Platypus
also known as the duck-billed platypus is a
semiaquatic egg-laying mammal endemic to eastern
Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four
species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species
of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs
instead of giving birth.

This past summer, she starred alongside of Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler in “Blended,” proving that she can
hold her own with over 126 million dollars in box office sales (worldwide). Soon, she breaks her debut album and
headlines a remake of cult thriller, “The Amityville Horror.” This actress can transform. We haven’t witnessed such an
edgy powerhouse since Lindsay Lohan during her “Mean Girls” days.

Mobile

Emily Mistretta
The USS Alabama
Mobile Bay showed our 360 team a great time at Alabama’s
largest music event, the BayFest Music Festival, which marked
its 20th anniversary. This five-day trip also included experiencing
the magnificent French-inspired architecture, crab cakes
and oysters from BLUEGILL Restaurant, Wintzell’s Dragon Drink,
and 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center. An exclusive interview
with CEO of the Mobile Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau,
Al Hutchinson talking about his beginnings and what he plans
to work on in Mobile Bay can be found on our YouTube page
at youtube.com/360magazine.
The architecture throughout the MB was inspired by an early
French style, making it very reminiscent of New Orleans. While
on tour of the Mardi Gras Museum, we learned that the original
birthplace of what we celebrate today as “Fat Tuesday,” was
actually first hosted in Mobile Bay in 1703, not NOLA.
Trombone Shorty’s performance at BayFest was absolutely
incredible. His ability to switch back and forth between singing
and trombone playing demonstrated just how prolific his talent
is. He had the crowd going crazy all the while making it look so
effortless. It turns out, Trombone Shorty can not only sing and
play trombone, but moon-walking is also an activity put on so
naturally by him. Watching him glide across at the same time as
he put on a remarkable live performance was very impressive.
Chris “Ludacris” Bridges was electrifying with his quick-witted
punch lines and rapid-spitting verses. The veteran Atlanta MC’s
high energy set had him pinging from stage left to right. This
headliner came on as the last performance of the first night on
Miller Lite stage. On the second night, The Roots had the entire
audience head-bobbing to East Coast rap beats. Jimmy Fallon’s
house band did an amazing job, and Questlove was definitely in
full force on the drums.
Wintzell’s specialty Dragon Drink was
first created as a sign of Mobile’s
yearly Mardi Gras celebration. It is
a representation of Verna Dean, a
150-foot long dragon float, which has
been the main mystic in their Mardi
Gras parade for over 60 years now.
The oyster appetizer and crab cake
entrée from BLUEGILL was excellent, as
well as their unique combination of a
bacon vodka-based Bloody Mary.

One of our favorite parts of this trip was the second largest river delta in America: 5 Rivers Delta
Resource Center, which included a private tour on the Marsh. (The five rivers that flow into Mobile Bay:
the Mobile, Spanish, Tensaw, Apalachee and Blakeley.) With over 250,000 acres of waterways, woods,
and wetlands, it’s definitely worth exploring. For those of you who like a good adventure, there are
places here to hike, canoe, and kayak. And, good fishing is a must while on a floating two-story house,
which is usually in tow via duck boat.

The
Vampire
Diaries
The Vampire Diaries, based on the book series of the
same name written by L. J. Smith, first premiered on
The CW in 2009.
The story takes place in Mystic Falls, Virginia, a fictional
small town haunted and surrounded by supernatural
beings. The protagonist Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev)
is drawn into the supernatural world as she falls in
love with vampire Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley).
Eventually, however, Elena also finds herself drawn to
Stefan’s brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) –
resulting in a love triangle.
As the story progresses, it focuses on the mysterious
past of the town involving Elena’s malevolent
doppelgänger Katerina Petrova, who was the love
of both Damon and Stefan Salvatore many years
ago. Her return, along with the family of Original
Vampires, have all led to many plots against Elena
and Mystic Falls.

Miike Snow
Miike Snow is – are – in a playful mood. The
second album by the three-headed-band
with the one-man-name and mysterious
Jackalope symbol was called Happy To You.
“It’s a sign in the studio,” shrugs Christian
Karlsson. “An old-misspelled-phrase postcard
from Thailand. Nothing to do with any of the
songs…but it sort of stuck.”
The band, known for the out-of-the-box
success of the ubiquitous “Animal,” “Black &
Blue” and “Silvia,” have turned a new corner,
and turned myriad new tricks.
“Miike Snow is kind of like this playground,”
says Andrew Wyatt. “I don’t think Miike Snow
functions inside of a genre. Even our ‘dance’
songs aren’t really clubby.”
Pontus Winnberg comments, “We don’t
really wanna tell people what the titles are
about, or the lyrics, or what our thoughts
are about. We’d prefer them to put them
in their head and their lives, and make their
own interpretation. It’s nice to keep a little bit
of mystery.”
The writing and recording of their debut took
place in fits and starts. Wyatt would fly back
and forth between Stockholm and New
York for a few snatched weeks at a time.
“Nobody really had any expectations with
the first album,” admits Wyatt. “We knew
we wanted to make a record but we didn’t
know anything beyond that. We didn’t know
if we would find anyone who would want to
manage us as a band or put our record out.”
32
360 MAGAZINE
But, for the second album, buoyed by the
success of that accidental album, things were
different. (Wyatt relocated to Stockholm.)
Bunkered in their own studio – named Robot
Mountain, and housed in the stables of a
hundred-year-old former fire station – Miike
Snow were fired by the spirit of inventiveness.
The songs came thick and fast. They worked
together, and alone, and in rotation.
Says Winnberg: “For all three of us, it’s a
very vague difference between songwriting
to production to mixing to recording –
everything is just happening in a big blur.
So there was definitely action going on all
around the clock.”
“We know how to do a lot of different
things, so why do the things that you’ve
already done?” says Wyatt, explaining the
ceaseless sense of adventure on Happy To
You – organic meets electronic, whistling
meets raving, and no guitars allowed. “I think
sometimes you can gain from taking away
options. And it’s nice to try do some weird
things – juxtapose things that shouldn’t work
on paper.”

Prescilla, 27-year-old singer/songwriter/guitar player from Toronto, has
successfully infused rock, jazz, soul, and classical elements to create her

Caché
Jennifer
Ehrenfeld
of Caché
We caught up with SVP of
Design, Jennifer Ehrenfeld
during the recent New York
Fashion Week who shared
some insight on the goings
at the fashion brand and
retail destination, Caché.
What can we expect from the new Caché?
At Caché, the collection is continually evolving
to reflect a modern woman’s sensibility. Caché
clothing is trend-right and now offers a wider
product assortment to attract a broader range of
consumers. Our goal is to become a true lifestyle
destination…after all, every woman has a little
Caché in her.
Will the focus still be on evening wear?
We are a great fashion boutique for all the events
in a woman’s life. We have terrific sportswear
and day dresses that are great for the office or
an afternoon luncheon, date-night outfits, an
expanding offering of great accessories, seasonal
outerwear, and of course, some amazing cocktail
and evening dresses.
What has been the common perception of
Caché before?
That Caché appealed only to a consumer who
wanted sexy, form-fitting dresses, but our new fall
collection makes it apparent that Caché has a
much broader appeal.
Who is the Caché clientele?
Our Caché woman is confident, bold and in
charge of her life. She is comfortable in her own
skin, approachable, spirited, and likes to have
fun. While she is aware of fashion trends, she also
has her own point of view and style, and likes to
make a statement when she enters a room. She
takes care of herself and is aware of her sensuality
without being overtly sexy.
What kind of new clientele are you trying to
bring in?
Today, we are focusing our efforts to make the
younger millennial consumer aware of who the
brand is and who the brand can appeal to. This
new emphasis results in a product that looks great
and reflects a modern sensibility that appeals
to many women – items that are really hip and
exude a cool vibe.
Did you ever shop at Caché when you
were younger?
I’m a small town girl whose view from her bedroom
window was farmland and cornfields. I could only
dream about a shopping destination like Caché
back then. Growing up, my life revolved around
the local Dairy Queen and Casual Corner.
48
360 MAGAZINE
How does working at Caché differ from your other
roles in the design world?
Because Caché is a direct-to-consumer brand,
I get to react faster to what our customer wants
and needs. I also have the ability to curate
collections culled from the best design partners
and resources, each of whom is an expert in their
respective areas of sportswear, evening wear,
daytime fashion, accessories, etc. My responsibility
is to lead a very talented, young and energetic
design team.
Does Caché have plans for expansion?
We are so grateful to have enjoyed the support of
loyal customers nationwide for over 30 years. We
will continue to have a presence in malls across
the country, as we have become part of the
fabric of our consumer’s life – a responsibility we
take very seriously. We also enjoy support, both
online and in our stores, from a strong international
client base. As our society becomes more global
and the demand increases, we will grow our
business accordingly.
Where does Caché have the biggest “cachet”?
While we are in 41 states and have consumers
who enjoy the brand nationwide, we have a
huge customer base in Florida (where the brand
was founded). We also have a strong following
throughout the Northeast, Midwest and in other
states, too, including Kentucky, Missouri, Texas,
Georgia, California and the Carolinas.
What’s been fun about designing a new look for
the brand?
Being part of a team that is working to evolve
a brand is a huge responsibility, but we have
a mantra: “Work Hard, Work Smart and Have
Fun.” Seeing women wearing Caché and seeing
their positive response to the new collection is
gratifying. I love visiting the stores and seeing
customers shop – hearing their comments about
how they will incorporate their new items into
their wardrobe to reflect their sense of style. I also
enjoy feedback from our store executives, retail
personnel and our e-commerce team. I love
seeing their enthusiasm when a new shipment
arrives and learning that they can’t wait to share
the latest looks with their customers. It’s humbling
and exhilarating at the same time.

at Milk Studios in downtown New York City. The program
launched on October 7, 2014 with Chung’s “Shake Up Your

favorite looks and style essentials in Tommy Hilfiger stores and

“We are excited to partner with Alexa Chung as guest
editor of our Fall 2014 women’s collections,” said
Tommy Hilfiger. “Alexa is the true definition of an ‘it’ girl –
she’s cool, witty, smart and has a great sense of style. She

for a unique look that’s totally her own. Alexa will give our
customers an insider’s view of her must-have pieces from
our seasonal collections, all presented through shoppable

across Europe.”
Launched in October, Chung has revealed her must-have
fall essentials: a versatile cowl-neck sweater, a black A-line
flare skirt, and rock-and-roll-inspired black leather leggings
with moto details on the knee. She pairs the look with her
“dream coat” – an oversized wool-blend cocoon coat in
gray plaid. Her final picks for the month include button-down
blouses in tonal indigo and camouflage print, an everyday
low-rise skinny jean, and a navy blue wool-blend cardigan.
“I’m very excited to be working with Tommy Hilfiger – the
ultimate purveyor of preppy style,” said Alexa Chung. “To
be embraced by such a behemoth of an American fashion
brand is a huge honor.”
The launch of Chung’s guest editorship and its dedicated
imagery have been shared globally via Tommy Hilfiger’s

In addition, she has supported quite
a few of non-profit organizations,
including the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation, The Humane Society of
the United States, The Thirst Project
and The Dyslexia Foundation. “I visit
schools and talk to kids about being
bullied and Dyslexia,” she says of
her involvement with The Dyslexia

McLaren
650S
Shin Takei
No one word or even a few words can describe the 2015 McLaren 650S: To drive a 2015 McLaren 650S
is an out-of-this-world experience. Having the distinction of being the most successful Formula 1 team
in history, I waited in anticipation to drive the 2015 McLaren 650S. It is the successor to the still available
and excellent 12C, and is heavily influenced by their limited production P1.
Tech and Specs: 3.8 Liter Twin Turbo McLaren built M838T V8 engine developing 641 hp and 500lb-ft
of torque, 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox, Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires, Carbon Ceramic Brakes.
Weight 2,932 lbs. Performance 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds, top speed 207 mph. EPA fuel economy
estimates are16 mpg City, 22 mpg Highway, and18 mpg Combined.
Many components make the 2015 McLaren 650S the best all-around super sports car, but the Formula
1 technology-based carbon fiber MonoCell center tub weighing just 165 lbs offering incredible torsional
rigidity stands out. Added to this is the full wishbone suspension system, advanced engine mapping
and traction control, standard carbon-ceramic brakes and brake steer. Active Aerodynamics – which
channels the air to maximize the front down-force and a combo rear spoiler air brake – manages
down-force to the rear to add to the stability and enormous braking capabilities. There are three driving
modes: Normal, Sport, and Track. In Normal, the car is quite comfortable and manageable in traffic that
commuting to work is a breeze. In Sport, everything firms up, and the “cylinder cut” technology gives
an aural delight in a raspy exhaust note. In Track mode when under hard acceleration, “inertia push”
harnesses built-up kinetic energy to deliver an impulse torque as the next gear is engaged. Launch
control is there if you need it.
Open the dihedral doors – a pleasantly compact and simple cabin awaits you, swathed in Alcantara,
Nappa leather, carbon fiber and aluminum knobs and switches. Controls are simple and easy, and
the GPS, rear-view camera monitor is installed in portrait mode between the driver and passenger to
save space. Optional carbon fiber panels, aero wings and blades, engine accessories as well as the
comfortable race car-inspired seats can save weight but can cost quite a bit extra.
With the crisp shifting 7 speed gearbox, the smooth powerful engine, the sensitive precise direct feeling
of steering wheel, and the unbelievably rigid and stable chassis, the 2015 McLaren 650S Coupe and
Spider are winners. Because of this, we felt very comfortable going fast and confident that we were in
total control all the time. Believe it or not, we encountered rain during our spirited driving. Of course, we
were concerned about losing control but the McLaren 650S with the Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires held the line
without drama, a remarkable composure for a super sports car in the wet. It ended up becoming the
most safe, secure feeling cockpit I ever experienced – a thrill to drive. For those of us who crave a super
handling sports car, the 2015 McLaren 650S is the connected car we can drive today.

Aerosmith

Eiko Watanabe
Four-time Grammy winning band Aerosmith – Steven Tyler (vocals), Joe
Perry (lead guitar), Brad Whitford (guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass) and Joey
Kramer (drums) – are a living piece of American music history, having sold
over 150 million albums worldwide and been inducted into the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame. Proving that they can cross genre-boundaries with ease,
these rock legends have even taken home a Soul Train Award for “Best Rap
– Single” for the “Walk This Way” remix with Run–D.M.C. Their latest album –
Music From Another Dimension! – was released in late 2012. Last year, Tyler
and Perry, the band’s powerhouse duo, received the ASCAP Founders
Award and were inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame.
Earlier this year, they embarked on the Let Rock Rule Tour with Slash
featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. Although they had to
cancel a show in Concord, CA due to Kramer’s need for immediate
medical assistance, they successfully played all the remaining tour dates.
They kicked off the Prudential Center show with “Train Kept A-Rollin’” and
nailed all the 17 songs, including the fan favorites “Eat The Rich,” “Rag Doll”
and “No More No More.” At the end of “Livin’ on the Edge,” Tyler ran over
to Kramer on the drums, and forced him to sing the tune a little bit. (Who
knows why.) During the encore, Tyler performed snippets of “Mia” and
“Home Tonight” before going into “Dream On.”
The Bad Boys from Boston are now in their 60s but their show hasn’t aged
– energetic and entertaining. You’d get the same excitement as you had
when you saw them on 2012’s Global Warming Tour or the Just Push Play
Tour in 2001 (or any other ones, really). It is no wonder why they are one of
America’s most beloved bands of all time.

360 recently had the opportunity to explore the capital city of country music – Nashville, Tennessee. Our
press tour itinerary included Omni Hotel, Bluebird Cafe, Hattie B’s, City Winery, the Country Music Hall of
Fame and Museum, 12 South and the Gulch.
of City Winery. “The economy of the live music business is only expanding,” Dorf explains, and therefore,
he now puts his focus on “the sit-down singer/songwriter.” He has created a space for people not only
to come eat/drink wine, but also to enjoy live music during a “luxury concert experience.” Dorf currently
has four City Winery locations: Manhattan, Los Angeles, Nashville, and Chicago. He’s planning to open
up two more locations by 2015 for a total of six.
Omni Hotel, located in downtown on Fifth Avenue, had an extremely modern but nonetheless
hospitable feel to it. Its contemporary designs/styles are tied together with
music-inspired art, making every square foot of the hotel “hypnotic.” As for the
steak house and gift shop located inside of Omni, we call these a “must-see.”

history, where so many country musicians have been discovered (i.e. Kathy

two-time Grammy winner Don Schlitz (best known for writing Kenny Rogers’
“The Gambler”) performed. In addition, the Bluebird Cafe has been featured
on television in nearly every episode of ABC’s hit drama, Nashville.
The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum located downtown on 5th Avenue S, pays tribute to the
past and the present of country music. The actual Hall of Fame itself appreciates each of its members
as equals by randomly placing their plaques around the room. Our favorite part of this tour was the
Owen Bradley office as well as Miranda Lambert’s wardrobe exhibit. Elvis Presley’s gold Cadillac inside
the museum is iconic; he owned so many of them throughout his life, and it symbolizes not only who he
was as a musician, but also as the “King.” Taylor Swift’s Education Center includes a videoconference
lab and an interactive gallery, where country music provides a fun interactive experience for children of
all ages.
At the culmination of our “Greece of The South” trip, we spent time at the Harvest Night Music City Food
+ Wine Festival. Underneath twinkling stars, we indulged in the best of what their culinary community
had to offer. The most interesting of this night was not only a performance by Kings of Leon (Lady
Antebellum’s Charles Kelley and Hunter Hayes performed, too) but also the amount of servers with trays
in hand offering us premixed vodka & tonic while we adored the delightful mixture of crowd cheers
alongside the iconic tunes which permeated the air.
In short, Nashville is a destination worth investigating - home to world-renowned whiskeys like Jack
Daniel’s and sculptors like Alan LeQuire. There’s something for everyone in this town, even if you’re not a
music lover.
Hattie B’s, famous for its extremely spicy hot fried chicken - guaranteed to make
your eyes water and have fire shooting from your ears. They have two locations
in Nashville: one on Charlotte Pike, and the other on 19th Avenue S. They have
a large menu any meat lover would appreciate.
Michael Dorf, owner of City Winery, opened his first music venue, the Knitting
Factory in Manhattan, back in 1987. He says that he opened it “by default,”
during his time of managing a band as it became more challenging to book
gigs. It quickly became an important music venue attracting many performers
and a large crowd of spectators. Later on, in 1999, he opened another Knitting
Factory in Los Angeles. In 2003, Dorf was looking to “connect wine with a
higher-end luxury experience to music,” which is where he first got his idea

Estelle
How many people have dreamed of finding true romance, falling in love with ‘the one’? Truth be told,
the definition of true romance is less like a fairytale and more like a roller coaster, with ups and downs,
and a period of disorientation after it’s over. Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Estelle, however,
is one who is surely up for the ride.
On her fourth full-length album True Romance, Estelle lets go, completely – in the way that someone
has to when he or she enters into a relationship for the first time. “I had to be blindly optimistic in going
through that entire period,” Estelle says of her time coming out of a relationship. “It was devastating.
I didn’t know who the hell I was. I didn’t want to be that mean girl that felt all men were evil. I started
writing this record, and it was turning out to be so realistic.”
As she started to rediscover herself, Estelle began reflecting
on the ideas of passion, courage, bulls**t and true romance,
and how they play into the success, or the decline, or a
relationship. “This album is split into these four themes, and
every song fits into one of these themes.”

When Estelle first burst onto the scene in 2008 with the
#1 hit song “American Boy” featuring Kanye West, she
quickly became an R&B sweetheart. Her albums Shine
and All of Me came soon after, earning Estelle both
critical and pop success. Most recently, she
announced the launch of New London
Records, an independent label in
partnership with BMG, and is now
ready to give fans a full dose of
her deeper identity.
For Estelle, though, it took

“Conqueror,” she delivers an

In addition to her music, Estelle has also ventured
into the world of animation, voicing Garnet on
Cartoon Network’s hit show Steven Universe.
She also runs her foundation All of Me, designed
to build and develop the self-confidence, life
and leadership skills of youth across the country.
In the world of fashion, her Scarves by Swaray

Shin Takei (photography by Shin Takei)
One of Ralph Lauren’s exquisite car collections was a mid-1950’s Mercedes-Benz 300SL coupe,
more commonly known as the “Gullwing” from its doors when opened resembling the wings of
a bird. Ralph Lauren not only has the means but knowledge, good taste and passion for art and
beauty, and that is why his collection is so desirable. There are many like him all over the world
that owns similar cars whether it’s just one or a hundred in their collection. Some have loved cars
since they were kids or started later in life when they woke up to the beauty of automobiles as a
beautiful piece of art. This is a small guide to collecting classic cars.
82
360 MAGAZINE
I am often asked what car one should buy to start with. This is usually after some auction result
being written up in the Wall Street Journal or NY Times when a beat-up old car found in a
barn was restored and sold for millions. The answer is always the same: Do not buy a classic
car speculatively and anticipate making money on it. Rather, choose a car you really love,
the one you lusted over when you were young or couldn’t afford to buy in high school. The
reason is that you want to enjoy the car while you own it and take it out for a cruise or take it
to car shows, Concours d’Elegance or participate in a rally. Read everything you can and start
studying everything about the car and its current value. There are auctions, dealers, and many
publications in print and online that are dedicated to the car collector world. You can study
all about the hobby before you set foot in finding a classic car for yourself. Go to car shows or
Concours events, and meet people that own a similar car and ask them about their experience.
After you have determined what car you want to own and have done all the research, you must
decide whether you want one that needs a full restoration, a partial restoration or one that’s
already restored. Of course, there is a huge difference between a car like what Ralph Lauren
owns and a late 1960’s Ford Mustang or a Chevrolet Camaro, but the enjoyment is the same. The
cheapest route at first glance seems to be the one that needs a full restoration, but whether you
do it yourself or have someone else do it for you, it is a long process that requires perseverance,
patience, and lots and lots of funds. The just-restored classic today may sound expensive but it
will cost even more next year. A full restoration that cost $50,000 five years ago may cost over
$100,000 today. What you want to be careful about is that you’re making a purchase on a
genuine article and not some replica or fake car. A fake car is made up to look like the real thing
but is entirely fabricated from parts that are not original or remanufactured. That’s why the history
of that particular car is important. A case in point is a 1960’s Ferrari race car that crashed at Le
Mans and burned to the ground. The remains were thrown into the trash bin. Someone retrieved
some pieces from the wreckage and resurrected the car from parts. Another person also cut
out a piece of the chassis number from the wreckage and also built a car from ground up. Both
claim their cars were the original. This clouds the history, pedigree and value and lawsuits. If you
purchased a classic car that appreciates over the years, take it in stride, but if your classic doesn’t
increase in value, just enjoy it. It’s even nice to see it sitting in your garage.

Travi$ Scott
At only 22 years old, Travi$ Scott’s music has already taken him quite a few places. He’s lived on the
east and west coasts, as well as the “third coast” of his native Houston, Texas, but has seen exotic
locales while traveling with the most famous of his early fans, Kanye West. Since meeting in 2011, the
two have spent countless hours in the studio, the fruits of which can be heard on “Sin City,” Scott’s
standout contribution to 2012’s G.O.O.D. Music compilation album, Cruel Summer. In his verse, Scott
painted a vivid picture of a girl caught up in the allure of the fast life.
Travi$ Scott grew up in Houston, witnessing the showmanship of late 90’s rap videos from Mase and
Diddy and then later on, experiencing the revolutionary production of Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.
Scott began making beats when he
was around 17 and sought out the
tutelage of the local names he had
access to, who just so happened to be
dirty south hip-hop legends N.O. Joe
and Mike Dean. It wasn’t long after
that he would venture out to New York
to see what he was actually made of.
“I’m really into depicting what’s in my
life,” Scott says. “Anything I say in these
verses, that’s who I am. Those are real
stories.” Things didn’t quite take off the
way he imagined in New York (he had
to couch surf when money got low), so
he bounced to Los Angeles for another
fresh start. The leap of faith paid off with
Scott catching the ear of the “King of
the South” himself, T.I., who signed him
immediately through his Grand Hustle/
Epic Records imprint. With Scott working
with T.I., it wasn’t long before Kanye
West got wind of him.
In 2013, Travi$ Scott’s own Owl Pharaoh
mixtape set the world ablaze with tracks
like “Blocka La Flame” (the song he
co-produced with Young Chop) and
“Quintana” featuring Wale. “It’s like
becoming friends,” Scott, who recently
released Days Before Rodeo EP, says of
his music. “Once people get to hang
around you more and more, they’ll start
to understand you. They’ll either catch
on or they’ll get left behind.” And soon
enough, the world will know what so
many of our favorite rappers already
do: That Travi$ Scott is the future.

Trombone
Shorty
Troy ‘Trombone Shorty’ Andrews has God-given
talent, natural charisma and a relentless drive to
bridge music’s past and future. His 2013’s Say That
To Say This was co-produced by Andrews and
kindred spirit Raphael Saadiq, and sounded like
nothing else out there, as Andrews and his longtime
band, Orleans Avenue – guitarist Pete Murano,
bassist Mike Ballard and drummer Joey Peebles –
have continued their natural musical evolution. In
a very real sense, the torch was passed from one
great New Orleans band to another on the album,
which featured the first new studio recording from
the original members of the legendary Meters in
36 years, as they revisited their 1977 classic “Be My
Lady,” with Andrews singing lead and playing horns.
The album title, Andrews explains, is a common New
Orleans expression that essentially means “To make
a long story short,” serving as a wonderfully on-point
description of the album and of Trombone Shorty’s
music in general.
Andrews’ previous projects include 2010’s Grammynominated Backatown and For True (2011), which
spent 12 weeks atop Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz
Chart. Since For True’s release, Andrews has
106

recorded with an eclectic assortment of artists
ranging from Zac Brown to Eric Clapton to Rod
Stewart and CeeLo Green, while taking the time to
initiate a mentoring program at Tulane University
via his Trombone Shorty Foundation. He was also
featured in a recurring role on the hit HBO series
Treme. The band was also chosen to play the closing
set at the 2013 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival,
a huge honor in the world of true music lovers.
But for Andrews, the biggest thrill of all was
performing at The White House in February 2012.
“That was a dream come true about 50 times over,”
he says. “When we started playing, I forgot I was at
the White House because I was on stage with all this
musical royalty – B.B. King, Mick Jagger, Booker T.
Jones, Jeff Beck, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks,
Gary Clark Jr., the list goes on. And then, when I
turned to the audience, there’s the President and
the First Lady. I’m like, ‘This can’t be happening.’”
Good things continue to happen for Trombone
Shorty, thanks to his virtuosity, his dedication, and his
ability to move people. That he pursues his passion
with such humility and unpretentiousness makes his
still-unfolding story as compelling as the music he’s
making along the way.

Having wrapped up three sell-out North American tours
supporting Lorde, Phantogram and Delorean, Until The
Ribbon Breaks, the three-piece band fronted by Cardiff
native Pete Lawrie Winfield, recall how as youngsters you
would “give a girl or a friend mixtapes to let them know what
music you loved. It didn’t matter if one song was De La Soul
and the next was R.E.M., it was about the feeling the entire
collection conveyed.”
Drawing both their approach and name from their art form,
Until The Ribbon Breaks (UTRB) are a uniquely skilled, singing,
songwriting, producing collective. Decidedly honest, their
music embraces an old-school passion for intricate, clever
writing, and the slicing together of sounds, samples and
lyrics: a skill demonstrated in their debut track “Pressure” and
the accompanied self-made video which they released on
YouTube in 2013.
The powerful debut EP A Taste Of Silver, which followed,
treated listeners’ ears to something compelling and unique.
Mesmeric, dark apocalyptic pop, meets infectious avantR&B in a way that is both haunting and beautiful in its raw
confrontation of human emotion.
This year, as well as working on their debut album, UTRB have
caused frenzy amongst the blogosphere with remixes, or
“re-imaginations,” for The Weeknd’s “Wicked Games,”
Sam Smith’s “Nirvana,” Lorde’s “Royals,” Phantogram’s

After the album release, UTRB will join London Grammar on

Gunned Down in Mexico, and Freedom. He has toured with country music legends such as Tim McGraw
and Kenny Chesney, and he regularly tours the United States, The Caribbean, & Europe with his band,
The Revival.
As a painter, he began Rock and Roll Paintings by Ray Stephenson in 2009, and in 2012, he became the
official painter for the Monsters of Rock Tour. Influenced by the paintings of Odd Nerdrum, Gustav Klimt,
Rembrandt and Andrew Wyeth, his paintings explore his love of color, texture, music and nature. He has
exhibited his work in Nashville, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Atlanta.
“Music and painting for me are both sides of the same coin,” Stephenson explains. “They both are
lyrical, both involve singing, both tell stories, and reach inside and speak to others from what is coming
from inside of me.”
