upping the power.

T he Battlefield games haven’t changed all
that much since 1942, but now developer
DICE has given the series a shake-up with
Battlefield: Bad Company. First off, this game
adds a meaty, squad-based, single-player mode to
complement its famous multiplayer action.
Its Kelly’s Heroes and Three Kings-influenced
story follows a renegade squad of soldiers who
are left behind enemy lines in the fictional Eastern
European country of Serkozache. They have only one
mission in mind: revenge! Of course, while they’re
at it, they’re going to try to grab themselves some
stashes of gold too…

completely destructible environments, this time round

don’t have to feel lonesome either, as Bad Company
offers plenty of the multiplayer games that have made
the series such a hit, including Gold Rush, where the
aim is to grab or defend stashes of loot. There’s gold – and loud explosions – in them thar hills!

reat visuals, wonderful levels, four-player
multiplayer action (including online) and
even a fully-fledged adventure mode go into
this game’s boiling pot. It’s the extraordinary
roster of fighters that really makes this Super Smash
Bros. Brawl special, though. All of Nintendo’s best are
in it – Meta Knight from the Kirby games, Pit from Kid
Icarus, Zero Suit Samus (Samus without her armour)
from Metroid, Link, Pikachu, Mario, Wario and, yes,
Solid Snake from Metal Gear…
In fact, almost anything from the world of
Nintendo can pop in this game, whether it’s a tune, an
obscure item or a character who shows up to help a
fighter. Eminently customisable, you can choose the
frequency of items appearing, adjust musical scores
and basically play the game however you like.
Items range from baseball bats and proximity
mines to Poké Balls and Assist Trophies that summon
characters such as the Hammer Bros. and Sim City’s
Dr. Wright to attack your opponents. It’s all marvellous,
chaotic fun – and who hasn’t wanted to whack
Pikachu over the head with a baseball bat at times?

Lego: Indiana Jones
It’s time for Indy to teach those nasty LEGO Nazis a lesson…
T
here’s only one thing for it if you can’t get
Indiana Jones out of your head after The
Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull – the LEGO
game of Indy’s first three adventures! Like
the LEGO Star Wars series before it, LEGO Indy
combines platform action with a sense of humour
that lampoons the films. And yes, you do have to
dodge a giant boulder made out of plastic bricks…
You’ve got your famous bullwhip on hand to
help you and Indy is able to use it to swing across
gaps, smash crates, pull switches and keep those
evil LEGO Nazis at bay.
Other tools come in handy too, such as a
shovel for digging up treasure, a wrench for fixing
broken LEGO machines and guns that make the
baddies explode in a shower of… bricks.
The levels are stuffed with cunning traps and
puzzles that can sometimes be beaten best in
co-op mode, so get a friend to jump in and
play the adventure with you!

buildings, streets, cars and anything else you can
get your giant green paws on.
Great physics effects makes all the mindless

entire planet of Earth single-handed. WALL•E can
get through his peril-filled levels by creating junk
cubes that he can throw to clear paths and trigger
events. Meanwhile, EVE’s levels are based on
shooting and jet-racing. On their shared levels,
she can pick WALL•E up for some super-jumps.
Four-player multiplayer action includes Stop
the Clocks, a co-op game where you must team
up and race around each level to find and disarm
timers. EVE Aerial Arena and Robot Tag provide
chute-’em-up excitement, while in Keep the Cube,
you must keep control of a cube for longer than
anyone else. Can you trash the opposition?

ROCK OUT!
Rock Band
A
re you ready to rock? Again? With
more peripherals? Of course you are!
Harmonix’s long-awaited music game
raises the bar against the Guitar
Hero series by giving you and up to three
musically-minded friends the chance to play
as a complete band with lead and bass guitar,
vocals, drums… the lot!
If you’ve played Guitar Hero then you’ll
have a head start. Guitarists and bass players
(the Fender Stratocaster controller doubles as
both a lead and a bass guitar) hold the relevant
coloured keys and strum along to a timeline.
Vocalists have a karaoke-style bar to sing
along to, while drummers – who have the most
difficult job of the lot! – have to hit the relevant
pad in time with the music. These superb bits
of kit really bring the game to life and make
you feel like you’re actually in a band.
Sound slightly scary? It isn’t! Four levels of
difficulty that can be set to suit each individual
playing make Rock Band a genuine party
game. Whatever their level, everyone can have
a brilliant time strutting their stuff, just like a
real rock star on the stage.
Lots of customisation features
add to the fun. After you’ve
chosen what sort of band you

elcome to the year 2014. Private
military companies that fight
economic wars with supersoldiers now dominate the
world and Solid’s twisted twin brother and nemesis, Liquid, has gained
control of the five of the largest. He’s now amassing a huge army in the
Middle East. Uh oh! It’s time a disillusioned, ageing and terminally ill
Snake took out his brother once and for all…
Exciting, eh? And when you’ve got over the eye-popping graphics
you’ll realise that MGS4 has an almost embarrassingly rich array of slick
moves and features that other stealth games can only dream about.
How you play it is up to you. If you fancy the gung-ho, ‘kill everyone
single-handed’ route, go for it. Snake is a veritable one-man army who’s
simply bristling with weapons. On the other hand, the more tactical and
stealthy among you will be interested in the MK-2 Pistol’s ‘Anesth’ bullets
that anaesthetise enemies. Alternatively, goons can now be pulled to the
ground and throttled until they pass out. A new choke-hold indicator even
gives you the option of killing your victim with a single button press… Snake can also change the colour of his suit to blend in with his
surroundings or with different units on the battlefield. Allying yourself with a faction can earn you items and get you into their private bases.
Of course, not all of the new super-realistic features work in your
favour. For instance, if you hide in rubbish bins, your ripe smell can give
you away to the enemy, while if you roll around in oil drums you’re likely
to get nauseous. Nice!
This really is bags of fun and by far the best adventure of the series.
The only thing we’re unhappy about is the fact that it’s the last one!

What’s within
G
amers searching for a brutal but seriously beautiful
beat-’em-up can stop looking now. Offering online
punch-ups for the first time and guest starring
Darth Vader and Yoda (see box), Soul Calibur IV will
keep you and your friends fighting until your arms fall off.
A real step up from SCIII, the most obvious improvement
lies in the visuals. The stages look great (Darth Vader
has a stunning Star Destroyer landing bay to throw
his weight about in) and the characters really are
something else. Old hands like Mitsurugi now
feature little imperfections such as scars
that only next-gen magic allows.
The classic roster of fighters will be
familiar to any fan of the series. Aside from
Mitsurugi, favourites such as Cassandra, Maxi, Siegfried,
Sophitia, Taki, Tira and Voldo all return with tweaked moves.
Newcomers include Hildegard von Krome, who can string
together awesome combos using her spear and short sword.
The exciting fighting system is set up to stop you from
playing too defensively. To the side of the life meter is a
gem-like icon called the Soul Gauge. As you hit more combos,
blocked or not, it builds up and gets you closer to new instant-kill
Critical Finish moves that end a contest if they connect. If you block too
much you just add to your opponent’s Soul Gauge.
Habitual blockers also suffer the indignity of their amour being
gradually smashed off, which also makes them much more vulnerable
to Critical Finishes. In other words, this is a fighter that actually rewards
fighting. The only question is, are you hard enough?
your soul?
er!

The Force is strong
with this one!
} Soul Calibur IV features the two most
eagerly anticipated characters in the series’
history: Darth Vader stalks the PS3 version
and Yoda floats about on the Xbox 360. Vader
is huge and tough to master as he’s slow.
However, he can use rapid Force punches
and body blows. He’s also armed with his
classic red lightsaber and has a great Force
Choke. Yoda, on the other hand, is tiny,
speedy and has plenty of flips, lightsaber
attacks and Force powers to call upon.

>What’s your
favourite game
of all time?
Mike: Gears of War
on the Xbox 360.
Jenny: Legend of
Zelda: Phantom
Hourglass on the DS.
>What do you
like about them
so much?
Mike: It has great gameplay and brilliant graphics.
Jenny: The story is very good, as is the gameplay,
while the way in which you have to use the DS to
play it is great fun.
>What are your top five games ever?
Mike:
1. Return To Castle Wolfenstein (Xbox). A great shooter.
2. Cannon Fodder (GameBoy Color). Good fun.
3. Ratchet & Clank (PS3). Fantastic characters.
4. BioShock (Xbox 360). Really atmospheric.
5. Gears of War (Xbox 360). Brilliant gameplay.
Jenny:
1. Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS). Good use of the DS.
2. Mario Kart (Wii). It’s really good fun to play using the
Wii wheel!
3. Super Mario Bros (DS). A good game to play when
you’ve got a spare 10 minutes.
4. Daxter (PSP). It works well on the machine and the
character is fun too.
5. Buzz! The Music Quiz (PS2). I play it a lot when we
have parties and I always manage to win!
>What games are you most looking
forward to this year?
Mike: Killzone 2 on PS3.
Jenny: LEGO Indiana Jones – the films are great and the
LEGO games have been funny before so this should be a
really good game.
>How long have you worked with CHIPS?
Mike: Five and a half years.
>Why did you want to work with CHIPS?
Mike: It gave us chance to work as a family business
in an industry that’s always changing.
>Who else works at the Arnold store?
Mike: My wife and Jenny’s mum, Anne.
>What’s the most popular game in-store
at the moment?
Mike: Grand Theft Auto IV.
>What’s the strangest request you’ve
had during your time working with CHIPS?
Mike: Apart from a couple of people ringing up to
make sure we weren’t a fish and chip shop, we
had a lady who came in and mistakenly asked for
games that her grandson could play on his playboy,
instead of his GameBoy!

wii fit day
WII FIT DAY
Forget the gym – the Wii has all you need to get fit and flexible!
T
hanks to CHIPS and the Nintendo team,
some lucky fitness fans enjoyed a brilliant
workout at the University of Teesside.
People flocked to the ‘Get A Better Life’
event, held at the university on June 8, where they
jumped at the chance of trying out Wii Fit.
The Nintendo team, led by Joanne Woodward,
Nintendo’s Regional Brand Ambassador, was on
hand with three Wii Fit set-ups to demonstrate just
how versatile the game is and to judge the Wii Fit
competition, sponsored by CHIPS.
CHIPS Joint Managing Director Nik Agar, who
was on hand throughout the event, said, “We all
had a great day and were delighted to be invited to
take part in the event, sponsored by the university,
Evening Gazette and Middlesbrough NHS Trust.
“The aim of the day was to show people how
they could become more fit through a range of
activities. When Nintendo heard about it, they
pledged their support too and everyone had a
great time watching Jo and her team demonstrate
the game and then trying it out themselves.”
Sean Crooks, 25, of Linthorpe, beat all comers
in the Ski-Jump contest with a combined score of
340 metres after two excellent leaps. Perhaps we
have a new Eddie the Eagle in the making!

➔ SouthPeak Interactive’s Pool Party has you
wielding a ‘Wonder Stick’ cue that attaches
to the Wii Remote as you attempt to hustle
pros in 10 different venues, ranging from the
seediest dive bars to opulent mansions and
luxurious yachts. The game features 13 different
single-player and multiplayer game types,
encompassing your standard 8-ball and 9-ball,
plus snooker and classic pool party games such
as Killer (three misses and you’re out). Once
you’ve got a feel for the controls and views,
playing the game is great fun thanks to some
accurate yet quite unforgiving ball physics. Even
advanced techniques such as putting a bit of
side (or ‘English’, as the Americans call it) on
the cue ball are translated really well. ■

➔ The original wall-breaking game, 1978’s
Breakout involved controlling a bat at the bottom
of the screen to direct a ball at rows of bricks
arranged at the top. Japanese developer Taito
revived it in 1987 with the coin-op classic
Arkanoid, which redefined the bat as a spaceship
and the ball as an energy bolt. The original
Arkanoid had a paddle but on this version, British
gamers can only move the bat with the D-pad or
by using the stylus. However, that doesn’t make
it any less fun or addictive! With all the funky
graphics and sound effects of the original, this is
still a fabulous retro classic that you just won’t
be able to stop playing. ■

➔ Simple often means beautiful and that’s
certainly true of the puzzle game Echochrome.
A lot trickier than first appearances suggest,
you have to guide a tiny mannequin figure
through a series of 3D objects that are made
up of corridors. By tilting and turning each
object to alter the perspective, you gradually
open pathways so your character can escape
that design. In each puzzle, the mannequin is
helped by echoes or shadow guides. These act
as progress points to help you advance through
each maze and you’re scored on how quickly
you can solve each one. It’s a PSP classic! ■

the perfect time to pick
up the budget version of
the original game that
has you and your fellow
gang members trying to
take control of a whole
city. The gameplay and
mission structure are
very like Grand Theft
Auto but the ante is very
much upped in terms
of over-the-top action.
Graphically too it’s a
step up from GTA: San
Andreas – for instance, in Saints Row you can
see for miles in all directions and the streets
are full of vehicles and people.
You can also do an enormous amount
of damage to vehicles and buildings as you
play, making the game incredibly realistic –
it even remembers individual bullet holes in
your prized car! This leads us nicely on to
customisation. Unlike GTA, in Saints Row you
can bling up not only your motor but your
character too. Just how lean and mean you
want to be is up to you!
and glossy graphics. These aliens have shields
you must blast through before you can dispatch
them. Luckily, taking out four like-coloured
invaders makes specific power-ups fall: red
enemies release bombs, whites provide shields
and so on. It’s a simple concept and one that
means you have to think about which powerups you need and how to get them. Suddenly
playing Space Invaders requires a brain! ■

Saints Row also beat GTA
to it with regard to multiplayer
thrills. Online you can play
co-op style or get involved
in bonkers games such Big
Ass Chain, where you have
to collect neck chains (by
capping rivals, naturally) for
points. In Protect the Pimp,
one team has a pimp and
must prevent him from
getting taken out by the
other team. Good, eh?
family-friendly, open-world driving game, to the
rescue! Developed by the creators of Driver, the
story focuses on a group called the Emergency
Heroes, an elite task force that’s charged with
keeping the city of San Alto a commercial and
residential paradise.
As Zach Harper, a cadet with a talent for
driving, you’ll be getting behind the wheel of
16 high-tech vehicles and racing through the
streets to reach emergency situations. You
can drive for all the emergency services – fire,
police and ambulance – and each one offers
different challenges. The ambulance driving,
for example, is all about making crazy jumps to
reach hard-to-get-to locations, while the cops
do lots of chasing and smashing.
With arrows always pointing you in the
right direction, it’s a bit like Crazy Taxi with the
emergency services! In two-player mode, you
can challenge your friends or combine forces to
form the ultimate rescue hero team. ■

Customers at CHIPS Chorlton can be forgiven
for thinking they’ve stepped back in time
when they walk into the store because
retro games fanatic Faisal Ali, who runs
the Barlow Moor Road shop, has installed a
vintage arcade cabinet!
The cabinet has pride of place in the centre
of his store and helps to raise awarenes s of
retro 2D games. Of course, regulars have had
great fun playing on it too!

Dear CHIPS
I used to buy a lot of vintage games from the various
high-street gaming stores, but it seems that even
they are becoming streamlined and quite samey in
the titles they stock. So I was really happy when I
found your shop at the end of my high street and was
able to buy not only vintage SNES games but also
GameBoy Advance and Gamecube titles – and better
yet, they were 3 for 2! Thanks for letting me feed my
vintage game habit once again!
Christina Martin, Orpington
Thanks for your letter, Christina. We think
CHIPS stores offer a fantastic range of
games that’s second to none, whether you
want the latest next-gen blockbuster smash
or a classic retro title. And while we pride
ourselves on our huge stock, we’ve even
prouder of our staff – you won’t find a more
friendly and knowledgeable group of gamers
anywhere, so whether you want help tracking
down an obscure title, need some top tips or
fancy challenging them to an online game,
have a chat – they’ll be happy to help!
As the writer of our Star Letter this month,
you win a jam-packed CHIPS goodie bag.
Congratulations, Christina!
