Lou Vallone At a special 4:30 Mass this Sunday at St. Mary Church of St. John of God Parish we will have a celebration that is "extra-parochial". It is the annual Mass for the Bishop's Latin School Alumni Association. Following the Mass, there will be a dinner at Rockefeller's at which various awards will be given by the BLSAA to people for their service to the Church in Pittsburgh. The dinner is a fund-raiser to aid in supporting vocations to the ordained clergy in our local Church. From 1961 to 1973, there was a Jesuit taught high school in Pittsburgh, founded by then Bishop John Wright, called the Bishop's Latin School. Academically modeled after the renowned Boston Latin School, and in the centuries old tradition of education that the Society of Jesus is famous for, it went beyond the normal secondary education parameters by basing its course of studies on the classic languages of Latin and Greek. But more than that, it was meant specifically as a preseminary high school, a place for young men to begin investigating and pursuing a possible vocation to the priesthood. I am a member of the founding class from over 50 years ago. The principal celebrant will be Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, the archbishop of Galveston-Houston, who entered two years after me. One of the award winners is Michael Gallagher who provides liturgical music at our CCD Mass once a month (and is a popular secular musician in our area, both live and on CD.) Our alumni include: an emeritus Dean of the Law School of Duquesne: former Legal Counsel of the diocese of Pittsburgh; several current employees of diocesan administration; a university president; published authors; teachers; priests of this and other dioceses and religious orders; permanent deacons; career military personnel active and retired; a former union president; medical doctors; business owners; managers; poets; professionals and laborers and blue collar workers; husbands and fathers and single laymen of many jobs and walks of life. All this from a school that never had more than 50 students in any one class, no more than 150 students at any one time, and was in existence for only 12 years, with less than 300 alumni, the last of whom graduated almost forty years ago. We welcome those who are attending. But careers and academics aside, this celebration is about the transmission of our Catholic Christian Faith across generations by the ordained and those who are priests by virtue of baptism only. We are proud to host it. “Ad maiorem Dei gloriam” (Does anyone know what this means?) ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA FLEA MARKET St. Catherine of Siena in Crescent Twp. Is having their annual Flea Market on Friday, Sept. 7, Saturday, Sept. 8 and Sunday, Sept. 9. All days begin at 9:00 AM and go until ??? TONS of items. We have something for everyone.
