Dear Friends,
M essag e from
2 0 15 B oard Chair
P h i l SMit h
Sometimes when people think of United Way, they imagine an organization that
is headquartered in a far-away state, out of touch with our local issues and unable
to respond to the needs of southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. United Way
Blackhawk Region is an independent, local nonprofit organization led by a volunteer
Board of Directors who live here, give here and care deeply about our communities.
I am proud of the hard work we’ve done locally and the momentum we’ve gained. The
expertise and leadership of our Board of Directors, mission execution by six standing
committees, the time and talent shared by more than 900 volunteers, and the 42
Program Partners providing exceptional service to our region have all made 2015 a
year to celebrate. Responsible stewardship of donor dollars guides everything we
do and every investment decision we make. America’s leading independent charity
evaluator, Charity Navigator, works to advance a more efficient and responsive
philanthropic marketplace by evaluating the financial health, accountability, and
transparency of America’s largest charities and has awarded United Way Blackhawk
Region a 4 out of 4 star rating for the second year in a row. As Michael Thatcher,
President and CEO of Charity Navigator said, “This exceptional designation from
Charity Navigator differentiates United Way Blackhawk Region from its peers and
demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”
Accountability is a priority shared by our Program Partners and the transformation
to Community Impact gives those funded programs an opportunity to shine. The
Community Impact model helps us to invest in programs that matter the most to the
communities served - as defined and identified by those communities. We’ll have
much more information to share and ways for you to get involved in the coming
months.
I invite you to take a look through the following pages and share in the successes
you’ve made possible such as: uniting to provide over $60,000 of work across the
region during the annual Day of Caring and supporting 103 programs tasked with
creating lasting change in our community.
We greet 2016 with a heightened sense of enthusiasm for the important work we do
through your generous support. We greatly appreciate your willingness to champion
United Way Blackhawk Region. We achieve so much good together, thank you.

excellence in
advocacy award:
Sara h Williams
United Way Blackhawk Region has
established the Excellence in Advocacy
Award to recognize an individual
or program that strives to create
meaningful change and demonstrates
measurable progress toward
improving lives and strengthening the
community.
The recipient of the 2016 Excellence
In Advocacy Award is Sarah Williams.
Sarah began her Edgerton Community Outreach tenure in
2002, when they were in the throws of restructuring and
the services focused mostly on the Thrift Store and Food
Pantry. Over the last 14 years, Sarah’s dynamic leadership
has ignited Edgerton Community Outreach’s exponential
growth. Today, thousands of people are served with three
housing programs, a food pantry, a breakfast program,
a utility assistance program, seasonal offerings, and the
Thrift Store that currently generates more than $100,000
a year in revenue. Growth in revenue has led to growth in
services as well as the complete renovation of the 18,000
square foot building that is home to the agency.
In addition to service on many other local boards and
committees, in Sarah’s spare time, she lives her passion
by traveling on mission trips to Guatemala and Honduras
as part of a faith-based medical mission team.
Sarah’s friends and colleagues describe her as vibrant,
kind, hardworking and passionate about eliminating
poverty locally and globally. Under her steady hand,
Edgerton Community Outreach continues to provide
services that help those in need by breaking down barriers
that inhibit one’s ability to achieve self-sufficiency.
Please join United Way in recognizing Sarah Williams,
recipient of the 2016 Excellence In Advocacy Award.

As the long-time owner and operator of
Custom Copies and now the co-owner
of Jax Custom Printing, Inc., Rick is a
familiar face with a ready smile and a
laugh as generous as his spirit.
D ay of carin g recap
His volunteerism extends far and wide.
In recent years you can find him wearing
his Rotarian hat at meetings and the
annual Corn Roast, serving as the board

District, One Million Meals and as a
valued member of United Way’s Brand
Strategy and Marketing Committee.
Rick doesn’t hesitate to lend his talent,
raise his hand, share an insight or
deliver a deadline print package. One
customer remarked, “He’s always willing
to go the extra mile. One time, when we
were on deadline, he even delivered a
proof to me at my home in Beloit during
a snowstorm.”
For some folks, that would seem like an
extraordinary gesture but not to Rick.
For Rick Mueller, that’s the example he
sets. He raises the good guy bar for all
of us and his actions deliver a powerful
message of serving your community
and contributing what we each can
as individuals to making the world a
better place.
Please join us in congratulating Rick
Mueller, recipient of the 2016 United
Way Geraldine Hedberg Award.
United Way’s annual Day of Caring
provides an opportunity for local
nonprofits and volunteer employees of
area companies to LIVE UNITED. Sporting
tell-tale t-shirts and lots of community
spirit, more than 650 volunteers headed
out to 30 nonprofits in September to
lend a hand and learn more about
the important work being done in our
communities. From yardwork to cleaning,
and heavy-lifting to raising spirits, these
volunteers did it all.
The Day of Caring translates into
hundreds of hours of service that
equates to more than $60,000! For
many nonprofits, this single day
accomplishes important and impactful
tasks that they otherwise would not
be able to complete. At the Beloit
Salvation Army, volunteers put in a
large garden that will be fully utilized
this spring. Fresh produce will be
grown, tended and harvested by kids
in their character building programs
and made available to Salvation Army’s
feeding program and food pantry.
United Way extends its gratitude to
Day of Caring Coordinator Beth Gliebe
for enthusiastically and seamlessly
organizing the day’s work. Special
thanks to Mike Stormes for additional
technical support.

Baker Tilly sets the standard for the
term, “exceptional support.” While you
might think that four straight years of
100% employee participation in United
Way’s community campaign would be
enough for them to hang their hat on,
you’d find that’s only the beginning.
In 2015, Baker Tilly participated in
United Way’s Day of Caring by allowing
more than 1/3 of their workforce to
serve as volunteers at the Rock County
Historical Society, winterizing the
campus, raking, moving benches,
cleaning, winterizing gardens and
washing windows. Their staff hold
key positions at the committee level,
lending their expertise and support
to United Way as well as leadership
positions on our Board of Directors for
more than a decade.
United Way applauds Baker Tilly, the
2016 Live United award recipient.
