Le Puy-en-Velay
With UNESCO World Heritage status and a departure point
for pilgrims travelling the Way of Saint James, the town lies
in a natural setting where water and fire have sculpted astonishing natural decor and man has elevated the beauty of
art. The protected raised quarter of Le Puy-en-Velay houses
a great number of historic and architectural treasures, including the imposing cathedral built on the flank of Mont Anis,
which has UNESCO World Heritage status and whose cloister
is well worth visiting. The nearby Hôtel-Dieu offers an interactive museum experience all about the local area and boasts
unique exhibitions. The Saint Michel d’Aiguilhe chapel, a jewel
in the crown of 10th and 12th-century Romanesque art perched 88 m atop a volcanic rock, together with the Notre
Dame de France statue which crowns the Corneille rock, add
to the grandeur of the site. Le Camino, a museum which welcomes pilgrims and provides tourists with information about
the Way of Saint James, is also well worth visiting.
Festivities:
Weekly market: enjoy the colourful atmosphere of Le
Plot market on Saturday mornings, when hand-picked
and farm produce from the surrounding countryside
makes its way into the town.
Interfolk Festival: every year during the third week of
July, the cultures of the world come together to celebrate cross-cultural friendship through dance, music
and singing. Shows, parades and other entertainment
put on by some 300 dancers and musicians from all of
the world’s continents.
Les Nuits basaltiques: this five-day music and traditional dance festival takes place in late July, offering
an astonishing spectacle with musicians representing
diverse backgrounds and styles.
Les Fêtes Renaissance du Roi de l’Oiseau: each year
in mid-September, the entire town goes into “Renaissance mode”. Le Puy-en-Velay goes on display as part
of this unmissable event.

Haute-Loire as you wind your way along roads that look as though they were designed with bikers in mind. After gliding over the high plateaux of

preserved treasures. From St-Privat-d’Allier and Saugues to Langeac, Chilhac and Lavaudieu... stone and water are combined with the lush countryside
in this extraordinarily beautiful itinerary.
