EXTREMIST THREAT INCLUDES
GROUPS FROM THE PHILIPPINES
Aussie Spy
warns of
Threat
SYDNEY — Australia’s top spy warned of the “very real
threat” from extremists in the first public address by the head of
the country’s Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) in its 60-year
history.
Nick Warner said the security challenges for agents had
dramatically changed over the past decade, as he provided a rare
glimpse into the agency’s work in a speech designed to raise
public awareness about the intelligence community.
Warner said there was now “a web of links between extremists
from Australia to Indonesia, to the southern Philippines, to the
FATA region (tribal districts) in Pakistan, and to Al-Qaeda in
the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen, and on to Somalia.”
“We know that the intention to conduct mass casualty attacks
against Western countries, including Australia, remains very real,”
he said, speaking at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.
“We also know that many of these planned attacks are being
conceived in places remote from Australia.”
Warner said ASIS, working with foreign partners, has been
closely involved with the arrest and detention of dozens of
terrorists in Southeast Asia over the past decade – including in
recent months.
In February, 15 members of the Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah
Islamiyah – both known as al-Qaeda affiliates – were killed
in an air strike by the Philippine military in Sulu. Thirty of
the extremists who survived were then pursued by Philippine
soldiers.
In a Reuters report, US Deputy Ambassador to the
Philippines Leslie Basset said the deaths “[mark] a very serious

BENDING OVER BACKWARDS FOR CHINA
Aquino de-escalating Dispute
MANILA, Philippines – President Aquino has
rejected claims that he has been belligerent towards
China, saying that his administration has been
bending over backwards to de-escalate the territorial
dispute with Beijing.
In an exclusive interview with ANC’s Coco
Alcuaz, Aquino said that from Day 1 of the conflict
at Scarborough Shoal, his government has been
taking steps to ensure that tensions with China do
not escalate.
“When this whole incident happened, we had
a Navy ship [there]. As soon as a civilian ship was
ready to sail, it replaced the Navy ship. From day 1
practically, or 3 days to be technical about it, when
the Coast Guard ship was ready, we wanted to de-

escalate,” he said.
Tensions between China and the Philippines
started last April after the Philippine warship BRP
Gregorio del Pilar was involved in a standoff with
2 Chinese surveillance vessels at the Scarborough
Shoal, an area claimed by both nations. The
surveillance boats prevented Philippine authorities
from arresting Chinese fishermen who were fishing
in the area.
The Philippines has filed several diplomatic protests
with Beijing over the Chinese ships’ intrusions into
contested waters.

Gerald wishes Sarah luck in finding what
she is looking for.
Nag-trending worldwide sa social
networking site na Twitter ang episode ng
Sarah G. Live nitong Linggo dahil special
co-host ni Sarah Geronimo ang nali-link sa
kanyang si Gerald Anderson. Ang nasabing
episode ay bahagi pa rin ng month-long
birthday celebration ng Pop Star Princess.
Nagkaroon ng dance number ang dalawa
sa opening number kung saan napuno ng
hiyawan ang studio mula sa mga nonood
dahil sa sobrang kilig. Nagkaroon din
ng interview with Sarah and Gerald sa
second to the last gap ng show kung saan
ininterview ng regular co-host ng show na
si Luis Manzano ang sikat na love team.
Dito ay nagkaroon ng kulitan ang dalawa
at binalikan ang mahahalagang moments
kung paano nagsimula ang kanilang
pagkakaibigan.
Sa last portion ng show, kung saan
kumanta rin ng kanyang closing song si
Sarah, ultimate kilig ang lahat sa mensahe
ni Gerald kay Sarah, gayundin ang mga
romantic gestures niya, gaya ng mga
birthday gifts, birthday messages at ang
constant holding hands nila.
Mala-pelikula rin ang naging palitan nila

ng mensahe sa last part ng episode.
Nagbigay kasi ng birthday message si
Gerald at iniabot din niya kay Sarah
ang kanyang birthday gifts. “Happy
birthday! Wish ko talaga sa ‘yo sana
mahanap mo ‘yung mga sagot sa mga
tanong mo at mahanap ‘yung happiness
na matagal mong hinahanap,” bungad
ni Gerald sa mensahe niya kay Gerald.
Sinagot naman ito ni Sarah ng ,
“Thank you sa joy, sa kilig sa inspiration
na naibahagi mo sa akin, sa aming
lahat. Wish ko ang friendship natin
mag-last forever. Andito ako sa ‘yo
para suportahan at maging mabuting
kaibigan para sa ‘yo.”
Unang ibinigay ni Gerald ang flowers
kay Sarah at sinundan ito ng isang
kahon.
may gusto kang gawin, may gusto kang
sabihin, sabihin mo na, gawin mo na.
Sinasabi ko lang kasi time lost may never be
found again. Time will decide what’s best for
us.”

Manila, Philippines – GMA
‘Kapuso’ Network and TV5
‘Kapatid’ Network is now reportedly
in talks of merging, which was said
to be formally announced by
the end of November this year;
allegedly announced by TV big
boss Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP).
According to columnist Ricky
Lo on his Funfare post at PhilStar.
com on Monday, June 4, 2012
at around 12 a.m. (local time)
titled “MVP confirms TV5, GMA
merger“, MVP “virtually confirmed”
the GMA7-TV5 merging during the
press conference last Saturday in
San Francisco.
As noted in the report, a
partnership between TV5 and
Dish Network called “Dish Ko ‘To”
was formally signed, promoting
the combined channels of GMA
Pinoy TV and Kapatid TV5; with Mr.
Pangilinan being present during
the Sanfo launch of TV5 in Northern
California.
Apparently, a full report by
PhilStar‘s California correspondent
Raymond de Asis Lo on the press
conference of the Sanfo launch is
being expected to be released
tomorrow, Tuesday, June 5; as the
rumors of GMA7 and TV5 merger
has been circulating for years now.
Nevertheless, TV5 talent Arnell
Ignacio tweeted a message
about three hours later, which
he said came from MVP himself,
denying the report, while DJ Sta.
Ana later tweeted a message
from TV5 President and CEO Atty.
Ray Espinosa, also confirming that
GMA7-TV5 merging is not true.
Businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan
said his group was willing to buy
local broadcasting giant GMA
Network Inc. (GMA 7) at a price
higher than how much the stock
market was currently valuing the
company.
If history is to be the judge of
any mergers or takeovers anywhere
in the world, with so many denials
floating left and right, there is a
belief that this is a done deal and
when the announcement arrives, we
should not be surprised.

John believes that when it comes to

his sister, Camille Prats.
“Minsan bibili ng rubber shoes ‘yung
asawa niya pero iisipin niya kung
kailangan ba talaga niya o gusto lang

John shared.
Changing subjects a bit, John said that
while he prefers “yung babaeng single”
and “yung talagang walang anak,” he
said that it’s still possible for him to fall for
a woman who already has a child.
“Medyo na-realize ko na puwede
naman, puwede naman pala na ma-in

Pagdating sa babaeng mamahalin mo

Hindi naman mahirap pakisamahan ang
bata so I’m open about it.”

It’s not Easy being a
George Clooney Look-alike.
You get Mistaken for Being Gay.
Not that there’s Anything Wrong with It.
I do a George Clooney and say I
don’t give a shit.
The Company You Keep
Apparently, you are judged by the
company you keep. If you are with
a guy most of the time, you two are
partners, therefore, gay. If you are
with a woman always, like George
Clooney, you are just using that as
a cover and therefore, gay. If you
dump a hot woman like Jennifer
Aniston, you are gay. So Brad Pitt
is gay. But he went with Angelina
Jolie. Isn’t she bisexual?
No Company to keep
What if you do not have a company
- man or woman - to keep like me
and Romy Marquez? Well, this
is the reason we both must have a
camera in our hands all the time.
With no man or woman to keep us
company, you’ll never know where
those hands will lead to. Hmmm....
you dirty minds. I mean, it might
lead to cigarettes, which will lead to
a lighter, which will lead to smoking,
which is unhealthy, and might lead
to cancer. Kayo ha! What were you
thinking?
Accused of being gay by a Balita stringer, I became head of security for
the beauties of PCCF. I assured the parents that their daughters are safe
with me - ALONE. In this photo, I pose with Miss Philippines Canada
2012 runner-up Christal Bautista and titlist Alev Usta. Now, readers, don’t
I look like George Clooney? :D :D :D
Sue Here, Sue there
Apparently, there is alot of suing going
on. Balita is suing Manila Media Monitor
for libel. When Rosemer threatened to
sue, Columnist Tenny Soriano of Balita
asked if Rosemer was just being onionskinned. Ano naman kaya ang reason dito
para idemanda ng Balita and Monitor?
Onion-skin din kaya? Abangan ang
susunod na kabanata.
I am Gay?
Apparently, Balita stringer Romy
Marquez has insinuated that I
am gay. He also points out that I
always
photograph
raunchy pictures in
this newspaper and
warns parents of their
daughters about me
taking the photos. I
have no idea what
raunchy pictures he was talking
about until I figured out that he
was referring to the bikini shots of
Philippine actresses. Sus Ginoo.
Oh, I cannot talk like that also dahil
apparently, saying “ehe, susmaryosep,
and others” is gay-talk. He also warns
parents with daughters about me. If I
am gay, why will parents of daughters
have to worry about me? Since I am
gay, parents, your daughters are safe
with me - ALONE. What do you
think, readers? For the record, I am
not. But according to the Seinfeld
TV show, not that there’s anything
wrong with it.
Admit or Not
If you complain that you are not gay,
you get cornered from all sides by
some asking if you are insulted. If
not, why complain, they will say. If
yes, then, you get into deeper hole
why you find being gay insulting. I’ll
just admit I’m gay kaya. Or should

children, the two of whom are Edgar

Dubbed “the great profile” by Joe
Quirino (in imitation of John Barrymore’s
monicker), “Pol” Salcedo was the
first of the kayumanggi superstars, the
antithesis of the local audiences’ mad
deification of the meztizo, the anticolonial against the smothering hold
of the West. But more than just good
looks, he was also radical with his
characterizations, preferring to portray
the politicized and the social outcast,
the underdog and enraged sheep
while his meztizo confreres chose the
dusted tuxedos and the rank perfumes
of the music halls.
He was one of our most talented,
handsomest actors, and he was
someone who looked and act like a
true, honest-to-goodness gentleman:
always well-dressed, good-mannered,
confident, stylish, charming, gregarious,
and a very witty conversationalist. A
true image of a debonair that I didn’t
seem to see anymore in the younger
actors of those days.

I am gay, there will at least be one
woman who will fantasize about
me. I can only hope.

Is Chinese fishing fleet in Phl Territory?
Philippines will not go after ships in International waters
MANILA, Philippines - The fishing fleet
of 30 ships sent by China to the Spratlys
is outside Philippine territory in the West
Philippine Sea (South China Sea), the top
military commander in Western Philippines said.
Lt. Gen. Juancho Sabban, commanding
general of the military’s Western Command (Wescom), said the Chinese fishing
vessels were in the vicinity of the Chinesecontrolled Kagitingan Reef ( Johnson South
Reef ).
“They are not within our EEZ (Exclusive
Economic Zone). They’re far off,” Sabban
said. “They’re closer to Vietnam,” he added.
Raul Hernandez, spokesperson of the
Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA),
said the Philippines had sovereignty over
Kagitingan Reef.
“We have sovereignty and jurisdiction
over that area because it’s part of the Kalayaan Group of Islands,” Hernandez said.
The DFA, however, seemed not to know
where the Chinese fishing fleet exactly was.
Hernandez said the DFA was still
waiting for reports from other government agencies on the exact location of the
Chinese fishing vessels.
Under the United Nations Convention
on the Law of the Sea, the Philippines
has an Exclusive Economic Zone of 370
kilometers from its shores.
Sabban said Kagitingan Reef was more
than 555 km (300 nautical miles) from
Puerto Princesa City in Palawan province,
AUGUST 2012
Spratlys, where it ran aground on July 11.
The frigate limped back to China on the
same day, and the Philippines said it would
not file a diplomatic protest over what
could have been an unintended entry into
Philippine territory.
Sabban said it was hard to prove that the
Chinese warship was intruding in Philippine territory because the area around
Hasa-Hasa Shoal was considered an international sea lane.
“Had they stayed put there and barred
other vessels (from the area), then that’s a
different story since that is our territory,”
Sabban said.
FISHING IN TROUBLED WATERS In this photo released by China’s Xinhua news agency, a Chinese fishery administration ship (background) guards a Chinese fishing vessel near Yongshu
Reef in the Spratly Islands, in the West Philippine Sea, last Sunday. A fleet of 30 fishing vessels
arrived at the reef where China has an ocean observatory and will spend 10 days of fishing,
according to Xinhua. AP / XINHUA
and about 185 km (100 nautical miles)
southwest of Philippine-occupied Pag-asa
Island.
China last week sent its biggest fishing
expedition in recent years to the disputed
Spratly islands to assert its economic
dominance of the entire West Philippine
Sea, parts of which are claimed by the
Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and
Taiwan.
No crossing
The Philippines, locked in a territorial
dispute with China over Panatag Shoal
(Scarborough Shoal) north of the Spratlys,
has told China not to send its fishing fleet
beyond the Philippine border.
Sabban said Chinese fishing boats that
would cross into Philippine waters would
be apprehended.
“But if they are at that distance, they are
no longer our concern,” he said. “They are
not within our jurisdiction.”
The Chinese fishing fleet arrived on
Sunday just as a Chinese rescue mission
was extricating a People’s Liberation Army
missile frigate from Hasa-Hasa Shoal (Half
Moon Shoal), in the Philippine part of the

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Fisheries and

said Filipino fishermen should fish near the

the fishing ban there had expired.
The BFAR said its advice was for the
fishermen’s safety and had nothing to do
with the territorial dispute between China

Road Hog Cop has Connections
+ Crime spikes with Population Rise
MANILA,
Philippines—
The
lawman who hogged a portion of
Commonwealth Avenue and blocked
the presidential convoy, it turns out, had
well-placed connections.
PO2 Ricardo Pascua who was
relieved for refusing to give way
to the presidential convoy along
Commonwealth Avenue on Tuesday
was already dismissed for a string of
misconduct cases according to Interior
Secretary Jesse Robredo.
He added that Pascua was able
to go back into police service with
papers coming from the Office of the
Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr.
He added that Pascua was fired on
a case where the police officer was
complained over drinking with his
buddies with his gun tucked on his
waist and other instances of misconduct
but was able to go back into service.
“Siya po ay dapat maging huwaran ng
batas pero naging huwaran ng paglabag
ng batas [He ought to be a model of
the law but has turned into a model
for breaking the law],” Robredo said.
The Interior secretary said he will order
a thorough probe on how Pascua was
able to get back his position.
Meanwhile, Pascua aside from
administrative charges on blocking the
presidential convoy was also discovered
to be driving without license. He is now
facing another case before the Quezon
City Prosecutor’s Office for violation of
Section 19 of
Republic Act 4136 or the Land
Transportation And Traffic Code Act
for driving without license.
Pascua, who was driving a Mitsubishi Adventure (ZJK-679), didn’t
have his driver’s license when the
incident happened.
On Tuesday morning, Pascua was
accosted by the Presidential Secu-rity
Group for not yielding to President
Benigno Aquino 3rd’s convoy along
Commonwealth Avenue.
He was taken to the Batasan Hills
police station after he claimed that he
was a policeman.
He was relieved of his post as a result
of the incident.
Charges against him were filed on
Wednesday afternoon, the same time
when he was brought to the QC Hall
of Justice for an inquest proceeding.
Chief of the QC Prosecutors Office
Inquest Division Rogelio Velasco,
on the other hand, said that Pascua
underwent inquest proceedings before
fiscal Vivienne Manahan.
Velasco said that the case is now
under review by the city prosecutor’s
office.
Once he is found liable for the
offense, he said Pascua will only have to
pay P2,000 to bail out.
Pascua faces charges of grave
misconduct that could lead to
suspension, demotion or dismissal from
the service.
Metro population rises; crime
spurges
THE Philippine National Police
(PNP) leadership partly blames the
increasing population in Metro Manila
for the huge spike in the reported
criminal incidents in the metropolis.
PNP chief, Director General Nicanor
Bartolome said this following reports
of a 36 percent increase in the reported
criminal incidents in Metro Manila
during the first six months of 2012.
“Population is one (factor) . . . if
there’s an increase or whenever there’s
population rise it follows that there
are more crimes,” Bartolome said.
The PNP chief also said that not only
people, but also other criminal groups
or elements are migrating to Metro
Manila spawning a spike in crimes in
the metropolis.
“People are coming here in Metro
Manila plus the fact [that] even groups
from other regions are coming here and
based on records they [crime groups]
come here to perpetuate their crimes,”
Bartolome said.
The PNP chief also acknowledges
that there’s indeed a huge spike in
criminal incidents in the Metro Manila,
but overall he said that the crime
situation in whole country are not
increasing.
“In Metro Manila, yes, but in the
entire country . . . if we get the total
crime volume, there’s a decrease. The
correct picture is that in the Philippines,
peace and order situation is much
better than that of the previous year,”
Bartolome said.
The PNP chief added that the
National Capital Regional Police
Office (Ncrpo) under Director Allan
Purisima, would have to double their
effort in crime prevention in the
metropolis.
“In the crime prevention, which I
think is very important before even the
commission of a crime, the community
and other stake holders should join
together to prevent this… they have a
stake on crime prevention,” Bartolome
said.
Figures released by the NCRPO last
Tuesday showed a huge jump in crime
volume in Metro Manila from January
to end of June this year.

Actress-TV host Carmina Villaroel is delighted
with the countless positive feedback of TV
viewers about her unique ‘love team’ with
Kapamilya child wonder Zaijan Jaranilla in their
top-rating Primetime Bida teleserye on ABSCBN, “Lorenzo’s Time.”
“Our story itself is very endearing. I
personally find it cute because it’s something new.
It’s not a typical love team where in the actors are
of the same age,” said Carmina who is a selfconfessed fan of her leading man’ Zaijan.
“Zaijan is trully a brilliant child star. You
cannot come to the set unprepared and say
‘he’s just a kid’ because Zaijan will leave you
unnoticed and rule the scene,” said Carmina.
“And the kid is very charming. He’s so great.
Actually, I’m Zaijan’s fan since his Santino days
in ‘May Bukas Pa.”
Aside from her ‘love team’ with Zaijan,
Carmina takes pride with the fact that “Lorenzo’s
Time” gives the viewers a different kind of
entertainment every night. “Compared with other
primetime teleseryes, our show has a lighter story
that captures the child in every viewer’s heart. It’s
not just drama because it also has a unique touch
of comedy and it’s great for the whole family
because Enzo’s life is full of values,” Carmina

How will History judge him?
The Redemption of
Manong Johhny
INQUIRER PHOTO/LYN RILLON
TEN days after Renato Corona earned his place in
Philippine history as the first Chief Justice to be removed
from office, Rex Robles was still gushing over the luminous
performance of the presiding officer at the impeachment
trial, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.
“Did you see that, how he handled [Corona’s] walkout?”
Robles fires off. “JPE was imperious, in control. The man
taught us a lesson on [how] impeachment [should be
done]. He showed us the pedestrian manner in which the
Joseph Estrada impeachment trial was handled.”
A retired commodore in the Philippine Navy and a
former chief of strategic studies at the Department of
National Defense (DND), Robles knows whereof he
speaks. He makes no qualms about being an unabashed
admirer and acolyte of JPE, his boss at the DND for more
than a decade. He looks up to the former martial law
administrator as an adoring son to a father.
Robles admits to that, as well. “JPE is my father,” he
says.
Robles just happens to
be one of about a dozen
officers who nurture a
fatal-attraction kind of
attachment to the man
whose breakaway from
the Marcos dictatorship
toppled the martial law
regime and helped install
Cory Aquino into the
presidency in February 1986.
Those officers include Colonel (and now Senator)
Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan, the pin-up boy of JPE’s
patriarchal sway; Red Kapunan, Tito Legaspi and Felix
Turingan, who worshipped the path that JPE walked on,
and followed him to the trenches through peaks and pits,
at all cost.
Robles says JPE has a “good, soft side,” but the national
mindset misunderstood him “because he has a powerful
personality.” He explains that much of the misconception
stemmed from JPE’s role as chief implementor of Marcos’
mailed fist policy.
“It was martial law, for heaven’s sake! Did you
expect him to behave like a pussy cat?” Robles argues.
Implementing martial law was difficult “because there
were no real guidelines.” Besides, he asks, “Meron bang [is
there a] benign martial law?”
He adds: “JPE
was given a mission
and he delivered.”
Journalists who
pounded the Camp
Aguinaldo
beat
while JPE was at
the helm recall
an era of fear and
intimidation from
the man widely
regarded as second
most powerful in the
country. “He spoke
words that struck
fear in the heart of
a listener. JPE can
make you piss in
your pants,” recalls
one journalist.
A n o t h e r
incident that may
be
considered
an urban legend
has JPE severely
reprimanding
another
reporter
for a story that questioned the suicide of movie star
Alfie Anido, suggesting instead that JPE’s son Jackie
had something to do with it. Anido was reportedly the
boyfriend of JPE’s daughter Katrina. Jackie and Katrina
are JPE’s children with his elegant wife, Cristina Castañer.
But Ed Pangilinan, in a message via Facebook to this
writer, says he does not remember such an incident.
Pangilinan was then an assistant at the DND press office
and a buddy to many reporters. He was resolute though,
about one thing: the Anido case was never discussed in
DND circles. Robles confirms Pangilinan’s recollection.
“As far as we know, Anido was a suicide,” he says.
Jackie went on to pursue a corporate career in the
family-owned Jaka Corporation and in 1998, was elected
representative of the First District of Cagayan, a position
that JPE once held. JPE has never been coy about his
dream of seeing his son in the Senate by 2013. Already, the
younger Enrile has been included in the list of senatorial
candidates in the UNA party headed by former president
Joseph Estrada and Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Another Enrile in the Senate might just be the apt
crowning glory to the
historied political career
of JPE. “He is one of the
more enigmatic figures
in Philippine history,”
Robles says. “He talks
tough, but he has a
golden heart. He is a
complex personality who
can switch personalities. But it was only at the Corona
impeachment trial that the true quality of JPE was
exposed,” the former military officer continues.
About a month after Enrile granted them a surprise
three-hour interview, Colegio de San Agustin high school
students Riane Manuel, Rem dela Cruz, Jamie Gutierrez
and Kaye Pavino were still reeling from the encounter.
The group had chosen the Senate President for their entry
in the “My Dream Interview” contest launched by the
Philippine Daily Inquirer in cooperation with the World
Association of Newspapers.
The teeners were dumbstruck that the iconic JPE, the
“rock star” of the Corona impeachment trial, would lay
bare his life as a deprived fatherless boy in a seemingly
dead-end town in Gonzaga, Cagayan in a lengthy,
He is a complex
personality who can
switch personalities.

Known as the “City of
Stars,” Quezon City
now hopes to become
an indie haven, too.
QUEZON CITY, Philippines - The Quezon City
Film Development Commission (QCFDC) recently
launched QCinema: 2012 Quezon City Film
Festival.
A flagship project of the QCFDC, the fest is
consistent with the local government’s goal to turn
the “City of Stars” into “a center of arts and culture
as well,” according to Vice-Mayor Joy Belmonte.
The fest aims to “give ‘emerging’ filmmakers
the chance to create their dream movies,” said
Belmonte. The QCFDC defines “an emerging
filmmaker” as someone with “no more than three
feature-length films to his or her credit.”
Seed grant
Belmonte said that three finalists would be given
a seed production grant of P800,000.
“We want to encourage new directors to join the
industry,” said filmmaker Soxie Topacio, a member of
the QCFDC. “Hopefully, next year we will be able
to increase the grant to P1 million and we will have
10 entries.”
“It is only through the promotion of new ideas
and styles in filmmaking can film literature and
culture improve in our country,” said filmmaker Milo
Sogueco, a QCFDC member. “There are so many
young and talented filmmakers… who can make
films that can matter in our society.”
UP Film Institute’s Ed Lejano, executive director
of the QCFDC, pointed out that its grant-giving
component precisely makes QCinema different
from the annual Metro Manila Film Festival
(MMFF), organized by the Metropolitan Manila
Development Authority (MMDA).
Sogueco noted: “The QCFDC upholds the values
of real independent cinema: Free, liberating and
unbiased.” “Also, the filmmakers will retain their rights
to the films,” Lejano noted.
The QCFDC, however, reserves the right to
screen the films in selected events “primarily for
educational purposes,” said Topacio.
True to its independent spirit, Lejano envisions
the QCinema as the city’s answer to the Sundance
film festival in the United States. “But we’d rather
define it as our own festival within the parameters of
the city.”
Request
Organizers request that the completed film
include “at least one sequence shot in Quezon
City.” “We are just requesting; we are not imposing.
We will monitor the filmmakers’ progress,” Topacio
clarified.
Filmmakers will be allowed to tackle any theme,
for as long as it will not put the city in a bad light,
he added. Organizers are eyeing a red-carpet
premiere of the three films in the first week of
December, in a mall in the city.
“All we ask is that the proceeds of the premiere
go to the QCFDC to cover expenses,” he said.
Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista recalled
that the city mounted a film festival for students in
2008.
Movie capital
This year’s festival, according to Bautista, is in
line with the local government’s program to reinvent
Quezon City to make it “a movie capital—not just
for the local, but for the international market as
well.”
“Aside from being the ‘City of Stars,’ we want
Quezon City to be known as a movie capital like
Bangkok and Hong Kong,” said Bautista. “We want
to attract international productions to shoot in our
city.”
The QCFDC was established in 2006 when
Bautista was still vice mayor. The QCFDC is
considered as “the governing body for all filmrelated projects and activities in the city.”
“Cities all over the world have their own film
commissions,” said Lejano. “Quezon City is the first
to have a film commission.”

MANILA, Philippines - President
Aquino thanked China for the loan
that it extended to the Philippines to
fund the second phase of the Angat
Water Utilization and Aqueduct
Improvement Project (AWUAIP) of
the Metropolitan Waterworks and
Sewerage System (MWSS).
President Aquino shares the stage

The President did not mention
the country’s territorial dispute with
China but stressed the importance
of cooperation among neighboring
countries and the importance of
respecting the dignity of every person
and country.
“Nagpapasalamat po tayo sa

Aquino said in his speech.
When asked by reporters,
Ambassador Ma declined to
comment on developments in the

“Sorry, I came here just for
this project. I’m not prepared

saying she had to proceed to another

assuring the security of water supply
for the MWSS service area.
The President said it would prevent

Dolphy’s early years in showbiz:
From vaudeville to a certified movie star
Born Rodolfo Vera Quizon in Tondo, Manila
on July 25, 1928, Dolphy was a sickly child
who suffered from severe asthma. The second
child in a brood of ten, he recalled how his
illness kept him from socializing with other
kids his age. “Noong araw, kung hindi mo ako
kausapin, hindi rin kita kakausapin. Tahimik na
tahimik akong tao. Masyado ang [inferiority]
complex ko. Kasi may hika ako, kaya lumalayo
ako sa tao pirme. Kasi kapag nadidinig ko
yung tunog ng lalamunan ko, nahihiya ako. At
saka payat na payat ako noon,” said Dolphy in
StarStudio’s special tribute for him in its June
issue.
It was his love for the movies of Hollywood’s
pioneer comedians which provided him an
escape and a constant source of entertainment
throughout his childhood. “Mahilig ako niyan.
Mula pa noong Three Stooges, Chaplin.
Naaaliw ako talaga. Maski iyong sakit ko,
nawawala kapag nakakapanood ako.” Little did
he know that show business would also become
his life-long passion in the years ahead.
During the Japanese Occupation in the
country, Dolphy and the rest of his siblings were
forced to earn a living as their father Melencio
Espino Quizon (a Filipino with Spanish and
French blood) couldn’t work and had to take
refuge in a bolt-hole in their home built by
his mother Salud dela Rosa Vera (a Spanish
mestiza) for fear of being caught given his
seemingly American features. Dolphy found
various odd jobs, from being shoeshine boy
and coachman to garments factory worker and
stevedore at the pier.
His sister Corazon found work as a chorus
girl at the Avenue Theater on Avenida, Rizal.
The then 16-year-old Dolphy was tasked to
bring her food everyday, until such time he
joined the theater group as a chorus boy. “Later
binigyan na ako ng solo number. Noong nasama
na ako sa Avenue, sa chorus line, mayroon
akong kapirasong parte na solo na pamvaudeville.” But it was while he was working
in Alegra Theater, right after the liberation in
1945, that he crossed paths with a group of
comedians Pugo, Tugo, Tugak, and heartthrob
Fernando Poe Sr.
During the late ‘40s, he first became known
as Golay (after the store Golay Hardware in
Raon Street) in comedy skits where he played
a Chinoy with broken Tagalog. In early 1952,
Pancho Magalona, one of the most popular
actors in the 1940s, saw his act at the Manila
Grand Opera House. Pancho then introduced
him to Doc Perez of Sampaguita Pictures, who
in turn, gave him the name Dolphy. His first
movie under Sampaguita Pictures was Isang
Sulyap Mo Tita (1954). He was eventually
catapulted to stardom when he played a gay role
in the movie Jack en Jill (1954) which also topbilled Lolita Rodriguez and Rogelio dela Rosa.
Dolphy established a name for himself in
showbiz during the succeeding years. His
first ever TV show in ABS-CBN was Buhay
Artista (1964) with co-star Panchito, which was
conceptualized by Eugenio “Geny” Lopez and
Ading Fernando. At the same time, Dolphy also
starred in movies under independent production
outfits with films like Captain Barbell and
Daigdig ng Fantasia. In 1965, Dolphy finally put
up his own production outfit, RVQ Productions,
and produced his first film Buhay Artista
starring Panchito, Susan Roces, and Ronaldo
Valdez, whom he discovered.
Throughout the next 60-plus years, he would
be called everything from the local Charlie
Chaplin to his nickname Pidol to the one tag
that stuck in the public consciousness: Comedy
King.

LEFT, Verth Bugtong is the most visible officer of PIDC, here seen introducing the program at the Mabuhay Ball.
RIGHT, Rosemer Enverga Is his counterpart with arch-rival organization PCCF, here convincing the crowds to
subscribe to GMA-7 in Montreal.
In any organization, there is always one officer who
is most visible, by virtue of their energy, the enthusiasm
for the job, rapport with people specially the press that
you would think that they are the president.
It’s not always the case.
In the case of Philippine Independence Day Council
or PIDC, Verth Bugtong is actually the Business
Manager, not the president. The president is Norma
Carpio. Verth was also the familiar face when they
presented their PIDC candidates to the press last
spring.
With Philippine Canadian Charitable Foundation
or PCCF, it is Rosemer Enverga.
When I attended the PIDC Mabuhay Ball, it was
like attending the event for the very first time. Gone are
the usual officers we knew closely . Some of them like
Rosemer Enverga has left to start a rival organization,
the PCCF, along with other members, who either left
or “are not with PIDC anymore.” Others are not active
anymore like Suzy Llanera and Karen Pascual, who is
sort of active. Karen, wants to spend more time with
her family. Who can blame her? Spending time with
an organization can sap one’s time and energy.
As I presented myself to Minda Neri, they looked
for my table. Me and another photographer, Ariel
Ramos, do not have a table.
Enter Verth.
Verth is running back and forth fixing things at the
last minute.
“I’ll find you a table,” Verth says, scurrying away
from us. Of course, it was his job being the gala vicechair. But I think it was more than the job.
So, I had no doubt he’ll find us one.
And he did. it was a table with just me and Ariel. By
the way, another photgrapher also did not have a table
but found one somewhere also.
With PCCF, you would be forgiven if you mistake
Rosemer Enverga as the president. She is actually the
Vice-president. The president is Jimmy Marasigan.
At the Pinoy Fiesta VIP Night, she was the one
people approach to ask questions, or for some other
reasons.
When the night is over, she is the one giving orders
as to who will get what, who will pick who and so forth.
I told her she reminds me of my sister who was bossy
when each one of her daughters got married. One
time, she stopped giving orders. Ironically, nobody also
moved and they ended up behind schedule.
Organizations are lucky to have people like them.
It makes the job of running smoother and less
stressful.

BENDING BACKWARDS
continued from page 1
Rosario spoke out against Chinese “duplicity” and
“intimidation” in the South China Sea, noting that
China failed to honor an agreement to pull out all
ships from the shoal.
In the interview, Aquino said his government
has not been engaged in a media war or entered
into international arbitration to settle the issue.
“We have tried to
be as reasonable as
possible. In fact, we’ve
been bending over
backwards, we try to
look at it from their
perspective, and we
try to see, hopefully
that they look at it
from our perspective
and really achieve
some reasonableness
in terms of the actions
of both parties,” he
said.
He added: “I don’t think I have been as
belligerent as some sectors are saying. I should be
tougher. But I think we have given them all of the
necessary means and steps to avoid having the ‘loss
of face’ aspect, trying to come up with something
that is doable immediately. And we’re waiting for
appropriate response from their side.”
Preparing for contingencies
The President conceded that the government
is preparing for contingencies if in case the sea
dispute escalates into a shooting war. He noted,
however, that an escalation into violence is unlikely
at this point.
“Well, we are preparing contingencies for that
but we don’t think that is a likely possibility at
this point, or likely probability at this point. We
will not add to the conditions that will set about
such a situation. We will always endeavor to deescalate and pursue that option of talking about
this dispute and resolving it peacefully,” he said.
A Philippine military official, meanwhile, said at
least 30 Chinese fishing vessels deployed by China
at the Spratly Islands were monitored to be at more
than 300 nautical miles from Puerto Princesa City.
AFP Western Command chief Lt. Gen. Juancho
Sabban said the fishing vessels are being escorted
by a Chinese maritime ship while doing fishing at
the Kagitingan Reef or Fiery Cross Reef, which is
occupied by China.
Sabban said the military will not take action
against the Chinese fishing vessels. He also noted
the Chinese ships are outside the country’s 200mile Exclusive Economic Zone.
“We are not claiming [Kagitingan Reef ]. That’s
theirs. Why would we drive them away? They own
that one,” he said.

HK math olympics
MANILA, Philippines—Miguel Lorenzo
Ildesa, a Grade 6 student of the PAREFWestbridge School in Iloilo City, got a perfect
score and won the Philippines’ lone gold
medal in the just-concluded 15th Po Leung
Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest in
Hong Kong.
The country’s math team also bagged four
silver and five bronze medals, as well as two
group merit awards, in the 17-nation contest,
where the Philippines placed sixth overall,
according to Dr. Simon Chua, president of
the non-government Mathematics Trainers’
Guild Philippines (MTG) which headed the
country’s delegation to the annual contest.
Thailand topped this year’s competition,
followed by Taiwan, host Hong Kong,
Bulgaria and Singapore. Malaysia and
Indonesia took the seventh and eighth places.
The contest finals were held on Thursday,
said Chua in an e-mail to the INQUIRER.
The country’s silver medalists were Sedrick
Scott Keh of Xavier School, Raphael Villaluz
of San Beda College-Alabang, Shaquille

Terence Brian Tsai of Chiang Kai Shek

The bronze medals came courtesy of Mark

Snooky finds
Peace
MANILA, Philippines -- Veteran
actress Snooky Serna said she is
a reformed woman, thanks to her
change of faith.
Set to make her film acting
comeback, Serna on Friday
shared another milestone in her
life, which she credits for having
genuine “peace in [her] heart.”
Serna revealed that she
converted to become an adherent
of Iglesia ni Cristo in 2011.
“I don’t want to sound preachy
or nagpapa-bait, pero a lot of it
has to do with my change of faith,
kasi nag-Iglesia ni Cristo po ako,”
Serna told reporters on Friday,
referring to the positive changes
in her life.
“I wouldn’t want to say na, so
as not to offend anyone, na I just
want to personally want to say
that I found the truth, I found my
truth, and I’m in a very good place,
and I’m so happy na nagkaroon
ako siguro ng banal na takot, as
they would say it po sa Iglesia,”
she added.
‘Past is past’
Serna said that because of her
new faith, she has outgrown “bad
habits” and has become more
mindful of her decisions.
Among her recent life decisions
is her “choice” to be single.
Now, with renewed fervor,
Serna returns to a film set after a
prolonged absence from the big
screen.
She is set to star with actor
Coco Martin and actress Marian
Rivera in a Regal Films production.
The film, directed by Maryo J. de
los Reyes, is expected to premiere
later this year.

netizens were shocked by this news and urged
a boycott on her businesses in China.”
Unfortunately for Lewis’ former Chinese
business partners who bought out Lewis’
ownership interest in the “Beatrice” stores – at
a substantial discount – several years ago, the
China authorities are boycotting a whollyowned Chinese business.
In her July 14 press conference in Manila,
Lewis explained that her group’s call for the
global boycott of all kinds of China-made
products was a way of matching China’s
diplomatic and military arrogance in claiming
ownership of the Scarborough Shoal and
the Kalayaan Group of Islands in the West
Philippine Sea.
“The ‘Boycott Made in China Goods’
campaign will not be limited to Filipinos.
This campaign will be carried out globally to
encourage all the people of the world to join,”
Lewis said.
Ted Laguatan, USP4GG spokesman, said
in the same press conference that he expects
the campaign to go viral. “We hope to achieve
the level of response and outrage that was
generated when the Americans found out
that the US Olympic team’s uniforms for
the London 2012 Olympics were made in
China,” Laguatan said.
At the press conference, Lewis also
announced that her US Pinoys group will
initiate the Global Day of Prayer for Peace
in the Scarborough Shoal on August 21, the
29th anniversary of the martyrdom of Ninoy
Aquino.
On August 21, 2011, USP4GG sponsored
a Day of Prayer for Peace in the Spratlys
which was held in 175 cities throughout
North America. “This year the global
target is 300 cities,” said Charito Benipayo,
coordinator of the 2011 Northern California
prayer campaign that was held in 20 cities in
Northern California.

Buses screening Offensive films,
Beware
MTRCB Chair Grace PoeLlamanzares
Jean & Bids 60th Anniversary with family
MANILA, Philippines
- Aside from monitoring
TV shows and films for
sensitive content, the
Movie and Television
Review and Classification Board (MTRCB)
is also on the lookout for bus operators that
allow exhibition of adult materials in their
vehicles, according to Board chair Mary
Grace Poe-Llamanzares.
“We are pushing for preprogrammed
content in public utility buses,” Llamanzares
told the Inquirer on Tuesday.
Penalties
The MTRCB chief said an agreement
with the Land Transportation Franchising
and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) was signed
recently that would penalize bus companies
showing sensitive materials.
“However, we have a little less than 15,000
buses in Metro Manila alone. Realistically,
we are not able to monitor all these so we
ask for the vigilance of the public,” she said.
Llamanzares added that her office has
already sent “show-cause letters” to some
bus operators and received a number of
responses. “Each time they commit a
violation, they have to pay P10,000—that’s
a lot. Plus, there’s the hassle of hiring a
lawyer. I think they’d rather be on the safe
side,” she said.
Llamanzares also said the MTRCB has
been working on a solution alongside Elvira
Medina, president of the National Center
for Commuter Safety and Protection
(NCCSP).

Bids and Jean Herrera celebrate their 60th Anniversary with close friends and family.
“Her group’s suggestion was for bus
companies to buy preprogrammed materials.
She already brought some materials to
the office for our approval,” explained the
MTRCB chief. “Not only does this help
fight piracy, it’s also income-generating. On
the side of the bus operators, they can sell
advertising spots.”
‘I will not cower,’ Garcia says on
raps
CEBU CITY, Cebu - Cebu Governor
Gwendolyn Garcia, under siege from the
Aquino administration after being declared
one of the senatorial candidates of emerging
opposition coalition United Nationalist
Alliance (UNA), posted a P90,000 bail over
graft charges the Ombudsman Conchita
Carpio-Morales filed against her over an
alleged anomalous purchase in 2008 of a
25-hectare property but the suspension on
her will carry.
Garcia posted the bail ahead of an arrest
warrant and prior to her delivering the State
of the Province Address (Sopa) in Cebu
City.
“I will face this and I will not cower,”
Garcia said in reaction to the filing of the
case against her.
L. M. Confidential
The Ombudsman is a known ally of
President Aquino, having administered
Aquino’s oath of office when he was elected
President in the 2010 elections.
The UNA felt the timing of the filing of
the case against Garcia was part of a political
assault against UNA from the ruling party
while UNA leader Senate President Juan
Ponce Enrile, who attended Garcia’s Sopa,
said the motive behind the filing of the case
against Garcia was “obviously political.”
Enrile, however, said
the charges against Garcia
would not affect her
inclusion in the UNA
senatorial line up. “She
is innocent until proven
guilty of the charges,”
Enrile said.
An emotional Garcia
said during the her Sopa address the timing
of the filing of the graft charges before
the Sandiganbayan last Thursday and the
immediate raffling of the case yesterday
proves politics was at work behind the case.
Garcia said she was thankful to those
“responsible for all of these machinations
as the people can see through the ugly
hand of political harassment and political
persecution” behind it.
Garcia said the objective of those who
filed the case was to stop her from delivering
the Sopa the other day.
Earlier, UNA described the case against
Garcia as “political harassment.”

“At its heart ASIS has a cadre of
highly trained intelligence officers who
recruit and run agents,” Warner said.
ASIS filed thousands of secret
reports each year covering everything
from “political developments, economic
growth, defense modernization, and
social cohesion in a particular country, to
terrorist and insurgent planning,” he said.
He said the 9/11 attacks and the
Bali bombings a year later in 2002 had
redefined how spies worked.
Those events had seen ASIS –
basically, Australia’s foreign spy agency –
intensify its focus on the “very real threat”
posed by organizations like Al-Qaeda
and its affiliates.
The threats had seen ASIS evolve from
“a small, essentially regional body vitally
focused on the Cold War into a larger,
geographically dispersed organization”
that liaises with foreign intelligence
services in 70 countries.
While terrorism remained a major
worry, cyber security had also become a
“rapidly evolving and potentially serious
threat” to national security, Warner added.
“Government departments and
agencies, together with corporate
Australia, have been subject to concerted
efforts by external actors seeking to
infiltrate sensitive computer networks,”
he said.
Warner gave no examples, but the
computers of Australia’s prime minister,
foreign and defense ministers were
reported last March to have been hacked,
with China under suspicion.
Energy giants Woodside Petroleum
and Shell Australia have both expressed
concern over hacking, with Woodside
chief Don Voelte saying his firm had seen
attempts from regions including Russia,
eastern Europe and China.
Canberra has described government
and private networks as being under
“continuous threat” of cyber espionage.
“Considerable resources are now being
invested by the government to counter
this threat and harden the defenses of
departments and agencies,” said Warner.

“Making indie films is refreshing,” she
said. “Some indie filmmakers are afraid to
approach mainstream artists, but I’m always
game. Indie movies would benefit from the
services of trained professional actors. On
the other hand, mainstream actors would
get the chance to play challenging roles.”
It’s a win-win proposition, she noted.
Real women
She recalled that shooting “Tulad ng
Dati” was a blast. “I’m friends with [the rock
band] The Dawn and the movie was about
them.” In “Huling Biyahe,” she consented to
do a love scene shot in a cramped car.
In “Mumunting Lihim,” she unleashes a
number of f_ _ _ words as a “complicated”
and “unsympathetic” woman.
“My character Sandra is very real,” she
said. “Direk Joey told me to think of truelife women as pegs. I can’t reveal who they
are, though.”
Aiza Seguerra, 25 years after
“Eat Bulaga” discovery Aiza Seguerra
was only 4 when she won the hearts of
televiewers with delightfully witty ad-libs
and one-liners. She wasn’t as pretty as
some of the other tots on the show’s “Little
Miss Philippines” tilt but her spontaneously
gamine performance made that “lack”
totally irrelevant.
Nobody remembers who won that year’s
kiddie tilt, but everybody still dotes on
Aiza to this day, some 25 years after the big
first impression she made.
Well, “everybody” could be an
exaggeration, since there are some viewers
and former fans who haven’t
quite forgiven Aiza for
growing up and being true
to herself by admitting
that she’s more than just a
frisky “tomboy”—she really
prefers girls, period.
Coming out
It must have taken real guts for her to
“come out” in so clear and honest fashion,
especially in this country where girls
are supposed to be sugar and spice and
everything nice—no arguments about it!
Yes, local show biz did have its “female
Elvis Presley of the Philippines,” but Aiza
has “come out” much further than that!
Still a star
On the other hand, Aiza’s honesty and
courage made some people admire and love
her more. They know full well the great
risk she was taking of being rejected by her
fans, so they cheer the fact that this hasn’t
happened, and that Aiza remains a star,
even as many of her contemporaries have
faded from view.
Risky move
Another risky move that Aiza took was
to radically adjust her career focus and
concentrate on her musical talent, as a
singer and instrumentalist, and cut down
on her comedic and dramatic portrayals.
She didn’t have a great, big birit voice;
she could have faltered and failed—but,
so great was her belief in herself, her
emotions and her intelligence that her
self-reinvention as an acoustic musical
performer turned out to be a smash hit.

Best news of all
Which proves that, if you’re true to
yourself and objective in your appreciation
of what you have to offer to your audience,
you really can’t go wrong.
These days, the best news of all is that,
even as her musical career continues to
prosper, Aiza has also rediscovered and
strengthened her skills as an actor, with
her new teleserye, “Be Careful With My
Heart,” strongly showcasing her thespic
gift in the attention-calling co-starring role
of female lead Jodi Santamaria’s “tomboy”
sister.
A total performer
Just in the nick of time, as she’s marking
her 25th year in the biz, Aiza is proving
that she’s become a total performer. Indeed,
she’s so good that, come next season, we
hope that a savvy, canny producer will beat
others to the draw by coming up with an
all-singing, all-acting cinematic or theater
showcase for her, to make the “silver”
celebration official.
If you feel the same way, make your own
celebratory voices be heard—and proclaim
to the world why you admire and love the
“new and improved” Aiza Seguerra!
What made Dawn say ‘yes’ to
indie
In case you haven’t noticed, this year’s
Cinemalaya Film
Festival (which
opens at the CCP
this year) features
entries topbilling big
stars recruited from
mainstream cinema.
One of them is Dawn
Zulueta who stars in Ang Nawawala
(What Isn’t There), which is supported by
the National Commission on Culture and
the Arts (NCCA).
“It’s my dream film,” said Cinemalaya
newcomer Marie Jamora (a Film graduate
from Columbia University) who directed
the film from a screenplay she co-wrote
with Ramon De Vera. “I’ve been thinking
about it for years. There’s nothing better
than being able to make it with some of
my best friends who also happen to be very
good at their jobs. I have never been so
happy on the set in my life. It’s also because
of our cast. I got everyone I wanted.”
In Ang Nawawala, Dawn plays a mother
still hurting from a tragic loss, with
Dominic Roco as her son who stopped
speaking when he was a child and, now
20, is back home on his first visit in three
years from his studies abroad. It’s a heartwrenching family drama set against the
vibrant local music scene as mother and
AUGUST 2012
son redefine their relationship with
themselves and the people around them.
“I agreed to do Ang Nawawala because
of the material,” Dawn told Funfare. “It’s
actually my second indie film; the first
was Sigwa by director Joel Lamangan
shown also at the Cinemalaya in 2010.
Just like Sigwa, Ang Nawawala offered
me a challenge I seldom ever get in
mainstream films. The roles offered to me
in indie films are very diverse compared
to what I’m used to doing in TV.”
Asked what the difference is between
doing indie and doing TV, Dawn said,
“I think that there is more artistic and
creative freedom in indie films because
we are not trying to fit into a commercial
mold. Indie films simply focus on telling
a story in a most realistic method in
terms of performance, material and
setting. As an actor, I am liberated
from the norm in what TV offers us as
artists. I am able to dig deeper into a
character’s expressions and nuances without
compromising.”
Meanwhile, the whole country (nay,
the whole world, thanks to TFC!) is
glued night after night on the extended
runaway top-rater ABS-CBN soap Walang
Hanggan which reunites Dawn with exboyfriend Richard Gomez. In the soap,
Dawn not only unwittingly steals scenes
with her natural acting style but also with
her stunning good looks untouched by
cosmetic surgery. Commented a Walang
Hanggan follower, “Dawn could pass
for the daughter of a certain actress who
obviously has had her face lifted over and
over again. She should avoid standing
beside Dawn or else she would end up
looking like Dawn’s mother.”
Has the extension of Walang Hanggan
taken a toll on Dawn’s family?
“I’m fortunate that I have an
understanding husband (Davao
Congressman Anton Lagdameo) who
appreciates the success that Walang
Hanggan is enjoying now. I also schedule
my priorities, and keep my weekends free
and spend with him and the kids. So when
Walang Hanggan finally winds up I’ll be
looking forward to getting my life back so
that I can make bawi with them naman.
Anton is running for reelection and the
campaign period will start next year so the
family will be together again to enjoy the
summer break.”
Told that Richard’s wife, Ormoc Rep.
Lucy Torres, has been an avid fan of the
Dawn/Richard tandem even long before
she met Richard, and is now one of the
religious followers of Walang Hanggan,
Dawn said that she’s grateful to Lucy for
her candor and consummate moral support.
“I think that Lucy is an incredibly
admirable woman and wife to Richard,”
added Dawn. “He is very fortunate because
of her.”
JM de Guzman prefers Career to
Lovelife
JM De Guzman admitted he is still on
cloud nine after the success of the Angelito:
Ang Batang Ama’s first season. The
23-year-old actor said that this is the time
for him to prioritize his
career over everything
else. “Una siyempre
yung career ko ngayon.
Sobrang binigay lang ito
out of the blue. I came
from nothing, I came
from zero. Actor lang
ako nun pero ngayon
meron na akong dumadating na blessings
na hindi ko ito aaksayahin. So gusto ko
na mas ma-improve pa ito, mas umangat
pa hopefully. Sa ngayon talaga wala akong
kinakatakutan, kung ano man yung naging
issues basta ginagawa ko yung trabaho ko,”
he shared.

Phenomenal Box Office Star Vice Ganda

Vice Ganda said he is confident that
he and Kris would be an effective comic

Eddie Garcia
REDEMPTION
continued from page 19
Putting the Gay Character in Perspective
”Years
back, Eddie Garcia played a screaming faggot in Paru-Parong
Buking (with George Estregan and Eddie Rodriguez, both
deceased) which you, if you’re insomniac, can catch in later-night TV re-run.
Recalled Ricky Davao (as Eddie’s lover), “Tito Eddie was very playful. When
the director shouted ‘Action!’ during our bed scene, he slipped his hand into
my private part and pressed it.”
In Bwakaw, an entry in the
2012 Cinemalaya, Eddie again
plays a gay character but this
time quiet, reserved and gentle,
reminiscent of Colin Firth’s
gay in A Single Man and that
of Christopher Plummer in
Beginners who won a Best
Supporting Oscar for it.
“I love the role,” Eddie told
Funfare Update in a one-onone. “Pag titingnan mo, lalaki
siya; hindi siya mukhang
bading. It’s as good as the
pasaway old patient I played in
ICU No. 7 in Cinemalaya 2005,
and in the two other indies I
did not for Cinemalaya, Ika-10
and 100 Years.”
All four indies were directed
by the new breed of directors.
Himself an A-list director,
Eddie toes the line, so to speak,
and gives input only when very
necessary, take it or leave it, no
hard feelings.
“If I feel that a scene may
be done better,” said Eddie,
“ibinubulong ko na lang sa
direktor ko. It’s up to him to
follow it or not. I don’t impose.”
The gay Eddie plays in
Bwakaw is an old unmarried
man in his twilight year, living
by his lonesome with only his
pet dog as companion and
preparing for his final farewell
by buying his own casket,
sorting out his personal effects
in boxes tagged with names of
receivers.
Armida ‘Tita Midz’ SiguionReyna as co-star
Starring with Eddie is
Armida “Tita Midz” SiguionReyna as Eddie’s girlfriend
in their younger years, also
unmarried and now confined in
a home for aged afflicted with
Alzheimer’s Disease.
“My character told Armida’s

character that I was gay so
hindi natuloy ang romansa
namin,” added Eddie. “I would
visit her at the home for the
aged until one day, she came
back to her senses and asked me
to stop visiting her. It’s a very
moving story.”
Now into his golden years,
Eddie said that he took the role
to heart, immersing himself in
it.
For the record, according to
Eddie, he’s only into his 80s,
contrary to popular belief that
he’s in his 90s.
“Actually, I turned only
83 last May,” he clarified. “I
am 10 months younger than
Dolphy with whom I started
at Sampaguita Pictures back in
the late ’50s.”
The mistake was committed
by the late Ike Lozada during
an interview years ago.
“I think he misheard me and
added 10 years to my age but I
never bothered to correct it. My
birthday is May 2, 1929. Every
time people asked how old I
was, I would say, ‘Di ba nabasa
n’yo na how old I am.’ One
time, Ramon (Revilla, another
Sampaguita contemporary) and
I were making a movie and he
told me, ‘Eddie Boy, bakit hindi
mo kinorek ito? Nadagdagan
ng 10 years ang edad mo. E,
ako, alam nila na mas matanda
ako sa’yo ng two years, kaya
tumatanda tuloy ako.’ I think
I was 55 at that time, so
kung ilalagay ko sa 65, eh di
magiging 67 siya.”
Having done every role in the
book (a soldier, a rebel, a priest,
a playboy, bida or kontrabida),
does Eddie have any dream
role, one he hasn’t played?
“None. I just wait for what
offer comes along.”
I told Eddie that besides
being gentlemen (hmmm,
ladies’ men), he and Dolphy
PCCF Beauties perform at
have a lot in common. Dolphy
said that he didn’t need Viagra
(“Zsa Zsa is my Viagra,” he said
in jest), what about Eddie?
He laughed. “Okay pa si
Manoy!”
Still taking almost 20
vitamins and sticking to a strict
diet and sleeping routine (at
least eight hours every night),
Eddie said that he continues
to practice “everything in
moderation.” Including having
sex? “Well,” he laughed again,
“yes. I eat only when I’m
hungry and I do ‘it’ only when I
feel like it…in moderation.”
Like Dolphy, too, Eddie has
campaigned for his showbiz
friends (like FPJ) venturing into
politics but he himself has been
turning down invitations to run
(perhaps in his native Irosin,
Sorsogon?).
“I believe in Dolphy’s advice,”
said Eddie.
You know: Madali ang
tumakbo. Eh, paano kung
manalo?
Armida Siguion-Reyna co-stars
with Eddie Garcia in Bwakaw
on the seventh floor.
“I gave my name to the teleponista
[telephone girl] who then led me to
my father’s room. I saw an old man,
fair-skinned, white haired, with
eyeglasses. He wore khaki, like me. I
thought he was a general. He stood
up, walked towards me. Niyakap nya
ako at sabi nya (He embraced me and
said), ‘Sorry, my son.’”
“Umiyak sya at ako, napaiyak na rin.
Nagkatagpo kami ng Tatay ko! Noong
matapos na ang yakapan namin,
medyo naiilang na ako. Twenty-one
years old na ako at niyayakap ko itong
mamang hindi ko kaano-ano [He
wept and that made me cry too. I had
found my father! But afterwards, I felt
awkward. Here I was, 21 years old,
and embracing a man I hardly knew],”
JPE recounted.
Now officially acquainted, Alfonso
asked JPE what he wanted to do
with his life. “I told him I just wanted
to go back to school. He did not
say anything,” JPE said. That day,
Alfonso brought JPE to a big house
in Malabon to meet his father’s other
children and their mother, Purita.
But he did not transform into a
rich man’s son overnight. JPE said
he helped with the household chores.
He became the gardener, electrician,
mechanic. He became his father’s
driver, and later on, the family driver.
He was also enrolled at St. James in
Malabon, a private school run by the
Maryknoll sisters. Alfonso took legal
steps to change his son’s name from
Juanito Furagganan to Juan Ponce
Enrile, the name that he would use
when he enrolled for pre-law at the
Ateneo de Manila.
Enrile finished pre-law in 1949, cum
laude, and moved on to the University
of the Philippines for law proper. He
passed the bar in 1953, eight years
after he, as Juanito Furagganan, the
poor fisherfolk’s son from Gonzaga,
Cagayan, took a nomad’s journey to
find his father in Manila, and pursue
his dreams.
After obtaining a Master of Laws
degree specializing in taxation and
corporate organization at the Harvard
University, JPE returned to Manila
determined “to go deeply in law
practice.” He said he helped organize
mining companies but lawyered as
well for the country’s top businesses
like the Ayala Corporation, Lepanto
and Philex Mines, and Hacienda
Luisita in Central Luzon, somehow
acquiring “notoriety” along the way,

in heart with PAFCOM in making the

Park, New Jersey a truly successful event.
R&B royalties Jay R and Kris Lawrence,
and beauty titlist Krista Kleiner joined
the parade, and performed before their
kababayans during the GMA Pinoy
Celebrity Hour segment.
PAFCOM President Bong Pena said
the participation of the Kapuso stars
contributed largely to the accomplishment
of their goal of coming together as a team,
and in bridging the gap among different
generations.
“The GMA artists selected for this
event represented what PAFCOM was
trying to accomplish. I was happy to see the
excitement they caused among the younger
audience, [but more so] when I saw many
of the aunties and lolas dancing to the
current tunes. [I can really tell that] the
crowd was really into their performances.”
Mr. Pena added that he was very
pleased with the turnout especially with the
return of some groups who used to join the
parade on a regular basis, as well as with
the increase in the number of participating
ethnic groups.
According to him, around 13,000 to
16,000 people came to witness the parade
and the Kapuso show, where GMA Pinoy
TV gave away prizes and Kapuso items as
souvenirs. This was followed by a meet and
greet, where fans got the chance to take

PAFCOM, and are truly honored to have

one way or another.”

Sam Milby Bedazzled By An NYC-based
Model
MANILA, Philippines – Acoustic heartthrob Sam
Milby has returned to the country with a content heart
not only because he has been able to take some time to
pursue his “American dream” but also because he’s able
to fulfill a wish—to find new love in the Big Apple.
“I did meet somebody, nakilala ko siya [within] a
month and a half [of my stay there]…” Milby said.
Although he wasn’t trying to hide that he “likes” her,
Milby was a little careful in dishing out details about the
lucky girl so as not to preempt whatever it is that could
bloom between them.
“Hindi ko pa puwedeng sabihin ang name niya kasi
we’re just friends, pero gusto ko siya... ‘pag may something
na talaga,” he assured, while adding, “Mahirap naman
kasi nandito na ako ulit tapos nasa New York siya.”
According to him, his mystery girl is a model in New
York City. “Hindi pa siya nakakapunta dito sa Pilipinas,
PIDC Independence
pero nag-modelling na siya sa SG [Singapore],” the
singer-actor related.
Milby shared he was attracted to her because of her
values.
“She’s a college graduate but… in modelling, there’s
a lot of things that thay want you to do pero hindi niya
ginagawa ‘cause she doesn’t believe it to be right—and I
just really appreciate that,” he enthused.
Kaye Abad ready to bare skin
Currently playing the role of the headstrong Jenny
in the Kapamilya Gold series Angelito:Ang Bagong
Yugto, Kaye Abad reveals she is ready to be more bold
in her portrayal of Jenny in this new season. “Hindi ko
pa alam pero kung sa book one eh pinag-bathing suit
at pinatakbo nila ako sa buhangin, hindi malabo dito
(laughs).
Although she is more open about being daring now,
Kaye says she still wants to set some limits on doing
sensitive scenes. “Kung kailangan talaga sa storya and
depende sa direction, kung paano yung treatment ng
director, yun siguro. At saka walang only wearing this,
kailangan naman kahit papano may damit (laughs),
yun,” she adds.

Melissa Ricks prefer Kontrabida Roles
Wala na raw mahihiling pa si Melissa Ricks sa
tinatamasang tagumpay ng kinabibilangan niyang
teleserye, ang Walang Hanggan na certified top-rater
sa primetime bida ng ABS-CBN. Bukod pa raw sa
magandang storya ng kanilang show, masaya rin daw
ang mga tao sa kanilang set. “Super chill lang kami.
Everyone is just having fun. And the writers are doing a
very very good job,” natutuwang sabi ng aktres.
Sa nasabing teleserye, may pagka-kontrabida ang
role ni Melissa, kung saan ginagampanan niya ang
role ni Johanna na inilarawan nga niya na may pagka“bratty.” Pahayag ng dalaga, mas gusto raw niya ang
ganitong roles dahil nakaka-challenge. “I actually prefer
doing kontrabida roles kesa sa bida roles. I enjoy ‘yung
nagsusuplada, ‘yung may inaaway,” paliwanag niya.
Dagdag pa niya, noong nakipag-meeting daw siya with
the bosses ay hiniling daw niya sa mga ito na bigyan siya
ng mga roles na kontrabida. “I want to get offbeat roles,
gray roles na kaaway nung bida. For some reason I enjoy
doing that better than inaapi, ako umiiyak ako.”

MANILA, Philippines - ABS-CBN’s
premier crime investigation program

anchored by Gus Abelgas debuted
strongly on its new, earlier timeslot as it

Wish Ko Lang with only 9.2 percent last

followers.
Besides SOCO, programs from ABSCBN’s newly launched news and current

and catching the attention of the young
politician, Ferdinand Marcos.
Elected president in 1965, Marcos
then invited JPE to join the government,
giving him the job of streamlining the
Insurance Commission, and later on,
weeding out the scalawags from the
Bureau of Customs. After serving as
Marcos Justice Secretary from 19681970, JPE got the top post at the
National Defense department that has
administrative control over the country’s
armed forces.
With such long association, the
Marcos-JPE alliance had become solid at
this point. No wonder that when Marcos
declared martial law in September 1972,
he cited an attempted ambush on JPE as
proof that the communists were in the
city, and could only be vanquished if the
nation was placed under military rule.
JPE would later confess that the ambush
was faked and was set up precisely to
justify the imposition of martial law.
Asked how he’d like to be addressed,
JPE told his young 14- and 15-year-old
interviewees: “Call me Manong Johnny,
Lolo Johnny, Papa Johnny.” Then he
warned them: “Don’t ask me how many
wives I have, or how many girlfriends.
How many children, grandchildren,
that’s OK. How much ill-gotten wealth?
I might get impeached!”
He has another side, he told his young
captive audience. “I was called all kinds
of names. Martial law administrator,
murderer, plunderer. I am this, I am that—
most distasteful, distrusted, despicable
human being—in this country. But I left
them alone. I don’t harbor any ill-will
against anybody. Sometimes I look stern
and very unforgiving but, you know, I just
can’t tolerate stupid people.”
Perhaps the late President Cory
Aquino was among the “stupid” people
JPE could not put up with, wryly
commented a veteran journalist. In
November 1986, President Cory ordered
the arrest of JPE and several officers for
the alleged “God Save the Queen” coup
plot. The plot was supposed to have
included the synchronized assassination
of at least 12 top government officials and
personalities in the Cory administration
and leaders from leftists groups. The goal
was to create chaos, depose President
Aquino and replace her with a military
junta to be headed by JPE.
The plot was nipped, but not necessarily
in the bud. The killing of popular labor
leader Rolando Olalia and student leader
Lean Alejandro were allegedly part of
the plot and were carried out before

the plot was uncovered. JPE was held

but was released for lack of evidence.
Rumors at that time had it that JPE
was part of the plot, but backed out
upon seeing the names of personalities
listed for liquidation. That reaction,
idle talk went, had the plotters privately
labeling the former defense minister as
“the reluctant tyrant.”
JPE would be linked again to the
August 1987 and December 1989 failed
coups against the Cory administration.
But evidence against him remained
mostly circumstantial.
Despite his running feud with
President Cory, who described him as
a fly (“langaw”) in one of her People
Power anniversary speeches, JPE was
elected senator in 1987 and earned
a seat as Cagayan representative in
1992. In 1995, he won a six-year term
as senator. He will step down next

People say the role has become his

and disappearance of many activists during
the martial law years. But who, when among
his staff at the DND, was said to have

Just who is the real JPE? Is he, in the
famous words of wartime British Prime

wrapped in mystery, inside an enigma?”
Enrile is reportedly writing his biography,
a personal account of his defining moments,
his storied life and his place in the country’s
