IRECTOR’S FOREWORD
“台上三分钟,台下十年功
(3 minutes of glory on stage,
10 years hard work off the
stage).”
This Chinese proverb is exceptionally
true for Dancepointe Academy (DPA) as
we celebrate our 10th year Anniversary.
DPA started its journey with a vision
that quality dance education should
be affordable and available to all
children with any physical attributes.
For the past decade, our team has
worked hard and remain true to our
vision to provide a comprehensive
curriculum that includes not just
accredited examinations but also one
that provide performance opportunities
for all our students. This year, we have
put together a series of 3 concerts
at Kallang Theatre for our team and
students to once again shine on stage
with their artistic and fresh views from
past choreographies.

With a team of strong and committed full

have won both local and international
recognition. There are namely Dancepointe™ (The School of Classical

HE STORY
On a seemingly normal day, the dancers
gather before as usual before heading
up to the studio for ballet class. On
this very day, however, they decided to
relook at videos of past performances
which all of them had danced in,
before class starts. By a stroke of
sheer coincidence, it turns out that all
the dancers gathered together, had all
been lead dancers in the performances
at one point or another in the past 10
years of Dancepointe’s existence!
There were the lead characters from
Realm (2006), Magical Wonders
(2008), Nutcracker (2011), Repertoire
(2012), Alice in Wonderland (2013),
and The Enchanted Tale (2014).
45
As the dancers take the lift to head up to
class innocently, whilst still reminiscing
about the past, unknown to them, the
reminiscing had magically unlocked a
time turning ability of the lift, to bring
the dancers back to the major events
of their dance lives with Dancepointe
Academy.
“Turning Hands of Time” will take us
down a walk at memory lane with the
dancers, as they show us a glimpse of
their journey with Dancepointe the past
10 years…

I started my ballet training at a tender
age of four under Ms Lena Foo. At
Dancepointe, I had achieved straight
Distinctions for myRoyal Academy Of
Dance (RAD) Graded to Advanced 2.
While studying at School Of The Arts
Singapore, I received a scholarship to
pursue my passion for dance at Central School Of Ballet (CSB) in London.
Dancepointe had also extended a bursary for my studies. I am happy to have
recently graduated with a First Class
Honours Degree in Professional Dance
and Performance. This year, I return as
alumni to perform and revive the roles
as Clara in ‘Nutcracker’ (2012) and
Princess Ariel in ‘The Repertoire’ (2013)
for Dancepointe’s 10th Anniversary
Concert, and I look back on how Dancepointe has grown together with me
tremendously through these years.
I have been with Dancepointe since
the birth of its first branch at Taman Jurong CC. Walking the journey with Dancepointe to where it is today has been a
magical journey so far, with all of us just
like a family with the passion to dance.
10 years in Dancepointe is nothing short
of amazing. I have completed my RAD
Ballet training under Ms Lena Foo and
have also explored many other genres
such as Jazz and Contemporary.
Throughout these years, the greatest
takeaway is the lifelong friendships that
I have forged with my ballet mates. Not
only have I grown as a dancer through
examinations, productions and competitions; I was given many teaching opportunities as well. I would love to share
my experiences and passion and I hope
to ignite the love for dance in the younger generation some day.
I am thankful to Dancepointe for believing in me and my ability, hence supporting me in chasing my dreams to be a
dance instructor and choreographer.

true gift of dance.” ~ Aubrey Lynch

Dance has been part of my life for years.
I started ballet at the age of 5, and was
under Ms Lena Foo’s guidance for the
past 12 years. In Dancepointe, opportunities have been given to expose
myself to various types of dance, such
as jazz and contemporary. In addition,
I was given chances to compete in Singapore, Perth, Barcelona and exchange
programme to London. Yearning to
learn more and excel in life, Miss Foo offered me an assistant teaching position
in the school. Assisting in dance classes sparked my interest in dance education. Dancepointe has inspired my love
for teaching.
Since joining Dancepointe in 2014, the
school has given me the opportunities
to continue my passion for dance. I
have nothing but fond memories and
experiences to gain while challenging
myself in this wonderful artform together with my teachers and friends. Having the chance to be a part in the last
concert, The Enchanted Tale 2015, was
something that I will not forget. Not only
have I made valuable friendships during
the process, I had great fun revisiting
my childhood memories.
Dancepointe gave me the opportunity to work with different teachers and
to explore a completely new variety of
dance styles since I joined in 2014. I am
grateful for having the opportunities to
compete in the Asia-Pacific CSTD competition 2014, RAD Challange 2015 and
perform in the annual concert. Though
training sessions are never easy, it
pushed us to persevere and to endeavour beyond our limits. The teachers
here at Dancepointe are always willing
to help us improve and push us to maximise our potential.
Dance has been a great part of my life
since the age of 3 and I’m glad I decided to pursue dance as a career for me.
Besides, attaining my RAD teaching
certificate under Ms Lena Foo, I have
achieved various awards in International
and Singapore dance competitions.

Looking back now, I have been a student of Dancepointe since the beginning days. Throughout the years as a
student and dancer here, there was
never a lack of opportunities for me
to grab hold of to express myself, especially through the different genres
of dance which are offered to all. Not
to mention, the various platforms like
year-end concerts and overseas dance
immersion programs available for me to
be a part of to gain exposure and better
myself physically and mentally. Furthermore, this year marks Dancepointe’s
10th year anniversary and I am grateful
to be a part of this joyous event as I take
a trip down memory lane with my fellow
dance mates and my teacher, Ms Lena
Foo.
I am 12 this year and started dancing
at Dancepointe at the age of 3. Dancepointe is my second home and I’m
constantly inspired by many seniors
and teachers. I hope, I will be as amazing as them. I am really glad that i had
the opportunity to play as one of the
lead performer for this year, ‘Turning
Hands Of Time’ concert. As a Dancepointe student,i have learnt how to responsibly carry out myself and act as a
person and i have learnt the importance
of friendship and team bonding. Lastly,i
want to thank the teachers,especially
Ms Lena Foo, who guided me through
my incredible journey in Dancepointe.
I have been dancing under the tutelage
of Ms Lena Foo in Dancepointe since
i was 5 years old. During my years in
Dancepointe, I had participated in two
of Dancepointe’s major concerts such
as Magical Wonders, where I play as
the role of Puss in Boots, as well as The
Nutcracker where I was Claire’s younger
brother, Fritz.
This year, I am proud to be part of Dancepointe’s 10th Anniversary, “Turning
Hands of Time”, where I will be embarking on a magical journey to find true love
as Puss in Boots.

choreographer, Mr Dan Kwoh, for the
past 4 years. I was selected to be in
the pioneer batch of dTEAM, the performance team of dACADEMY (Contemporary faculty of Dancepointe

I started my first experience with Dancepointe in 2013. Being an outstanding

opportunity and support I am finally accepted as an Artist in Singapore Dance

YNOPSIS OF ACT 1
The Realm of Dance 2006
Life is like a picturesque journey that begins with a Dream. The Little Girl whom we see today - her life, her aspirations and her long road to success. For her, her life revolves around
dance, but she has never thought she will get her chance to learn Ballet, because her family
has only considered dancing as a mere form of leisure for rich families, and not possibly a
precious part of their life. She sees the amount of school homework that she has and knows
the all-too-common mantra that success in school means success in the corporate world.
She dreams of the little ballet shoes and dancing in them. She quietly watches the TV of
various dance genres. Hey wait a min! The Little Girl is bemused to realize that even her
Mum, is captivated by the exhilaration of dance.
Finally, the Little Girl’s passion to the art of dance convinces her Mum to allow her to pursue
her dreams. For the first time, she is entering The Realm of Dance.
The Magical Wonders 2008
Once upon a time, there lived an unmarried prince at Magical Wonderland. He was not like
any other princes who wear shining armors but was ugly, fat and green! He was none other
than Shrek the ogre! Shrek was never loved, and he decided to find and fight for his true
love with the help of Puss in Boots and Puss in Heels! They travelled to different lands In
Magical Wonderland such as Adventureland, Fantasyland and Winterland to widely search
of princesses worthy of Shrek’s love. So who will be the true love for Shrek and live “Happily
Ever After” with him in the Main Castle of Magical Wonders?
The Nutcracker 2011
An all-time favorite for Christmas – The Nutcracker. Clara is delighted with her Christmas
present, made by a toy maker, Uncle Drosselmeyer. She dances with the Nutcracker toy.
As the house quiets down, Clara settles on the sofa and falls asleep with the doll in her toy
arms.
As Clara dreams, she sees her house begins to change around her. The Nutcracker is in a
battle with the Mice and he wins with the help of Clara. The mice retreat and the nutcracker
is transformed into a handsome Prince.
Clara and the Prince travel to the beautiful Land of Sweets, ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy.
In honor of the young heroine, a celebration of sweets from around the world is produced:
Danish shepherdesses perform on their flutes; Mother Ginger has her children, the Polichinelles, emerge from under her enormous hoop skirt to dance; a string of beautiful flowers
perform a Waltz.

YNOPSIS OF ACT 2
The Repertoire 2012
It was the year that we had 2 different themes. Tonight we restage The Little Mermaid with
a twist on her adventure with the world inhabited by human beings. The Little Mermaid,
longing for the prince and an eternal soul, eventually visits the Sea Witch in a dangerous
section of the ocean. The witch willingly helps her by selling her a potion that gives her legs
in exchange for her tongue (as the Little Mermaid has the most enchanting and beautiful
voice in the world). Consuming the potion will make her feel as if a sword is being passed
through her body, yet when she recovers, she will have two human legs and will be able
to dance like no human has ever danced before. With the pair of legs, she and her sisters
made their journey to The Land of Africa and were also amazed by the dazzling Broadway
dancers in the New York City thereafter!
Alice in Wonderland – Taste the Twist 2013
All characters from The Redson Family fell into a Wonderland! Alice, after drinking the bottle
of milk, her adventure started with The Wonders of Small Flowers and The Arabian Princesses. During the journey, she encounters a Red Queen whose jewel went missing. The Red
King quickly accused the Knave of Hearts for stealing and the Red Queen turned red with
fury. Gathering her troop of soldiers, her aim was to capture the Knave of Hearts.
When the truth was out, there was merry at the Tea Party where the Madhatter and Dormouse invited Alice to sing and dance with them.
The Enchanted Tale 2014
Inspired by the movie of The Enchanted, this is the first Musical Sing and Dance by Dancepointe Seniors whom had captured the hearts of the audiences. In the land of Enchanted, there lived a princess by the name of Snow. Evil starts brewing when the White Queen,
Snow’s Stepmother realized she was not going to remain Queen for much longer, and
decided to banish her to the other world.
Her good friends, Cinderella, Mulan and Pocahontas all fell through the magical portal to
save Snow.
The princesses found themselves in the real world, Times Square in New York City. While
finding their way back to The Enchanted Land, they bypassed the Central Park and explored their way to a dance studio where they witnessed the rehearsal of a classical ballet
show - The Black Swans.

IRECTOR’S FOREWORD
Dancepointe Academy has come a
long way in the last 10 years. As Director
of Dance Factory, our Hip-Hop & K-Pop
subsidiary, it brings me great joy to
have seen the school transform from
a simple ballet school into the vibrant
and holistic multi-genre dance school
that it is today! We at Dance Factory
are proud to have been a member of
Dancepointe Academy, and join in as
they celebrate their 10th year!
And what a year it has been! We
wrapped up the fourth and final round
of our ‘K-pop Dance League’ – the first
of its kind in Singapore! Our quarterly
event ‘Dance Family Outing (DFO)’ was
taken to bigger and better heights with
students of all levels getting to perform
in venues such as J Stage, Big Box and
the Bishan Community Club. Some
of our students were also given the
exciting opportunity to perform for the
Takizawa Kabuki 10th Year Anniversary
Show, which was staged at Marina Bay
Sands’ The Grand Theatre.
Our crews in particular have done us
proud, representing us at National
events such as the ‘NTUC Celebrates
SG50!’, corporate shows and many
more. Of special mention is our teenage
crew (Gen.Z) who emerged champion
for the K-Pop (Juniors) category of
Pulse 2015!

into even better dancers. Our ‘Crew
Programme’ is one such platform.
On 13th Dec, a concert by the
performance teams of DPA we hope to
give you a taste of what each crew has
to offer – each with their own personality
and flavour! They range from the
energetic DF Nanos (7-9 year olds), to
the quirky DF Minis (10-12 years), and
the ever-cool Gen. Z (13-16 years). Our
adult crews are the sexy DF Babes, the
dynamic DFS, and the powerful DFJ. DF
Mega is a mixture of crew members from
the various adult crews while the DF All
Stars consists of our instructors. Our
instructors and dancers have worked
hard to make tonight’s event possible,
and have definitely emerged as a bigger
and closer dance family.
The 8 crews you see for 13th December
show are just some of the budding
talents from our school. As we continue
to grow we hope to give more students
the opportunity to be a part of this crew
experience.
I would like to take this opportunity to
thank all performers, choreographers,
Dancepointe & Kallang Theatre staff,
backstage crews and volunteers for
all their hard work in making tonight
possible. A special mention goes to our
DF Concert Executive Committee who
worked tirelessly for the last few months
Over the years Dance Factory has to help make this event a reality. And
transformed into a Performing School to the audience, especially family and
for Hip Hop & K-Pop Kids, Teens friends of our performers, thank you for
and Adults, with more and more your continued support in our events.
opportunities and platforms for our
students to learn, perform and grow I wish everyone here today a pleasant
evening and hope that all of you will
have a fun time tonight :)

IRECTOR’S FOREWORD
Mr. Dan Kwoh
Artistic Director of dACADEMY, SIngapore
It has been rewarding and meaningful career as Dance Educator. Coincidentally,
this is also my 10th year in Dance Choreography and Education. Ever since
2001, with the support of Georgette Chen Arts Scholarship by the National Arts
Council for my professional training at the LASALLE, I have been most fortunate
to be given many opportunities to work with talented individuals and to assist
them to excel in international competitions and performance. It is immensely
encouraging when we see our students winning awards in Bolzano International
Dance Competition 2013, Grand Prix Italy 2012 and Dance Grand Prix in Barcelona
Dance Award 2011 & 2015.
I have always lived by the motto of “Dance as an Education”; and that is the
very reason why I decided to part of the Dancepointe Academy (DPA) family. It
has always been my belief that dance is not just about movement and creativity
but also character and personality development. Such education is especially
important for the young ones, and I’m glad that DPA takes the responsibility of
educating them to be a better individual. With DPA‘s passion in education and
willingness to give every student the space to explore Artistry in Dance, I took up
the challenge to start the new faculty of contemporary dance, dACADEMY. As the
Artistic Director of dACADEMY, my aim is not only impart core dance techniques
in contemporary works, but also to provide proper training and opportunities to
explore dance at a higher, semi-professional level. This is necessary as there are
many good dancers and almost no platform in Singapore for them to pursue their
passion.
Besides dTEAM, the performance team of dACADEMY; I will also be leading the
Apprentice Programme in 2016, with the aim of grooming young aspiring dance
artists. With Dancepointe Academy’s encouragement and willingness to provide
various platforms for these aspiring dancers, I believe, we will be able to catapult
our dancers to greater heights.
Tonight’s concert, it is the first production specially provided for our Performance
and Competition Teams of DPA, namely Junior & Senior Apprentice, dTEAM and
the 8 Dance Factory crews (DF Nanos, DF Minis, DF Genz, DFS, DFJ, DF Babes,
DF Mega, All Stars).
We will be able to see some of our recent award winning choreographies that
depicts life through artistic expression and exploration of dimensions with
creative use of material and props. All of these brought to you by our students in
celebration of DPA’s 10th anniversary and Singapore SG50. Hope you will have
an enjoyable journey!

T
HE PERFORMANCES TEAMS OF DPA
APPRENTICE PROGRAMME 2016
Dancepointe Academy Apprentice Program is an accelerated learning dance course designed to
provide talented dancers an additional platform to learn progressively and expand their artistry in
dance. Students will be given opportunities to be trained on performance-oriented techniques in
Classical Ballet, Modern and Jazz by the most respected teachers and professional choreographers
in our community. These students will also be given the chance to gain experience and exposure
from the Overseas Immersions and Competitions on the global stage as they represent Singapore
for International Dance Competitions such as Europe Dance Prix and CSTD Asia Pacific. Indeed,
these are invaluable for our students for résumé-building experience and discovering opportunities
within the performing arts.
As this is heavily subsidised programme, we are looking for dancers that are
•
•
•
•
Proficient in ballet/pointe/modern.
Mature, self-motivated and goal-oriented.
Commitment for all rehearsals and performances
In good physical condition by the start of the season as our schedule is very intense
The TEAMS dpa 2016 will be participating in an exciting Immersion Programme at Shenyang and
Beijing during June holidays and competitions in Sept.
By overwhelming response and strong request, we have decided to extend the dateline for the
application of The Apprentice Team Audition, coming up on the 2nd Jan 2016, at The UCC dance
studio. You may visit our website for the online application and the dateline will be extended to 16
Dec 2015.
We look forward to having you on our programme!
DANCE FACTORY CREW 2016
WHY THE TEAM WAS SET UP
The DF Crew platform was set up for multiple reasons – We hope to give our more passionate
students the opportunity to develop and hone their dance abilities, in an environment that is more
conducive for personalized and intensive training. Our aim is to groom our dancers to reach a level
where they can be professional dancers or instructors in the future.
Our belief is that dancers should embody both the right aptitude and attitude; therefore the crew
platform also teaches our students about the importance of values such as respect, hard work,
team work and integrity which are vital not just for a dance career, but also in life.
We hope that as these crew members grow as dancers, they would inspire other aspiring students
to reach their highest potential, and would feel proud to represent the DF Family.
AIM FOR NEXT YEAR
Our aim is to reach a higher level of performance quality and provide even more opportunities for
our dancers on bigger and international platforms.
